A Study on Translationeses in English-Korean Translation
Gilja Byun,Wonbo Kim 한국언어연구학회 2014 언어학연구 Vol.19 No.3
Byun, Gilja & Kim, Wonbo. 2014. A Study on Translationeses in English Korean-Translation. Journal of Linguistic Studies 19(3), 149-180. This study analyzes translationeses in English-Korean translation on the basis of target text oriented readibility, which means how natural readers feel whey they read translated texts in disregard of source text. Sixteen categories on the five levels were used to classify translationeses found in 44 English-Korean translation assignments about two English texts. As a result of analyzing translationeses, four interesting facts were found. Firstly, students made more translationeses in certain categories such as plural, redundant word and postposition. Secondly, the two texts showed similar translationese distribution except loanwords and numerals influenced by ST. Thirdly, students did not make progress in translation for five weeks. Fouthly, sentences in TTs were longer than those in STs, which makes it difficult to understand TTs. (Macquarie University․Jeju National University)
Transfer Time, Energy, and Quota-Aware Multi-RAT Operation Scheme in Smartphone
Wonbo Lee,Jonghoe Koo,Yongseok Park,Sunghyun Choi IEEE 2016 IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology VT Vol.65 No.1
<P>Today's smartphones integrate multiple radio access technologies (multi-RAT), e.g., third-generation (3G), fourth-generation (4G), Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, whereas the number of integrated RATs is increasing. Therefore, it is becoming more important to select the best RAT set among the available RATs and determine how much data to transfer via each selected RAT network. We propose a multi-RAT interface activation algorithm with supporting system design for smartphones' file transfer service (e.g., downloading a movie file). We model a multiattribute cost function incorporating file-transfer completion time, energy consumption, and data usage quota together. The goal of this paper is to find out the optimal multi-RAT set to be activated with the corresponding file segment allocation that minimizes the cost function under given energy and quota constraints. By the proposed algorithm, the suboptimal solution can be found without significant performance degradation from the optimal solution while making the computational complexity linear in the number of RATs.</P>
Impact of 3D NAND Current Variation on Inference Accuracy for In-memory Computing
Wonbo Shim 대한전자공학회 2022 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.22 No.5
3D NAND Flash has been proposed and investigated as a memory device candidate for the energy-efficient and ultra-high density compute-in-memory system. To achieve the acceptable accuracy for the inference applications, 3D NAND string current must be controlled precisely. However, there exist many challenging points which bothers the precise current control such as retention, temperature, pattern dependency in the cells of the 3D NAND string. In this work, we investigated the causes and effects of the 3D NAND string current variation and the resulted inference accuracy drop. The current variation drops the accuracy significantly so that the compensating design schemes must be implemented for the practical designs.
What is the Difference between Bilinguals and Interpreters?
Wonbo Kim 한국언어연구학회 2021 언어학연구 Vol.26 No.2
This paper attempts to demonstrate that interpreting is a specialized field that requires domainspecific expertise. and thus being bilingual only is insufficient to perform interpreting successfully. This paper also presents different interpreting modes for which domain-specific interpreting knowledge and skills are necessary to achieve successful interpreting outcomes. This suggests that it may be difficult to expect untrained bilinguals to perform interpreting accurately even with bilingual proficiency. Moreover, through empirical studies this paper compared interpreting performance quality of interpreters with that of untrained bilinguals and provided evidence that untrained bilinguals were not competent enough to perform a good interpreting task on account of lack of interpreting-specific skills. Thus, the distinction between interpreters and bilinguals is called for, and what differentiates interpreters from bilinguals---note-taking and working memory skills, linguistic and extralinguistic abilities, and code of conduct---results from training tailored only for interpreting.
