      • A Study on the appropriate herbal medicine according to Sasang constitution using EAV

Choi,Jin-Wook,Lee,Su-kyung,Hong,Suck-chull,Koh,Byung-hee INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 1997 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.2 No.1

        1. Objective This is a basic study about the response of herbal medicine to EAV. The purpose was to investigate how the meridian of EAV responded to herbal medicine and how EAV was applied to the diagnosis of Sasang constitution. 2. Materials & Methods The subjects of this study were patients who were being treated in the Dept. of Constitutional Medicine ot Kyung-Hee Medical Center. The study examined how herbal medicine affected the maximum value and the indicator drop and how each constitution responded differently to the constitutional herb medicine. 3. Results & Conclusions 1) When comparing the maximum value and ID of the worst BAP before and after the experiment with herbal medicine, the maximum value significantly went up and the ID significantly went down in all the herbal medicines. So we confirmed that all the herbal medicines positively affected the change of the maximum value and ID. 2) The changes in the maximum value induced by herbal medicines were significantly different according to the constitution of Dokhual Jihwang Tang, and Hyangbuja Palmul Tang. Although Dokhual Jihwang Tang was soyangin's herb medicine in Sasang constitutional medicine, it raised the value of soeumin higher than that of soyangin. Hyangbuja Palmul Tang which was soeumin's herb medicine raised the value of soeumin higher than that of the other constitution. 3) The changes of ID were not significantly different in the constitution.

      • Saam-Ohang Acupuncture Treatment Methods of Impotence in Male Sex Clinic

Ahn,Se-young INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 1996 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.1 No.1

To explain impotence, Oriental Medicine uses the terms Yinwu(양위), Yangwu(양위), Yingibulyong(陰器不用) and Yangsabulguh(陽事不擧), not presenting the definition or the standard but explaining briefly theh condition of impotence with the ideogram, chinese character, emphasizing reasoning treatment and prescribing based on pattern identification. And Oriental Medicine understands the impotence not as a disease but as a kind of sign acompanied with the functional impairment of the organs. The etiology(pathological mechanism) of impotence could be devided into two parts; the first is a deficiency syndrome of the kidney noted in Neijing(內經) as functional impairment of organ and deficiency syndromes of the heart, spleen and liver are also considered as the reason of impotence.: The second is the functional impairment of the Liver meridian resulting from Wetness and Heat in the channel which surrounds the genitalia among 12 meridians. Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Herbal Medications are applied in the treatment of impotence in Oriental Medicine. In particular, Saam-Ohang acupuncture treatment which is the most frequently used in Male Sex Clinic has significant effect on improving sexuality, increasing the frequency of morning erection and improving the erecting rigidity and duration. In this paper I just summarized the theoretical basement of Saam-Ohang acupuncture treatment, the adaptable symptoms and the acupucture points. But the effects are only theh subjective expressions of the patients. So further active appliance of western medical apparatus such as Phlethysmography is required to prove these effects objectively.

      • Basic Conceots and Treatment Methods of Obesity in Oriental Medicine

Shin,Hyun-dae INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 1996 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.1 No.1

Nowadays, obesity and overweight constitutes serious health problems in a modern complex industrial society. They are either directly, or indirectly, associated with a wide variety of diseases that account for an ever-increasing annual mortality rate. In Oriental Medicine, doctors treat problems of obesity in another way in comparison with Western Medicine. They consider the metabolic disorders of five organs, Wind(風), Plhegm(痰), Damp(濕), and Heat(熱) also give rise to obesity and overweight problems. And also, the treatment of obesity in Oriental Medicine is very various and complex. Present forms of treatment include acupuncture, herb-medications and Qigong. In particular, starvation is carried out with manipulation, negative therapy, a contrast of bathing therapy, carbon therapy, behavior modification and counselling. As stated above, the concepts and treatment methods of obesity in Oriental Medicine are unique and original. In that, Chinese Medicine differs from the point of Western Medicine, it is regarded as the cause of obesity and the lack of energy in the paunch liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys. Disorders in the paunch and metabolism are caused by moisture, spectrum, palsy and fever, whose explanations are the same as disorders of the digestive system, metabolic functions and the endocrine system. To treat obesity, in Chinese medicine, many treatments like Chinese drugs, acupuncture and Qikong-therapy cures are being used. Manipulation, negative pressure, physical and breathing-exercise cures are used with the fasting cure stepped into reduction, fasting, convalescence and dieting. Also, this institute analyzes dietary habits with on obesity-evaluating questionnaire, grasps the causes and constitution of obesity, performs the action-correction cures to induce changes of a wrong dietary and living habits and solves psychological disorders that are observed in obese patients through counselling. Such like concept on the medicine has a peculiar concept on the basic causes and classification of obesity, and uses many safe treatments without any sideeffects.

