Does higher technical efficiency induce a higher service level? A paradox association in the context of port operations

Ziaul Haque Munim 한국해운물류학회 2020 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.36 No.4

Researchers and practitioners are benchmarking technical efficiency of ports and exploring the drivers of high efficiency. Paradoxically, this study argues that high technical efficiency (TE = 1) is not always essential, but an optimal level needs to be achieved while balancing the port service level. This study applies data envelopment analysis (DEA) and free disposal hull (FDH) methods to perform efficiency rankings of 38 container terminals from 17 different ports in 12 Asian countries. Four terminals are technically efficient (TE = 1) in all frontier approaches, thereof one Bangladeshi, one Chinese, one Indian and one Vietnamese. Furthermore, this study presents a case study combining qualitative and quantitative data analysis to investigate the characteristics of a port hosting high technically efficient container terminals The finding suggests that ports with growing throughput, not investing actively in infrastructure and equipment, become high technically efficient over time, but the higher their technical efficiency, the lower their service level

Estimating wetland insecurity index for Chatra wetland adjacent English Bazar Municipality of West Bengal

Sk. Ziaul,Swades Pal 대한공간정보학회 2017 Spatial Information Research Vol.25 No.6

Charta wetland adjacent to the English Bazar Municipality is considered as the kidney of this urban area. In last 25 years, 43% of total wetland area is urbanized and this trend still continues. This paper aims to compute wetland insecurity index based on 11 selected natural (five) and man induced parameters (six) at multi-temporal scale (1990, 2010 and 2017). Weighted linear combination method is used for preparing wetland insecurity indices (natural, man-induced and integrated parameters specific) in Arc GIS (v-9.3) environment. Result clearly exhibited that man-induced parameters are more crucial for bringing greater north eastern wetland fringe area under high insecurity. Highly insecure wetland covers 6.6% to total area in case of man-induced parameters based spatial model is recorded in 2017 superseded previous phases. In case of natural parameter centric wetland insecurity model, no such highly insecure zone is found. Total 20.17, 33.23 and 72.18 ha areas are appeared as highly insecure wetland area for integrated wetland insecurity models for 1990, 2010 and 2017 respectively indicating increasing spatial extent. Built up area, population density, sedimentation seasonal drying out of the parts of wetland are appeared as major reason behind growing wetland insecurity in Chatra wetland.

Forecasting container throughput of major Asian ports using the Prophet and hybrid time series models

Munim Ziaul Haque,Fiskin Cemile Solak,Nepal Bikram,Chowdhury Mohammed Mojahid Hossain 한국해운물류학회 2023 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.39 No.2

Forecasting container throughput is critical for improved port planning, operations, and investment strategies. Reliability of forecasting methods need to be ensured before utilizing their outcomes in decision making. This study compares forecasting performances of various time series methods, namely autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA), Holt-Winter's Exponential Smoothing (HWES), and the Prophet model. Since forecast combinations can improve performance, simple and weighted combinations of ARIMA, SARIMA and HWES have been explored, too. Monthly container throughput data of port of Shanghai, Busan, and Nagoya are used. The Prophet model outperforms others in the in-sample forecasting, while combined models outperform others in the out-sample forecasting. Due to the observed differences between the in-sample and out-sample forecast accuracy measures, this study proposes a forecast performance metric consistency check approach for informed real-world applications of forecasting models in port management decision-making.

        풍력터빈의 구조특성 평가에 관한 연구-Part1

        이경수,Huque, Ziaul,Kommalapati, Raghava,한상을 한국공간구조학회 2014 한국공간구조학회지 Vol.14 No.4

This paper presents the structural model development and verification processes of wind turbine blade. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine which the wind tunnel and structural test data has publicly available is used for the study. The wind turbine assembled by blades, rotor, nacelle and tower. The wind blade connected to rotor. To make the whole turbine structural model, the mass and stiffness properties of all parts should be clear and given. However the wind blade, hub, nacelle, rotor and power generating machinery parts have difficulties to define the material properties because of the composite and assembling nature of that. Nowadays to increase the power generating coefficient and cost efficiency, the highly accurate aerodynamic loading evaluating technique should be developed. The Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) is the emerging new way to evaluate the aerodynamic force on the rotating wind blade. To perform the FSI analysis, the fluid and structural model which are sharing the associated interface topology have to be provided. In this paper, the structural model of blade development and verifying processes have been explained for Part1. In following Part2 paper, the processes of whole turbine system will be discussing.

