In this work, the characterization of adsorption of Cu, Zn and Cd on granular activated carbon in water has been studied. The factors that affect adsorption in boundary between activated carbon and wastewater are concentration, temperature, contact time, pH and so on. As the result of this study, the maximum adsorption amount of Cu occurred near pH 7, while that of Zn and Cd was near pH 9.6 and 10, respectively. As contact time and temperature are transformed, such factors as optimum contact time and temperature are taken into consideration in an adsorptive process of heavy metal because an adsorption and a reducing process occur. In isotherm of Freundlich, 1/n values of Cu, Cd capacity were between 0.16 and 0.5.

The objective of this study was to characterise the pattern of p53 mutations in bladder turmor. In this study, 25 bladder transitional cell carcinomas were analyed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for p53 nuclear overexpression, and the results were compared with those of polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis in exon 5-8 of the p53 gene and DNA sequencing analysis. 15 out of 20 cases (75%) showed p53 nuclear immunoreactivities on IHC. On PCR-SSCP analysis, 10 out of 25 cases(40%) had abnormal shifts on mobility. 62% of the mutations were in exon 8. Direct DNA sequencing analysis were performed in these 10 cases to confirm the presence of mutated p53 genes and to determine the type of mutations. Sixteen point mutations were detected in 10 cases. Tow specimens had double mutations and another two had triple mutations. G:C→A:T transitions were the most frequent patterns (62.5%). One mutation was a premature stop codon and two were silent mutations. There out of 10 had a point mutation at codon 285 (GAG/Glu→AAG/Lys) and two had at codon 280(GAG/Glu→AAG/Lys). One of 16 mutations was transition at hot spot codon 273 with CpG site. These results suggest that altered expressions and point mutations of p53 occured in all grade of bladder cancer, but are more associated with hight grade bladder tumors. To elucidate the carcinogenesis of bladder cancer, further studies should be carried out.

Ro 5-3350 is a benzodiazepine derivative, which has shown muscle relaxant, sedative and anti-convulsant effects in animal experiments. This study was done to investigate its suitability for use in anesthesiology. The patients were selected at random and divided into three groups. The first. group was given 10 mgs of the drug intramuscularly one hour prior the proposed. surgery. The second group was given additional 10 mgs of the-drug intramuscularly on the evening before the operation. The third group was given diazepamnn and treated similarly, i. e., 10 mgs of diazepam was given intramuscularly twice as the second group. The pre-operative psychic sates, the circulatory, respiratory and muscle relaxation during the surgery and the post-operative recovery status was analyzed statistically by applying the x' test. The conclusions can be summarized as follows: 1) The patients could sleep soundly with Ro 5-3350 on the night preceding the. surgery but there was no statistical difference between Ro 5-3350 and diazepam with equivalent doses in sleep inducing action. 2) *Sedative effect of single injection of the drug was equivalent with double injection of diazepam. Sedative effect was enhanced with the doubt doses of Ro 5-3350. 3) During the surgery, respiration and circulation was not affected by the drug. The difference between Ro 5-3350 and diazepam in potentiating muscle relaxation, during the surgery was not significant. 4) The difference between the drug and diazepam group in post-operative-recovery was highly- significant. Ro 5--3350 sedated the patients better and -exerted analgesic effect significantly. Vomiting and appetite was aggreviated with diazepam, especially after penthrane anesthesia compared with halothane -anesthesia. Ante- and retrograde amnesia was observed in several cases. 5) Application to anesthesia for cardioversion was found improper, because the -drug caused prolonged sleep and air-way obstruction due to muscle relaxation after the procedure. 6) Hiccough and hallucination was observed in small number of the cases. For pre-medication, single dose of Ro 5-3350 prior to the surgery was recommended and additional dose given at the night before surgery was poorly tolerated by the patients. Post-operative use to alleviate pain was found to be effective.

N/A Thirty-three cases of diabetic ketoacidosis, experienced in Seoul Red Cross Hospital from Jan. 1, 1981 to Dec. 31, 1988, were analyzed retrospectively. The following results were obtained: 1) The incidence was 1.83Zo of total diabetic admissions. 2) The mean age of the patients was 40.5 years old, the peak outbreak was in the third decade, and the male-to-female ratio was 1:2.3. 3) The mean diabetic period of patients was 3.5 years. 4) The most frequent precipitating factor was infection, pneumonia being peredominant, 5) The average amount of fluid and electrolyte ad- ministered within the first 24 hours was 4.7L of water and 42 mEq of K. The average dose of insulin administered within 24 hours was 122.7 units. 6) Fom cases expired and the mortality rate was 12.1%, Factors contributing to death were dehydration, pulmonary edema, and brain edema. 7) On discharge, we recomened KPH insulin in 19 cases, oral hypoglycemic agent in 19 cases, and exercise and diet control in seven cases.

