In this paper, we study semi-discrete central-upwind difference schemes with a modified multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP) to solve two-dimensional hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. In general, high-order central difference schemes for conservation laws involve no Riemann solvers or characteristic decompositions but have a tendency to smear linear discontinuities. To overcome this drawback of central-upwind schemes, we use a MLP that uses multi-dimensional information for slope limitation to control the oscillations across discontinuities for multi-dimensional applications. Some numerical results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

In addition to producing antinociception, opioidsexert profound effects on body temperature. This studyaimed at comparing antinociceptive and hyperthermicresponses between two groups of l-opioid receptor agonists:fentanyl (4-anilinopiperidine-type) and morphine(phenanthrene-type) derivatives in rats. Analgesic activitywas assessed by tail immersion test and the body temperatureby insertion of a thermometer probe into the colon. Fentanyl (F), (±)-cis-3-methyl fentanyl (CM), (±)-cis-3-carbomethoxy fentanyl (C), (±)trans-3-carbomethoxyfentanyl (T) and (±)-cis-3 butyl fentanyl (B) produceddose-dependent increase in antinociception and hyperthermia. The relative order of analgesic potency was:CM(11.27)[F(1)[C(0.35)CT(0.11)CB(0.056). Similar tothis, the relative order of hyperthermic potency was:CM(8.43)[F(1)[C(0.46)CT(0.11)CB(0.076). Morphine(M), oxycodone (O), thebacon (T) and 6,14-ethenomorphinan-7-methanol, 4,5-epoxy-6-fluoro-3-hydroxy-a,a,17-trimethyl-, (5a,7a) (E) also produced dose-dependentincrease in antinociception and hyperthermia. Amongmorphine derivatives the relative order of analgesicpotency was: E(56)[O(5)CT(2.6)[M(1), and similar tothis, the relative order of hyperthermic potency was:E(37)[O(3)CT(2.3)[M(1). Morphine (phenanthrene-type)and fentanyl (4-anilinopiperidine-type) derivatives producedhyperthermia in rats at doses about 2 times lower, and 6–11 times higher, than their median antinociceptivedoses, respectively. This study is first to identify differencebetween these two classes of opioid drugs in their potenciesin producing hyperthermia. Further studies are needed toclarify the significance of these findings.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is extremely important antioxidant enzyme and plays essential roles in plant growth, development, and response to diferent abiotic stresses. The SODs genes family has been characterized in several plant species; however, there is no report on identifying these genes in Cofea spp. In this study, the objective was to identify and analyze in silico the SODs genes using the three genomes of Cofea spp. We used various bioinformatics tools to perform physicochemical analyses of proteins, gene structure, chromosome mapping, conserved domain, cis-acting elements, syntenic and phylogenetic analyses, and miRNA targets. A total of 32 SODs genes were identifed in the genomes of Cofea spp. (9—C. canephora; 13—C. arabica L.; 9—C. eugenioides), and phylogenetically classifed into 3 subgroups, copper zinc (Cu/ZnSOD/CSD), manganese (Mn-SOD/MSD), and iron (Fe-SOD/FSD), respectively. Physicochemical analyses of the cofee SODs proteins revealed that the length, molecular weight, and pI values varied between species from 105 (CcCSD4) to 317 (CeCSD7) amino acids, 12.00 (CeCSD4) to 34.59 (CeFSD1) kDa, and 5.37 (CeFSD1) at 9.35 pI (CeCSD4). The intron numbers of SODs genes ranged from 1 to 8. Chromosomal mapping revealed an uneven distribution of SODs genes in the chromosomes of the respective cofee species. In addition, we identifed eight stress-responsive cis-elements in the promoters of cofee SODs genes. In addition, we identifed a total of 13, 12, and 11 putative miRNA families, which can target genes encoding SODs in the 3 cofee species. This study will serve as a biotechnological basis for the characterization of SODs genes involved in regulating gene expression under adverse conditions. This allows the development of biotechnological strategies to ensure greater sustainability of cofee production by establishing ways to reduce damage caused by stressful conditions in cofee production.

A salt-tolerant cellulase secreted by a marine Bacillus sp. SR22 strain with wide resistance to temperature and pH was purified and characterized. Its approximate mass was 37 kDa. The endoglucanase, named as Bc22Cel, was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, gel filtration chromatography, and extraction from the gel after non-reducing sodium dodecyl sufate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The optimal pH value and temperature of Bc22Cel were 6.5 and 60°C, respectively. The purified Bc22Cel showed a considerable halophilic property, being able to maintain more than 70% of residual activity even when pre-incubated with 1.5 M NaCl for 1 h. Kinetic analysis of the purified enzyme showed the K m and Vmax to be 0.704 mg/ml and 29.85 μmol·ml-1·min-1, respectively. Taken together, the present data indicate Bc22Cel as a potential and useful candidate for industrial applications, such as the bioconversion of sugarcane bagasse to its derivatives.

