Children’s picture books, a book form that emerged in mid‑17th‑century Europe, have garnered widespread international acclaim for their innovative visual elements and sophisticated narrative structures. As picture books have disseminated and developed within China, they have progressively become an important medium for children to engage with indigenous cultural heritage. Chinese monster (yāoguài) culture, with its deep roots and unique ethnocultural attributes, constitutes a significant component of traditional Chinese culture. However, amid the tide of globalization, Western mythological systems—such as Greek and Norse mythologies—as well as foreign supernatural traditions, including Japan’s yūrei and Korea’s shamanistic lore, have continuously entered China, forming both fusion and competitive dynamics with native culture. Western icons—such as unicorns, vampires, fairies, wizards, and magical princesses—frequently appear in children’s picture books, subtly influencing Chinese children’s cultural perceptions. In contrast, Chinese traditional monster–themed picture books—from the fantastic beasts of the Classic of Mountains and Seas to the demons of Journey to the West—embody rich cultural narratives and philosophical depth. Within today’s Chinese children’s picture-book market, there remains ample scope for creative exploration of traditional monster themes. This dissertation addresses the following four principal aspects. Firstly, it delves into the intrinsic relationship between Chinese monster culture and children’s picture books. Based on the origins and historical evolution of traditional monster culture, this study analyzes how such culture is concretely represented in picture books for young readers. Chinese monster imagery spans from ancient mythological creatures to classical literary demons, each carrying profound moral didacticism and cautionary functions. Over time, these monsters have retained their narrative potency while acquiring more vivid, child-appropriate traits. By examining artistic means—such as color usage, form design, facial expression, and narrative structure—this research investigates strategies for “childifying” monster imagery and discusses its pedagogical value in cultivating courage, wisdom, and ethical sensibilities among children. Secondly, it presents a systematic review of monster imagery in the original Journey to the West. This chapter organizes a taxonomy of the novel’s various monsters and traces their cultural origins. Through an in-depth analysis of their character attributes, visual representations, and symbolic meanings, it illuminates the key role these images play in plot progression and moral instruction. Furthermore, by deeply dissecting the narrative functions of these monsters, the study offers rich inspiration for modern picture-book creation, exploring methods to maintain tradition while achieving innovation. Recommendations are proposed for reconfiguring monster imagery to align with children’s cognitive levels and emotional experiences, thereby facilitating the effective transmission of traditional culture. Thirdly, it focuses on the multidimensional utilization of Journey to the West monster imagery in children’s picture books. This section examines the developmental trajectory from traditional serialized editions of Journey to the West to contemporary picture-book adaptations within China, analyzing artistic treatments of monster imagery—form design, color schemes, and compositional layout. It also investigates the influence of Western art styles and the aesthetic characteristics of Europe, America, Japan, and Korea, discussing strategies for cultural localization and adaptation. Through comparative studies of domestic and international picture-book works, this research evaluates international reception and the effectiveness of cultural export, highlighting differences in artistic style, technique application, and narrative approach. Lastly, it explores the innovative reconstruction of traditional cultural elements in modern children’s picture-book creation. Emphasizing design innovation in monster imagery, this chapter examines how traditional Chinese art forms—such as ink wash painting, Peking opera, embroidery, and blue-and-white porcelain—can be integrated with contemporary visual innovations to satisfy children’s aesthetic preferences while stimulating imagination and creativity. Strategies are proposed for balancing cultural inheritance with artistic innovation and for designing monster figures suited to the global children’s readership. By systematically investigating how Journey to the West monster imagery is applied and reimagined in children’s picture books, this research elucidates the cultural-transmission value and educational functions of traditional Chinese monster culture. Comparative analysis of Chinese and foreign picture-book works reveals design differences across cultural contexts and their impact on children’s psychological development. In pursuing both the essence of Chinese tradition and breakthroughs in modern picture-book artistry, this dissertation offers methods for organically combining indigenous cultural elements with international expressive techniques—thereby effectively propagating Chinese heritage and fostering cultural awareness and pride among young readers.

