Sleeping with Beauty : Romantic Love, Sex, Power and the Construction of Femininity in Heterosexual Young Adult Relationships

Louise Vincent,Caryn McEwen Research Institute of Asian Women Sookmyung Women' 2005 Asian Women Vol.20 No.-

This article draws on solicited diary entries detailing the lives and loves of eight young undergraduate women at an elite institution of higher education in South Africa. The research participants are occupants of a privileged place in society with access to education, and a middle-class lifestyle, have control over their reproductive functioning, are not wives, mothers or homemakers, and potentially have access to fulfilling, status-rich and materially rewarding occupations which make independence both of their parental families and of male partners a real possibility. Theirs then, is a world of information, choice and opportunity and if of anyone at all in society we would predict the emergence of a critical gender consciousness, it might be of these woman. One way of gauging the extent of the emergence of a critical consciousness among women is to examine the extent to which, in the stories they tell about their intimate relationships, they depart from, or conform to both the content and structure of the traditional romance genre and in particular, to the positioning of themselves in their stories as passive, submissive, dependent subjects while their partners are dominant and active. The present article argues that far from the democratisation of intimacy, the young, seemingly privileged and empowered women in the study remain locked into romantic narratives of love with their concomitant passive construction of femininity. In a social context characterised by putative sexual emancipation, these young women find themselves in the unenviable position of having to play a game of liberated sexual and gender politics while at the same time living a reality of feminine oppression.

      • Whalers’ Shanties of Barouallie, St. Vincent: Observations on the Nature, Decline and Revival of a Unique Caribbean Maritime Tradition

2007 International Journal of Intangible Heritage Vol.2 No.-

Barrouallie, a fishing community on the Caribbean islandof St. Vincent, has a unique cultural heritage associatedwith its history as a whaling centre. As a way to alerttownspeople of a successful catch, Barrouallie whalerssang occupational songs known as ‘shanties’ while rowingtheir whaleboats to shore. A product of diverse culturalinfluences, the shanties of Barrouallie may be viewed as asub-genre, distinct from the more general body of seachanteys, the work songs of international 19th centurymerchant seamen. As a mode of expression - not merelya work song -a shanty could function variously asentertainment, satire, and advertisement. While economicand cultural changes in this developing island nation didnot favour the continuance of shanty singing, a revival ofinterest in Barrouallie’s whaling traditions began in 2001,with particular attention to shanties and the generation ofmen who recall the role and significance of these songs inthe local whaling enterprise. This 21st century renaissance of a maritime musictradition among living practitioners represents aremarkable survival that deserves greater recognition. Through the performance and recording of shanties, TheBarrouallie Whalers have been interpreting andpublicising Barrouallie’s whaling heritage for aninternational audience since 2001.

      • Locating and Utilising Inherent Qualities in an Expanded Sound Palette for Solo Flute

        Alice Bennett(알리스 베넷),Vincent Giles(빈센트 길레스) 한국전자음악협회 2015 에밀레 Vol.13 No.-

이 글은 빈센트 길레스Vincent Giles가 실시간으로 분광 영역 마이크로사운드 증폭 소프트웨어SDMAS(Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software)를 사용한 플루트 연주에 관하여 기술한다. In the search for an idiosyncratic improvisatory language of solo flute performance, it is sometimes necessary to move beyond the scope of traditional and extended techniques into the world of instrument-extension through computers. To this end, Alice Bennett’s creative work leads to the exploration of new electroacoustic techniques, searching for ways to expand the available sonic palette. This paper documents an electronically-extended flute performance utilising Vincent Giles’ Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software (SDMAS) in real-time. The SDMAS amplifies soft sounds relative to loud, by real-time input, shifting the partials by amplitude around an amplitude-based pivot point. The result is that these otherwise-inaudible partials increased to audibility alongside the higher amplitude partials, drastically altering the perceived timbre of the instrument or instruments being treated. This allows the performer/composer to not only discover, but to exploit a greater range of timbres than are available to a purely acoustic instrument. These explorations lead to a sonically enriched and idiosyncratic improvisatory language based on this hyper-instrument configuration.

      • DSMC Study on the Performance of a Supersonic Micro-Nozzle

Vol.2014 No.5

The desire to reduce the mass of the spacecraft is driving the development of low-thrust micro propulsion systems. In order to obtain insight into the physics of micro-nozzle flows, numerical simulations of rarefied flows in a micro-nozzle is investigated by using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. For micronozzle with smaller divergent angle, the effect of boundary layer thickness can be significant. A thick boundary layer present at the exit of the micronozzle can affect the choking. The choking in normal nozzles is essentially under very thin boundary layer. Whereas for micronozzles due to the presence of a thick boundary layer the possibility of compound choking exists. In order to quantify the influence of viscous forces on flow choking and nozzle performance, the boundary layer parameters are investigated in much detail and detailed comparisons with normal nozzles under favorable and adverse pressure gradients are provided. Comparisons are made with the available experimental data, and the factors, which affect the solutions, are discussed. This study revealed that in micro-nozzles surface effects play the main role on the flow structure.

