Objective : This study was to report a clinical trial in which acupuncture treatmnt on 會陰 (Huiyin, CV1) was effectively applied to a patient who had suffered from teasing pruritus ani for 38 years. pruritus ani was thought to be initiated by dystonia. Methods : The acupoint, 會陰(Huiyin, CV1) was selected, because needling on perineal muscles was mainly used to alleviate pelvic pain or pruritus ani in the light of MPS(Myofascial Pain Syndrome) theory, on which 會音(Huiyin, CV1) was located and also had pelvic pain and pruritus ani in its indications. On the acupoint, the following maneuver was used. (1) Make a patient stand and bend forward (2) Insert a needle on 會陰(Huiyin, CV1) (3) Repeat lifting and pushing (4) Draw a needle immediately without retaining needle on the acupoint Results : The patient with Pruritus ani recovered after above treatment two times and had no recurrence up to Feb. 2001. Conclusion : In this study, Needling on 會陰(Huiyin, CV1) proved to be effective in the aspect of MPS and acupuncture treatment as well, but more clinical trials are expected to follow this study.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of Dorsiflexion of foot & great toe of Dong-si acupuncture therapy for the patients with lumbago. Methods : A retrospective study has been carried out for 20 cases of lumbago patients who visited Cheongju Oriental Medical Hospital from January 1, 2002 to June 30, 2002. We have treated tem with acupuncture treatment of Dong-si acupuncture points(Yeong-gol and Dae-baek) and taken measurements with a Hand Grip Meter. Results : 1. There was no siginificance difference between the average values of the whole group and each groups divided by age before and after Dong-si acupuncture therapy. 2. The correlation of measured values before and after Dong-si acupuncture therapy was as much as 0.849, which suggests that the patients with higher value before the therapy also had higher value after the therapy. 3. The average value after Dong-si acupuncture therapy was higher than the average value before the therapy by 1.9625±8440, which suggests the therapeutic significance. Conclusion : The Dong-si acupuncture therapy is effective therapy of Dorsiflexion of foot & great toe.
Kyphotic cervical curvature, straghtening is commonly caused by trauma, muscle spasm without trauma and wrong posture, etc. Objective : This study is performed to evaluate the clinical effect of neck pain associated with Kyphotic cervical curvatre on cervical x-ray lateral view. Methods : One of the many causes, We examined the patients with neck pain & upper back pain who visited to Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Gumi Oriental Hospital of Kyung-San University from 16th June 1999 to 22th June 2000. Pre and post treatment, We evaluated the cervical angle, Jochumsen's method, VAS(visual analogue scale) and effective score of treatment. Results & Conclusion : I. Kyphotic cervical curvature is mainly caused by wrong posture during long term, sudden trauma, etc. therfore, postcervical muscles and tendon are injuryed by strong stress. So, muscle imbalance and pain is occured. 2. On these cases, The improvement index for pre/post treatment showed 28/42, 10/15, 9/30, 28/42 degree in cervical angle. Jochumsen's method showed -1/+2, -9/-3, -5/-2, -1/+2㎜. Afer treatment VAS is 2, 1, l, 1 and effective score of treatment is above good. The results suggest that treatments of Oriental Medicine(Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Chu-Na, Cupping and Physical therapy) are effective methods for neck pain with kyphotic cervical curvature on cervical x-ray lateral view.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to research for the formation of Ohaeng-acupuncture. Methods : I refered to 《Classic on Difficulty》(難經), 《Ling Shu》(靈樞), 《Zhen Jiu Ju Ying》(針灸聚英), 《Yi Xue Ru Men》(醫學入門) and annotations were excerpted and record that notied the Ohaeng-acupuncture. Results : The results obtained as follows. 1. 《Ling Shu》·<Jing Mai> "Sheng Ze Xie Zhi, Xu Ze Bu Zhi"(盛則瀉之 虛則補之) united with "Ying Sui Bu Xie"(迎隨補瀉), developed the principle of "Qu Xue" in 《Classic on Difficulty》. 2. 《Classic on Difficulty》·<The fiftieth Difficulty> explained the interdependent relations, interrestraining relations, the relations of subjugation and reverse restriction in illness condition between the five viscera according to the theory of generation, restriction, subjugation and reverse restriction in five elements. 《Classic on Difficulty》 · <The sixty fourth Difficulty> united five shu points (五兪穴) with five elements. 3. Zi jing Bu xie according to Xiang Sheng theory is develped from 《Classic on Difficulty》 · <The sixty ninth Difficulty> "Xu Ze Bu Qu Mu, Shi Ze Xie Qi Zi"(虛則補其母 實則瀉其子) to 《Classic on Difficulty》· <The seventy ninth Difficulty> , 《Zhen Jiu Ju Ying》. 4. Ta jing Bu xie according to Xiang Sheng theory is develped from 《Tu Zhu Nan Jing》 to 《Yi Xue Ru Men》. 5. The principle of treatment according to Zi-Ta jing Bu xie based Xiang Ke is develped from 《The seventy fifth Difficulty·Classic on Difficulty》 to Sa Am Do In(舍岩道人).