The life and growth background of Alexander McQueen were examined, and the world of his works was contemplated in order to examine the characteristics of the Alexander McQueen Collection. The concept and background of the manifestation of grotesqueness were examined through preceding studies, and the analysis of the grotesqueness illustrated in fashion was contemplated with its four characteristics. These characteristics were categorized as bizarre horror, The external characteristics of bizarre horror in the Alexander McQueen Collection can be seen as the use of fear-inducing objets and details such as demons and death, the rendering of a frightening ambience, and the fear of the unknown and creatures that do not exist in the reality. The inner meaning was deduced from the fear imprinted on human instincts, the aggressive and destructive instincts within, and the accusation of the inhumane modern society. The characteristics deduced from the abnormal playfulness were examined through the imaginative expressions of the human body that seems to be out of reality, the use of ridiculous objets that do not belong together as though it were a child's play, the destruction of established cognition of harmonious proportions, and the expression of unknown creatures that could only exist in one’s imagination. Its inner meaning was examined as an escape from reality, a criticism and satire of modern society through laughter, and an expression of an inner desire to transcend the limitation of human beings. Next, the external characteristics of body mutilation and distortion were the exposure of invisible body parts such as bones and muscles, and the use of objets that appear to be the mutilated body. The internal meanings in them were the destruction of stereotypes, the loss of the value of human existence, the inducing of human identity, and the destruction of traditional beauty to pursue newness. Lastly, the external characteristics illustrated in the extreme abhorrence were the use of objets that induce disgust, use of details, explicit sexual expressions, direct expression of the body, and violence inflicted on the body. Expression of dissatisfaction with the society, and conveyance of the sensation of freedom through the expression of anxiety, anger and pain were examined as its internal meaning. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of the grotesqueness expressed in the Alexander McQueen Collection and to present the direction for design characteristics by developing a design based on them.
Novels and films are two art forms rooted in life. While they share commonalities, there are also many differences between them. With the advancement of internet technology and other innovations, people increasingly seek information that combines both visual and auditory effects. Literary creation has begun to draw from film techniques, placing greater emphasis on visual and auditory storytelling, scene dynamics, and a cinematic sense. Novels provide a wealth of story resources for films, contributing to many outstanding cinematic works. In today’s trend of transmedia storytelling, Yan Geling’s works, with their unique value and profound portrayal of female characters, have become a focus of academic research. This study focuses on the transformation of female images and the representation of cultural connotations in the film adaptations of Yan Geling’s novels within a transmedia storytelling context. As a prominent author in contemporary Chinese literature, Yan Geling’s works present a unique female perspective through meticulous character portrayals and rich historical settings. Through transmedia storytelling, her works have been adapted into films, enriching the portrayal of female characters and allowing for reinterpretation within new cultural contexts. This thesis systematically analyzes the presentation, positioning, and cultural symbolism of female images in Yan Geling’s representative novels and their film adaptations, using perspectives from narratology, film aesthetics, and cultural semiotics. Starting from the theoretical foundations, this research outlines the framework of transmedia storytelling and female character representation, clarifying the narrative transformations involved in adapting literature to film and the innovative impact of transmedia storytelling on the portrayal of female characters. Based on this framework, the thesis examines the multilayered qualities of female characters in Yan’s novels and explores how, in their film adaptations, these characters are extended and enriched through narrative restructuring, pacing control, visual storytelling, and symbolic imagery. Additionally, this study investigates the role of social and historical backgrounds in shaping character traits and how transmedia storytelling reconstructs these contexts during adaptation, thereby endowing female images with new cultural connotations in the film adaptations. In the film aesthetics section, the thesis explores the role of cinematic elements such as camera language, sound and music, and scene design in enhancing the expressiveness of female characters. It analyzes how these elements deepen the emotional resonance and symbolic meaning of female characters, enabling them to convey cultural significance through visual symbols and spatial imagery. These design choices allow female characters to possess a stronger emotional appeal, enhancing audience engagement and cultural impact. Finally, this study examines the cultural symbolism of female characters in Yan Geling’s film adaptations, investigating how these adaptations contribute to the social recognition and acceptance of female images, as well as cross-cultural interpretations and reception within different cultural contexts. The findings suggest that transmedia storytelling not only innovatively diversifies the representation of female characters but also enables Yan’s female figures to be reinterpreted and accepted within a global cultural context. By analyzing Yan Geling’s transmedia adaptations, this research further expands the application of transmedia storytelling theory in the study of female character representation, offering new perspectives and theoretical support for the depiction of female images and cultural implications in film adaptations. It demonstrates how film adaptations, through media transformation, strengthen the cultural value and social significance of female characters.

