유채의 개화습성을 용당품종을 공시하여 분석한 결과를 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 1. 개체당 총개화수는 1,400~l,500개이었고 개화는 4월13일에 시작하였으며, 개체당 개화소요 일수는 30일이었다. 2. 개체당 협수는 560~630게 정도이었고 개체당 1차 분지는 18~20개이었다. 3. 협을 형성하는데 평균 5일이 소요되있고 분지의 부위에 따른 개화속도는 차이가 없었다. 4. 분지별 개화기간은 상부분지로 갈수록 0.45일씩 단축되었고 분지부위가 상위로 갈수록 협수는 1개 정도씩 감소했다. 5. 유분함량은 하부와 상부분지에서 높고 중부분지에서는 유의하게 낮았다. To know the characteristics of flowering in rape, flower numbers, flowering speed, flowering period, pod numbers, pod formation period, and oil content were examined by individual plant and by each of branches per plant. The results are; 1) plant had in average 1, 400 to 1, 500 flowers, 2) completion of flowering per plant took 30 days, 3) pod numbers per plant was ranged from 560 to 630, 4) plant had 18 to 20 primary branches, 5) five days were needed for pod formation, 6) no difference in flowering speed by the position of branches, 7) flowering period was shortened by 0.5 days per branch by going to upper part, 8) oil content of seeds was significantly higher on the upper and lower part than on the middle part branches.

In order to investigate varietal competition effects on yield of rice, two experiments were conducted under paddy field condition. In experiment I, two leading varieties were grown in pure and mixed stands and examined the influence of spacings and nitrogen levels on the varietal competition effects and competitive ability of two varieties. In experiment II, three leading varieties were grown in pure and mixed stands with different combinations and examined the competition effects on yield in different combinations. The results are summarized as follows: 1. No significant differences were found in grain yield between varietal mixture and pure stands, though the level of nitrogen and spacings affected plot yield. 2. In the mixture of Suwon #82 and Shin #2, Suwon #82 appeared to be a better competitor to the Shin #2 in terms of grain yield. 3. The performance of mixtures were determined by the balance of the increment of better competitor and the decrement of poorer competitor. Here, the increment of Suwon #82 due to competition did not much exceeded the decrement of Shin #2. 4. Spacings and Nitrogen levels, tested here, did not affect significantly to the varietal competition effects. 5. Jaekun, Paltal and Norin #6 showed no varietal difference in competing ability. 혼식의 효과와 그 원인을 검토하기 위하여 재식밀도, 시비량 및 혼식조합을 달리하여 실험을 하였던 바 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 혼식구의 수량은 재식밀도, 시비량 및 혼식조합에 따라 다소 차이는 있었으나 현저하지 못하였다. 2. 재식밀도, 시비량에 관계없이 수원 8002가 신002보다 경합능력이 높았다. 3. 혼식의 효과는 경합으로 인한 수량구성요소들간의 증감의 차와 경합능력의 차로 인한 혼식된 품종의 증가량과 감소량의 차로 표현되었다. 4. 혼식을 논의할 때 검토되어야 할 몇가지 점을 지적하였다.

As callus was subcultured on higher salt medium in stepweise manner, both fresh and dry wet. were increased, and Na⁺ uptake was continuously increased while K⁺ uptake decreased accordingly. H⁺ -pumping activity and glucose-6-p dehydrogenase activity were elevated in salt-adapted callus cells compared with the control.

Proline, Na, K and Ca ion contents in the callus cells cultured on the medium with and without NaCl were analyzed to determine reliable selection marker for salt-tolerance evaluation and later in quantitative genetic analysis of salt-tolerance. Even though there was no statistically significant varietal difference in proline content of the callus grown on salt-free medium, proline accumulation ability of the callus was significantly different under salt-stress while the cation contents in the callus grown both on the media with and without NaCl was significantly different. The rank of proline content in the 10 different varietal callus cultured on salt-free medium was highly coincided with the rank of proline accumulation under saline stress but three was no such relationship in case of the cation contents. Larger variability in proline accumulation even under NaCl-stress could provide easier identfication of the salt-tolerant callus. The range of variation in the cation contents was much narrowed under saline condition. Thus measure of proline accumulation in callus may be the most reliable selection criterion for salt-tolerance evaluation.

