        Computer literacy of Turkish preservice teachers in different teacher training programs

        This paper reports on an investigation into the sophomore and senior preservice teachers' computer literacy in different teacher training programs and to determine relationship between grades and the teacher training programs in terms of their computer literacy. The study used case study research methodology, and the sample consisted of 276 preservice teachers. The 'Computer Literacy Scale' comprising 24 likert-type questions was employed. The inferential statistical tests were used to analyze obtained data for comparing groups on the scores collected in multiple subtests. The results suggest that there was no difference between sophomore and senior preservice teachers' computer literacy. For computer literacy, the order of rank is basic skills, application software skills, computer awareness and programming skills, respectively. Undergraduate programs only have developed basic skills of preservice students and have not had the impact on other skills or sophisticated computer literacy. The MANOVA inferential statistics findings proved these results. It is suggested that content of the computer literacy skills and computer course(s) should be improved and re-designed by including computer literacy skills.

      • Coping and Quality of Life in Turkish Women Living with Ovarian Cancer

        Background: This study investigated the utilization of both problem and emotion focused coping strategies and their association with aspects of quality of life among Turkish women with ovarian cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: The convenience sample consisted of 228 patients in all disease stages. The data were collected using the brief COPE, QOL-Cancer patient tool, sociodemographic sheet, and medical variables were gathered from patients' medical charts. Results: Findings reveal that quality of life is moderately high for this group of cancer patients, despite some specific negative facets of the illness and treatment experience. Acceptance, emotional support and religion were the most frequently used problem-focused coping strategies and self-distraction, venting and behavioral disengagement were the most frequently used emotion-focused coping strategies reported by patients. Overall quality of life and, particularly, psychological and spiritual well-being scores of younger patients were lower. Patients reported using significantly more problem-focused coping than emotion-focused coping, and more problem-focused and less emotion-focused coping predicted greater quality of life. Problem-focused coping was related to patients' physical and spiritual well-being and emotion-focused coping was related inversely with psychological and social well-being. Conclusions: Coping strategies are influential in patient quality of life and their psychosocial adaptation to ovarian cancer. Psycho-oncology support programs are needed to help patients to frequent use of problem-focused coping and reduce emotion-focused coping strategies to improve overall quality of life.

        Xanthan Gum Production of Xanthomonas spp. Isolated from Different Plants

        Xanthan gum were produced from the following Xanthomonas strains; standard strain Xanthomonas campestris NRRL B-1459 and isolated strains Xanthomonas arbicola pv. juglandis, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vesicatoria, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. begonia,Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. dieffenbachia. The viscosity features of the xanthan gums obtained were determined at 25-80℃ with different pH values and were compared to commercial xanthan gum. Our results indicate that X. arbicola pv. juglandis showed the highest productivity (8.22±1.52 g/L gum). This was followed by X. axonopodis pv. begonia (7.74±1.30 g/L gum), and the control bacterial strain X. campestris NRRL B-1459 (7.46±0.28 g/L gum). X. axonopodis pv. vesicatoria showed the lowest productivity (6.40±0.55 g/L gum). No xanthan gum could be obtained from X. axonopodis pv. dieffenbachia. Xanthan gum produced by X. axonopodis pv. vesicatoria showed the highest viscosity value (428 mPa·sec at 1%solution) in all Xanthomonas strains isolated from plants.

        Non-Stationary Response of a Vehicle Obtained From a Series of Stationary Responses

        Ride characteristics of a vehicle moving on a rough ground with changing travel velocity are analyzed in this paper. The solution is difficult due to the non-stationary characteristics of the problem. Hence a new technique has been proposed to overcome this difficulty. This new technique is employed in the analysis of ride characteristics of a vehicle with changing velocity in the time/frequency domain. It is found that the proposed technique gives successful results in modelling non-stationary responses in terms of a series of stationary responses.

