Using Lord of the Rings to Teach Story Structure and Improve Cultural Literacy for Undergraduate English Interpretation and Translation Students

        Vincent, Joseph 한국통번역교육학회 2013 통번역교육연구 Vol.11 No.2

This paper discusses designing a course for undergraduate English interpretation and Translation students focused on teaching the elements of story structure using elements of the novel Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and the film trilogy of the same name directed by Peter Jackson. Story structure will be taught using the theory of the monomyth by Joseph Campbell and drawing from other concepts such as archetypes and shadow as developed by Carl G. Jung and Maria von Franz. Additional relevant aspects of cultural literacy will be introduced using various materials related to the story, its creators, scholars and its context within contemporary culture. Following discussion of story structure and cultural context, course design will be considered and examples of assignments and class content will be provided including film and reading discussion questions.

      • Boronic acid-functionalized oligoamine colorimetric heparin receptor

Joseph, Vincent S.,Hong, Jong-Dal Elsevier 2018 Colloids and surfaces. A, Physicochemical and engi Vol.543 No.-

Abstract

Here we developed a synthetic colorimetric heparin receptor (denoted as OHR) bearing phenylboronic acid (PBA) and intermediary cationic ammonium groups on a geometrically flat biocompatible oligoamine framework. OHR showed remarkable affinity for heparin (at physiological conditions) with a binding constant comparable to the best such values reported previously. The high affinity of OHR for heparin was ascribed primarily to the flat molecular geometry of the receptor, which apparently allowed for effective interactions of the cationic ammonium and PBA groups of OHR with the functional groups along the bulky polymer chain of heparin. Moreover, this high affinity of OHR for heparin under physiological conditions as well as the high biocompatibility of OHR are features that make OHR a promising candidate for use in potential biomedical applications including the bedside detection of heparin levels in human blood during surgery, and the use of heparin reversal agents.

Graphical abstract

We developed a synthetic colorimetric heparin receptor OHR bearing phenylboronic acid and intermediary cationic ammonium groups on a geometrically flat biocompatible oligoamine framework. Consumer Law in the United States - FTC and Consumer Protection

        Vincent Joseph 한국비교사법학회 2008 比較私法 Vol.15 No.2

This article will provide a general overview of consumer protection law in the United States. The historical background of the key laws and statutes will be provided along with a discussion of the sources of government authority in this field of law, specifically with regard to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In addition to briefly reviewing the historical development of consumer protection law through common law theories and early statutory history, this article will provide the current standards applied by the federal government in determining unfair or deceptive acts or practices in commerce.
To understand consumer protection law in the United States today, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the laws and statutes that created the Federal Trade Commission and which the FTC is responsible for enforcing on behalf of US consumers. By understanding the background of these relevant statutes, such as the FTC Act, we can then approach the organization of the FTC and better understand the functions of it separate institutions. Specifically, the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection and its seven divisions will be discussed including the divisions of: Advertising Practices, Consumer and Business Education, Enforcement, Financial Practices, Marketing Practices, Privacy and Identity Protection, and Planning and Information.
The authority of the FTC over consumer protection law will then be examined by exploring the US constitutional sources of executive authority and lawmaking. The sometimes confusing area of US federal versus US state authority and responsibility for consumer protection will also be examined and the Preemption Clause will be discussed in connection with the US Constitution to provide a better understanding of which areas are controlled by state laws and when and why the US federal government supercedes the states in consumer protection in specific cases and the legal justification for this.
An important legal concept in US consumer protection law is that of “unfair or deceptive acts or practices.” To understand the law in this area, this article will examine the origins of this term and the role it plays in consumer protection. The definition of this term requires a standard which is set by FTC. This article will discuss the definition of this important term, the standards by which the FTC determines which acts are unfair or deceptive, and the authority of the FTC to make such determinations. Additionally, any limits on such authority will be considered.
In a more concrete sense, it is important to consider the results of consumer protection law for the consumers themselves. For this purpose, this paper discusses the legal remedies available to consumers through both state and federal law as well as common law. Here, an understanding will be provided about how and why the federal and state levels of consumer law work together to protect consumers by providing government control over commercial practices which are deemed unfair or deceptive and also by allowing citizens to sue commercial actors who are deemed to have engaged in unfair or deceptive acts or practices.
Finally, we will briefly consider the future of consumer protection in light of an ever increasingly globalized economy. In this case, the FTC in its mission to protect US consumers may need to cooperate and form agreements with similar bodies of other countries, perhaps through organizations such as the forum for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation or with the Korea Fair Trade Commission. Hopefully, approaches to consumer protection can be harmonized in order to fairly and efficiently protect consumers around the world.

Student Perceptions of the Film in an Undergraduate Advanced English Reading Course: A Case Study of the Movie The Matrix

Vincent, Joseph 영상영어교육학회 2018 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.19 No.3

This paper examines whether students perceived the effectiveness of using the film The Matrix (Wachowski & Wachowski, 1999) to promote understanding of texts in a reading comprehension course designed according to principles of blended learning. Student perception is considered relevant to blended learning course design because it can provide feedback to the teacher about whether learners consider the course material helpful in meeting course objectives. It can also indicate levels of student engagement, which is one of the priorities of a blended learning approach. The research was conducted with student surveys given in a multiple choice format along with some written responses for greater specificity both before and after watching the film. The student responses indicated that using the film in a reading course was perceived by students as helpful for them in improving their understanding of the texts and concepts, communicative fluency in class, and critical thinking about the content. The survey results of pre-viewing with 36 participants and post-viewing with 39 participants are discussed. The validity of the survey instruments is also considered supported by specific examples of both the surveys and student responses as well as examples of course materials and student written answers to examination questions based on the film.

Course Design for an English Reading Course Using the Novel Way of the Peaceful Warrior With Its Film Adaptation

Vincent. Joseph 영상영어교육학회 2016 영상영어교육 (STEM journal) Vol.17 No.2

This paper will discuss course design using the film adaptation of the novel Way of the Peaceful Warrior (Millman, 1980) in conjunction with the novel itself in a reading class designed for undergraduate students in their third or fourth year of study in English at a university in Seoul. The general purpose of the course was to help students improve their ability to communicate in English. Use of the film in this class was intended to help students to discuss cultural, philosophical, and English language concepts raised in the novel upon which the film was based. The rationale of the course and the design of the content will be discussed first. The material was presented in English via reading, film, lecture, and discussion. The teaching method was based on the idea that an emphasis should be placed on fostering a student-centered learning environment in which students can best develop their communicative proficiency in English by participating in a variety of activities including those which are self-directed, interactive, and of higher-order than passively listening to a lecture, memorizing information, and recapitulating that information in examinations. Students were asked to discuss their findings, and to advance and support arguments in spoken and written form.
