The Acupuncture Therapeutic Approach in Temporal Arteritis Vasculitis: A Case Report

Yılmaz Sezgin 사단법인약침학회 2018 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.11 No.3

Temporal arteritis is a form of vasculitis that involves the large- and medium-diameterarteries and leads to progressive headache. Symptoms may be accompanied by vision disorder, subfebrile temperature, fatigue, lack of appetite, weight loss, sweating, and jointpains. While cortisone therapy reduces the symptoms, its effects in terms of improvingquality of life are limited. We opted to benefit from the effects of acupuncture to reducesymptoms and increase quality of life in a case of temporal arteritis, a chronic disease. A75-year-old woman presented with pain on both sides of the head. The pain occurred inthe form of agonizing attacks 2e3 times a week. Accompanying neck pain was present, together with continuous lethargy and fatigue. Physical examination revealed decreasedcutaneous elasticity and muscle mass, and a depressive mood state was present. The patientwas first administered six sessions of acupuncture therapy directed toward themigraine etiology. When no response was achieved, we investigated temporal and parietalregion points associated with headache in the literature. Points GB1,8,18, ST8, SI19,and BL8 were added to the treatment. The pain attacks and their frequency decreasedfollowing acupuncture therapy. In conclusion, while cortisone is the first preference inthe treatment of temporal arteritis, we think that acupuncture aimed at the cause ofaccompanying symptoms can also be useful.

Experimental and factorial study on gas separation properties of PLA-based green composite membranes

Yılmaz Sedef Yüksel,Özen Hülya Aykaç,Geyikçi Feza 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.12

Polylactide acid (PLA) is a biocompatible sustainable material with notable characteristics due to its good mechanical properties and low environmental impact. The present study investigated the effects of PLA-based green membranes on gas separation and identified the best factor condition for the membrane. Prepared membranes were tested to determine oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gas permeability properties. Oxygen gas permeability of the PLA/PEG/HA membrane obtained by drying for two days was increased from 100 kPa to 400 kPa; the permeability value of this membrane increased by 15%. On the other hand, the oxygen permeability value of the membrane prepared by dry for three days under the same pressure conditions and ambient temperature increased by 5%. This result indicates that the permeabilities of prepared membranes for O2 gas increase with increasing feed pressures. On the other hand, it was observed that the CO2 permeability decreased by 38.83% with the increase in pressure and drying time due to the plasticizing and swelling effect of carbon dioxide on the membrane. A factorial design was also constructed from experimental data and applied to determine the interactions of experimental parameters. All of the parameter interactions were of statistical significance for permeability. It is further argued that molecular weight has a significant positive effect on permeability, while dry time and pressure have just a slight negative effect. This study could contribute to further studies by reducing the number of tests necessary to understand the characteristics and gas separation performance of green materials.

On the Gauss Map of Tubular Surfaces in Pseudo Galilean 3-Space

Yılmaz Tuncer,Murat Kemal Karacan,Dae Won Yoon 경북대학교 자연과학대학 수학과 2022 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.62 No.3

        In this study, we define tubular surfaces in Pseudo Galilean 3-space as type-1 or type-2. Using the X(s, t) position vectors of the surfaces and G(s, t) Gaussian trans formations, we obtain equations for the two types of tubular surfaces that satisfy the conditions ∆X(s, t) = 0, ∆X(s, t) = AX(s, t), ∆X(s, t) = λX(s, t), ∆X(s, t) = ∆G(s, t), ∆G(s, t) = 0, ∆G(s, t) = AG(s, t) and ∆G(s, t) = λG(s, t).

A New Clinical Tool for Scoliosis Risk Analysis: Scoliosis Tele-Screening Test

        Yılmaz Hurriyet Gursel,Büyükaslan Ahsen,Kuşvuran Aslihan,Turan Zeynep,Tuna Filiz,Tunc Hande,Özdoğan Sibel 대한척추외과학회 2023 Asian Spine Journal Vol.17 No.4

Study Design: Methodological, observational clinical study.Purpose: This study aimed to develop a virtual screening test to detect scoliosis risk initially by parents without the need for medical visit during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.Overview of Literature: The scoliosis screening program has been implemented to early detect scoliosis. Unfortunately, access to health professionals was limited during the pandemic. However, during this time, interest in telemedicine has increased remarkably. Recently, mobile applications related to postural analysis were developed, but none permits evaluation by parents. Methods: Researchers developed the Scoliosis Tele-Screening Test (STS-Test), which included drawing-based images of body asymmetries, to assess the scoliosis-associated risk factors. The STS-Test was shared on social networks, allowing the parents to evaluate their children. After test completion, the risk score was generated automatically, and children with medium and high risks were then advised for medical consultation for further evaluation. The test accuracy and consistency between the clinician and parents were also analyzed. Results: Of the 865 tested children, 358 (41.4%) consulted clinicians to confirm their STS-Test results. Scoliosis was then confirmed in 91 children (25.4%). The parents were able to detect asymmetry in 50% of the lumbar/thoracolumbar curvatures and 82% of the thoracic curvatures. In addition, the forward bend test revealed favorable agreement between parents and clinicians (<i>r</i> =0.809, <i>p</i><0.0005). Internal consistency of the esthetic deformities domain in the STS-Test was also excellent (α=0.901). This tool was 94.97% accurate, 83.51% sensitive, and 98.87% specific. Conclusions: The STS-Test is a new parent-friendly, virtual, cost-effective, result-oriented, and reliable tool for scoliosis screening. It allows parents to actively participate in the early detection of scoliosis by screening their children for the risk of scoliosis periodically without the need to visit the health institution.

