Gadolinium oxysulfide (GOS) is regarded as a novel scintillator for the realization of ultra-high spatial resolution in neutron imaging. Monte Carlo simulations of GOS scintillator show that the capability of its spatial resolution is towards the micron level. Through the time-of-flight method, the light output of a GOS scintillator was measured to be 217 photons per captured neutron, ~100 times lower than that of a ZnS/LiF:Ag scintillator. A detector prototype has been developed to evaluate the imaging solution with the GOS scintillator by neutron beam tests. The measured spatial resolution is ~36 ㎛ (28 line pairs/mm) at the modulation transfer function (MTF) of 10%, mainly limited by the low experimental collimation ratio of the beamline. The weak light output of the GOS scintillator requires an enormous increase in the neutron flux to reduce the exposure time for practical applications.

A novel ceramic Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) has been developed to meet the demand of high counting rate for the neutron detection which is an alternative to 3He-based detector at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). An experiment was performed to measure the neutron transmittance of ceramic-GEM and FR4-GEM at the small angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument. The result showed the ceramic-GEM has higher transmittance and less self-scattering especially for cold neutrons. One single ceramic GEM could give a gain of 102-104 in the mixture gas of Ar and CO2 (90%:10%) and its energy resolution was about 27.7% by using 55Fe X ray of 5.9 keV. A prototype has been developed in order to investigate the performances of the ceramic GEM-based neutron detector. Several neutron beam tests, including detection efficiency, spatial resolution, two-dimensional imaging, and wavelength spectrum, were carried out at CSNS and China Mianyang Research Reactor (CMRR). The results show that the ceramic GEM-based neutron detector is a good candidate to measure the high intensity neutrons.

In this study, a antioxidant activity peptide fraction was separated and purified from metabolites of whey protein fermented by Lactobacillus rhamnosus B2-1. The fermentation sample was separated by macroporous resin D101 and Sephadex G-15. The collected fractions were tested for antioxidant and antitumor activities. In order to test the antioxidant activity of fractions, Hydroxyl (·OH), 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid (ABTS), and Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) were used. The final purified peptide B11 showed highest ABTS and ·OH radical scavenging rate by 84.36±1.89% and 62.43±2.64%, respectively, and had an ORAC activity of 1,726.44± 2.76 μM Trolox equivalent/g. Further, the inhibitory effect of B11 on the proliferation of LoVo human colon cancer cells, KB and Cal-27 human oral cancer cells were enhanced with increasing concentrations of B11. B11 contains 51.421% amino acids, with Glu and Asp being the major constituents. In this study, we obtained peptide fraction B11 with antioxidant activity, which is promising for development.

The objective of this study was to clarify the relationship between the effect and associated mechanisms of lithium chloride on neural stem cells (NSCs) and the Wnt signaling pathway. The expression of key molecules proteins related to the Wnt signaling pathway in the proliferation and differentiation of control NSCs and lithium chloride-treated NSCs was detected by Western blot analysis. Flow cytometry analysis was applied to study the cell cycle dynamics of control NSCs and NSCs treated with lithium chloride. The therapeutic concentrations of lithium chloride stimulated NSC proliferation. β-catenin expression gradually decreased, while Gsk-3β expression gradually increased (P < 0.01). Furthermore, NSCs treated with lithium chloride showed significantly enhanced β-catenin expression and inhibited Gsk-3β expression in a dosedependent manner. NSCs in the G0/G1-phases were activated with an increased therapeutic concentration of lithium chloride, while NSCs in the S-phase, as well as G2/M-phases, were arrested (P < 0.01). These data confirm that the proliferation of NSCs is remarkably promoted through changes of cell dynamics after treatment with lithium chloride. Our results provide insight into the effects of lithium chloride in promoting the proliferation abilities of NSCs in vitro and preventing the cells from differentiating, which is potentially mediated by activation of the Wnt signaling pathway.
