        Selection and optimization of nutritional risk screening tools for esophageal cancer patients in China

        BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition has multiple impacts on surgical success, postoperative complications, duration of hospital stay, and costs, particularly for cancer patients. There are various nutrition risk screening tools available for clinical use. Herein, we aim to determine the most appropriate nutritional risk screening system for esophageal cancer (EC) patients in China. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In total, 138 EC patients were enrolled in this study and evaluated by experienced nurses using three different nutritional screening tools, the Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 tool (NRS2002), the Patient-generated Subjective Globe Assessment (PG-SGA), and the Nutrition Risk Index (NRI).We compared sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratios, and Youden index generated by each of the three screening tools. Finally, cut-off points for all three tools were re-defined to optimize and validate the best nutritional risk screening tool for assessing EC patients. RESULTS: Our data suggested that all three screening tools were 100% sensitive for EC patients, while the specificities were 44.4%, 2.96%, and 59.26% for NRS 2002, PG-SGA, and NRI, respectively. NRI had a higher positive likelihood ratio as well as a higher area under the receiver operating characteristic curve compared to those of NRS 2002 and PG-SGA; although, all three tools had null negative likelihood ratios. After adjusting the cut-off points, the specificity and accuracy for all tools were significantly improved, however, the NRI remained the most appropriate nutritional risk screening system for EC patients. CONCLUSIONS: The NRI is the most suitable (highest sensitivity and accuracy) nutritional risk screening tool for EC patients. The performance of the NRI can be significantly improved if the cut-off point is modified according to the results obtained using MedCalc software.

        Fabrication and characterization of silicon nanostructures based on metal-assisted chemical etching

        We present a facile method to fabricate one-dimensional Si nanostructures based on Ag-induced selective etching of silicon wafers. To obtain evenly distributed Si nanowires (SiNWs), the fabrication parameters have been optimized. As a result, a maximum of average growth rate of 0.15 μm/min could be reached. Then, the fabricated samples were characterized by water contact angle (CA) experiments. As expected, the as-etched silicon samples exhibited a contact angle in the range of 132o-136.5o, whereas a higher contact angle (145o) could be obtained by chemical modification of the SiNWs with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). Additionally, Raman spectra experiments have been carried out on as-prepared nanostructures, showing a typical decreasing from 520.9 cm−1 to 512.4 cm−1 and an asymmetric broadening, which might be associated with the phonon quantum confinement effect of Si nanostructures.

        Strength, deformation and failure behavior of bolted rock-like specimen with multiple cracks under uniaxial compression by particle flow simulation

        Most of the rock mass in nature contains a large number of joints, faults and other defects, which make the rock mass have the characteristics of discontinuity and anisotropy, and easily lead to instability and failure of rock engineering. A great quantity of engineering practices show that the bolt has a significant supporting effect on jointed rock mass. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the deformation and failure characteristics of jointed rock mass and the crack arrest effect of bolt for the safety and stability of engineering. A reasonable numerical model of bolted rock samples with non-persistent joints is established by using a three-dimensional Particle Flow Code (PFC) based on the laboratory rock specimens, and the uniaxial compression numerical test is carried out. The results indicate that (1) the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the laboratory test results, and the variation trend of strength is basically consistent; (2) the different joint angles and anchorage angles result in variations in the mechanical properties of bolted specimens with non-persistent joints; (3) the joint angle has a significant effect on the failure mode of the specimen; (4) the existence of bolts can effectively limit the initiation and propagation process of micro-cracks, and greatly improve the mechanical properties of the specimen containing non-persistent joints.

        Biomass-Based Synthesis of Green and Biodegradable Molecularly Imprinted Membranes for Selective Recognition and Separation of Tetracycline

        Aggravating environmental problems have driven the unprecedented development of sustainable materials. Treatments of environmental pollutants with biomass-based sustainable materials are catching attention of more researchers. In the present work, a biomass-based strategy was developed to prepare sustainable molecularly imprinted nanocomposite membranes (S-MINMs). Based on this strategy, biomass-activated carbon nanoparticles (ACNPs) as the porous filler were integrated into the porous cellulose acetate (CA)/chitosan (CS) hybrid membranes to synthesize renewable and easy degradable basal membranes. The specific recognition sites were fabricated from simple free radical polymerization method, and using methacrylic acid (MAA) and acrylamide (Am) as functional monomers, we obtain improved adsorption capacity on tetracycline (TC, template molecule). Performance of S-MINMs was evaluated by adsorption isotherm, adsorption kinetics, perm-selectivity, reusability and biodegradability. Results indicated that the as-prepared S-MINMs not only exhibited desirable biodegradability, but also possess superior adsorption and separation performance toward TC (15.99 mg g -1 for adsorption capacity and 4.91 for perms-selectivity factor). The method developed here shows great potential for development of sustainable membranes for selective separation of various pollutants.