      • Effectiveness of Electroacupuncture on Spasticity in Stroke Patients

Kim,Yong-suk,Kang,Sung-keel INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 1997 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.2 No.1

Spasticity is a common problem in stroke patients. And its management is becoming a major issue in rehabilitation. We studied the effectiveness of electroacupuncture in the treatment of spasticity in stroke patients who were hospitalized at the Hospital of Oriental Medicine. Kyung Hee University Medical Center. Twenty stroke patients with spastic hemiplegia were observe to evaluate the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture on spasticity in the upper limb. The acupuncture points were applied to Kokchi(LI 11). Susamni(LI 10), Hapkok(LI 4) and Oegwan(TE 5) of the affected limb. The electrodes were placed unilaterally on LI 11 to LI 10 and TE 5 to LI 4. Electroacupuncture with biphasic wave. 50 Hz. 0.4 msec pulse duration and low intensity below the threshold for a visible muscle contraction was applied continuously for 20 minutes, 5 times per week until the 4th week or until discharge. Spasticity was assessed in the elbow flexor muscle by the modified Ashworth scale. Spasticity was relieved with statistical significance<p<0.001) immediately after every session of electroacupuncture as a short-term effect in the first week. While there was not any statistically significant relief lasting over 24 hours. Even though the therapeutic effect did not last over 24 hours, spasticity was gradually relieved from consecutive treatments during the four week period. The results indicate that electroacupuncture can relieve spasticity clinically in stroke patients.

      • The Clinical Study on the Change in Decreased Visual Acuity by Treatment

Chae,Byung-yoon,Choi,Eun-sung INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 1996 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.1 No.1

Herbal medication and acupuncture treatment have been used for ametropic patients in Oriental Medicine. But, the objective clinical study on remedial value has still not been enough. For objective research, we have treated patients, who decreased visual acuity by refractive condition(for example, myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia), or by amblyopia without organic lesions or other diseases, with herbal medication and acupuncture treatment, and have checked the change of visual acuity every month and took statistics on the changes of visual acuity. The clinical study was performed on 79 patients, who visited the Department of Oph. & Otorhinolaryngology of Oriental Medicine of Kyung Hee University Medical Center, from July 1995 to June 1996. These results couldl be summarized as follows; 1. On the first visit, the visual acuity both eyes was mainly below 0.2, and the average of visual acuity in O.S.(0.24) was worse than in O.D.(0.29). 2. In the difference of visual acuity between O.D. and O.S., the difference after treatment was higher than the first visit. 3. In the changes of visual acuity of O.D. after 1 month's treatment, among the total patients, improved patients were 63.16%, after 2 months' treatment, 64.29%, and after 3 months' treatment, 73.68% each. In O.D. the average of visual acuity after each treatment period was higher than on the first visit, but there was no statistically significant difference between the visual acuity on the first visit and that after each treatment period. In the case of improved visual acuity of O.D. after 1 month's treatment, the average of visual acuity chart's level was +1.88, after 2 months' treatment, +2.19, and after 3 months' treatment, +2.29. 4. In the changes of visual acuity of O.S. after 1 month's treatment, among the total patients, improved patients were 67.11%, after 2 months' treatment, 73.18% and after 3 months' treatment, 73.68% each. In O.S. the average of visual acuity after each treatment period was higher than on the first visit, and there was a statistically significant difference(P<0.01) between the visual acuity on the first visit and that after 1 month's treatment, and after 2 months' treatment, respectively. But, there was no statistically significant difference between the visual acuity on the first visit and that after 3 months' treatment. In the cases of improved visual acuity of O.S. after 1 month's treatment, the average of visual acuity chart's level was +1.92, after 2 months' treatment, +2.29 and after 3 months' treatment, +2.36. 5. In the difference of treatment effective between males and famales, there was no statistically significant difference.

      • Clinical Study on 133 Cases of Temperance(Quit-drinking) Therapy

        Woo, Hong-jung,Lee, Jang-hoon,Kim, young-chil INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 1998 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.3 No.1

Background : Korea is lacated in a region in which liver disease with hepatitis viruses is prevailing, and the death rate due to hepatoma is highest in the world. Along with the recent unstable economic conditions in Korea, the total amount of alcohol consumption volume was reported to increase, which causes social, economical and health problems. These two factors, hepatitis virus and alcohol, can worsen liver diseases such as hepatitis, fatty liver, and liver cirrhosis, etc. On the other hand, habitual intake of alcohol gives bad influences on family and society, and may cause various losses such as breakdown of family life, decrease in labor productivity, accidents, and crime, as well as the loss of his/her own health. This study was performed in order to study the effect of quit-drinking therapy. Method : This study was performed on 133 patients(male:122, female:9) who visited the Hospital of Oriental Medicine. Kyung Hee Medical Center for about 3 months from March 16, 1998 to June 13, 1998. Questionnaire and liver function test was done at first visit. Auricular acupuncture treatment was done twice a week for 5 days. Patients were encouraged to stimulate the ear acupuncture point by pushing the tape down from time to time. Along with the acupuncture therapy, herb medicine was prescirbed according to the clinical manifestations and laboratory findings of patients. Result : More than 70% of the patients with abnormal findings in biochemistry showed improvement, and more than 67.2% of all the patients showed improvement in their symptomas caused by alcohol and could stop drinking more than I month(52.7%) or the consumption volume was decreased more than 70%(14.5).

