        Epidemiology, Characteristics, and Prognostic Factors of Primary Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumors in the Spinal Canal: A Systematic Review

        Primary atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) in the spinal canal are rare central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms that are challenging to diagnose and treat. To date, there has been no standard treatment regimen for these challenging malignant tumors. Thus, we conducted this research to explore potential prognostic factors and feasible treatment modalities for improving the prognosis of these tumors. Articles were retrieved from the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase databases, using the keywords “atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor,” “rhabdoid tumor,” “spine,” “spinal,” “spinal neoplasm”, and “spinal cord neoplasm.” All eligible cases demonstrated SMARCB1-deficient expression validated by pathological examination. We collected and analyzed data related to clinical presentation, radiological features, pathological characteristics, treatment modalities and prognosis via Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. Thirty-six articles comprising 58 spinal AT/RT patients were included in the study. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 18 and 22 months, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated significant survival improvements for OS in the nonmetastasis, male, radiotherapy and intrathecal chemotherapy groups as well as for PFS in the chemotherapy and radiotherapy groups. Multivariate analysis revealed that chemotherapy and radiotherapy were prognostic factors for improved PFS, and that intrathecal chemotherapy reduced the risk of mortality. Spinal AT/RTs are uncommon malignant entities with a dismal survival rate. Although our review is limited by variability between cases, there is some evidence revealing potential risk factors and the importance of systematic chemotherapy, intrathecal chemotherapy and radiotherapy in spinal AT/RT treatment modalities.

        miR-143 inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis of mammary epithelial cells in dairy goat

        MicroRNAs are a class of post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression in multicellular organisms, which play important roles in cell fate, organ morphogenesis and carcinogenesis. In the present study, we demonstrated the critical roles of miR-143 on mammary epithelial cells of dairy goat. The test results of cell count, methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide, Hoechst33342/PI (propidium iodide) and flow cytometry showed miR-143-induced G0/G1 phase arrest, inhibited proliferation and promoted apoptosis of mammary epithelial cells; the qRT-PCR test of marker genes related to cell proliferation and apoptosis, BAX and BCL-2, supported the same conclusions. Our study presents evidence that miR-143 is an important post-transcription regulator involving in mammary cells survival, and it may have a value function in mammary gland development, lactation or involution.

        A Numerical Approach for Lightning Impulse Flashover Voltage Prediction of Typical Air Gaps

        This paper proposes a numerical approach to predict the critical flashover voltages of air gaps under lightning impulses. For an air gap, the impulse voltage waveform features and electric field features are defined to characterize its energy storage status before the initiation of breakdown. These features are taken as the input parameters of the predictive model established by support vector machine (SVM). Given an applied voltage range, the golden section search method is used to compute the prediction results efficiently. This method was applied to predict the critical flashover voltages of rod-rod, rod-plane and sphere-plane gaps over a wide range of gap lengths and impulse voltage waveshapes. The predicted results coincide well with the experimental data, with the same trends and acceptable errors. The mean absolute percentage errors of 6 groups of test samples are within 4.6%, which demonstrates the validity and accuracy of the predictive model. This method provides an effectual way to obtain the critical flashover voltage and might be helpful to estimate the safe clearances of air gaps for insulation design.

        Secured Green Communication Scheme for Interference Alignment Based Networks

        In this paper, a new security and green communicationscheme is proposed to the interference-alignment (IA) based networks. To achieve a secured communication, full-duplex receiversare utilized to transmit artificial noise (AN). Both the signals andthe ANs are used to harvest energy to realize green communication. For these reasons, the feasible conditions of this scheme areanalyzed first. Secondly, the average transmission rate, the secrecyperformance and the harvested energy are investigated. Thirdly,an optimization scheme of simultaneous wireless information andpower transfer (SWIPT) is given to optimize the information transmissionand the energy harvesting efficiency. Meanwhile, an improvedIA iteration algorithm is designed to eliminate both the ANand the interference. Furthermore, relay cooperation is consideredand its system performance is analyzed. The simulations show thatthe target average transmission rate is not affected by AN, whilethe secrecy performance can be greatly improved. The energy harvestingefficiency is also better than the traditional schemes. Asexpected, the average transmission rate further is improved withthe relay cooperation.

