        Antiquorum Sensing Activity of Seed Oils from Oleaginous Plants and Protective Effect During Challenge with Chromobacterium violaceum

        Seed oils from oleaginous plants are rich in fatty acids (FAs) that play important roles in the health of the consumers. Recent studies indicate that FA also can play an important role in communication and regulation of virulence in bacteria. Nevertheless, evidence demonstrating protection against bacterial infections mediated by their quorum sensing inhibition (QSI) activity is scarce. In this study, sunflower, chia, and amaranth oils, were assayed for their QSI capacity by inhibiting violacein production and alkaline exoprotease activity of Chromobacterium violaceum. In vitro assays revealed that the oils exhibited QSI activities, whereas in vivo they delayed death of mice inoculated intraperitoneally with the bacterium. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry analysis of the oils indicated the presence of saturated FA (SAFA) and unsaturated FA as main components. Through a structure–activity relationship study of free FAs, bactericidal effect was identified mainly for polyunsaturated FAs, whereas QSI activity was restricted to SAFA of chains 12–18 carbon atoms in length. These data correlate with a possible interaction suggested by molecular docking analysis of lauric, myristic, and stearic acids with the CviR protein. Our study highlights the antiquorum sensing potential of SAFA, which may be future antivirulence therapeutic agents for the treatment of bacterial infections.

        Comparative study of acute in vitro and short-term in vivo triiodothyronine treatments on the contractile activity of isolated rat thoracic aortas

        We aimed to characterize the participation of rapid non-genomic and delayed non-genomic/genomic or genomic mechanisms in vasoactive effects to triiodothyronine (T3), emphasizing functional analysis of the involvement of these mechanisms in the genesis of nitric oxide (NO) of endothelial or muscular origin. Influences of in vitro and in vivo T3 treatments on contractile and relaxant responsiveness of isolated rat aortas were studied. In vivo T3-treatment was 500 μg·kg⁻¹·d⁻¹, subcutaneous injection, for 1 (T31d) and 3 (T33d) days. In experiments with endothelium- intact aortic rings contracted with phenylephrine, increasing concentrations of T3 did not alter contractility. Likewise, in vitro T3 did not modify relaxant responses induced by acetylcholine or sodium nitroprusside (SNP) nor contractile responses elicited by phenylephrine or angiotensin II in endothelium-intact aortas. Concentration- response curves (CRCs) to acetylcholine and SNP in endothelium-intact aortic rings from T31d and T33d rats were unmodified. T33d, but not T31d, treatment diminished CRCs to phenylephrine in endothelium-intact aortic rings. CRCs to phenylephrine remained significantly depressed in both endothelium-denuded and endothelium- intact, nitric oxide synthase inhibitor-treated, aortas of T33d rats. In endotheliumdenuded aortas of T33d rats, CRCs to angiotensin II, and high K⁺ contractures, were decreased. Thus, in vitro T3 neither modified phenylephrine-induced active tonus nor CRCs to relaxant and contractile agonists in endothelium-intact aortas, discarding rapid non-genomic actions of this hormone in smooth muscle and endothelial cells. Otherwise, T33d-treatment inhibited aortic smooth muscle capacity to contract, but not to relax, in an endothelium- and NO-independent manner. This effect may be mediated by delayed non-genomic/genomic or genomic mechanisms.

      • Simulation of electromagnetic fluctuations in thermal magnetized plasma

        <P>The present paper carries out a particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation in order to validate the recently formulated theory of electromagnetic fluctuations emitted spontaneously in thermal magnetized plasmas (Yoon and L?pez 2017 <I>Phys. Plasmas</I> <B>24</B> 022117). Numerical plots of theoretically constructed fluctuation spectra and computer simulated fluctuation spectra are compared. While the two results produce an overall favorable agreement for subluminous regime in angular frequency versus wave number space, namely, the domain characterized by phase speed less than the speed of light <I>in vacuo</I>, the present PIC simulation also shows that fluctuation spectra are highly enhanced in the close vicinity of linear eigenmodes, which includes superluminal range that does not satisfy the linear cyclotron wave-particle resonance condition. Since the theory of electromagnetic spontaneous emission, which is based upon linear plasma response and linear wave-particle resonant interactions, strictly forbids emissions in such a regime, the PIC code simulation can only be understood in terms of nonlinear wave-particle interaction. This calls for nonlinear generalization of the spontaneous emission theory.</P>

        A Novel High Performance Architecture for H.264/AVC Deblocking Filtering

        This letter presents an architecture based on a new double-filter strategy to perform the adaptive in-loop filtering process specified by the H.264/AVC standard. The proposed architecture shows considerable advantages, both in terms of hardware cost and latency, when compared with the approaches found in the most recent literature.

        Enzymatic cross-linking of ferulated arabinoxylan: effect of laccase or peroxidase catalysis on the gel characteristics

        Arabinoxylans (AX) gels at 4% (w/v) wereprepared using laccase (LAX gels) or peroxidase (PAXgels), and their cross-linking, rheological, structural, andspectroscopic characteristics were investigated. LAX gelspresented lower amount of 5,50-diferulic acid (11%),smaller mesh size (128 nm), and higher hardness (37 N)and elasticity (430 Pa) than the PAX gels (28%, 197 nm,7 N, and 120 Pa, respectively). Microscopy of the LAXgels showed linked strands, while the system was lessconnected in the PAX gels. The Raman band at 2895 cm-1of the LAX and PAX gels was less intense, indicatingenhanced hydrogen bonding compared to that of AX. Thisdecrease was less dramatic for the PAX gels. The greatercontent of 5,50-diferulic acid in PAX gels could favorintrachain bonds, affecting their rheological, structural, andspectroscopic characteristics. Laccase may be a betteroption than peroxidase for AX gelation intended for foodand biotechnological applications.