Oculomotor palsy presents itself with sudden onset unilateral ptosis and inability to turn the eye upward, downward, or inward, which causes visual disturbances. We observed 5 cases of patient with oculomotor palsy, the results are as follows. Methods & Results : All patients were treated by the same method and treatment was performed by means of electroacupuncture(4㎐ frequency, intensity was adjusted so that localized muscle contractions could be seen). The electrodes were placed unilaterally on BL2 to Kwangmyong(head) and GB14 to Ex-HN4. As the result, symptoms are improved remarkably. Conclusion : Patients were treated for 9.6weeks, 26.4 times(average). Improvement started after 6.6 times treatment, and symptoms were nearly cleared after 12.4 times, 4.6 weeks treatment.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to compare the improvement of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and Bell's palsy after Oriental Medicine treatment Methods : Twelve patients with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and twenty patients with Bell's Palsy who visited the Iksan Oriental Medical Hospital of Wonkwang University were evaluated. Evaluation was carried out by facial palsy grading system of Yanagihara. Results : 1. In the analysis of causes, the most common cause was 'none' with 14 cases(43.8%), stress with 8 cases(25.0%), fatigue with 4 cases(12.5%), cold and URI with 3 cases(9.0%) each. 2. In the analysis of prodrome, there was retroauricular pain in 16 cases(50.0%), headache and 'none' in 8 cases(25.0%) each. 3. There was no significant difference between RHS and Bell's palsy in evaluation score. Conclusions : RHS and Bell's palsy showed no statistical significant difference between severity of before treatment and that of after treatment.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acupuncture, moxibustion and whuallak-tang on acute back pain and liver function. Methods : We investigated 34 acute back pain patients. We treated them with acupuncture, moxibustion and bed rest, herbal medicine (Whuallak-tang, Huoluo-tang, 活絡湯) and physical therapy and we observed clinical effects and checked the changes of AST,ALT,ALP on admission and ]week later. Results : The result obtained is as follows. The patients were 58.8% male and 41.2% female ranging in age from 29 to 76 years. after treatment, of the 34 cases, 10(29.4%) were obtained excellent results and 23(67.7%) were good, and 1(2.9%) case was obtained fair result, with the total effective rate being 97.1%. AST,ALT,ALP was within normal range on admission and ]week later. and AST and ALP were decreased but had no statically significance.(P>0.05) Conclusion : This study suggests that acupuncture, moxibustion and Whuallak-tang are effective on acute back pain and should not induce hepatotoxicity. even though there are few toxic herbs in Oriental medicine, acupuncture and general herbal medication by a oriental doctor should not injure liver function of human.
Objective : I planned to write this paper to use more Dong-Si acupunture treatment clinically by comparing Dong-Si acupunture with common acupunture for lumbago. Methods : This study was carried out on 56 patients with lumbago who were hospitalized in Dongshin Univ. Oriental Hospital from 1st, April, 2001 to 31st, Octover, 2001. Group A of 28 patients were taken both common acupunture and Dong-Si acupunture. And Group B of 28 patients were only taken common acupunture. And after 10 days of admission, I checked and compared VAS(Visual Analogue Scale) and improvement index out of these two groups. Results : In improvement index, Group A is 0.3932±0.1073 and Group B is 0.2793±0.1080. So Group A is thought to be significant(P=0.000). In VAS(Visual Analogue Scale), Group A is 6.9286 1.4889 and Group B is 5.0000±1.4142. So Group A is also thought to be significant(P=0.0000). Conclusion : The group with both Dong-Si acupunture and common acupunture treatment is more effective than the group with common acupunture treatment.
Background and Objetive : Acupuncture is a valuable method of oriental medicine with broad application in many disease. It is based on the experiences of traditional oriental medicine as well as on experimentally proven biological (biochemical and neurophysiological) effects. Acupuncture theory has been explained by the meridian system that is thought to be linked with particular organs. However, in western medicine it is held that many disorders are either controlled or affected by the brain. Material and Method : In order to review the studies concerned with the mechanism related brain, we have referred to the Pubmed site and the Journal of Korean acupuncture and moxibustion Result and Conculsion : Among the 12 studies in the Journal of Korean acupuncture and moxibustion, 8 papers related neurotransmitters were done by experimental study, 4 papers related brain mapping were done by clinical study. Among the 8 studies related brain mapping in the Pubmed site, 6 clinical studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) were done and I clinical study using single-photon emission computed tomography(SPECT) was done, I paper was review article. By the above result, it would be needed further research on the acupuncture mechanism related brain using SPECT, fMRI, positron emission tomography(PET) etc.