This study was carried out to find out the proper enzyme mix for protoplast isolation, and the effects of PEG, pH and Ca ion on the fusion. Mix of 2% cellulase R10 with 0.5% macerozyme R10 and 2.5% cellulase with 0.75% macerozyme were proper for isolation of protoplasts from mesophyll tissues of potato and egg plant, respectively. Fusion frequency was higher in each of 35% PEG(MW 6000), 15 mM Ca ion and at pH 5.5, however, their combined effect was not greater than as it was expected.

This study was conducted to select breeding lines resistant to Phytophthora blight by using five varietal diallel crosses. B-67 and IS 103 lines proved as moderate resistant to sesame blight showed relatively lower percentage of diseased plants than susceptible varieties in seedling test. Significant general combining ability for reducing disease development was observed in B-67 and IS 103 and its degree was gerater in B-67 than in IS 103 line. Magnitude of dominant gene effect was greater than additive gene effect and many dominant genes were involved for resistance. More than 800 plants wer selected as resistant in the F₂ generation derived from Ansan/B-67, B-67/Danbaek, B-67/IS 103 and B-67/Yusung crosses.

Proline content in the F₂ seed-derived callus grown on salt medium was analyzed to know the mode of segregation and genetic analysis in the F₂ generations. Linkage analysis implied that at least six linkage groups were involved in proline accumulation related to salt-tolerance. The segregation of proline accumulation in the progeny of Gihobyo/Annapurna F₂ generation was bimodal. The well-fitted segregation ratio of 15:1(low:high) indicated that two genes were involved and they were complementary. Proline content in the progeny of Annapurna/Nagdongbyo F₂ generation showed normal distribution, which suggested many genes might be concerned in this cross combination.

This experiment was carried out to know the effects of medium strength and spermidine on cell growth, essential oil production and its composition in Mentha piperita cell suspension cultures. The results indicated that half strength of modified Lin-Staba medium(potassium phosphate 170㎎/ℓ, sucrose 20g/ℓ, ratio of ammonium nitrogen to nitrate=1 : 3) was the most effective on cell growth and oil production. But menthol content was higher in full strength of modified Lin-Staba medium. Concentration of 10㎎/ℓ spermidine showed positive effect on both cell growth and essential oil production. Menthol and menthone content were increased more than two times compared with the control when 10㎎/ℓ spermidine was added.

Development of soybean cultivars with great nodulation and high nitrogen fixation activity, derived mostly from mutagenesis, may decrease inputs of chemical fertilizer nitrogen into the soil-plant system. Soybean seeds (cv. Jangyupkong, Hwanggeumkong, and Geomjungkong 1) were treated with three different levels of EMS (ethyl methanesulfonate) concentration(30, 50, and 70mM). Increasing the doses of EMS resulted in decreased field emergence rate of seeds, whereas it did not increase M$_2$ mutation frequencies. This indicated that the most efficient concentration of EMS was 30mM for generating mutants. Extensive mutagenesis of Sinpaldalkong 2 with 30mM EMS was undertaken to isolate soybean mutants with greater nodulation. Approximately 8, 200 M$_2$ families were screened for greater nodulation on 5 mM nitrate after inoculation with Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain YCK213-KFCC-10728. Mutant SS-2 nodulated more than the wild type. Comparison of supernodulation between SS-2 and two nts mutants(nts 1007 and nts 1116) revealed that SS-2 showed the supernodulation character at an earlier growth stage than the two nts mutants. Further studies should be needed to characterize the difference in timing of nodulation between SS-2 and nts mutants.