        풍력터빈의 구조특성 평가에 관한 연구-Part2

        이경수,Huque, Ziaul,Kommalapati, Raghava,한상을 한국공간구조학회 2015 한국공간구조학회지 Vol.15 No.1

This paper presents the structural model verification process of whole wind turbine blade including blade model which proposed in Part1 paper. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine which the wind tunnel and structural test data has publicly available is used for the study. In the Part1 of this paper, the processes of structural model development and verification process of blade only are introduced. The whole wind turbine composed by blade, rotor, nacelle and tower. Even though NREL has reported the measured values, the material properties of blade and machinery parts are not clear but should be tested. Compared with the other parts, the tower which made by steel pipe is rather simple. Since it does not need any considerations. By the help of simple eigen-value analysis, the accuracy of structural stiffness and mass value of whole wind turbine system was verified by comparing with NREL's reported value. NREL has reported the natural frequency of blade, whole turbine, turbine without blade and tower only models. According to the comparative studies, the proposed material and mass properties are within acceptable range, but need to be discussing in future studies, because our material properties of blade does not match with NREL's measured values.

Hypertension prevalence and its trend in Bangladesh: evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis

        Chowdhury Mohammad Ziaul Islam,Rahman Meshbahur,Akter Tanjila,Akhter Tania,Ahmed Arifa,Shovon Minhajul Arifin,Farhana Zaki,Chowdhury Nashit,Turin Tanvir C. 대한고혈압학회 2020 Clinical Hypertension Vol.26 No.3

Background: Hypertension, itself being a major chronic condition, is one of the most significant risk factors for premature cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Hypertension is responsible for 13% of global deaths and threequarters of the world’s hypertensive population reside in low- and middle-income countries. Bangladesh is one of those countries that experiencing an epidemiological transition from communicable to non-communicable diseases, a nutritional transition from a traditional diet to process and fast food, and an increase in a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in increased hypertension prevalence. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify existing research on hypertension prevalence in Bangladesh, summarize findings and assess its temporal change. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and PubMed and relevant references to identify studies on the prevalence of hypertension in Bangladesh. We used Random-effects meta-analysis to pool the prevalence estimates and performed subgroup analyses. We assessed heterogeneity, a trend in prevalence of hypertension and publication bias in selected studies. Results: Our search initially identified 735 articles and after removing duplicates, reviewing titles and abstracts, and screening full texts, 53 studies were finally selected. The studies comprised 305,432 subjects and reported overall, gender-specific, geographical location specific and criteria specific prevalence of hypertension. We identified the range of hypertension prevalence is from 1.10% to 75.0% and the overall weighted pooled prevalence of hypertension is 20.0%. An extremely high heterogeneity (I2 = 99.53%; Cochran Q-statistic p < 0.001) was observed in the prevalence of hypertension. Consequently, we performed subgroup analysis based on gender, age group and geographical location of the study participants, the cut-off level used to define hypertension, and the types of hypertension reported and presented our findings accordingly. An overall increasing trend of hypertension prevalence is also observed. Conclusions: The prevalence of hypertension is high and rising in Bangladesh. Strategies targeting prevention are required to mitigate a further increase in the prevalence and reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with it.

Naima Khatun,Jannatul Naima,Ziaul Karim,Lamia Alam 한국유통과학회 2016 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.3 No.3

Shareholders solely depend on annual reports to make investment, credit and other decisions. Investors expect that information should be reliable, relevant, comparable, consistent and thus easy to use for decision making. But whether the importance of annual reports to all shareholders is equally significant is a question of research. Thus, this research study tries to find out the importance of reading annual reports to the investors. A questionnaire survey is conducted on investors considering thirty one general shareholders and six brokers. This research based survey finds that most of the shareholders have no knowledge about accounting or finance and they have little knowledge about capital markets due to lack of training. This study also finds that general shareholders read an annual report at least moderately except value added statement, chairman’s review, director’s report and rumor. This study recommends human resource should be developed through adequate training, and annual reports should provide transparent and quality information which will ultimately increase the confidence of investors.
