This dissertation argues that Holocaust-related art is best understood not as a product of limits arising from ethical concerns about Holocaust representation, but instead within a contemporary art context. It explores the epistemological approach common to much Holocaust-related and "mainstream" contemporary art, and it investigates how neither Holocaust scholars nor art world professionals generally acknowledge the commonality. To demonstrate commonality, this dissertation engages Theodor W. Adorno's philosophy's primary concern, the subversion of positivist identity thinking. (Indeed, such subversion can be understood as a central concern of recent Holocaust-related and mainstream art.) Identity thinking defines the other with reductive terms (i.e. valuable/valueless), and Adorno recognizes its pervasive presence in society, most notoriously in Nazi death camps. Through the conceptual approach and literary style of his philosophy as exemplified by "The Essay as Form," Adorno presents an alternative model of thinking which combines the exactitude of research with the freedom of imagination. This dissertation argues that many Holocaust-related and mainstream artworks since the mid-1970s may be regarded as Adornian essays. Chapter 1 examines the marginalization of Holocaust-related art by Holocaust scholars because of beliefs about ethical exclusivity. Chapter 2 tentatively accepts this exclusivity by introducing Adorno's largely Holocaust-inspired model. Chapter 3 analyzes two pioneering Adornian essayistic artworks, Claude Lanzmann's Shoah and Art Spiegelman's Maus, while Chapter 4 considers later Holocaust-related works by Judy Chicago, Melissa Gould and Aharon Gluska from Adornian and feminist perspectives. With models from art world theorists Hal Foster, Fredric Jameson and others, Chapter 5 offers a survey of contemporary art that accommodates Holocaust representation. Then, toward explaining the marginalization of Holocaust-related art by art world professionals, Chapter 6 examines an apparent art world discomfort with public displays of Jewish ethnicity. Representing the attitudes of two mutually exclusive communities, Chapters 1 and 6 bracket the study, while material between them aims to demonstrate how each community conceptually approaches the other. The Conclusion regards a danger of the essayistic approach, the tendency to sacralize its material, and considers how, since the early 1990s, a new strategy of abjection in both Holocaust-related and "mainstream" art avoids that risk.

The women who participated in Zurich Dada are extraordinary in the history of avant-garde cabaret performance. Not only did they take on the traditionally male roles of the poet/performer and creative artist, but they succeeded in setting forth their own political and artistic agendas alongside their male Dada compatriots. Through their poetry readings and dance performances at the Cabaret Voltaire and Galerie Dada, they deconstructed stereotypical images of the ideal female performer. Presenting themselves on stage in ways that defied audience expectations of feminine appearance and behavior, the women of Zurich Dada created performances marked by disharmony and a sense of the grotesque. In many cases, they disguised and distorted their bodies through oversized, “cubist” masks and costumes. Such subversions of conventional gender expectations in performance were analogous to the attacks on language, representational art and positivistic rational thought in general carried out by Hugo Ball, Richard Huelsenbeck, Tristan Tzara and Jean Arp. The female Dadas were not the first women to take on creative roles, in propria persona, in the avant-garde cabaret. The German poets Margarete Beutler and Dolorosa are examples of women who presented their own poems and challenged feminine stereotypes in the cabaret prior to World War I and the rise of Dada. However, the women of Zurich Dada; namely the poet Emmy Hennings, artist and dancer Sophie Taeuber, dancer Katja Wulff and the dancer and musician Suzanne Perrottet, subverted traditional images of femininity through the presentation of their bodies on stage that were often radical and bizarre. Each woman found in the galleries and stages of Dada an arena for self-expression, a platform for their political views, and the impetus to revolt against entrenched artistic traditions.