        The Effects of Intradetrusor BoNT-A Injections on Vesicoureteral Reflux in Children With Myelodysplasia

        Purpose: We retrospectively evaluated the efficacy of botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) on vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), continence status, and urodynamic parameters in children with myelodysplasia who were not responsive to standard conservative therapy. Methods: The study included 31 children (13 boys, 18 girls) with a mean age of 9.2±2.3 years (range, 5–14 years) with myelodysplasia, retrospectively. All children were fully compatible with clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) and did not respond to the maximum tolerable anticholinergic dose. All children received an intradetrusor injection of 10 U/kg (maximum, 300 U) of BoNT-A into an infection-free bladder. All patients had VUR (22 unilateral, 9 bilateral) preoperatively. The grade of reflux was mild (grades 1, 2), intermediate (grade 3), and severe (grades 4, 5) in 25, 7, and 8 ureters, respectively. Results: The mean maximum bladder capacity increased from 152.9±76.9 mL to 243.7±103 mL (P<0.001), and the maximum detrusor pressure decreased from 57±29.4 cm H2O to 29.6±13.9 cm H2O (P<0.001). After BoNT-A treatment, 16 refluxing ureters (40%) completely resolved, 17 (42.5%) improved, 5 (12.5%) remained unchanged, and 2 (5%) became worse. Of the 31 children with urinary leakage between CICs, 22 (71%) became completely dry, 6 (19%) improved, and 3 (10%) experienced partial improvement. Conclusions: In children with myelodysplasia, we were able to increase bladder capacity, enhance continence, and prevent VUR by using intradetrusor BoNT-A injections. Although our results are promising, a larger group of long-term prospective studies are warranted to investigate this method of treatment.

        Inhibition of Heat Resistant Molds: Aspergillus fumigatus and Paecilomyces variotii by Some Plant Essential Oils

        In this study, the inhibitory properties of some essential oils including citrus (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck),laurel (Laurus nobilis L.), myrtle (Myrtus communis L.),oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), and savory (Satureja thymbra L.) were investigated against the heat resistant molds Aspergillus fumigatus and Paecilomyces variotii isolated from margarine in a previous study in order to assess the potential for using these essential oils as a natural food preservative. In this study, the essential oils of the plants were obtained by steam distillation using Clevenger apparatus and were tested for antifungal activities at 0.25,0.50, and 1.00% concentrations. Inhibitory effects of the essential oils on the growth of the fungi followed the sequence: oregano=citrus>savory>laurel>myrtle. P. variotii was more resistant against the essential oils than A. fumigatus.

        The Impact of Warmed Intravenous Contrast Material on the Bolus Geometry of Coronary CT Angiography Applications

        Objective: This study was designed to investigate the effect of administration of warmed contrast material (CM) on the bolus geometry and enhancement as depicted on coronary CT angiography. Materials and Methods: A total of 64 patients (42 men, 22 women; mean age, 56 years) were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 included 32 patients administered CM (Omnipaque [Iohexol] 350 mg I/ mL; Nycomed, Princeton, NJ) saline solutions kept in an incubator at a constant temperature (37℃). Group 2 included 32 patients administered the CM saline solutions kept at constant room temperature (24℃). Cardiac CT scans were performed with a dual source computed tomography (DSCT) scanner. For each group, region of interest curves were plotted inside the ascending aorta, main pulmonary artery and descending aorta on test bolus images. Using enhancement values, time/enhancement diagrams were produced for each vessel. On diagrams, basal Hounsfield unit (HU) values were subtracted from sequentially obtained values. A value of 100 HU was accepted as a cut-off value for the beginning of opacification. The time to peak, the time required to reach 100 HU opacification, maximum enhancement and duration of enhancement above 100 HU were noted. DSCT angiography studies were evaluated for coronary vessel enhancement. Results: Maximum enhancement values in the ascending aorta, descending aorta and main pulmonary artery were significantly higher in group 1 subjects. In the ascending aorta, the median time required to reach 100 HU opacification during the test bolus analysis was significantly shorter for group 2 subjects than for group 1 subjects. In the ascending aorta, the descending aorta and main pulmonary artery, for group 1 subjects, the bolus geometry curve shifted to the left and upwards as compared with the bolus geometry curve for group 2 subjects. Conclusion: The use of warmed CM yields higher enhancement values and a shorter time to reach maximum enhancement duration, resulting in a shift of the bolus geometry curve to the left that may provide optimized image quality.         Assessment of temperature effect in structural health monitoring with piezoelectric wafer active sensors

