Damage of radioprotection and antitumor effects of water-soluble propolis

Some natural products are able to inhibit radiation effects and exert an antitumor effect with fewer adverse reactions; however, their antitumor effects are less than those of widely-used synthetic drugs. Propolis is a natural material that has been attracting attention, and we extracted this material with water and investigated the effect of continuous propolis administration on radioactivity-induced reduction of hemocytes, in addition to the antioxidant and antitumor effects of propolis. Following a 1-week adjustment period, water-soluble propolis was administered intraperitoneally to male ICR mice at a dose of 100 mg/kg every other day for 2 weeks. Following administration, 2 Gy whole-body irradiation was performed and the counts of leukocytes, lymphocytes, and granulocytes and monocytes in the peripheral blood were determined 1, 3, 7, 15 and 30 days after irradiation. These cells were considered since they are closely associated with immunity to radioactivity. In a second experiment, water-soluble propolis was similarly administered to the mice for 2 weeks after a 1-week adjustment period, and 2 Gy whole-body irradiation was performed. The antioxidant effects in hemocytes were then investigated using 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH), a radical generator. In a third experiment, $1\;{\times}\;10^6$ Sarcoma-180 cells were inoculated into the right thigh of mice, which were divided into four groups: control, water-soluble propolis-treated, 6 Gy irradiated and water-soluble propolis-treated + 6 Gy irradiated groups, and changes in tumor size were measured for 20 days. Statistical analysis was conducted using ANOVA for multiple groups. In the three experiments, administration of water-soluble propolis inhibited the reduction of hemocytes caused by whole-body irradiation, showed antioxidant effects against radioactivity, and inhibited tumor growth, respectively. In conclusion, our data suggest that the antioxidant effect of watersoluble propolis inhibits hemocyte reduction caused by whole-body irradiation and enhances immunological inhibition of tumor growth.
Cisplatin enhances the anticancer effect of &bgr;-lapachone by upregulating NQO1

NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) has been reported to play an important role in cell death caused by &bgr;-lapachone (&bgr;-lap), 3,4-dihydro-22,2-dimethyl-2H-naphthol[1,22b]pyran-5,6-dione. This study investigated whether cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum) sensitizes cancer cells to &bgr;-lap by upregulating NQO1. The cytotoxicity of cisplatin and &bgr;-lap alone or in combination against FSaII fibrosarcoma cells of C3H mice in vitro was determined with a clonogenic survival assay and assessment of &ggr;-H2AX foci formation, a hallmark of DNA double-strand breaks. The cellular sensitivity to &bgr;-lap progressively increased during the 24 h after cisplatin treatment. The expression and enzymatic activity of NQO1 also increased during the 24 h after cisplatin treatment, and dicoumarol, an inhibitor of NQO1, was found to nullify the cisplatin-induced increase in &bgr;-lap sensitivity. The role of NQO1 in the cell death caused by &bgr;-lap alone or in combination with cisplatin was further elucidated using NQO1-positive and NQO1-negative MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. Cisplatin increased the sensitivity of the NQO1-positive but not the NQO1-negative MDA-MB-231 cells to &bgr;-lap treatment. Combined treatment with cisplatin and &bgr;-lap suppressed the growth of FSaII tumors in the legs of C3H mice in a manner greater than additive. It is concluded that cisplatin markedly increases the sensitivity of cancer to &bgr;-lap in vitro and in vivo by upregulating NQO1.
Development of Spherical Fine Powders by High-pressure Water Atomization Using Swirl Water Jet 2

In order to obtain spherical fine powder, we have developed a new method of high-pressure water atomization system using swirl water jet with the swirl angle . The effect of nozzle apex angle upon the morphology of atomized powders was investigated. Molten copper was atomized by this method, with rad (swirl water jet) and rad (conical water jet). It was found that the median diameter of atomized powders decreased with decreasing down to 0.35 rad in each , but under θ<0.35 rad, increased abruptly with decreasing for rad, while it was still decreased with decreasing for rad.

When performing routine chiropractic treatment, we keep the concepts of posture science in mind. In normal chiropractic care, treatment is carried out to subluxation sites in order to remove any obstructions, yet the human body tries to avoid obstructions by altering the posture while maintaining balance. Therefore, treatment for subluxation sites alone does not necessarily provide sufficient results. Thus, in posture science, treatment is rather performed considering the postural balance of the whole, not individual body parts, considering the human body as an architectural construction. In doing so, we believe that maximum results can be achieved without adding unnecessary irritation. From the perspective of posture science, the anti-gravitational effect that work to restore the center point of gravity, which human beings are equipped with, to the center of the body is important. Through this effect, the stress on the body can be eased while maintaining a constant posture while at rest and even during activity. We conducted our experiment with the assumption that the spine carries a special function against unstable wobbling(stress) in order to maintain a stable continuous posture.

The utility interactive sinewave modulated inverter for the solar photovoltaic (PV) power conversion and conditioning with a new high frequency pulse modulated link is presented for domestic residential applications. As compared with the conventional full-bridge hard switching PWM inverter with a high frequency AC link, the simplest single-ended quasi-resonant soft switching sinewave modulated inverter with a duty cycle pulse control is implemented, resulting in size and weight reduction and low-cost. This paper presents a prototype circuit of the single-ended zero voltage soft switching sinewave inverter for solar power conditioner and its operating principle. In addition, this paper proposes a control system to deliver high quality output current. Major design of each component and the power loss analysis under actual power processing is also discussed from an experimental point of view. A newly developed interactive sinewave power processor which has 92.5% efficiency at 4kW output is demonstrated. Organic thin-film diodes with internal charge separation zone

We demonstrate the fabrication of new organic thin-lm diodes with an internal bipolar charge separation (ICS) zone. Wefabricated an organic double-layer diode with the structure of indium-tin oxide (ITO)/tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum(III) (Alq3)/N,N0-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,10-biphenyl-4,40-diamine (TPD)/Al. The stacking order of Alq3 and TPD of this diode is reversedcompared with conventional organic double-layer LEDs. In the ITO/Alq3/TPD/Al device, only a small current ows in both caseswhen the ITO electrode is biased positive or negative, because the device has large charge injection barriers and transport resistance.When the combined zone composed of Mg-doped Alq3 and vanadium oxide layers was inserted between the Alq3/TPD interface,large current ow was observed at the positive bias on ITO electrode. The diode behaved quite similar with the conventional organicLED, ITO/TPD/Alq3/Al. The large increase of forward current can never be ascribed to the decrease of injection barriers nor chargetransport resistance, because no change of device conguration was added except for the addition of the zone at the Alq3/TPDinterface. This large forward current ow was ascribed to the internal bipolar charge separation within the added zone..