A scenario aiming at the production of a film reaches a complete work, going through revision or adaptation by the intention of planning. Since the scenario of a film cannot be revised after screening at the theater, the composition of characters and stories in the planning stage before entering the production of the film is the basic and the most important job. Creative feature film scenario Linda is a scenario planned for the production of a film. It expanded from a short film previously planned through the process of revising the scenario several times already. It began as a story about same-sex affection, but it would tell the story, aiming at realistic suggestions by melting the theme that men live, repeating the same mistakes by greed for hope in the story for the offsetting of repulsion again sexual minorities’ story, which is a somewhat unfamiliar subject, and for the theme and composition in a popular direction. Feature film scenario Linda is mainly set on Namsan Sowolgil. Currently, on Namsan Sowolgil, there is transgender people’s prostitution, and especially, to express the lives of the transgender people who earn a living by prostitution with men with a peculiar bent, this study referred to the materials of the incidents that had taken place on Sowolgil, and the scripting work was done, utilizing the contents of interviews with transgender people who were active in Itaewon, Seoul. Feature Film Scenario Linda created and applied realistic events and fictitious events. Realistic events increase the sense of the reality of a scenario, and fictitious events provide elements of amusement according to the flow of stories. The scenario Linda utilized a true incident in which teenage motorcycle gangs were arrested, who assaulted and took the money and things from the transgender people who touted prostitution on Sowolgil in April 2012 and tried to maintain the tension, creating and applying four fictitious events. Through an analysis of the plot of the scenario Linda, this study would understand problems with the storyline composition. The most important part to reconsider the scenario is to check if the flow of stories properly progresses. Checking and analyzing the plot composition would be essential courses that cannot be missed in creating a scenario. This study would analyze the plot consisting of five steps from the storyline of the creative scenario Linda and check if realistic events and fictitious events have harmoniously applied so that they can maintain tension, utilizing the theory of 3 chapters, check if characters’ space was properly arranged and check if the application of time and space of the scenario plot composition has been appropriate through an analysis of the temporal background of the past, present and future and space of day and night. This study would reconsider the feature film scenario Linda and present a direction of production. This study aims to understand and supplement problems of the scenario before the production of the feature film scenario Linda. To develop it into a complete scenario before the production of the film, this study would draw prerequisites and present the characters and images of space to make efforts to supplement the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex) characters and location space on a more realistic side.

