          Experimental Studies on Progressive Collapse Behavior of RC Frame Structures: Advances and Future Needs

          In the recent two decades, the progressive collapse of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures attracted unprecedented research interests in the structural engineering community. Experiments are regarded as an essential method in this field since actual cases can barely provide sufficient and effective data to support rigorous research. In this paper, prevailing experimental assumptions and configurations among over 100 series of experiments are quantitatively revealed by a bibliometric collection based on systematic search in an academic database. Since numerous experiments have been reported on the progressive collapse of RC frame structures, this paper subsequently presents a state-of-the-art review summarizing both experimental consensuses and controversies constituted by three main aspects: (a) static mechanisms, (b) dynamic behavior, and (c) threat-dependent research. The significance of secondary mechanisms, existing problems of dynamic effects, and potential flaws of the threat-independent assumption are discussed in detail with experimental findings. Future needs are emphasized on research targets, correlations between experiments and design, dynamic effects, threat-dependent issues, and retrofitting. These recommendations might help researchers or designers realize a more reliable and realistic progressive collapse design of RC frame structures in the future.

          EMP3 Overexpression in Primary Breast Carcinomas is not Associated with Epigenetic Aberrations

          Epithelial membrane protein 3 (EMP3) is a trans-membrane signaling molecule with important roles in the regulation of apoptosis, differentiation and invasion of cancer cells, but the detailed is largely still unknown. We analyzed the mRNA levels and methylation statuses of EMP3 in 63 primary breast carcinomas and assessed their correlations with clinicopathologic variables. The expression of EMP3 mRNA in primary breast carcinomas was significantly higher than the expression of 20 normal breast tissues (p<10-7). EMP3 overexpression in breast carcinomas was significantly related to histological grade III (p=3.9×10-7), lymph node metastasis (p= 0.003), and strong Her-2 expression (p=3.3×10-6). Hypermethylation frequencies of EMP3 were detected in 36.5% of breast carcinomas by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. However, no significant correlations were found between methylation status of EMP3 and mRNA expression levels as well as other clinical parameters. In conclusion, EMP3 may be a novel marker of tumor aggressiveness. Overexpression of EMP3 in primary breast carcinoma is not associated with DNA methylation.

          Significance of “Deqi” Response in Acupuncture Treatment: Myth or Reality

          Acupuncture has been practiced in China for over 2000 years to treat a variety of diseases based on the “meridian theory,” as described in the “Yellow Emperor’s Classics of Inter- nal Medicine.” Deqi refers to the excitation of qi or vital energy inside meridians by acupuncture needle stimulation. Patients often experience multidimensional and intense needling sensations such as numbness, soreness, distention, heaviness, dull pain, and sharp pain during acupuncture stimulation. Deqi is considered as an important parameter in the process of achieving therapeutic effectiveness in acupuncture treatment. Under- standing this phenomenon from neurophysiological aspects is important for clinical prac- tice and enables practitioners to perform quantitative acupuncture evaluation to obtain a reliable prognosis of acupuncture treatment. This review paper describes our current knowledge and understanding of Deqi from a physiological aspect.

        • Apoptotic Effects of psiRNA-STAT3 on 4T1 Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro

          Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a Lipofectamine2000 (Life2000) Transfection Reagent transfected psiRNA-STAT3 plasmid on 4T1 breast cancer cells. Materials and Methods: MTT was used to detect the cell proliferation of breast cancer 4T1 cells at different periods (0h, 6h, 8h, 10h); the cell cycle was assessed by flow cytometry; variation of apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential was observed under a fluorescence microscope; immunohistochemical staining was used to determine the expression of caspase-3 and cyclin-D1 protein. Results: An obvious effect of inhibition to 4T1 cancer cells could be observed at 8h after the psiRNA-STAT3 was transfected. Typical alterations of apoptotic morphological features were visible in the psiRNA-STAT3 treatment group. Mitochondrial membrane potential decreased significantly, the number of cells was increased in G0/G1 phase, and the number of cells was decreased in S phase, and the data were statistically significant (p<0.05), compared with the Scramble and Mock groups. Expression of caspase-3 protein was increased significantly, while that of cyclin D1 was significantly decreased. Conclusions: Life2000 transfected psiRNA-STAT3 plasmid can inhibit 4T1 tumor cell proliferation and promote apoptosis of 4T1 tumor cells, which process depends on the regulation of expression of cyclin D1 and caspase-3 protein.