        On the Performance of the Block-Based Selective OFDM Decode-and-Forward Relaying Scheme for 4G Mobile Communication Systems

        In this paper, we propose a block-based selective orthogonal frequency divisionmultiplexing (OFDM) decode-and-forward relaying scheme for 4G mobile communication systems. In the scheme, an OFDM symbol is divided into blocks and one relay is selected for each block. Theoretical outage performance and error performance are analyzed and evaluated. A unified outage expression is given for our scheme and the other two schemes and the lower bound of the bit error rate of the three schemes is also obtained. The effect of the coherence bandwidth on the proposed scheme is also investigated. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to validate our analysis. The scheme can obtain a good tradeoff between complexity and performance and can be used in future 4G mobile communication systems.

        A New Closed-loop Control Allocation Method with Application to Direct Force Control

        A new closed-loop control allocation method is proposed to distribute the force and moment increment commands among multiple actuators at the same time. An innovative feedback configuration for the force and moment increment produced by the actuators deflections is added into the trajectory and attitude control loop, respectively. In addition, the trajectory and attitude controllers designed by nonlinear dynamic inversion are used to derive the desired force and moment increment commands. Then, the stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed theoretically when the actuators are healthy and fail, where there is no a fault detection method to identify the failure. Finally, the proposed method is used to achieve direct force control for decoupling the attitude and flight trajectory in the longitudinal flight. The nonlinear simulation using Canard Rotor/Wing (CRW) aircraft longitudinal model in fixed-wing mode demonstrates that this method can achieve two direct force control modes: pitch pointing and direct lift, whether the actuators are healthy or fail.

      • Translation Strategy of Sports Movie Titles

        Purpose: Sports movies are the films featuring stories about sports persons and activities. This type of movies have won great attention and popularity among all movies because of the uplifting spirits of passion and perseverance exemplified by the sports in the movies, as well as their satisfaction of human`s desires of self-transcendence and dream-fulfillment. Therefore, sports movies have been a hot topic since its first advent 100 years ago. As a special field of translation, movie titles translation into Chinese can convey a movie`s major messages to the audience which is a great help to facilitate audience`s understanding of the film. Methods: Literature review Expert interview Case study Logic analysis Results: 1. Sports movie titles translation is subject to the influence of the factors of box office and anesthetics. It can directly impact the movie makers in whether the filming investment can be rewarded to finance further more sports movies or not. The sports spirits demonstrated through the movies are usually positively inspiring and unyielding, and the protagonists` success is achieved through step-by-step hard work to become sports stars or champions. Audience can be both informed of the stories and inspired by the sports spirits through the translation of the movie titles. 2. There are three approaches in sports movie titles translation, i.e., literal translation, liberal translation and amplification translation. 3. There are some problems in the translation of sports movie titles, such as the practice of word-for-word translation of the original English titles failing to make a good combination with the movie`s plots and subject. Conclusion: Sports movie is an art of combining audio and visual faculties, their titles translation has direct influence to the audience`s understanding of the movies` subject. It is not only an art form but also a bridge between China and other countries in cultural exchanges and an important medium of cultural input and output. Translators should make intensive study and insightful analysis of the sports movies` story and subject and strive to realize both sports movies business value and educational functions by adept use of various translation methods and techniques. Meanwhile, translators should also learn western cultures and understand the cultural differences to work out a perfect translation by achieving a balance of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance".

        Rules Placement with Delay Guarantee in Combined SDN Forwarding Element

        Recent studies have shown that the flow table size of hardware SDN switch cannot match the number of concurrent flows. Combined SDN Forwarding Element (CFE), which comprises several software switches and a hardware switch, becomes an alternative approach to tackle this problem. Due to the limited capacity of software switch, the way to route concurrent flows in CFE can largely affect the maximum delay that a flow suffers at CFE. As delay-guarantee is a nontrivial task for network providers with the increasing number of delay-sensitive applications, we propose an analytical model of CFE to evaluate a rules placement solution first. Next, we formulate the problem of Rules Placement with delay guarantee in CFE (RPCFE), and present the genetic-based rules placement (GARP) algorithm to solve the RPCFE problem. Further, we validate the analytical model of CFE through simulations in NS-3 and compare the performance of GARP with three benchmark algorithms.
