Vol.4 No.-

The Temple by George Herbert is a drastic turning away from the earlier love poetry. Herbert was anti-petrarchan in that he opposed on principle the vapid subjects and sought to replace them with subjects of religious faith lit up by his personal vision and experience. He distanced himself from the secular poetry of his times and totally dedicated himself to writing spiritual, meditative poetry. His poems disclose a private relationship of his individual soul to God and a testimony of the many spiritual conflicts that he experienced in his life with God. The complex and subtle processes, changes of attitudes, inner struggles and sometimes even the surrenders of the spiritual life are minutely detailed in his poems. However, he was successful in working out his conflicts and came out with resolution and integration, thereby resetting order over chaos. In his moments of epiphany and illumination, he came to realize the full meanings of sacrifice on the cross and immediately his heavy burdens were uplifted from his mind and shoulders. Even sufferings had a special meaning for him in that they led him to insight and prevenient grace along with a peace of spirit. He firmly believed in the passage that comes from the scripture of Romans 5:20, ``where sin increased, grace increased all the more``. Therefore he could relish the happy burgeoning of new hopes of salvation. In this new consciousness, the fluctuations of emotion subside and inner peace wells out of his heart. The sincerity and dignified humility with personal consecration are the very results of this new attitude toward God the creator.

      • The Wonder of Phoebe in The House of the Seven Gables

Vol.3 No.-

Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays the metaphysical problems of good and evil using the literary mode of a romance in The House of the Seven Gables. In particular the sinful disposition of human nature and its influence on later generations is illustrated through various biblical allusions in the work. Contrary to his earlier The Scarlet Letter, in this romance Hawthorne magnifies an optimistic literary vision of love through Phoebe`s wondrous care of the house of the seven gables and its residents. Phoebe`s motherly love gives rise to a great amount of change not only in the lives of main characters but also in nature in and out of the house of the seven gables. As these changes are miraculously exposed with biblical allusions. The writer`s literary vision of motherly love demonstrates its strong power in eliminating the inheritance of the dark past of the Pyncheon and Maule families. Nineteenth century in America is the period in which a huge development was made in science, and materialism was dominant. Instead of a blind optimism to the future Hawthorne reviews the deterioration of human nature in American society of the nineteenth century and insists the recovery of a moral vision of human love.

Vol.2 No.-

This is a study on the use of the Old Testament prophecies in the book of Revelation. While John does not quote the passages of the Old Testament passages with quoting formula or the exactly same wording, his book is virtually saturated with the persons, events, themes, and images that allude to the Old Testament passages. He uses those passages not by accident but with particular intention. There are remarkable thematic patterns of allusion: christological applications, ecclesiological applications, and eschatological application, the last two categories of which are discussed in this study. John the Revelator, instead of the Old Testament racial Israel, has the Christian church as its fulfillment and consummation. The author of Revelation, as a Christian prophet in the same tradition of the Old Testament prophets, reinterprets the Old Testament with a new christological and ecclesiological emphasis. Old Testament language, imagery and themes used in Revelation are generally oriented toward the end-time. By borrowing from the Old Testament, the author gives the readers clues to what will take place to the people of God during the days before parousia of Christ. It is always possible to apply one or more categories to the allusions.

Vol.1 No.-

The purpose of this study was to survey a Christian view of history from the perspective of biblical theology in order to interest 21st century people in history, who live in an age of scientific revolution and technological innovation. As shown in the usage of two Hebrew terms □□□ (dabhar) and □□□ (gala) and from the Hebrew concept of time, God, who had human history start off, witnesses His lordship over time and history by showing the future in advance through revelation to humans who cannot know it, controlling and creating history. According to a proper interpretation of the pre-history of Genesis 1-11, specifically the seven days of the Creation week, and the chronogenealogies in Genesis 5 and 11, human history is very short, that is, only a few thousand years, which makes a stark contrast to the long history of the evolutionist. From the Christian perspective, history is fundamentally a history of salvation, in which God dramatically intervenes through the person of Jesus Christ, wins a decisive victory over Satan through the Incarnation, the Cross, and the Resurrection, and then advances to the final goal of human redemption. Thus, history is essentially His story, that is, the story of Jesus Christ. Considering history as God`s communication with humans, we need to learn lessons from it and remember that we are honored to be God`s partner in His making of history. As God theCreator is the Lord of history as well as our lives, we are to live, being conscious of the ends of history and our lives, ask, accept, and follow God`s will. Also we are to invite God to intervene in our lives and our communities through prayer, asking for the Holy Spirit.

Vol.4 No.-

The integration of faith and learning has become a major concern of the Christian University for the past years. Now it is faced with important situation so that the identity and the reason for being Christian University should be rightly established. This paper serves two purposes: (1) to discuss the integration of faith and learning, and, (2) to provide an example of Leadership Training Program(LTP).Scholastic constitution and activity in Christian University depend on its scholar`s worldview. Secular scholarship depends on secular worldview and the outlook on scholarship which absolutize the autonomy of reason and rational and logical system. However, Christian scholarship should be based upon Christian worldview which takes the Biblical principle and content as the only ultimate basis of scholarship. Christian scholarship should be established upon the Biblical principle and Christian worldview. This Leadership Training Program(LTP) sets the directions which Sahmyook Health University has been taking for five years starting school year 1997-2011. The Sahmyook Health University exists to nurture students in the Christian way of life and to prepare them to become servant-leaders who are competent and committed to the service of God and humanity. The LTP is a good example of the integration of faith and learning on campus. Developing the LTP coordinates all attempts of the school to integrate faith and learning. The non-classroom activities, practices, and experiences at the Christian University, such as LTP, need to be considered by reflective Christian educators concerning how to practically and successfully incorporate faith into the variety of subjects taught in the classroom.

Vol.4 No.-

Vol.2 No.-

Ellen G. White used the Book of Revelation more than ninety times in her book The Great Controversy. Differently from what Jon Paulien classified according to various purposes, I have classified her uses into five categories: (1) direct quotations for expression; (2) direct quotations to describe situations; (3) indirect quotations for expression; (4) indirect quotations to describe situations; (5) interpretations. Ellen White did not design The Great Controversy to be a verse-by-verse commentary on the Book of Revelation. She merely used the biblical text as needed, and rarely for theological purposes. Rather, Revelation is cited for homilitical purposes, and even more oftern for the sake of expression. White focused her interpretive comments on a few chapters of Revelation. I found more interpretations than homiletical and theological uses on those chapters. This was what was least expected. I can affirm three ideas here. First, I came to recognize one more time that The Great Controversy is not a verse-by-verse commentary on the Book of Revelation. Therefore White did not interpret every verse. It is foolish to look here for answers to all interpretive queries. The Great Controversy does not apply the seven seals and seven trumpets to the historical events. White used some texts to describe Christ`s second coming when they unmistakably described the scene of the second coming. Her usage shows that White did not apply the contents of Revelation arbitrarily, but was very careful in handling the text. Second, The Great Controversy did apply a few passages of Revelation to historical events. Since the theme of the Great Controversy is a huge conflict over truth, White dealt with the contents of Revelation which concern the truth debate. Therefore chapters 11-14 were interpreted in detail. The way she used these chapters was different from her general use of the Bible. Third, White focussed on the final triumph of Christ in The Great Controversy. This she illustrated in depth, from the time Satan lost his strength and received punishments to the time when the new heaven and the new earth are restored and the New Jerusalem comes down and the saints entere there. Specifically she interpreted the biblical passages related to this restoration literally rather than symbolically.