          Transverse Tensile Deformation and Failure of Three-dimensional Five-directional Braided Carbon Fiber Composites

          Accurate characterisation of transverse tensile deformation and damage evolution is of importance for evaluatingthe failure behaviors of three-dimensional (3D) braided composites. In the present study, a finite element method (FEM) andseveral non-destructive testing methods including acoustic emission, digital image correlation, and infrared thermography aredeveloped to investigate the transverse tensile deformation and damage evolution of 3D five-directional braided composites. In the finite element approach, a matrix-impregnated fiber bundles (MIFB) model and a representative volume cell (RVC)model, which take into account the fiber bundles and matrix, are respectively established to predict the effective mechanicalproperties of fiber bundles and simulate the deformation and progressive damage of such composites. The damaged locationsand the failure modes including matrix crack, fiber debonding and shear fracture of fiber are predicted and verified byexperimental tests. The non-destructive tests show that the transverse tensile fracture process can be divided into four stageswhich correspond to acoustic emission signals severally. The combination of the FEM based numerical modeling andmultiple non-destructive characterisation methods can accurately monitor the deformation and damage behaviors of 3Dbraided composites under transverse tensile loads and thus provide a reference for structural health monitoring of compositesin practical application.

          Whether can Posner-Schlossman syndrome be treated through a physiotherapy, ciliary muscle training method?

          A new physiotherapy named Ciliary Muscle Training method and one successful case had been reported first for treatment of Posner-Schlossman Syndrome (PSS), also known as Glaucomatocyclitic Crisis. When a person observed a back and forth moving object, the ciliary muscle would involuntarily do sometimes tense and sometimes relaxant exercise which can relieve the tensive state of the ciliary muscle of patients suffering PSS disease. Through this period of continued treatment, this ciliary muscle training method can improve the health status of the ciliary muscle and finally achieve the purpose of curing PSS disease. In this successful case, the patient's feedback result was very good after receiving our suggested ciliary muscle training method as an attempt to treat PSS, ill right eye of this PSS patient showed normal appearance without any differences from the other normal eye, his vision test values of naked eye were both 4.9 under nearly 200 degrees of myopia. High intraocular pressure (IOP) was mitigated, measured IOP value was in the normal (≦ 21 mmHg) and comfortable state without PSS relapse until now. Therefore, ciliary muscle training method could be a potential clinical treatment approach to PSS disease.

          Language Attitude of Ethnic Chinese in Four Southeast Asian Countries

          Today, tens of millions of ethnic Chinese are scattered throughout Southeast Asia as a result of the massive influx of immigrants from China during the past several centuries. The present study analyzed the language attitude of the ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia, focusing on four countries: Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. For this purpose, a total of 177 samples of language attitude questionnaire were collated. The questionnaire was composed of 11 language attitude-related elements in affective, behavioral, and cognitive components with respect to the multiple languages used in the countries: national language, English, local Chinese dialects, Mandarin, and others. Analysis of the data reveals intriguing findings about the language attitude of the ethnic Chinese in different countries. Both the similarities and the differences of language attitude are found among the ethnic Chinese groups in the Southeast Asian countries, reflecting the political, economic, and social situations of each country. The prospect of the local Chinese dialects look dim due to exogenous factors surrounding the linguistic ecosystems in the region.