        This paper presents theoretical and experimental evaluation of the structural health monitoring (SHM) capability of piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) at elevated temperatures. This is important because the technologies for structural sensing and monitoring need to account for the thermal effect and compensate for it. Permanently installed PWAS transducers have been One of the extensively employed sensor technologies for in-situ continuous SHM. In this paper, the electro-mechanical impedance spectroscopy (EMIS) method has been utilized as a dynamic descriptor of PWAS behavior and as a high frequency standing wave local modal technique. Another SHM technology utilizes PWAS as far-field transient transducers to excite and detect guided waves propagating through the structure. This paper first presents how the EMIS method is used to qualify and quantify circular PWAS resonators in an increasing temperature environment up to 230 deg C. The piezoelectric material degradation with temperature was investigated and trends of variation with temperature were deduced from experimental measurements. These effects were introduced in a wave propagation simulation software called Wave Form Revealer (WFR). The thermal effects on the substrate material were also considered. Thus, the changes in the propagating guided wave signal at various temperatures could be simulated. The paper ends with summary and conclusions followed by suggestions for further work.

        Poly(o-anisidine) on brass: Synthesis and corrosion behavior

        The electrochemical synthesis of poly(o-anisidine) (POA) was achieved on brass (CuZn) electrode by applying two scan rates (50 and 20 mVs−1). The synthesized polymer films were strongly adherent and homogeneous in both cases. Their corrosion performance was investigated by AC impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique, anodic polarization plots and open circuit potential-time curves, in 3.5% NaCl solution. It was clearly seen that poly(o-anisidine) films provided a significant physical protection for longer exposure time. It was shown that polymer film coated at high scan rate (CuZn/POA-H) exhibited better barrier property against the attack of corrosive agents when compared with polymer film obtained at low scan rate (CuZn/POA-L). It was found out that poly(o-anisidine) film synthesized at high scan rate caused a significant increase in corrosion resistance by its catalytic behavior on formation of protective oxide layers on the surface in longer time

      • Trends in Smoking among University Students between 2005-2012 in Sakarya, Turkey

        Turkey protects its entire population of 75 million people with all the MPOWER measures at the highest level. The aim of this study is to make a comparison of smoking and addiction data obtained from Sakarya University students in 2005-6 and 2012-13. A total of 4,200 (2,500 and 1,700 for each academic year) students at Sakarya University in Sakarya, Turkey, were randomly selected for sampling purposes. The selected participants represented Sakarya University students. Data were collected using a pretested anonymous and confidential, self-completed questionnaire which took 15-20 minutes to complete and Fagerstrom Test for nicotine dependence. Chi-squared, Spearman correlation, and binary logistic regression tests were used to define associations, if any. The level of significance was kept at alpha=0.05. Smoking prevalance dropped by 8.5% (from 26.9% to 18.5%). Male gender, older age, high family smoking index, low self-rated school success, and high peer smoker proportion were common variables that have correlation with smoking status. In the binary logistic regression test the highest contributor to "being a smoker" was found to be the rate of peer smokers. Having all friends smoking puts the student a a 47.5 and 58.0 times higher risk for smoking for males and females, respectively. Our results suggest an admirable diminution of smoking prevalance among Sakarya University students, which can be attributed to MPOWER protection.
