Concepts and Design Aspects of Granular Models of Type-1 and Type-2

In this study, we pursue a new direction for system modeling by introducing the concept of granular models, which produce results in the form of information granules (such as intervals, fuzzy sets, and rough sets). We present a rationale and several key motivating arguments behind the use of granular models and discuss their underlying design processes. The development of the granular model includes optimal allocation of information granularity through optimizing the criteria of coverage and specificity. The emergence and construction of granular models of type-2 and type-n (in general) is discussed. It is shown that achieving a suitable coverage-specificity tradeoff (compromise) is essential for developing granular models.
Development of lumped-parameter mathematical models for a vehicle localized impact

In this paper, we propose a method of modeling for vehicle crash systems based on viscous and elastic properties of the materials. This paper covers an influence of different arrangement of spring and damper on the models’ response. Differences in simulating vehicle-torigid barrier collision and vehicle-to-pole collision are explained. Comparison of the models obtained from wideband (unfiltered) acceleration and filtered acceleration is done. At the end we propose a model which is suitable for localized collisions simulation.

Knowledge representation realized by information granules is one of the essential facets of granular computing and an area of intensive research. Fuzzy clustering and clustering are general vehicles to realize formation of information granules. Granulation ? degranulation paradigm is one of the schemes determining and quantifying functionality and knowledge representation capabilities of information granules. In this study, we augment this paradigm by forming and optimizing a collection of associations among original and transformed information granules. We discuss several transformation schemes and analyze their properties. A series of numeric experiments is provided using which we quantify the improvement of the degranulation mechanisms offered by the optimized transformation of information granules.

Staphylococcus aureus에 의한 유방염은 주로 만성으로 경과되며 항생제 치료에 대한 저항성을 나타낸다. 기존의 보고에 의하면, 이 질병은 동일항원 혹은 다른 종류의 항원에 대한 면역반응의 억제와 관련된다고 알려져 있으나, 이러한 효과와 관련된 특이적인 인자는 아직 밝혀지지 않고 있다. 본 실험은 superantigen으로 알려진 포도상구균 장독소가 유방염의 숙주방어기전에 간섭하리라는 가능성을 제시하였다. 본 실험에서 포도상구균 장독소 C형 (SEC)은 in vitro상에서 세포증식의 억제와 CD8⁺T 림프구 표면의 ACT3 marker의 과다 발현에 의해 특징지어지는 소 T 림프구의 일탈된 활성을 유도하였다. SEC에 의한 소 T 림프구의 증식반응은 일시적이었으며, 배양 4일 후에는 ACT1, ACT16 및 IL-2Rα 등 활성세포 표면인자의 증가와 연관되어 왕성한 증식을 나타내었다. 비록 CD4⁺T 림프구와 CD8⁺T림프구는 배양 후 4일과 7일 사이에 증식을 나타내었지만, 상대적으로 CD8⁺T 림프구 아집단의 증식이 더 왕성하였으며 이로 인해 CD4:CD8 비율이 반전되는 결과를 가져왔다.
Drag reduction in flow: Review of applications, mechanism and prediction

Drag reduction (DR) agents are used at very low concentrations to accelerate significantly the flow in oil pipeline conduits, oil well operations, flood water disposal, fire fighting, field irrigation, transport of suspensions and slurries, sewer systems, water heating and cooling systems, airplane tank filling, marine systems, and biomedical systems including blood flow. DR agents are typically high molecular mass polymers; this review discusses a mechanism explaining how DR occurs using such agents. All pertinent experimental findings are challenged with that mechanism and all are shown to support it. In industrial applications DR agents undergo mechanical degradation in turbulent flow. An equation predicting the degradation as a function of time is presented and successfully confronted with experimental data. Experimental methods of determination of DR are outlined. Finally a connection between DR and flocculation is discussed.

Healthy ruminants carry intestinal Shiga toxin (Stx)- producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Stx has antiviral activities in vitro and STEC numbers correlate with reduced early viremia in sheep experimentally infected with bovine leukemia virus (BLV). This study assessed the impact of intestinal STEC on BLV-induced disease for one year post-BLV-challenge. High STEC scores (CFU/g feces × frequency of STEC-positive samples) correlated with good health, whereas poor weight gain, distress, and tumor development occurred only among animals with low STEC scores. STEC carriage was associated with increased percentages of B cells in peripheral blood.