          Assessment of the crest cracks of the Pubugou rockfill dam based on parameters back analysis

          The crest of the Pubugou central core rockfill dam (CCRD) cracked in the first and second impounding periods. To evaluate the safety of the Pubugou CCRD, an inversion analysis of the constitutive model parameters for rockfill materials is performed based on the in situ deformation monitoring data. The aim of this work is to truly reflect the deformation state of the Pubugou CCRD and determine the causes of the dam crest cracks. A novel real-coded genetic algorithm based upon the differences in gene fragments (DGFX) is proposed. It is used in combination with the radial based function neural network (RBFNN) to perform the parameters back analysis. The simulated settlements show good agreements with the monitoring data, illustrating that the back analysis is reasonable and accurate. Furthermore, the deformation gradient of the dam crest has been analysed. The dam crest has a great possibility of cracking due to the uncoordinated deformation, which agrees well with the field investigation. The deformation gradient decreases to the value lower than the critical one and reaches a stable state after the second full reservoir.

          Effects of zearalenone on the localization and expression of the growth hormone receptor gene in the uteri of post-weaning piglets

          Objective: In this study, we investigated the adverse effects of dietary zearalenone (ZEA) (0.5 to 1.5 mg/kg diet) on the localization and expression of the growth hormone receptor (GHR) in the uteri of post-weaning gilts and explored alternative mechanism of the reproductive toxicity of ZEA on piglets. Methods: A total of forty healthy piglets (Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Large White) aged 28 d were selected for study. Piglets were transferred to single cages after 10 days' adaptation on an obstetric table. The animals were allocated to one of four treatments: a normal basal diet supplemented with 0 (Control), 0.5 (ZEA0.5), 1.0 (ZEA1.0), or 1.5 (ZEA1.5) mg/kg purified ZEA, and fed for 35 d after the 10-d adaptation. Analyzed ZEA concentrations in the diets were 0, $0.52{\pm}0.07$, $1.04{\pm}0.03$, and $1.51{\pm}0.13mg/kg$, respectively. At the end of the feeding trial, piglets were euthanized after being fasted for 12 h. Two samples of uterine tissue from each pig were rapidly collected, one of which was stored at $-80^{\circ}C$ for analysis of the relative mRNA and protein expression of GHR, and the second was promptly fixed in Bouin's solution for immunohistochemical analysis. Results: The relative weight of the uteri and thickness of the myometrium and endometrium increased linearly (p<0.001) and quadratically (p<0.001) with an increasing level of ZEA. The results of immunohistochemical analysis indicated that GHR immunoreactive substance was mainly localizated in the cytoplasm of uterine smooth muscle, glandular epithelial, luminal epithelial, stromal, and vascular endothelial cells. In contrast, nuclear staining was rarely observed. The immunoreactive integrated optic density of GHR in the myometrium, luminal epithelium, glandular epithelium, and whole uteri of weaning gilts increased linearly (p<0.001) and quadratically (p<0.05) with an increasing level of ZEA. The mRNA and protein expression of GHR in the uteri of weaning gilts increased linearly (p<0.001) and quadratically (p<0.05) with an increasing level of ZEA. Conclusion: In conclusion, ZEA at a concentration of 0.5 mg/kg was sufficient to significantly thicken the myometrium and endometrium, and at a concentration of 1.0 mg/kg induced a high level of GHR expression to promote growth and development of the uteri. This revealed an alternative molecular mechanism whereby ZEA induces growth and development of the uteri and provides a theoretical basis for the revision of Chinese feed hygiene standards.

MoBlog, the Blog used in mobile phone, is a new service based on Blog, mobile phone and wiriness technology. Today mobile communication systems are designed as logically separate networks. The correspondence will be available all over the world with a mobile phone. With the rapid development of 4G, moBlog will be more popular; besides short and simple multimedia messages. Since it is so difficult to input a large quantity of words or browse lots of word contents in a mobile phone. it is more convenient for users to make use of mobile phone's own functions, such as camera and recording set, to transmit messages through multimedia methods, such as photos, audio or video ones. In the future the use of 4G mobile phone will meet people's living needs more.
