• Considerations for the incorporation of measured surfaces in finite element models.

Thompson, Mary Kathryn,Thompson, John M Gerhard Witzstrock Pub. House 2010 Scanning Vol.32 No.4

This work discusses some of the benefits, techniques, challenges, and considerations associated with the incorporation of measured surfaces in finite element (FE) models including how much surface data to measure and import into the model, the shape of the surface geometry to create, the presence and effect of surface layers and impurities, the required mesh density for rough surfaces, the nature of the element formulations and material properties at small length scales, the differences between measurement and FE coordinate systems, the limitations and idealizations of the FE method, issues associated with boundary conditions and their ability to impose or prevent conformal contact, and issues associated with the size of the pinball region and the contact stiffness relative to the nature of the surface. It also describes some current and future research directions that can be used to validate and expand existing techniques and to improve our understanding of surface phenomena. Information Asymmetry, Time until Deal Completion and Post-M&A Performance

        ( Ephraim Kwashie Thompson ),( Changki Kim ) 한국파생상품학회(구 한국선물학회) 2020 선물연구 Vol.28 No.3

This paper aims to show that information asymmetry plays a vital role in the post-M&A performance-time until deal completion nexus. The findings are that the due diligence hypothesis and the overdue hypothesis proposed and tested in Thompson and Kim (2020) are influenced by the information asymmetry of the target during the negotiation process. Thus, mergers that involve more opaque targets that take a shorter time to close perform better, whereas those that take too long to close experience poor post-M&A performance. Conversely, there is no such effect when the mergers involve targets that are transparent and not plagued with large information asymmetry problems. These results hold for the short-term supporting the evidence that information asymmetry problems are severe before the merger is consummated and become attenuated post-merger.

Production and the Trade Balance in a Small Open Economy

Thompson, Henry 세종대학교 국제경제연구소 1999 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.14 No.3

The trade balance is built directly into a factor proportions model of production. A wealth stockpile of the exported good is maintained, growing when the small open economy has a surplus and shrinking with a deficit. Income and prices determine consumption of exports and imports, while production adjusts to maintain full employment and competitive pricing. The trade balance effects of an import tariff and an export subsidy (equivalently, a devaluation) depend on factor intensity, factor substitution, demand, and factor endowments. Changing factor endowments have no net effect on the trade balance, a reflection of factor price equalization. (JEL Classification: F0)

FOREIGN MANAGEMENT , INTERNATIONAL CAPITAL , AND INCOME REDISTRIBUTION

THOMPSON, HENRY 한국국제경제학회 1993 International Economic Journal Vol.7 No.3

This paper examines the impact of foreign management as a separate input in a competitive economy open to both international trade and international movement of productive capital. Three inputs (capital, iabor, management) are used to produce two final goods in a model characterized by competition, homogeneous products, and full employment. This model provides a simple starting point for the study of multinational firm activity, building on the fundamental competitive factor proportions model of production and trade. A clear distinction arises between international movements of capital and management, and international movements of the two inputs are linked. [F11, F23]

Gastrulation : Current Concepts and Implications for Spinal Malformations

Thompson, Dominic Nolan Paul The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2021 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.64 No.3

It has been recognised for over a century that the events of gastrulation are fundamental in determining, not only the development of the neuraxis but the organisation of the entire primitive embryo. Until recently our understanding of gastrulation was based on detailed histological analysis in animal models and relatively rare human tissue preparations from aborted fetuses. Such studies resulted in a model of gastrulation that neurosurgeons have subsequently used as a means of trying to explain some of the congenital anomalies of caudal spinal cord and vertebral development that present in paediatric neurosurgical practice. Recent advances in developmental biology, in particular cellular biology and molecular genetics have offered new insights into very early development. Understanding the processes that underlie cellular interactions, gene expression and activation/inhibition of signalling pathways has changed the way embryologists view gastrulation and this has led to a shift in emphasis from the 'descriptive and morphological' to the 'mechanistic and functional'. Unfortunately, thus far it has proved difficult to translate this improved knowledge of normal development, typically derived from non-human models, into an understanding of the mechanisms underlying human malformations such as the spinal dysraphisms and anomalies of caudal development. A paediatric neurosurgeons perspective of current concepts in gastrulation is presented along with a critical review of the current hypotheses of human malformations that have been attributed to disorders of this stage of embryogenesis.

Terahertz-Triggered Phase Transition and Hysteresis Narrowing in a Nanoantenna Patterned Vanadium Dioxide Film

        Thompson, Zachary J.,Stickel, Andrew,Jeong, Young-Gyun,Han, Sanghoon,Son, Byung Hee,Paul, Michael J.,Lee, Byounghwak,Mousavian, Ali,Seo, Giwan,Kim, Hyun-Tak,Lee, Yun-Shik,Kim, Dai-Sik American Chemical Society 2015 NANO LETTERS Vol.15 No.9

We demonstrate that high-field terahertz (THz) pulses trigger transient insulator-to-metal transition in a nanoantenna patterned vanadium dioxide thin film. THz transmission of vanadium dioxide instantaneously decreases in the presence of strong THz fields. The transient THz absorption indicates that strong THz fields induce electronic insulator-to-metal transition without causing a structural transformation. The transient phase transition is activated on the subcycle time scale during which the THz pulse drives the electron distribution of vanadium dioxide far from equilibrium and disturb the electron correlation. The strong THz fields lower the activation energy in the insulating phase. The THz-triggered insulator-to-metal transition gives rise to hysteresis loop narrowing, while lowering the transition temperature both for heating and cooling sequences. THz nanoantennas enhance the field-induced phase transition by intensifying the field strength and improve the detection sensitivity via antenna resonance. The experimental results demonstrate a potential that plasmonic nanostructures incorporating vanadium dioxide can be the basis for ultrafast, energy-efficient electronic and photonic devices.

Graphic Abstract
