Extensive research to establish an index of roughness that causes abrupt turbulent transition downstream of the roughness and affect natural laminar flow is performed. This study investigates turbulent transitions dominated by the roughness-induced crossflow instability on a swept wing and a swept flat plate. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed considering the swept wing to determine the critical roughness height that induces abrupt turbulent transition. Compared to its no-roughness counterpart, the roughness increases both the pressure drag and skin-friction drag and decreases the lift owing to the onset of upstream turbulence. The wind tunnel tests are performed considering a swept flat-plate boundary-layer model. The development of turbulent regions due to the roughness is investigated. The results reveal the occurrence of a laminar-to-turbulent transition and relaminarization, along the boundary between laminar and localized turbulent regions. Moreover, the DNS results reveal the generation of traveling crossflow vortices from the localized turbulent region.

Many persons suffer form severe disabilities such as armyouophic lateral selerosis (ALS) caused by neurological disorders. Such kinds of disablilities bring various restrictions to communication and circumstance in their daily life. A simple communication method using neuro-biological signal will be effective and helpful to-enhance their life quality. In this study, a simple on-off communication method using electroncephalogram(EEG) and electroculogram(EOG) was proposed. In case of EEG, parameters for linear regressive equation were selected by ATC. The results showd that the accuracy was extremely high with both communication methods.
A method of object tracking based on Particle Filter and Optical Flow
Takahiro Kodama,Teruo Yamaguchi,Hiroshi Harada 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8
In this paper, we propose the technique for tracking the velocity of objects that combines the particle filter with optical flow. If color of the target or feature of its shape is unknown, some conventional particle filters are hard to apply because the prediction step of them are based on probabilistic theory. This problem can be solved by estimation method of optical flow. Experimental results show that unstructured objects can be tracked.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is a destructive event that causes a permanent deficit in neurological function because of poor regenerative potential. Transplantation therapies have attracted attention for restoration of the injured spinal cord, and transplantation of neural precursor cells (NPCs) has been studied worldwide. Several groups have demonstrated functional recovery via this therapeutic intervention due to the multiple beneficial effects of NPC transplantation, such as reconstruction of neuronal circuits, remyelination of axons, and neuroprotection by trophic factors. Our group developed a method to induce NPCs from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and established a transplantation strategy for SCI. Functional improvement in SCI animals treated with hiPSC-NPCs was observed, and the safety of transplanting these cells was evaluated from multiple perspectives. With selection of a safe cell line and pretreatment of the cells to encourage maturation and differentiation, hiPSC-NPC transplantation therapy is now in the clinical phase of testing for subacute SCI. In addition, a research challenge will be to expand the efficacy of transplantation therapy for chronic SCI. More comprehensive strategies involving combination treatments are required to treat this problematic situation.

We have calculated the energy band structures and the Fermi surfaces of PuS, PuSe, and PuTeby using a self-consistent relativistic linear augmented-plane-wave method with the exchange andcorrelation potential in the local density approximation. In general, the energy bands near theFermi level are mainly caused by the hybridization between the Pu 5f and the monochalcogenidep electrons. The obtained main Fermi surfaces consisted of two hole sheets and one electron sheet, which were constructed from the band having both the Pu 5f state and the monochalcogenide pstate.
Physical Educators’ Experiences Teaching Secondary English Language Learners
Takahiro Sato,Sue Sutherland 한국체육학회 2013 International journal of human movement science Vol.7 No.2
Ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity is becoming more prevalent in public schools within the United States (US). According to the Migration Policy Institute (2010), close to 5.3 million English Language Learners (ELLs) are enrolled in K-12 public schools in the US. Of these 5.3 million ELLs, many of whom attend urban schools, are also new to the US and are experiencing American culture for the first time. While common academic language in physical education is easily understood by English speaking students, this is not often the case for ELLs, putting them at a disadvantage in physical education. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine and analyze eight secondary physical education teachers' experiences of teaching English Language Learners (ELLs) in urban schools. Data were collected through face-to-face and email interviews and transcribed verbatim. Transcribed data were analyzed and reduced using the constant comparative method (Merriam, 1998). The recurring themes from this study were (a) teaching normative American activities, (b) challenges and concerns of teaching PE, and (c) gender roles and religions. On a positive note, these teachers were empathetic and supportive of the ELLs in urban secondary schools. Implications include strategies for assisting physical education teachers who teach ELLs.
