Teachers' Self-Images in Multicultural Classrooms: Who am I?

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study, conducted in southern Virginia, United States, was to understand six teachers' own images through the experiences teaching preschoolers from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Semistructured interviews were conducted with six teachers from two day care and development centers. Observations of classroom teaching added vital information to the data collected through interviews. Other tools for data collection included field notes and a researcher's reflective journal. Strategies for examining the data in this study were thematic and constant comparative analysis. Five major themes of teachers' self-images emerged from their reflection on the roles in multicultural classrooms were: ( 1) Teachers are advocators for promoting social justice, (2) Teachers are learners of cultural diversity, (3) Teachers are transformers through caring, (4) Teachers are supporters for children's emotional and social needs, and (5) Teachers are facilitators of social reciprocity. The findings also suggested recommendations for future research and practice in the field of early childhood education.
Creep Properties of a Nickel-Based Single Crystal Superalloy with Low Density

A novel nickel-based single crystal superalloy with low density had been designed and the creep deformation mechanismsof the experiment alloy under two conditions (1050 °C/200 MPa and 1100 °C/137 MPa) had been systematically discussed. The topological inversion had been observed after fracture under the above two conditions. The effects of temperature andstress on creep life of the experiment alloy had been found no significant difference under the two conditions. It was indicatedthat the small decrease in temperature exerted limited influence on the creep behaviors of single crystal superalloys in therange of high temperature.

We cloned venom serine proteases from two bumblebee species, Bombus hypocrita sapporoensis and B. ardens ardens. We compared the predicted mature protein sequences of these serine proteasegenes to those previously reported from other bees. Using B. h. sapporoensis venom serine protease(Bs-VSP), we identify that Bs-VSP acts as a fibrin(ogen)olytic enzyme. Bs-VSP activates prothrombin and directly degrades fibrinogen into fibrin degradation products, as demonstrated for B. ignitus and B. terrestrisvenom serine proteases. Our results further define roles for bumblebee venom serine proteases as fibrin(ogen)olytic enzyme, providing strong evidence that bumblebee venom serine proteases are hemostatically active proteins that are potentially promising therapeutic agents.

An active ingredient with hyaluronidase (HAse) inhibitory effect is one of the anti-aging approaches in cosmeceuticals. Here, red sea cucumbers (RSCs), Stichopus japonicus, from Jeju Island were evaluated to examine their HAse inhibitory and antioxidant activity effect. In this study, RSCs were extracted by six enzymatic hydrolysis (Alcalase; Al, Trypsin; Try, Neutrase; Neu, Pepsin; Pep, Alpha-chymotrypsin; Chy and Protamex; Pro). Alcalase hydrolysate (AlH) showed the highest antioxidant capacities for both of oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) methods, compared to those of other hydrolysates, at 66.59±0.78 μM TE/mg and 135.78±3.24 μM TE/㎎, respectively. Furthermore, AlH performed the highest capacity of HAse inhibitory with IC<SUB>50</SUB> value of 3.21 ㎎/ml. Thus, RSCs hydrolyzed by Al were chosen to determine the cellular antioxidant activity and hyaluronic acid (HA) production effect on Human immortalized keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT). The results showed that AlH improved the cell viabilities and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by 2,2’-Azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) were significantly decreased. In addition, AlH increased HA amount by regulating HYAL2 and HAS2 expressions in the HaCaT cells. Taken together, AlH of RSCs collected from Jeju Island showed HAse inhibitory and antioxidant activities against skin-aging which shows its potentials can be an optional natural bioactive ingredient for novel cosmeceuticals.

Bee venom has been used for treating various diseases for a long time. However, the bioactive constituents of bee venom and its mechanisms remain poorly understood. In the present study, phospholipase A2 (Bt-PLA2) cDNA was cloned, and a mature form of Bt-PLA2 was purified from bumblebee venom (Bombus terrestris). The differentiation induction and apoptosis induction activities of Bt-PLA2 on chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) K562 cells were also evaluated. Bt-PLA2 cDNA has 540 nucleotides that encode a 180-amino-acid protein. The purified, mature form of Bt-PLA2 was an 18-kDa protein, and it inhibited K562 cell growth, determined by an IC50 value of 29.5 ng/μl. Moreover, Bt-PLA2 induced erythroid differentiation of K562 cells in a dose-dependent manner, and this was supplemented with the upregulation of glycophorin A (GPA) mRNA expression. Bt-PLA2- induced apoptosis, analyzed by DAPI staining, was correlated with the result analyzed by AnnexinV-FITC/PI binding. Furthermore, activation of caspase 3 and poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) and inhibition of p-Akt, determined by western blot, further demonstrated that Bt-PLA2 induced apoptosis mainly through the Akt pathway. The parallel induction of erythroblasts differentiation of K562 cells and apoptosis due to Bt-PLA2 treatment demonstrated the potential use of Bt-PLA2 as an anti-leukemia drug lead.
IMC-based Design for Teleoperation Systems with Time Delays

The presence of time delays in communication introduces a limitation to the stability of bilateral teleoperation systems. In this study, we address the design of Internal Model Control (IMC)-based controllers for teleoperation systems with arbitrary time delays. The two degrees of freedom IMC structure is utilized for the master and the slave respectively and thus the passivity-assumption on the external forces is not required. The stability of the overall system is analyzed by regarding the whole system as a multivariable system. A performance-oriented controller design process which guarantees the delayed tracking between the master and the slave is also given. Finally, an example is given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