Sometimes, we feel bored with monotonous daily life. Living in contemporary society, it is often realistically challenging to constantly pursue new and exciting endeavors. Furthermore, if the same things keep happening in daily life, I used to feel unbearable boredom rather than feeling stable. To overcome this, I chose to 'look back on ordinary experiences'. This means looking back on things that I didn't care about and thinking of them again because of getting used to routines. In other words, I mean to experience slow life in an intended way and to experience the same things in a new way. All the experiences that I have lived became a starting point for self-exploration and a foundation for building my identity. For example, I have known what I like and what I dislike while experiencing many things in my life. I realized that I established my identity by understanding my personal taste. Thus, this study deals with three topics : music, scent and travel. They symbolize joy of finding my own taste and imply personal sentiment at the same time. I aimed to transform memories, which often linger as vivid yet sometimes blurred and suspended images, into a glassmaking works. To achieve this, I used the Pâte de Verre technique, known for its abstract and hazy qualities, aligning with my unique imagery of indistinct and ethereal impressions. Through various formative experiments, the organic images resembling both movement and stillness emerged as the glass powder and granules melted in the kiln. These visuals also closely resembled my internal representation of memories, leading to the definition of this phenomenon as "arrested flow." While "arrest" and "flow" may appear contradictory, the interplay mirrors the nature of memories derived from experiences: as moments transition into the past, they continue to extend indefinitely throughout my life. In other words, the "arrested flow" expressed in this study symbolizes the overlapping and ever-expanding process of countless memories. This study aimed at exploring possibilities of glass art by contemplating meanings of daily life images embodied in artworks through an analysis of artworks created between 2023 and 2024. Despite being based on personal memories and experiences, I hope the artworks serve as a medium for sharing experiences with viewers. In conclusion, the important purpose of this study is to solidify my artistic vision through the analysis and organization of my works.

This thesis aims to deeply examine the narrative representation of mother-daughter relationships in three representative Taiwanese family films Lonely Taste( , 2020),The Falls( , 2021), — 孤味 瀑布 andAmerican Girl( , 2021) and their socio-cultural 美國女孩 — implications. To this end, this study utilizes a combination of text analysis, feminist film theory, semiotics, and narratological approaches to explore how mother-daughter relationships are reconstructed and re-signified within the broader context of changes in Taiwan's family structure, the awakening of gender consciousness, and social transitions in contemporary Taiwanese society. The introduction of the thesis reviews the process of Taiwan's modernization and the resulting changes in family functions and structures, as well as the evolution of gender roles. It particularly discusses how the "role of motherhood" embodies a dual tension between tradition and modernity at the intersection of family ethics and social norms. The main body of the thesis then proceeds with individual case analyses of the three films.Lonely Tasteconstructs a narrative of family memory and intergenerational healing through funeral rites and object symbols, revealing the conflicting tension between maternal responsibility and personal emotions. The Fallsportrays the collapse and reconstruction of the mother-daughter symbiotic relationship from a psychosocial perspective through the dual narrative of a confined space and mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile,American Girlpresents the healing potential of the mother-daughter relationship through narrative strategies of physical touch, emotional expression, and language recovery, centered on the identity confusion and emotional disconnection of a return migrant mother-daughter pair in the context of the SARS period. Furthermore, this study compares and analyzes the patterns of mother-daughter relationships, the reconstruction of maternal images, and emotional narrative strategies across the three films, identifying similarities and differences in terms of genre characteristics, narrative structure, visual techniques, and symbolic systems. Through this, the thesis aims to elucidate how these works reflect Taiwan's family values, emotional structures, and gender consciousness, and how mother-daughter relationships function as both a "vessel of emotion" and a medium for socio-cultural transfer, embodying power dynamics and emotional tensions within the family. This thesis contributes to expanding theoretical interest in micro-level emotional structures, such as mother-daughter relationships, in the field of Chinese-language family film studies. By combining cultural, semiotic, and emotional analysis, it aims to build an academic framework that bridges three key themes: family ethics, gender power, and identity formation. Additionally, it provides a pathway for future analysis in Asian women’s film studies.