      • The Characteristics of the Viscera and Bowels of Sasang Constitutional Medicine

        Song, Il-byung,Lee, su-kyung,Koh, Byung-hee,Kim, Jong-won INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 1998 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.3 No.1

This paper was written in order to introduce the Visera and Bowels of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Sasang Constitutional Medicine was based on Confucianism. It perceived everything in quaternary aspects gave great importance to the harmony of human and human society. It had a structure of four viscera : lungs, spleen, liver, kidneys, and the heart, which was the supreme ruler of other viscera. The function and size of the viscera excluding the heart were determined by the difference of nature and emotion such as sorrow, anger, joy, and pleasure. So there were four types of human being based on the congenital formation of organs that depended on the nature, emotion and inclination of the mind. Taeyangin(太陽人) has large lungs and a small liver, Taeumin(太陰人) has a large liver and small lungs, Soyangin(小陽人) has a large spleen and small kidneys, and Soeumin(小陰人) has large kidney and a small spleen. The characteristics of viscera and bowels are quartenary, and the define four-cho(四焦), four-viscera, four-bowels; that is, the four-system explains the physiology and pathology of the viscera and bowels by ascent and descent of up-down, fasten and unfasten of interior-exterior of Yin-Yang. The function of viscera can be classified into two parts; the lungs and liver affected the metabolism of Qi-Yack(氣液) and the spleen and kidneys affected teh metabolism of food which produces the fundamental materials and function of vitality.

      • Digital infrared thermal imaging in osteoporosis

Lee, Kyung-Sub,Kim, Yong-Suk INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 2000 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.5 No.1

This study examined the relationship between bone mineral density and DITI in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. An analysis was performed on the thermographic findings of 20 patients without osteoporosis, 20 with osteopenia and 20 with osteoporosis at the Kangnan Korean Hospital, Kyung-Hee University, Seoul, Koera, from June 1998 to February 1999. The osteoporosis was measured by LUNAR PIXI and the body temperature was assessed by DITI. Thermogrphic measurements were performed on 4 areas(acupuncture point: CV12, CV4, BL23 and BL26). All data were coded for computer analysis and significances were tested by Duncan test. There was no significant diference in age among the three groups of patients. DITI revealed the significant hypothermia (p<0.001) on the osteoporosis patients compared with osteopenia and normal bone density patients. It is believed tha DITI may be a favorable alternative to diagnosis of osteoporosis.

      • A review of Ageing and Aged adult disease

Rhee, Hyung-Koo INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 2000 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.5 No.1

The aged population has a view of continuous increase. So resently the social concern of a geriatric disease is tending high. Taking a side view of life quality and the definition of health, a man can find happiness in the social life when his body and his minds are healthy at the same time. For that the disease should be prevented by proper examination. It is showed that the blocking for stress is one ways of prevention for aging by affirmative thinking and proper exercise. And it needs to observe the rescent result of research but when we think aging is a physiological phenomenon drawing near naturally it is important not to be preserved but to be aged healthfully. Therefore the aim of oriental medicine for ageing and aged disease is establishing the exact theory about anti-ageing and aged disease at the base of the traditional method for preservation of health and the method for preservation of health(養生法) and precautionary medicine.

      • The Effect of Rice Roast Against the Immunity Precipitation in the Radiation

        Gu, Yeun-Hwa,Suzuki, Ikukatsu,Park, Sang-Rae,Hasegawa, Takeo,Tatehana, Tieko INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE KYUNG-HEE UNIVERSIT 2001 JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE Vol.6 No.1

Recently, it was cleared that the injury that it oxidized by super oxygen, free radical in the various diseases and aging was deeply concerned. Moreover, it pays attention to the prevention by the anti-oxide, and research on the anti-oxide quality is composed of is formed in the living body, and it oxidizes in lipids, protein, nuclear acid radiation irradiation damage. Therefore, it knows that various organization difficulties are pulled up. Actually, there is a report of controlling the lipids of over-oxidization when an X-rays and a gamma ray were irradiated, and DNA damage by the treatment of the vitamin E. It considers that RICE ROAST plays a part as radical scavenger that super oxygen that occurred in the body is erased, too, from the result of this research as well. And, there is MEA (cysteamine hydrochloride) as one of the radiation protection medicine. Watanabes report that the DNA one chain cutting caused by a gamma ray, and chromosome aberration were decreased remarkably after the radiation irradiation as a result of examining the effect of the vitamin E by using the embryonic cells of the ham star against the cell damage. This effect is thought to be effect on prevention of OH radical. Therefore, radical scavenger prevention action due to the radiation chemical action and effect on anti-oxidization were explained in this research in the same way as the number of leucocyte. It faced the number of the occurrences of lymphocyte, effect on radiation protection by the RICE ROAST medication that a radiation irradiates it was explained. The result of the blood cell level study were explained Therefore, it thinks about damage by the radiation by radical of super oxygen with the thing due to the repression action of the vitamin E due to the oxide target damage of nuclear acid, the lipids, the protein in the living body. The radical scavenger prevention action due to the radiation che.