Prickly palm cactus husk was used as a solid-state fermentation support-substrate for production of the ligninolytic enzymes laccase, peroxide manganese, and lignin peroxidase by Aspergillus niger. Effects of water activity, temperature, and fermentation time on enzymatic production were evaluated using a central composite rotatable design. Response surface methodology revealed that maximum enzyme production was achieved at 73.38 h of fermentation, a water activity of 0.87 Aw, at 28.74oC for laccase, at 65.33 h, 0.89 Aw, and 28.96oC for lignin peroxidase, and at 70.44 h, 0.91 Aw, and 28.84oC for manganese peroxidase. Optimized enzyme production was 9,023.67 UI/L for laccase, 2,234.75 UI/L for lignin peroxidase, and 8,534.81 UI/L for manganese peroxidase. Thermostability and pH stability were observed for all enzymes. Enzymatic deactivation kinetic experiments indicated that enzymes remained active after freezing of crude extracts.

Studies have shown that the consumption of a diet containing whole grains may improve metabolic homeostasis and is related to the reduction of risk factors for the development of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. We aimed to investigate the effects of Triticum aestivum and Triticum turgidum on the metabolic profile of Wistar rats. Animals were divided into G1 (control group), G2 (T. turgidum), and G3 (T. aestivum). Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were evaluated after 45 days of treatment with both types of wheat. Our results showed that the use of the common or green wheat improved body weight percentage, visceral fat, glycemia, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and atherogenic indices such as atherogenic index, CCR1, and CCR2. Furthermore, wheat may also improve high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The health-promoting properties of wheat occur probably due to the content of phytochemicals, antioxidants, and fibers. We suggest that the intake of T. aestivum and T. turgidum may be helpful in the prevention or treatment of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a polyphagous insect whose control mainly involves the use of synthetic insecticides that can be highly toxic to non-target organisms and lead to the se lection of resistant populations. This work reports the effects of the saline extract of Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes (CE) on the feeding survival and midgut morphophysiology of S. frugiperda third instar caterpillars. CE exerted a phagostimulant effect to the caterpillars but was not able to kill them. Despite of this, the midguts of caterpillars treated with CE (12.8 mg/g) showed intense disorganization of epithelium, vacuolation of the cytoplasm of columnar cells and increased size of goblet cells, as well as absence of the peritrophic membrane. The caterpillars treated with CE showed a reduction in the amount of neutral polysaccharides and protein content at the midgut epithelial cells. Together these data may indicate that the ingestion of CE in higher concentrations or by a longer period would lead the caterpillars to death or to damage in development. In conclusion, CE ingestion resulted in damage to the midgut morphology of caterpillars, with a reduction in carbohydrate and protein content.

( Sofia Figueiredo Marques Dos Santos ),( Isabel Maria Ribeiro Mesquita ),( Amandio Braga Dos Santos Greca ),( Antonio Fernando Boleto Rosado ) 체육과학연구원 2010 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.22 No.2
This study aimed to provide a better understanding of what coaches value about the knowledge necessary to effectively accomplish their job tasks across a range of domains. Coaches` perceptions related to knowledge areas were analyzed regarding the influence of professional experience and academic background. A sample of 343 coaches from 22 different sports responded to a questionnaire applied to understand coaches` perception of the knowledge value, and to relate it to demographic characteristics. Data analysis began with an exploratory factorial analysis with Maximum Likelihood Factoring (MLF) and Oblimin rotation. The emergent factors were then submitted to One-way ANOVA and Tukey`s post hoc multiple comparisons to analyse the influence of professional experience and academic background. The results showed that important knowledge areas for coaches are assembled in two major domains: knowledge about sport-specific contents and knowledge about educating other coaches and management. Coaches` characteristics influenced their perceptions about the value of sport-specific knowledge as the more experienced coaches and those with higher education degrees, both in Physical Education and Sport and in other courses, ascribed more importance to sport-specific knowledge than coaches with less experience or academic qualification. On the other hand, coaches` characteristics did not induce differences in coaches` perceptions about knowledge to educate other coaches and management.

Objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease considered an important public health problem. In recent years, its prevalence has been exponentially rising in many developing countries. Chronic complications of DM are important causes of morbidity and mortality among patients, which impair their health and quality of life. Knowledge on disease prevention, etiology, and management is essential to deal with parents, patients, and caregivers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge regarding DM in an adult population from a Middle-western Brazilian city. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study covering 178 adults, aged 18-64 years, who answered a diabetes knowledge questionnaire. In order to identify the difference between groups, analysis of variance was used. Results: Higher knowledge scores were found regarding the role of sugars on DM causality, diabetic foot care, and the effects of DM on patients (blindness, impaired wound healing, and male sexual dysfunction). However, lower scores were found amongst types of DM, hyperglycemic symptoms, and normal blood glucose levels. Females tended to achieve better knowledge scores than males. Conclusion: Women had better knowledge regarding types of DM, normal blood glucose values, and consequences of hyperglycemia revealed that diabetes education should be improved.
