우리는 이제까지 bacteria와 yeast 등에서 관찰되어 온 diauxic growth 현상이 식물에서도 관찰되는지에 대해 연구해왔다. 우리는 이미 단자엽(벼) 현탁배양을 acetate와 glucose 가 혼합되어 있는 배지에서 성장시켰을 때 diauxic growth 현상이 있음을 보고하였다 (1). 우리는 쌍자엽식물에서도 diauxic growth가 관찰되는지 알아보기 위하여 당근의 현탁배양을 이용하여 연구하였다. 당근의 현탁배양세포를 glucose와 acetate가 혼합되어 들어있는 배지에서 성장시켰을 때 diauxic growth가 관찰되었다. Diauxic growth의 첫 번째 성장기에 acetate를 사용하고 두 번째 성장기에 glucose를 사용한다. 첫 번째 성장기에 있는 세포는 [^14C]acetate를 흡수하지만 [^14C]glucose 는 흡수하지 못했다. [^14C]glucose 흡수는 두 번째 성장기 세포에서 관찰할 수 있었다. 벼의 현탁배양 세포와 마찬가지로 당근의 현탁배양세포도 acetate를 일차적인 탄소원으로 사용하는 diauxic growth가 관찰되었다. We have been investigating acetate-glucose diauxic growth in plant. It was reported that rice (monocotyledon) suspension cells were exhibited diauxic growth on acetate (10 mM) and glucose (10 mM) medium (1). To investigate diauxic growth in dicotyledoneous plant, carrot (Daucus carota L.) suspension cells were grown on acetate and glucose medium Suspension culture of carrot exhibited diauxic growth when grown in a medium containing both acetate and glucose as carbon sources. Preferential utilization of acetate was observed in the initial growth phase of diauxic growth, whereas the second growth phase occured at the expense of glucose. Cells harvested during the first growth phase exhibited a capacity uptake of [^14C]acetate but not of [^14C]glucose. A capacity for [^14C]glucose uptake was expressed during the second growth phase. Like in rice suspension cells, in carrot suspension cells acetate was used as the primary carbon source during the acetate-glucose diauxic growth.

In Korea, careinoma of the cervix is the most common malignancy in women annually affecting 25 per every 100,000 female. The widespread use of the Papanicolaou smear has resulted in earlier detection of the tumor and a reduction in the number of patients with advanced disease, but the incidence of cervix. carcinoma is still the fifth most common malignancy in the world. Cervical carcinoma spreads to the small bowel primarily by direct extension from involved lymph nodes, most commonly from peraaortic or mesenteric nodes to the serosa of the bowel. But, the involvement of small bowel by cervical carcinoma is so rare, and shows a maximum incidence of small bowel involvement of less than 1.5%. We report a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix metastases to the second portion of the duodenum in whom the diagnosis was made by endoscopic biopsy of the lesion.

Objective : Pituitary apoplexy is life-threatening clinical syndrome caused by the rapid enlargement of a pituitary tumor due to hemorrhage and/or infarction. The pathogenesis of pituitary apoplexy is not completely understood. We analyzed the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of pituitary tumors and subsequently correlated the radiological findings with the clinical presentation. Additionally, immunohistochemistry was also performed to determine whether certain biomarkers are related to radiological apoplexy. Methods : Thirty-four cases of pituitary adenoma were enrolled for retrospective analysis. In this study, the radiological apoplexy was defined as cases where hemorrhage, infarction or cysts were identified on MRI. Acute clinical presentation was defined as the presence of any of the following symptoms: severe sudden onset headache, decreased visual acuity and/or visual field deficit, and acute mental status changes. Angiogenesis was quantified by immunohistochemical expression of fetal liver kinase 1 (Flk-1), neuropilin (NRP) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression, while microvascular density (MVD) was assessed using Endoglin and CD31. Results : Clinically, fourteen patients presented with acute symptoms and 20 for mild or none clinical symptoms. Radiologically, fifteen patients met the criteria for radiological apoplexy. Of the fifteen patients with radiologic apoplexy, 9 patients presented acute symptoms whereas of the 19 patient without radiologic apoplexy, 5 patients presented acute symptoms. Of the five biomarkers tracked, only VEGF was found to be positively correlated with both radiological and nonradiological apoplexy. Conclusion : While pituitary apoplexy is currently defined in cases where clinical symptoms can be histologically confirmed, we contend that cases of radiologically identified pituitary hemorrhages that present with mild or no symptoms should be designated subacute or subclinical apoplexy. VEGF is believed to have a positive correlation with pituitary hemorrhage. Considering the high rate of symptomatic or asymptomatic pituitary tumor hemorrhage, additional studies are needed to detect predictors of the pituitary hemorrhage.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a benign mucin producing tumor of the peritoneum which is usually diagnosed using a laparotomy. It is uncommon to find a case of pseudomyxoma peritonei which has been diagnosed using a peritoneoscopy in Korea; there are only two cases reported in the literature. We recently experienced a case of pseudomyxoma peritonei in a 61 year old woman who manifested a typical case using a peritoneoscopy. Thick, jelly-like materials were adherent to polypoid nodular masses of the parietal peritoneum, which originated from the mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of an ovary. In this report we discuss the case with relevant review of the literature.

