        A High-Efficiency High Step-Up Interleaved Converter with a Voltage Multiplier for Electric Vehicle Power Management Applications

        This paper proposes a novel high-efficiency high-step-up interleaved converter with a voltage multiplier, which is suitable for electric vehicle power management applications. The proposed interleaved converter is capable of achieving high step-up conversion by employing a voltage-multiplier circuit. The proposed converter lowers the input-current ripple, which can extend the input source"s lifetime, and reduces the voltage stress on the main switches. Hence, large voltage spikes across the main switches are alleviated and the efficiency is improved. Finally, a prototype circuit with an input voltage of 24 V, an output voltage of 380 V, and an output rated power of 1 kW is implemented and tested to demonstrate the functionality of the proposed converter. Moreover, satisfying experimental results are obtained and discussed in this paper. The measured full-load efficiency is 95.2%, and the highest measured efficiency of the proposed converter is 96.3%.

      • SAME 프로젝트: 공통(중앙)교육과정의 접근을 향상시키기 위한 홍콩의 경험

        홍콩 교육부의 교과과정 개발위원회가 교육개혁에 대한 협의안을 발표한 이후, 완전통합교육을 실행하는 홍콩의 mainstream 학교들은 그 수가 증가했으며, 이와 더불어 특수학교들도 “one curriculum for all"의 정신을 반영하는 그들 자체의 교육과정을 개발하기 위해 노력해왔다 (CDC, 2001; Lian, 2001a, 2001b). 하지만, 적절하고 효과적인 교육과정을 개발하는 도중 다음과 같은 여러 가지 문제들이 생겨났다: (a) 특수교육을 요구 하는 학생들의 공통(i.e., mainstream)교과과정에 대한 접근을 도와주기위한 지도가 부족하다; (b) 교수와 평가시스템은 물론 학생들의 학습 진전과 성취를 기술하는 협의된 성취기준들을 갖춘 합의된 언어가 사용되어 오지 못했다; 그리고 (c) 기술훈련 위주의 교육을 중시하고 주요 학습 분야에 대한 지도방향과 이해의 부족으로 학습곤란 아동들에 대한 기대가 일반적으로 낮은 현상이 있다. 따라서 본 논문의 목적은 (a) "공통교과과정에의 접근”에 대한 추세와 관련 연구들을 국제적 경험을 통해 재검토하고, (b) 특수교육을 필요로 하는 홍콩학생들이 “one curriculum for all"을 토대로 공통교과과정에 보다 용이하게 접근할 수 있도록 하기 위하여 평가와 교과과정 개발상의 문제점들을 논의하며; 그리고 (c) 홍콩의 the SAME 프로젝트에 대해 언급하고 프로젝트의 1 단계에서 성취한 결과들을 주요 설명하는 것이다. 또한, 관련분야에 대한 논의도 포함되어있다.

      • The SAME Project: A Hong Kong Experience in Enhancing Accessibility of the Central Curriculum

        Special schools, along with an increasing number of mainstream schools that implement inclusive education in Hong Kong, have been making efforts to develop their own school-based curriculum to echo the spirit of "one curriculum for all" since the Education Bureau’s (EDB) Curriculum Development Council (CDC) released the consultation document on education reform (CDC, 2001 Lian, 2001a, 2001b). However, several concerns surfaced in the processof developing an appropriate and effective curriculum: (a) it was difficult to help students with special education needs (SEN) access the central (i.e., mainstream) curriculum due to the lack of guidance; (b) a common language, as well as a teaching and evaluation system, has not been used with agreed-upon performance standards to describe students’ learning progress and attainment; and (c) the phenomena of having low expectations for children with learning difficulties (CWLD) is common due to high emphasis on skills training-oriented education, a lack of direction inteaching and the understanding of the key learning areas. This paper is, therefore, in an attempt to (a) review the trends and related studies on "access to central curriculum" from international experiences; (b) discuss the concerns on assessment and curriculum development for improving access to central curriculum for students with SEN in Hong Kong with respect to "one curriculum for all" and (c) describe a project (the SAME project) in Hong Kong and to highlight the accomplishment of the Phase 1 of the project. The implications to the field are also discussed.