    • The congestion evil: Perceptions of traffic congestion in Boston in the 1890s and 1920s (Massachusetts)

This dissertation examines how people understood the phenomenon of traffic congestion in Boston in the 1890s and 1920s, tracking the evolution of their ideas between the two periods. Then, as today, public discussions of policies to relieve congestion were based upon ideas about such issues as what causes congestion and why it matters. To understand how congestion was perceived in these eras, I used a case study approach, looking at discussions of it during two sets of planning debates. The first case is a debate from 1891 to 1894 that led to the building of a subway in downtown Boston. The second case is a debate in the mid-1920s over plans for the so-called “loop highway,” a boulevard running through the downtown. I posed three research questions to limit and define the meaning of the term “perceptions” for this analysis: why did Bostonians think traffic congestion was a problem, what did they think caused congestion, and what policies did they think might reduce it? To answer these questions, I analyzed the words of the people involved in the debates, using materials such as newspapers, government publications, and magazines. Three themes stand out among the conclusions I drew about perceptions of congestion during the two periods. First, the factors people perceived as causing congestion were closely linked to the policies they favored. Second, most people didn't actually talk much about how they perceived congestion, even though they believed it was a problem. This relative silence reflects the fact that ideas about congestion were not particularly controversial. Third, many perceptions that Bostonians held about congestion were not only accepted as conventional wisdom within each time period, but they changed very little across the two periods—people understood congestion in the 1890s in many of the same ways that they did in the 1920s, even though traffic conditions had changed radically in the intervening years. For example, the favored policies were major capital projects; while regulatory approaches were proposed, opposition from interest groups or the public blocked the implementation of all but the most limited new rules.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects and integrity of parents as reading tutors for second grade children with fluency problems. Four parent/child pairs served as participants using a multiple baseline across subjects design. Parents tutored children using a fluency-based intervention package (i.e., Listening Passage Preview and Repeated Reading) 3 times a week for 8 weeks. Parents were provided with an initial training session, which consisted of direct instruction, practice, and feedback. To assess for direct and indirect measures of integrity, parents used an integrity checklist and audio taped each session. If procedural adherence was less than 90% accurate, parents received a phone call to provide extra support and feedback. If integrity remained below 90% accuracy after receiving the telephone call, parents were provided with a booster training session. Dependent measures included change in oral reading fluency as measured by Curriculum-Based Measurement, treatment integrity as measured by direct observations and self-report, and treatment acceptability by parents and children as measured by acceptability rating scales. All students demonstrated gains in fluency, minimal support was required in response to parents' integrity levels, and participants found the program generally acceptable.

    • Simulation and control of articulated rigid bodies

This dissertation presents algorithms for the simulation and control of articulated rigid bodies and related applications. The first algorithm is a novel approach for dynamically simulating articulated rigid bodies undergoing frequent and unpredictable contact and collision. In order to leverage existing algorithms for nonconvex bodies, multiple collisions, large contact groups, stacking, etc., maximal rather than generalized coordinates are used with an impulse based approach that allows articulation, contact and collision to be treated in a unified manner. The pre-stabilization method presented differs from post-stabilization in that allowable trajectories are computed before moving the rigid bodies to their new positions, instead of correcting them after the fact when it can be difficult to incorporate the effects of contact and collision, thus eliminating drift that can be seen in many traditional methods. This approach works with any black box method for specifying valid joint constraints, and no special considerations are required for arbitrary closed loops or branching. The implementation presented is effectively linear both in the number of bodies and in the number of auxiliary contact and collision constraints, unlike many other methods that are linear in the number of bodies but not in the number of auxiliary constraints. Articulated characters can then be controlled using a second method described in this work which exploits the fact that proportional derivative (PD) control equations can be solved analytically for a single degree of freedom. The analytic solution indicates what the PD controller would accomplish in isolation without interference from neighboring joints, gravity and external forces, outboard limbs, etc. The time integration used in this method includes an inverse dynamics formulation that automatically incorporates global feedback so that the per joint predictions are achieved. This effectively decouples stiffness from control so that the desired target position is achieved regardless of the stiffness of the joint, which merely determines when it will get there. This method is extended to include line segment actuators to control joint motion. Using these methods together allows one to develop convincing articulated characters and examples. These are presented along with applications for this work in other fields and industry.