Background/Aims: Rebleeding and recurrence of varices are frequent problems following endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL). However, few data are available on the risk factors associated with rebleeding and recurrence. Our aims were to elucidate the clinical feaNres and risk factors associated with rebleeding and recuuence. Methods: One-hundred and eight patients who had undergone EVL due to bleeding esopltageal varices were included in the study. EVL was performed with the Stiegman-Goff Endoscopic Ligator at 2 week intervals until the varices are eradicated or reduced to grade 1 without red color sign (defined as successful EVL), followed by gastroscopy every 3 months. Rebleeding was defined using the descriptions from the Second Baveno International Consensus Meeting, in 1995. Recurrence was defined as increments of varices to grade 2 or greater or appearance of red color sign on follow-up examinations. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to determine the rebleeding and recurrence rate. The Log-rank lest and Cox regression lest were used for univariale and multivariate analysis of risk factors, respectively. Results: 1) The most common cause of rebleeding within 2 weeks from the EVL was esophageal ulcer (50%); whereas, the most common cause of rebleeding after 2 weeks was recurrent varices (38%). 2) In univariate analysis, persistence of esophageal ulcer at 2 weeks after the first EVL was associated with rebleeding (p=0.01); whereas, age, Child class, grade and extent of varices, presence of gastric varices and/or portal hypertensive gastropathy, total number of bands and sessions for successful EVL were not (p >0.05). Persistence of esophageal ulcer at 2 weeks after the first EVL was associated with rebleeding also in multivariate analysis (relative risk 5.87, p=0.01). 3) In univariate analysis, grade (p=0.01) and extent (p=0.01) of varices were related to recurrence; whereas, age, Child class, presence of gastric varices and/or portal hypertensive gastropathy, total number of bands and sessions for successful EVL were not (p >0.05). In multivariate analysis, grade of varices was the only risk factor associated with recurrence (relative risk 3.76, p=0.01). Conclusions: 1) Persistence of esophageal ulcer at second week after the first EVL was associated with rebleeding. 2) Frequent follow-up endoscopic examinations are necessary in patients who present with high grade of vaces since risk of recurrence is high even after successful EVL.

<P>Pressure-assisted investment casting based on the pressure differential between melting and casting chambers was used to fabricate a tetrahedral titanium lattice structure. The pressure differential between the melting chamber and the casting chamber effectively minimized the formation of the alpha-case layer and the tensile yield strength was barely influenced by the thin alpha-case layer. The effective compressive yield strength of the titanium lattice structure was dependent upon the number of cells. Cracks were generated at the joint of the struts in the titanium lattice structure during compression tests. An increased number of cells resulted in a decrease of the effective yield strength by concentrating stress at the joint between the struts where the bending stress was applied. As a result, the mechanical properties of the titanium lattice structure were strongly affected by structural morphology and the number of cells.</P>
Altered Sulfate Metabolism of Arabidopsis Caused by Beet Severe Curly Top Virus Infection

Sulfur, an important component of plants, is regulated by a variety of stresses in sulfate assimilation and metabolism. Increase has been observed in the expression of O-acetylserine(thiol)lyase (OASTL) through two-dimensional electrophoresis with the shoot tips of Arabidopsis infected by beet severe curly top geminivirus (BSCTV). With the three- to six-fold increases in the transcript expression of OASTL, serine acetyltransferase (SAT) and $\gamma$-glutmylcysteine synthetase (GSH) were induced over the mock-inoculated organization in each organization through real-time RT-PCR analysis. The expression of those genes might affect the accumulation of anthocyanin in symptomatic tissues and the induction of abnormal callus-like structures formed by additional cell divisions as typical disease symptoms of BSCTV-infected Arabidopsis. This is the first report to describe the collaborative induction of OASTL, SAT, and GSH in virus-infected plants. The changed expressions of OASTL, SAT, and GSH in Arabidopsis infected with BSCTV raises new aspects regarding the biological function of symptomatic tissues related to sulfate metabolism.
