Fog water samples were collected at Chunchon, Korea, by using active fog sampler during foggy period in fall of 1996 and 1997. The average annual foggy days at Chunchon increased from 37 days, for the years 1963~1973, to 63 days, for the year 1974~1993 that followed the construction of Lake Soyang. Volume weighted mean pH of fog water was 5.5 with a range of 4.8 to 7.0 in 1996, and 5.0 with a range of 4.1 to 6.6 in 1997. These pH values were higher than those of rain water sampled in corresponding years. However the concentration of ionic species in fog water were 26 times higher than those of rain water. The major anions in fog water were in order of SO₄^(2-), NO₃^(-) and Cl^(-) , and their average concentrations were 1770.6 μeq/㎖, 346.2 μeq/㎖, 216 μeq/㎖ in1996, and 901.8 μeq/㎖, 269.6 μeq/㎖, 141.0 μeq/㎖ in 1997, respectively. The major cations were Ca^(2+), NH₄, Mg^(2+) and K^(+), and their average concentrations were 408.5 μeq/㎖ in 1997, respectively. The fraction acidity of fog water was 0.006 and that of rain water was 0.2, which means fog water was much more neutralized than rain water.

The rain water samples were collected at Chunchon and Seoul by using wet only automatic sampler from January 1996 through December 1997. The daily base rain water samples collected over than 95% rainy events during the whole period. The samples were measured both pH and conductivity, and were analysed major ionic components, SO₄^(2-), NO₃^(-), Cl^(-), NH₄^(+), Ca^(2+), Na^(+) and K ^(+), by ion chromatography. In 1996, about 77% sampled rain water showed below pH 5.6 and the 60% of rain water was lower than pH 5.0. The volume weighted average pH was 4.7 at all sites. In 1997, the volume weighted average pH was 4.6 and 4.9 at Seoul and Chunchon, respectively. Among the rain water samples, 87% and 55% of samples showed below than pH 5.6 and 5.0, respectively. The pH value of Chunchon was significantly (p<0.05) lower than Seoul at the rain samples for less than 20 ㎜ rainfall. However conductivity of the rain samples were 20.9 μS/㎝ for 1996 and 27.7 μS/㎝ for 1997 at Seoul, and 19.1 μS/㎝ for 1996 and 14.1 μS/㎝ for 1997 at Chunchon. H₂SO₄AND HNO₃CONTRIBUTED 65.9% and 29.6% of free acidity at Seoul, respectively. The ratio of [NO₃^(-)]/[nss-SO₄^(2-)] were 0.43 at Seoul and 0.51 at Chunchon for rain samples for less than 20 ㎜ rainfall. The annual wet deposition of Cl^(-), NO₃^(-), SO₄^(2-), H^(+), Na^(+), NH₄^(+), K ^(+), Mg^(2+) and Ca^(2+), respectively, 568.8 ㎏/㎢, 1489.3 ㎏/㎢, 3184.8 ㎏/㎢, 20.9 ㎏/㎢, 249.4 ㎏/㎢, 1091.2 ㎏/㎢, 189.8 ㎏/㎢, 90.2 ㎏/㎢, and 702.4 ㎏/㎢ at Seoul for 1996; 656.4 ㎏/㎢, 2029.7 ㎏/㎢, 3280.7 ㎏/㎢,27.2 ㎏/㎢, 229.4 ㎏/㎢, 1063.9 ㎏/㎢, 106.9 ㎏/㎢, 7802 ㎏/㎢, and 645.3 ㎏/㎢, at Seoul for 1997; 116.9 ㎏/㎢, 983.3 ㎏/㎢, 1797.0 ㎏/㎢, 21.4 ㎏/㎢, 83.2 ㎏/㎢, 648.1 ㎏/㎢, 78.0 ㎏/㎢, 22.2 ㎏/㎢ and 368.8 ㎏/㎢ at Chunchon for 1996; 100.2 ㎏/㎢, 1077.6 ㎏/㎢, 1754.0 ㎏/㎢, 13.4 ㎏/㎢, 146.0 ㎏/㎢, 602.3 ㎏/㎢, 88.8 ㎏/㎢, 16.2 ㎏/㎢ and 206.8 ㎏/㎢ at Chunchon for 1997.

<p>Self-labeled magneto nanoprobes (SLMNs) were synthesized for one-step labeling of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) <I>via</I> non-invasive magnetic resonance (MR) image tracking. The surface of superparamagnetic nanocrystals (SMNCs) were enveloped by tri-aminated polysorbate 80 (TP80) not only for enhancement of the affinity for hMSCs, but also to achieve increased colloidal stability in the aqueous phase by the nanoemulsion method. Double-ligand modulation for engineering magnetic nanoclusters

<P>Magnetic nanoclusters (MNCs) are agglomerated individual magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) that show great promise in increasing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sensitivity. Here, we report an effective strategy to engineer MNCs based on double-ligand modulation to enhance MRI sensitivity. The oleic acid-coated individual MNPs self-assembled and then were enveloped by polysorbate 80, using a nanoemulsion method to prepare MNCs. By modulating the amounts of the two ligands, and thus the size and magnetic content of the resultant MNCs, we were able to enormously improve MRI sensitivity.</P>

Background: Massive hemoptysis is one of the major medical emergency with high risk of mortality. Though the best predictor of mortality associated with hemoptysis appears to be the amount of bleeding within the first 24 hours, catastrophic hemorrhage could be occurred to the patients who were apparently in a stable condition with scanty hemoptysis at the time of admission. We evaluated APACHE III score system to find if it could be a prognostic index that can predict the mortality of the patients with hemoptysis. Methods : We identified all the patients who had admitted with hemoptysis in the Medical Intensive Care Unit of Asan Medical Center between May 25, 1989, and July 31, 1995. A retrospective analysis was done in 66 patients with hemoptysis on APA- CHE III score. Results: The overall mortality rate was 17.4% (12/69). In univariate analysis of possible prognostic factors, independent predictors of mortality were age(P=0.016), amount of hemoptysis(P=0.012), AaDO2 (P=0.017), requirement of transfusion(P=0.036), mechanical ventilatory care(P<0.05) and APACHE III score(P=0.02), In multivariate analysis with sex, age, amount of hemoptysis, AaDO2, requirement of transfusion and APACHE III score, APACHE III score was the only independent predictor of mortality(P=0.015, odd ratio=19.3, 95% confidence interval, 3.4 to 249.7) Conclusion: APACHE IU score may be a clinically significantly important independent predictor of outcome in the patients with hemoptysis. In addition, invasive procedure, such as bronchial artery embolizaticn or operation, could be considered in advance in the patients with more than 30 points of APACHE III.

임파관 평활근종증은 폐, 종격동, 복부 임파계의 평활근의 비전형적인 증식을 특징으로 하는 드문 질환으로, 주로 가임기 여성에서 발견된다. 저자들은 운동시 호흡곤란을 주소로 내원한 52세 폐경기 여성에서 개흉 폐 생검을 통해 폐 임파관 평활근종증 1례를 경험하였기에 관련 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis is a rare disorder characterized by proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the tissues of the lung and lymphatic vessels of the abdomen. The symptoms of LAM are logically explaines by the extent and location of the smooth muscle proliferation. This rare disorder causes serious respiratory impairment and survival is generally less than 10 years. It generally presents during the child hearing years, and this, together with exacerbation with menses and during pregnancy, has suggested some degree of hormonal influence. We experienced a case of pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis in a post menopausal wowan who had suffered from exertional dyspnea, so we report it with a brief review of the literature.