      • Scheduling in the Transportation Sector, Current Trends and the Road Ahead

Vol.1 No.1

Many large transportation and logistic companies have used state of the art scheduling technologies in the past 5 years. What was considered high risk projects just S years ago in the industry, are now becoming quite common in many places and especially in South East and East Asia where transportation companies have to demonstrate continuous increase in productivity. The author would like to share with audience some of his experience with important success stories in the transportation sector in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Achieving a successful scheduling based applications is never easy, several parameters and traps will determine success or failure, while at the same time, the transportation industry is increasingly demanding such $quot;intelligent$quot; systems. We call this state the time of the $quot;quickening$quot; where the need for experienced and well trained consultant (whether from Academia or the Industry) will play a vital role.

“Chindia” or Rivalry? Rising China, Rising India, and Contending Perspectives on India-China Relations

2011 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.35 No.3

Whether and how India and China manage their futures as rising powers will critically shape international relations in the twenty-first century. These two countries demonstrate sharp contrasts in terms of their political systems, economic models, and social structures, despite their common aspirations for greater stature on the world stage. They have also maintained a very complex relationship that is weighed down by history but also offers promising opportunities in an era of globalization. While the implications for the rise of China have been widely debated, scant scholarly attention has been devoted to the rise of India or to how these two Asian great powers perceive each other’s ascendancy. This article examines the key factors influencing India-China relations, including territorial disputes, mutual threat perception and alignment patterns, and economic partnership and competition. It categorizes Indian elites’perspectives on the rise of China in three paradigms: geopolitical, geoeconomic, and geocivilizational. It ends with a discussion of the possible scenarios of future India-China relations.

Effect of Water Adulteration on the Rheology and Antibacterial Activities of Honey

(KJFHC) Vol.8 No.5

Honey was diluted with different percentages of water and was analysed rheologically at room temperature of 27°C. The rheological profiles of pure and impure honey samples were measured at low shear rates (0.01-4.16s-1). This work developed a structural kinetic model, which correlated well with the rheological data. The new model was used to categorise honey samples using their average molecular weights as one of the distinctive properties. Also, the kinetics order in the new model predicts the number of active components in the "honey" undergoing deformation. Honey produced third order kinetics to depict the monomers, oligomers and water content in honey. Pure honey exhibits peculiar non-Newtonian rheological behaviour. The behaviour of water is Newtonian. Dilution of honey with different percentages of water turns the resulting fluid Newtonian from 10% dilution with water. This study analysed the antibacterial activities of honey and serially adulterated samples against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antibacterial analyses of honey were conducted using Kirby Bauer's well diffusion method. The results indicated that pure honey exhibited a zone of inhibition against both organisms. Also, the diameter of the zone of inhibition decreased with increasing dilution of honey, suggesting a correlation with the rheological method.

Developing a Best-Evidence Pre-employment Medical Examination: An Example from the Construction Industry

2014 Safety and health at work Vol.5 No.3

The Dutch construction industry has introduced a compulsory preemployment medical examination (PEME). Best-evidence contents related to specific job demands are, however, lacking and need to begathered. After the identification of job demands and health problems in the construction industry(systematic literature search and expert meeting), specific job demands and related requirements weredefined and instruments proposed. Finally, a work ability assessment was linked to the instruments’outcomes, resulting in the modular character of the developed PE-ME. Twenty-two specific job demandsfor all Dutch construction jobs were identified, including kneeling/squatting, working under timepressure, and exposure to hazardous substances. The next step was proposing self-report questions, screening questionnaires, clinical tests, and/or performance-based tests, leading to a work ability judgment. “Lifting/carrying” is described as an example. The new modular PE-ME enables a job-specificassessment of work ability to be made for more than 100 jobs in the Dutch construction industry.

Datura metel stramonium exacerbates behavioral deficits, medial prefrontal cortex, and hippocampal neurotoxicity in mice via redox imbalance

Vincent Onoriode Igben,Wilson Josiah Iju,Omogbiya Adrian Itivere,John Chukwuma Oyem,Peter Sunday Akpulu,Efe Endurance Ahama 한국실험동물학회 2023 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.39 No.2

Background: Datura metel (DM) stramonium is a medicinal plant often abused by Nigerians due to its psychostimulatory properties. Hallucinations, confusion, agitation, aggressiveness, anxiety, and restlessness are reported amongst DM users. Earlier studies suggest that DM induces neurotoxicity and affect brain physiology. However, the exact neurological effects of DM extract in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampal morphology have not been elucidated. In this study, we evaluated the hypothesis that oral exposure to DM extract exerts a neurotoxic effect by increasing oxidative stress in the mPFC and the hippocampus and induces behavioral deficits in mice. Results: DM methanolic extract exposure significantly increased MDA and NO levels and reduced SOD, GSH, GPx and CAT activities in mice brains. In addition, our results showed that DM exposure produced cognitive deficits, anxiety, and depressive-like behaviour in mice following oral exposure for 28 days. Moreover, the mPFC and hippocampus showed neurodegenerative features, loss of dendritic and axonal arborization, a dose-dependent decrease in neuronal cell bodies’ length, width, area, and perimeter, and a dose-dependent increase in the distance between neuronal cell bodies. Conclusions: Oral exposure to DM in mice induces behavioural deficits, mPFC and hippocampal neuronal degenerations via redox imbalance in the brain of mice. These observations confirm the neurotoxicity of DM extracts and raises concerns on the safety and potential adverse effects of DM in humans.