In cultural narratives centered on comfort women films, marginalization, neglect, and suppression frequently occur, resulting in features of absence and concealment. After the Anti-Japanese War, survivors of the comfort women system were cast into tragic fates, unable to reintegrate into society, becoming marginalized figures in their own realities. Comfort women films are characterized by trauma narratives. The postwar trauma they depict is not only visible on the physical level but also permeates deeply into the psychological layers of survivors. Physical trauma threatens life and destroys the body, while psychological trauma entails the collapse of values, the rupture of identity, and leads to mental disorders and anxiety. These complex factors interweave to create multilayered expressions of trauma narratives in comfort women cinema, making the study of these films a significant academic task. This study focuses on the Korean film <I Can Speak> and the Chinese film <Jeongjeong>. Both works are rich in analytical value across various dimensions such as genre, narrative structure, character portrayal, plot development, and thematic expression. First, the generational context of these stories reflects the lived realities of comfort women survivors in the postmemory generation. Second, both films share a thematic emphasis on women’s destinies. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the two films from the perspective of care ethics. Care ethics centers on relationships between individuals and between individuals and society. This research adopts care ethics and film narratology as its theoretical foundation to offer a novel interpretive framework. It analyzes the demands of care ethics and the strategies of cinematic expression, and explores ethical reflection and judgment within cinematic narratives. To begin, a conceptual clarification of the study subject is necessary. The “comfort women films” in this study refer specifically to narrative fiction films, not documentaries. While both forms address comfort women issues, fiction films reconstruct the past through dramatized narrative and visual language, whereas documentaries seek to recreate historical truth through records of real people and events. Therefore, this research focuses solely on fictional representations of comfort women, excluding documentary films from its scope. Although many documentaries on the subject exist in both Korea and China, fictional films are relatively scarce. In this regard, this study offers theoretical and practical contributions to the future production of comfort women cinema. Second, the scope of the research is also clearly defined. A comfort women film is not merely one that mentions comfort women, but one that places their experiences at the center of the narrative. A film centered on a specific topic should maintain that topic as the core element of its theme, characters, and plot. Thus, a comfort women film must have a comfort woman as a central character, and her story must drive the main narrative. If the presence of comfort women is marginal or subordinate to other storylines, the film cannot be categorized as a comfort women film. Third, this study sets its temporal scope within the context of the postmemory generation. Films from this period use wartime as background, but their central focus is the lives of survivors after the war and the psychological scars they bear. The “postwar” period varies slightly in definition between Korea and China referring to the time after — liberation from Japanese occupation in Korea, and the time following victory in the Anti-Japanese War in China. Comfort women films of the postmemory generation differ narratively from earlier wartime films. Past films often depicted war brutality directly, emphasizing visual shock and condemning Japanese militarism, with an intent to portray the suffering of comfort women. However, such portrayals may inadvertently cause secondary victimization and psychological discomfort, especially for female audiences. From a care ethics perspective, this approach is problematic. Women should not be portrayed as mere objects of the gaze but must be acknowledged as narrative subjects, with attention paid to their inner emotional worlds. Films of the postmemory generation adopt indirect storytelling and gentle strategies of care. They focus on the survival stories of individual comfort women and shed light on their postwar hardships. These films further analyze their psychological transformations and reflect deeply on themes such as humanity, justice, memory, and forgetting incorporating — elements of cinematic therapy (cinematherapy). Moreover, these films reflect the mindset and behaviors of their own time. Comfort women films evolve in line with social discourse: narrative perspectives shift, themes develop, storytelling methods diversify, characters are reimagined, and audio-visual language continues to advance. This dissertation comprises six chapters, structured according to a logic that progresses from surface phenomena to internal essence. Chapter 1 (Introduction) defines key concepts, clarifies terminology, reviews previous research, and explains the selection of <I Can Speak> and <Jeongjeong>. The methodology includes literature review, case analysis, and comparative research. Chapter 2 (Theoretical Framework) outlines the core ideas of major theorists and constructs an analytical model by combining care ethics with film narratology, laying the foundation for later analysis. Chapter 3 (Character Construction) discusses character-building strategies, focusing on external factors such as feudal ethics, class power, and survival conditions. It explores the transformation of female images from victims to saviors, witnesses, and recorders. Chapter 4 (Narrative Strategies) analyzes textual narrative elements such as themes, perspectives, structures, and genre blending, comparing narrative features and differences between Korean and Chinese comfort women films. Chapter 5 (Visual and Auditory Narratives) investigates cinematic techniques through mise-en-scène, cinematography, color, lighting, and sound design. It studies how these elements shape characters, advance the plot, and express themes. Chapter 6 (Conclusion) summarizes the research, highlights its significance and limitations, and proposes future directions and practical implications for comfort women film studies and production.