Acupuncture Treatment of a Metatarsus Proximal End Fracture: A Case Report

        Yılmaz Sezgin,Sinan Becel,Fatih Akçay 사단법인약침학회 2016 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.9 No.6

A tuberosity fracture is an avulsion fracture in an area 1.5 cm proximal to the fifth metatarsus. Six to eight weeks of immobilization may be required. A patient with a short leg plaster splint came to our clinic because of pain. The patient had a diagnosis of a fifth metatarsus fracture. Significant edema, fluctuation on the dorsolateral section of the left foot, and red color changes (0.2- to 0.3-cm diameter) on the skin of the anterolateral tibial area of the affected leg were noted. The locations of these skin changes corresponded to the GB34 (Yanglingguan) and the ST37 (Shanqiuxu) acupoints. The patient was successfully treated with acupuncture at these and several other acupoints. After 3 weeks (i.e., eight sessions), the patient returned to her routine life without any pain. This interesting case of metatarsus proximal end fracture shows that some acupoints may be visible during the progress of the disease. We used these acupoints in acupuncture treatment. Pain and edema were rapidly relieved, which may be attributable to the recovery of the lymphatic system in the affected area via acupuncture treatment.

In vitro comparison of the cyclic fatigue resistance of HyFlex EDM, One G, and ProGlider nickel titanium glide path instruments in single and double curvature canals

        Koray Yılmaz,Gülşah Uslu,Taha Özyürek 대한치과보존학회 2017 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.42 No.4

Objectives: It was aimed to compare the cyclic fatigue resistances of ProGlider (PG), One G (OG), and HyFlex EDM (HEDM) nickel titanium glide path files in single- and double-curved artificial canals. Materials and Methods: 40 PG (16/0.02), 40 OG (14/0.03), and 40 HEDM (10/0.05) single-file glide path files were used in the present study. Sixty files were subjected to cyclic fatigue test by using double-curved canals and 60 files by using single-curved canal (n = 20). The number of cycles to fracture (NCF) was calculated and the length of the fractured fragment (FL) was determined by a digital micro-caliper. Twelve pieces of fractured files were examined with scanning electron microscope to determine fracture types of the files (n = 2). The NCF and the FL data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test using SPSS 21 software (p < 0.05). Results: In all of the groups, NCF values were significantly lower in double-curved canals when compared to single-curved canals (p < 0.05). For both of single- and double-curved canals, NCF values of HEDM group in apical and coronal curvatures were found to be significantly higher than NCF values of PG and OG groups (p < 0.05). In both of single- and double-curved canals, NCF value of PG group was found significantly higher than OG group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, HEDM glide path files were found to have the highest cyclic fatigue resistance in both of single- and double-curved canals.

Application of Achillea millefolium as a Natural Antibacterial Agent in Finishing of Textile

Fazlıhan Yılmaz 한국섬유공학회 2023 Fibers and polymers Vol.24 No.9

Hygienic products are very popular nowadays. Especially when consumers turn to textile products, they also consider the comfort features of the products. Among the comfort features, the fact that the products are antibacterial is the reason for preference. In this study, it was tried to give the antibacterial properties to woolen fabrics with the help of Achillea millefolium plant. This antibacterial feature will be achieved by dyeing woolen fabrics with the help of this plant. The Achillea millefolium plant was subjected to the extraction process before the dyeing experiments were started. In dyeing processes, the liquor ratio was adjusted as 1:40 and dyeing experiments were carried out with and without mordant. After dyeing experiments, dyed fabric samples were washed and dried at room temperature, it was made ready for various analyzes. Among these analyses, color measurement (CIE L*a*b* C* ho (international commission on illumination) and K/S (color efficiency)), antibacterial effect tests and FTIR (fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy) analyses were performed. In addition, washing and rubbing fastness tests of dyed wool fabrics were carried out and SEM (scanning electron microscopy) images were also taken. ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) analysis of the herbal source was also performed. As a result of the study, it was determined that woolen fabrics can be dyed with Achillea millefolium plant and these dyed fabrics have antibacterial activity against 2 different bacteria species (Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213) vs Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922)). Especially in the dyeing experiment without using mordant, a very high value of 99.99% was achieved against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