This study evaluated the ability of Diffusion-Weight Image (DWI), which is one of pulse sequences used in MRI based on the T2 weighted images, to detect samples placed within phanto㎳ according to their size. Two identically sized phantoms, which could be inserted into the breast coil bilaterally, were prepared. Five samples with different sizes were placed in the phantoms, and the T2 weighted images and DWI were obtained. The Breast 2 channel coil of SIEMENS MAGNETOM Avanto 1.5 Tesla equipment was used for the experiments. 2D T2 weighted images were obtained using the following parameters: TR/TE = 6700/74 ㎳ec, Thickness/gap = 5/1 ㎜, Inversion Time (TI) = 130 ㎳, and matrix = 224 × 448. The parameters of DWI were that TR/TE = 8100/90 ㎳ec, Thickness/gap = 5/1 ㎜, matrix = 128 × 128, Inversion Time = 185 ㎳, and b-value = 0, 100, 300, 600, 1000 s/㎜. The ratio of the sample volume on DWI compared to the T2 weighted images, which show excellent ability to detect lesions on MR images, was presented as the mean b-value. The measured b-value of the samples was obtained: 0.5 × 0.5 ㎝ = 0.33/0.34 square × ㎝ (103%), 1 × 1 ㎝ = 1.28/1.25 square × ㎝ (102.4%), 1.5 × 1.5 ㎝ = 2.28/2.67 square x ㎝ (85.39%), 2 × 2 ㎝ = 3.56/4.08 square x ㎝ (87.25%), and 2.5 × 2.5 ㎝ = 7.53/8.77 square × ㎝ (85.86%). In conclusion, the detection ability by the size of a sample was measured to be over 85% compared to T2 weighted image, but the detection ability of DWI was relatively lower than that of T2 weighted image.
Analysis on Difference Between X-ray Field and Light Field

X-ray and light field play an important role in investigate the objective area accurately for X-ray photography. If there is a difference of field, it is not able to take an accurate X-rayon the objective area and it influence on exposure dose of a patient and image quality greatly. X-ray and light field synchronize when FFD (Focus Film Distance) of a mirror within Collimator and mirror-lamp distance is same. Targeting hospitals in Gwangju Metropolitan City, it was investigated the coincidence of field in condition of 50~60 kVp, 5mAs in distance of SID 100 cm using Collimator test plate and Beam Alignment test tool. A tolerance of KS standard is within ±2% of SID currently, about 78.6% was suitable for the tolerance in this experiment and it`s good result comparing to KS standard however, it was only one hospital for ± 0.5% of SID 100 cm which is 7.1 %. In experiment of centerline 85.7% was 1.5°& below and 64.3% was 0.5° below.

This paper describes the cut off time and the current characteristics of virgin RCDs and deteriorated ones in the seashore. The RCDs(Residual Current Protective Devices) are used for protecting the human body from electrical shock and for preventing facility accidents. According to the Korean standards, the RCDs are installed in panel boards. When RCDs are installed outside, they must be enclosed inside waterproof cases. In the case that RCDs are employed at temporary power sites and electrical facilities on the road, they are exposed to the of external environment. As a result the RCDs deteriorated in the seashore for 3 months showed high failure rate, while the virgin RCDs all complied with Korean Standard Considering that the RCDs are used under exposed condition outside, the reliance of RCDs must be ensured by modifying the related regulations and codes and by developing improved models advanced in their performance.
새로운 Benzodiazepine 수면제를 쓴 경구적 전투약의 임상경험

A new benzodiazepine derivative(Ro 5-4200) was used as a hypnotic in a. pilot study on 34 patients, having to undergo surgery. To 10 cases, a tablet of 2 mg of -the drug was given orally the night before the operation. and another 2 mg was .given again 1 hour prior to the surgery on the operative day. Rest of 24 cases, "2mg was given only on the operative day. Anesthesia was performed with _penthrane or halothane. The morning before and the day after the surgery, the patient was questioned.as to the effect of the tablet and the response was eevaluated according to the prepared questionaires. 1) It was found that with 2mg of the drug about 70 percent of patients became asleep between 20 minutes and 45 minutes and 30 percent were not asleep after one hour. 2) Patients were awoke during transportation from the ward to the operating theatre. More than 50 per cent of the patients were found sleepy or dizzy before surgery. 3) When patients fell asleep, air way tended to be obstructed because of muscle .relaxation. No complication was observed for that, but the patient should be attended by a nurse. Hallucination was observed in one case and hiccough was also observed. 4) Recovery from anesthesia was prolonged more than one hour 'compared to the patients having no Ro 5-4200. Total sleeping time was judged to be 4 to 6 hours by adding the time of anesthesia, recovery and premedication.
Inhibition of interleukin-12 production in lipopolysaccharide-activated macrophages by curcumin

Pharmacological control of interleukin-12 production may be a key therapeutic strategy for modulating immunological diseases dominated by type-1 cytokine responses. In this study we investigated the effects of curcumin (1,7-bis[4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl]-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) on the production of interleukin-12 from mouse macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. Curcumin potently inhibited the production of interleukin-12 in a dose-dependent manner. The effect of curcumin on interleukin-12 p40 promoter activation was analyzed by transfecting RAW264.7 monocytic cells with p40 promoter/reporter constructs. The repressive effect mapped to a region in the p40 promoter containing a binding site for nuclear factor κB (p40-κB). Futhermore, activation of macrophages by lipopolysaccharide resulted in markedly enhanced binding activity to the κB site, which significantly upon addition of curcumin. These results suggest that curcumin-induced inhibition of interleukin-12 production in macrophages may explain some of the biological effects of curcumin including its anti-inflammatory activity.
