The Use of Subject Pronouns in Korean Business Correspondence
Yeonkwon Jung(정연권) 담화·인지언어학회 2001 담화와 인지 Vol.8 No.2
The current study aims to explicate the frequency and the function of subject pronouns naturally occurring in Korean business correspondence. A corpus of Korean business correspondence is comprised of e-mail messages and formal business letters. Major attention is paid to the notions of you-attitude, I-attitude, and we-attitude from the particular reference to the theory of face. In conclusion, the tendency to avoid using subject pronouns prevails over my data.
A Review of Brown and Levinson's (1987) Politeness Theory
Yeonkwon Jung(정연권) 담화·인지언어학회 2003 담화와 인지 Vol.10 No.1
This paper reviews Brown and Levinson's (1987, henceforth B&L) politeness theory based on the corpus of Korean business correspondence. Two terms 'solidarity enforcement strategy' and 'conflict avoidance strategy' (instead of 'positive politeness strategy' and 'negative politeness strategy') are used in order to make the fundamental proposition of B&L's model (i.e. the approach-avoidance distinction) well balanced. This study also focuses on the overlap between positive and negative politeness. A new concept of 'ambivalent politeness' is proposed to explain the idea of making solidarity and avoiding conflict by using the same strategy (off-record).