        GOVERNING CHINESE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS: THE PROMISE AND LIMITS OF THE “THIRD WAY”

        Using the lens of board governance, this study examines the capacity of Chinese nonprofit organizations as an alternative to the market and the state in addressing societal problems. Based on case studies of two community-based organizations, we find that in both the advocacy-oriented and service-oriented organizations, the board focuses on fundraising and program development. Yet this seemingly similar focus results from different environmental conditions: facing unfavorable institutional and resource environments, the board of the advocacy organization is pressured to take a more proactive and rigorous role for the sake of survival. In contrast, the board of the service organization, with significant support from the government, is committed to expanding the organization. Our findings thus raise concerns about whether Chinese nonprofit organizations are an effective “third way” to address public problems.

        Numerical Analysis of Nonlinear Dynamic Structural Behaviour of Ice-loaded Side-shell Structures

        This investigation examines how the nonlinear structural response of a ship side-shell structure that impacts with ice is affected by the layout/design of the structure, ice characteristics and ship speed operational conditions. The finite element (FE) method was used for nonlinear analysis and comparison of a reference side-shell structure with a topology-optimized structure. Nonlinear dynamic FE collision simulations were carried out, using the reference side-shell structure, to study how the impact with ice (having different values of damping coefficients), and the variation in ship speed operational conditions, affected the damage caused to the side-shell. In addition, the results from the comparison of the topology-optimized and reference side-shell structures showed slightly larger stresses locally in the former structure. It was concluded that it was possible to reduce the weight of the reference side-shell structure and that the objective function and optimization require more detailed investigation. The FE analyses with various damping coefficients of ice showed that, for the chosen values of the damping coefficients, there was only small influence on the dynamic nonlinear response of the reference side-shell structure. Finally, a limit value for the maximum allowed velocity in the normal direction towards a level ice belt of the reference side-shell structure was calculated to result in an elastic structural response of the side-shell. For a side-shell structure movement in the direction along a level ice, the influence of velocity on structural response was negligible due to low friction between the side-shell structure and the ice in the contact.         Preparation of Modified Nano-SiO₂ Oil Dispersion System and the Stability of Its O/W Emulsion

        Nano-SiO₂ was organically modified with silane coupling agent-KH570 to prepare the modified Nano-SiO2 oil dispersion system. By increasing the dosage of KH570, the ζ-potential (absolute value) and the char yield values decreased gradually. When KH570 was 5%, the maximum contact angle with water reached 79.8°. Then, the modified Nano-SiO₂ was composed with petroleum sulfonate (PS) and its ability of reducing the O/W interfacial tension was measured. The results showed that, O/W interfacial tension reduced to about 5.86×10<SUP>-3</SUP> mN/m when the Nano-SiO₂ and petroleum sulfonate composite was mixed with the mass fraction of 0.2:0.3%. The emulsion stability coefficient was 2.15 after 120 min which was the minimum. It indicated that this compounded system had the best emulsifying ability because Nano-SiO₂ particles were dragged onto the O/W interface by the PS molecules to improve the intensity of O/W interface.

        Ethanol Production by In situ Xylose Isomerization Using Recombinant Escherichia coli and Fermentation Using Conventional Saccharomyces cerevisiae

        Xylose isomerase from Geobacillus kaustophilus HTA426 was functionally expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) and the recombinant E. coli cells were used together with conventional Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce ethanol from xylose by simultaneous xylose isomerisation and fermentation. When recombinant E. coli cells were used as the source of xylose isomerase, a significant amount of ethanol was produced from xylose,whereas the control without recombinant E. coli cells did not produce any detectable amount of ethanol from xylose. Ethanol production was increased by 38% by feeding more recombinant E. coli at 48 h compared to adding recombinant E. coli only in the beginning, resulting in more ethanol production than P. stipitis CBS6054 under the same conditions. The xylitol accumulation by the in situ process was only 57% of that produced by the P. stipitis CBS6054.