Architectural mise-en-scène functions as a critical visual component in films, embedding cultural implications and serving as an essential semiotic system to convey narrative meanings and emotional resonance. Particularly within the genre of science fiction cinema, architectural mise-en-scène is not merely a foundational visual element that constructs cinematic worlds but also serves multifaceted roles in narrative progression, audience emotional engagement, and cultural metaphorical expression. Despite this significance, systematic semiotic investigations into how architectural mise-en-scène influences narrative functions and meaning-making in film have remained limited. Addressing this academic gap, the current study selects Denis Villeneuve's science fiction films, the series and <Blade Runner 2049>, as primary analytical objects. These films exemplify distinctively grandiose architectural mise-en-scène and visual styles, effectively serving as exemplary cases to explore how architectural mise-en-scène operates semiotically within cinematic storytelling. Grounded in Umberto Eco’s semiotic theory, this research systematically investigates the interplay among semantic structures, spatial coding, and narrative functions of architectural mise-en-scène in the selected films. Utilizing key concepts from Eco such as code theory, open text, and semiotic production, the study establishes a multi-layered analytical framework. Methodologically, the research primarily employs semiotic textual analysis to deeply interpret how spatial arrangement and architectural configurations within the films generate narrative meanings, supplemented by literature review and comparative analysis to enhance comprehensiveness and analytical depth. The findings demonstrate that Villeneuve actively utilizes architectural mise-en-scène as a central narrative signifier rather than a mere backdrop element. In Blade Runner 2049, the vertical and horizontal spatial configurations visually manifest structural social inequalities and fragmented memories, effectively constructing a dystopian worldview and identity disorientation. Conversely, the Dune series employs majestic spaces and symbolic architectural forms to embody complex power dynamics, ecological crises, and religious implications, thereby enriching the cultural symbolism conveyed. Each film distinctly employs architectural mise-en-scène strategies to visualize narrative intentions and thematic meanings. The academic novelty of this study lies in its focused semiotic exploration of architectural mise-en-scène within cinematic narrative analysis, thereby expanding the interdisciplinary research space between film semiotics and spatial aesthetics. Additionally, this work addresses the existing scholarly gap regarding semiotic analyses of Villeneuve's films and deepens theoretical understanding of the relationship between cinematic narratives and architectural mise-en-scène. Consequently, the study contributes new theoretical perspectives and methodologies to film aesthetics and semiotic research.

In today's fashion industry, sustainability has become a critical issue. Zero-Waste Cutting is an innovative design method aimed at minimizing waste generated during the production process by optimizing fabric usage. Zero-Waste Pattern Design improves traditional cutting methods through creative fabric division and arrangement, reducing fabric waste, increasing fabric utilization, practicing zero-waste fashion, and promoting the development of sustainable fashion. Reflecting this background, this study developed pattern designs based on the Zero-Waste Cutting concept. Additionally, dressing simulations were conducted using 3D CLO. This study traces the history of zero-waste clothing, researches and summarizes the designers and works of ancient and modern zero-waste designs, and summarizes zero-waste cutting methods. The conclusions of the study are as follows: First, the method of applying 3D virtual software, including 3D CLO, V-Stitcher, and Style3D, to clothing design was discussed. These software tools can simulate the physical properties and drape effects of fabrics, allowing for multiple adjustments and optimizations in a virtual environment, thus reducing trial and error in actual production. Second, pattern designs were developed by applying geometric cutting, puzzle cutting, module cutting, and minimal cutting methods among the zero-waste pattern cutting methods. Third, to improve fabric utilization and enhance design flexibility and accuracy, experiments were conducted to simulate the physical properties of fabrics using 3D CLO software, and dressing simulations were conducted to maximize fabric utilization. The zero-waste pattern design using 3D virtual programs in this study is considered to have significant advantages in practical applications and help develop the fashion industry in a more sustainable direction. Furthermore, this study is significant as it provides foundational data for applying zero-waste cutting methods using 3D virtual programs.