        Parametric sensitivity analysis and ozone mass transfer modeling in a gas–liquid reactor for advanced water treatment

        A computational model for a reactor used in advanced water treatment was proposed to represent,simulate and predict the mass transfer process of ozone in water (gas–liquid). A graphic interface wasdesigned to simulate the ozone gas transfer into the liquid. In addition, the values of the mass transfercoefficient, and the self-decomposition of ozone, could be determined for different initial conditions. Themodel for ozone mass transfer was represented by two differential equations derived from the massbalances of the system. Finally a sensitivity analysis wasmade to determine the effect of the parametersover the operating variables.

        NLMC분류표는 의학 교육의 지원을 위한 자료들을 조직화 하기 위해서 개발된, 그리고 약학과 약물학을 포함하는 정보자료를 분류하기 위해서 미국에서 가장 널리 사용되었던 초기의 분류표들로부터 기본적인 아이디어를 사용해서 1946년에 개발되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 MLMC의 구조가 약제학적 문헌을 어떻게 적응시키고 그 타당성을 경정하는지를 검토하고자 하는 것이다. 필자는 서지적 기록을 가지고 1,979종의 단행본에 매겨진 NLMC분류번호를 분석하였다. 이 분석한 결과는 NLMC의 구조가 하위류(sub-class) QV701-835에 있어서 해당 문헌의 42%를 한데 모은 한편 나머지의 41%는 NLMC분류표 전체를 통해서 분산되는 것으로 나타났다. 추가로 17%는 LCC로 분류되었다.

        Soda Pulping of Sunflower Stalks. Influence of Process Variables on the Resulting Pulp

        This paper discusses the influence of independent variables in the pulping of sunflower stalks [viz. the effects that the alkali concentration (5~15%), anthraquinone concentration (0~0.1%), temperature (125~175℃), time (30~90 min), and the liquid/solid ratio (4~8) have on the yield, holocellulose content, lignin content, and kappa number of the resulting pulp]. By using a central composite factorial design, equations relating each dependent variable to the different independent variables were derived; they reproduced the experimental results for the dependent variables with errors less than 15%. The Kappa number values were reproduced with errors less than 19%. This study confirms the feasibility of applying a soda-anthraquinone pulping process to sunflower stalks. Using a short time, a low liquid/solid ratio, a high temperature and anthraquinone concentration, and a medium-to-high alkali concentration (13.9%), we obtained values for holocellulose, lignin, and kappa number that differ by less than 13.7, 14.9, and 20.1%, respectively, from the optimum values (viz. 97.8%, 3.9%, and 14.9, respectively). However, the yield is 36.1% lower than the optimum value (68.7%). These conditions provide a pulp having acceptable properties. According to the results, paper sheets can be obtained that have characteristics similar to those obtained using similar alternative raw materials, and considerable savings should occur on operating costs.

        La antig?edad cl?sica como fuente y contexto en El esclavo en grillos de oro de Bances Candamo

        La antigüedad clásica sirve de trasfondo a la comedia El esclavo en grillos de oro en donde el dramaturgo aurisecular Francisco Bances Candamo(1662-1704)refleja sus inquietudes políticas. Con la presentación de los enredos políticos del imperio romano, el dramaturgo asturiano consigue que el lector-espectador tome conciencia de la sombra amenazadora que acosa a la monarquía de Carlos II el Hechizado (1661-1700), dada la ausencia de heredero. La crítica ha mencionado varios tratados destinados a la educación de príncipes. Sin embargo, no se ha mencionado nunca un texto que parece haber tenido también mucha influencia en su obra: la "Oración" a Nicocles, rey de Chipre, de Isócrates. En El esclavo en grillos de oro, además del esperado panegírico al rey, encontramos una osadía que acabaría costando muy cara a su autor. Como Isócrates, Bances Candamo tratade educar al rey para el buen gobierno e incluso se atreve a volver a mencionar el tema tabú de la sucesión. Al instar indirectamente al rey a que buscara un heredero para España, y al criticar a los allegados al emperador romano, la corte lo consideró una afrenta tanto al rey como al privado de Carlos II. De hecho, tras ser herido en el pecho por un espectador que vio en El esclavo en grillos de oro un ataque al Conde de Oropesa, privado del rey, Bances Candamo se vio obligado, como se mencionó anteriormente, a dejar su cargo y huir de Madrid por un tiempo.

        Characterization of MIPA and DIPA aqueous solutions in relation to absorption, speciation and degradation

        The carbon dioxide absorption process by 1-amino-2-propanol (MIPA) and bis(2-hydroxypropyl)amine(DIPA) aqueous solutions in bubble column reactor have been studied considering the influence of liquidphase physical properties and the amine group substitution on the overall process. Themain objective ofthis work was to establish the carbon dioxide capture reaction mechanism for these systems, and then toobtain the predominant stoichiometry to calculate the mass transfer coefficient. NMR technique wasused to determine the species present in the liquid phase during the absorption process and to confirmthe reaction mechanism. The degradation of these amines was also evaluated.