        Bariatric Surgery in Kidney Transplant Candidates and Recipients: Experience at an Asian Center

        Background: Kidney transplant (KT) candidates and recipients with obesity experience more frequent complications such as infection, poorer allograft outcomes, diabetes, and mortality, limiting their eligibility for transplantation. Bariatric surgery (BS) is not commonly performed among KT patients given concerns about immunosuppression absorption, wound healing, infections, and graft outcomes. Its role has not been described before in an Asian KT patient setting. Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent BS at the largest KT center in Singapore from 2008 to 2020 was conducted. Metabolic outcomes, immunosuppression doses, graft outcomes, and mortality were studied. Results: Seven patients underwent BS and KT (4 underwent BS before KT, 3 underwent BS after KT; 4 underwent sleeve gastrectomy, 3 underwent gastric bypass). Mean total weight losses of 23.8% at 1 year and 18.6% at 5 years post-BS were achieved. Among the five patients with diabetes, glycemic control improved after BS. There were no deaths in the first 90 days or graft loss in the first year after KT and BS. Patients who underwent BS after KT had no significant changes in immunosuppression dose. Conclusion: BS can be safely performed in KT recipients and candidates and results in sustainable weight losses and improvements in metabolic comorbidities. Although no major complications were observed in our study, close monitoring of this complex group of patients is imperative.

      • Eosinophilia in Pleural Effusions: a Speculative Negative Predictor for Malignancy

        Background: Eosinophilic pleural effusion (EPE) is an eosinophil count more than 10% on cytology of pleural samples. Recently, it was reported that malignancy had been the most prevalent cause inducing EPE. Therefore, we conducted an analysis on the prevalence and etiology of EPE and investigated the relationship between EPE and malignancy. Materials and Methods: Data for pleural cell differential count from patients receiving thoracentesis during the period from January 2008 to December 2013 were compared with clinical data and established diagnosis of patients obtained via electronic chart review. Results: A total of 6,801 requests of pleural cytology from 3,942 patients with pleural effusion who had received thoracentesis were available at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital from 2008 to 2013, and of these subjects, 115 (2.9%) were found to have EPE. The most frequent cause of EPE was malignancy (33.0%, n=38), followed by parapneumonic effusions (27.8%, n=32), tuberculosis pleuritis (13.9%, n=16), transudate effusions (12.2%, n=14) and the presence of blood or air in pleural space (10.4%, n=12). Additionally, an inverse relationship of eosinophilia in pleural fluid was identified in patients with malignancy and EPE. The cut-off eosinophil count in pleural fluid was 15% for the most accurate discrimination between malignancy and benign disorders in patients with EPE. At the cut-off level, the sensitivity and specificity were 65.8% and 67.5%, respectively. Conclusions: Pleural fluid eosinophilia was a speculative negative predictor for malignancy, despite the fact that cancers, including lung cancers and metastatic cancers to lung, were the most leading cause of pleural fluid eosinophilia. An inverse correlation was observed between the pleural eosinophil percentage and the likelihood of malignancy in patients with EPE.

      • Strategic Management in the Lodging and Restaurant Industry : Environment, Strategy, Implementation, and Performance

        This study developes and tests an integrated theoretical model that articulates the relationships among the components of strategic management in the hospitality industry. A total of 184 responses to a survey given to the top managers in the hospitality industry, including restaurant and lodging firms, were analyzed. The various relationships among the components in strategic management process were hypothesized and tested by utilizing exploratory factor, confirmatory factor, and structural equation modeling analyses. Results revealed the relationships between environment and strategy, environment and strategy implementation, strategy and strategy implementation, strategy and performance, and strategy implementation and performance. These results imply that the components in strategic management process are interrelated. Thus when a firm makes a decision, it should consider all of the components and right combination of components especially in strategic process, which may increase the possibility of success.

        The effect of differently sized Ag catalysts on the fabrication of a silicon nanowire array using Ag-assisted electroless etching

        A simple and low cost method to generate single-crystalline, well-aligned silicon nanowires (SiNWs) of large area, using Ag-assisted electroless etching, is presented and the effect of differently sized Ag catalysts on the fabrication of SiNWs arrays is investigated. The experimental results show that the size of the Ag catalysts can be controlled by adjusting the pre-deposition time in the AgNO3/HF solution. The optimum pre-deposition time for the fabrication of a SiNWs array is 3 min (about 162.04 38.53 nm Ag catalyst size). Ag catalysts with smaller sizes were formed in a shorter pre-deposition time (0.5 min),which induced the formation of silicon holes. In contrast, a large amount of Ag dendrites were formed on the silicon substrate, after a longer pre-deposition time (4 min). The existence of these Ag dendrites is disadvantageous to the fabrication of SiNWs. Therefore, a proper pre-deposition time for the Ag catalyst is beneficial to the formation of SiNWs. SiNWs were synthesized in the H2O2/HF solution system for different periods of time, using Agassisted electroless etching (pre-deposition of the Ag catalyst for 3 min). The length of the SiNWs increases linearly with immersion time. From TEM, SAED and HRTEM analysis, the axial orientation of the SiNWs is identified to be along the [001] direction, which is the same as that of the initial Si wafer. The use of HF may induce SieHx bonds onto the SiNWarray surface. Overall, the Ag-assisted electroless etching technique has advantages, such as low temperature, operation without the need for high energy and the lack of a need for catalysts or dopants.
