The clinical validity of mucin expression in gastric cancer is debated. Whereas several reports demonstrate a correlation between mucin expression and prognosis, others deny such an association.

CONTEXT: Tissue microarray (TMA) is an array-based technology allowing the examination of hundreds of tissue samples on a single slide. To handle, exchange, and disseminate TMA data, we need standard representations of the methods used, of the data generated, and of the clinical and histopathologic information related to TMA data analysis. OBJECTIVE: To create a comprehensive data model with flexibility that supports diverse experimental designs and with expressivity and extensibility that enables an adequate and comprehensive description of new clinical and histopathologic data elements. DESIGN: We designed a tissue microarray object model (TMA-OM). Both the array information and the experimental procedure models are created by referring to the microarray gene expression object model, minimum information specification for in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry experiments, and the TMA data exchange specifications. The clinical and histopathologic information model is created by using College of American Pathologists cancer protocols and National Cancer Institute common data elements. Microarray Gene Expression Data Ontology, the Unified Medical Language System, and the terms extracted from College of American Pathologists cancer protocols and NCI common data elements are used to create a controlled vocabulary for unambiguous annotation. RESULT: The TMA-OM consists of 111 classes in 17 packages to represent clinical and histopathologic information as well as experimental data for any type of cancer. We implemented a Web-based application for TMA-OM, supporting data export in XML format conforming to the TMA data exchange specifications or the document type definition derived from TMA-OM. CONCLUSIONS: The TMA-OM provides a comprehensive data model for storage, analysis, and exchange of TMA data and facilitates model-level integration of other biological models.

Multilocular thymic cyst associated with mature mediastinal teratoma: a report of 2 cases.
Rakheja, Dinesh,Weinberg, Arthur G American Medical Association 2004 ARCHIVES OF PATHOLOGY AND LABORATORY MEDICINE Vol.128 No.2

Acquired thymic cysts are multilocular and show florid xanthomatous and myofibroblastic inflammation. They usually occur in association with mediastinal neoplasms, systemic autoimmune diseases, or trauma. We describe 2 cases (in a 12-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy) of acquired thymic cysts occurring in association with cystic teratomas, an association that to our knowledge has not been described previously in the literature.

Primary myxoid leiomyoma of the liver.
Yoon, G S,Kang, G H,Kim, O J American Medical Association 1998 ARCHIVES OF PATHOLOGY AND LABORATORY MEDICINE Vol.122 No.12

We describe a case of hepatic leiomyoma in a 41-year-old woman who complained of abdominal discomfort due to a right upper quadrant abdominal mass. A computed tomographic scan revealed a large hepatic mass with unusual cystic change. Light and electron microscopic findings and an immunohistochemical study demonstrated diffuse and scattered proliferation of smooth muscle cells in a myxoid matrix. In contrast to previously reported cases of primary leiomyoma of the liver, the present tumor developed in a patient without an immunosuppressive condition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of primary 'myxoid' leiomyoma of the liver.

CONTEXT: The ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene encodes a nuclear 370-kd phosphoprotein known to be associated with chromosomal regions containing double-strand breaks. The mutations in the ATM gene may be involved in the development of some subtypes of sporadic lymphomas and leukemias. In primary central nervous system diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (PCNS DLBCLs), the pathogenetic role of ATM mutation has not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate ATM protein expression in PCNS DLBCLs, in comparison with that in non-central nervous system (non-CNS) DLBCLs and to study the relationship of ATM protein loss with several clinicopathologic parameters. DESIGN: This study included 42 cases of PCNS DLBCL and 33 cases of non-CNS DLBCL from immunocompetent patients. The ATM protein loss was analyzed by immunohistochemical staining. For the subclassification of DLBCL and analysis of the relationship between ATM and other prognostic markers, we performed immunohistochemical evaluation to detect the following markers: Bcl-6, CD10, multiple myeloma-1, CD138, Bcl-2, Ki-67, and p53. RESULTS: The loss of ATM expression was statistically more frequent in PCNS DLBCLs (21/42 cases [50.0%]) than in non-CNS DLBCLs (0/33 cases [0.0%]; P < .001). The loss of ATM expression was not a prognostic marker in PCNS DLBCLs (P = .64). The loss of ATM expression had a strong correlation with the germinal center B-cell-like subtype (P = .01), a low Ki-67 labeling index (P = .03), and low Bcl-2 expression (P = .01) among several clinicopathologic parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the ATM protein is more strongly correlated with PCNS DLBCL lymphomagenesis than with non-CNS DLBCLs, especially in germinal center B-cell-like subtypes demonstrating low Ki-67 labeling indexes and low Bcl-2 expression.

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Among patients with depression following recent acute coronary syndrome, 24-week treatment with escitalopram compared with placebo resulted in a lower risk of major adverse cardiac events after a median of 8.1 years. Further research is needed to assess the generalizability of these findings.
