      • Tuning anti-microbial activity of poly(4-vinyl 2-hydroxyethyl pyridinium) chloride by anion exchange reactions.

        <P>A series of new bioactive polymers with pendant choline analogous group was prepared by anion exchange reaction direct at the quaternary nitrogen of the polycation. Poly(4-vinyl 2-hydroxyethyl pyridinium) chloride was prepared in situ by simultaneous polymerization and quaternization of 4-vinyl pyridine with 2-chloroethanol that also acts as catalyst. The counter anion (Cl(-)) of the polycation was exchanged by anion exchange reaction with Br(-), (-)OH, (-)SH, NO(3) (-), BF(4) (-) or CF(3)COO(-). Evidence of anion exchange was obtained by the characterization of the resultant polymers. The nature of the counter anion has profound effect on their properties including strong anion-dependent anti-microbial activity against bacteria and fungus. Polymer containing (-)OH was observed to be the most potent anti-microbial agent with the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration against both the classes of microbes studied.</P>

        Zinc Chloride Modified Electronic Transport and Relaxation Studies in Barium-Tellurite Glasses

        The ac conductivity of halide based tellurium glasses havingcomposition 70 TeO2-(30-x) BaO-x ZnCl2 ; x = 5, 10, 15 , 20 and 25has been investigated in the frequency range 10-1 Hz to 105Hz and inthe temperature range 453 K to 553 K. The frequency and temperaturedependent ac conductivity show mixed behaviour with increase inhalide content and found to obey Jonscher’s universal power law. Thevalues of dc conductivity, crossover frequency and frequency exponenthave been estimated from the fitting of experimental data of acconductivity with Jonscher’s universal power law. For determining theconduction mechanism in studied glass system, frequency exponent hasbeen analyzed by various theoretical models. In presently studiedglasses, the ac conduction takes place via overlapping large polarontunneling (OLPT). The values of activation energy for dc conduction(W) and the one associated with relaxation process (ER) are found toincrease with increase in x up to glass sample with x = 15 and thereafterit decrease with increase in zinc chloride content. DC conduction takes place via variable range hopping (VRH) as proposed byMott with some modification suggested by Punia et al. The value of real part of modulus (M') is observed to decrease withincrease in temperature. The value of stretched exponent (β) obtained from fitting of M'' reveals the presence of non-Debye typeof relaxation in presently studied glass samples. Scaling spectra of ac conductivity and values of electric modulus (M' and M'')collapse into a single master curve for all the compositions and temperatures. The values of relaxation energy (ER) for all thestudied glass compositions are almost equal to W, suggesting that polarons have to overcome same barrier while relaxing andconducting. The conduction and relaxation processes in the studied glass samples are composition and temperature independent.

      • Successful Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis C Infection with Directly Acting Antivirals in Renal Transplant Recipients

        Background and Aims: The data regarding the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) in renal transplant recipients is lacking from the Asia-Pacific region. Aim of the present study was to assess the safety and efficacy of directly acting antivirals (DAAs) in the treatment of CHC infection in renal transplant recipients. Methods: A total of 47 HCV infected renal transplant recipients were enrolled in this real life observational cohort analysis between March 2015 and September 2016. Presence of hepatic fibrosis/cirrhosis was assessed on transient elastography (Fibroscan). Fourteen patients were treated with Sofosbuvir and Ribavirin for 24 weeks. Twenty-two patients received Sofosbuvir and Ledipasvir and twelve patients received Sofosbuvir and Daclatasvir with (n=3) or without (n=31) Ribavirin for 12 or 24 weeks depending on genotype and underlying cirrhosis. Data was analyzed for safety and treatment efficacy [sustained virological response at 12 weeks (SVR12)]. Results: The mean baseline HCV RNA concentration in the whole group was 7.38 x 106 IU/ml (1.23 x 104- 6.36 X 107). The SVR12 rates were 100% in all groups except in the Sofosbuvir and Ribavirin group (86%). Transient Elastography revealed minimal or no fibrosis (F0-F1) in 31 (65.96%) patients, moderate fibrosis (F2) in 11 (23.4%) patients and cirrhosis in 5 (10.64%) patients. The only serious adverse effect was anemia observed in 8 (57%) patients in the Sofosbuvir and Ribavirin group. Conclusions: DAAs including Sofosbuvir, Daclatasvir and Ledipasvir with or without ribavirin are safe and effective for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C in renal transplant recipients

        Management of human bite injury of the upper and lower eyelids: a rare case report

        Human bite injury to the eyelid is extremely rare and poses a significant challenge in surgical reconstruction. We report an extremely rare case of human bite injury to the eyelid in a 43-year-old male with approximately 60% full thickness loss of the upper eyelid and 80% to 90% full thickness loss of the lower eyelid and its successful reconstruction using the local advancement cheek flap.

        A large osteoid osteoma of the mandibular condyle causing conductive hearing loss: a case report and review of literature

        Osteoid osteomas are benign skeletal neoplasms that are commonly encountered in the bones of the lower extremities, but are exceedingly rare in jaw bones with a prevalence of less than 1%. This unique clinical entity is usually seen in younger individuals, with nocturnal pain and swelling as its characteristic clinical manifestations. The size of the lesion is rarely found to be more than 2 cm. We hereby report a rare case of osteoid osteoma originating from the neck of the mandibular condyle that grew to large enough proportions to result in conductive hearing loss in addition to pain, swelling and restricted mouth opening. In addition, an effort has been made to review all the documented cases of osteoid osteomas of the jaws that have been published in the literature thus far.

        Unpredictable Reproductive Behavior of Cedrus deodara (Roxb.) G. Don

        The long lived iteroparous conifers produce male and female gametophyte for hundreds of years once they reach the reproductive stage, however, the production of seed is not frequent. This phenomenon of infrequent seed production in conifers is yet to be understood. An attempt to study this change in cone production in Cedrus deodara of Western Himalayas -a species reported to be mainly monoecious and rarely dioecious has been made. The observations recorded on selected trees of flowering/fruiting stage for four years at four different locations have shown the species to be dioecious with higher percentage of female trees during good seed year but with no definite or predictable pattern of reproduction in the trees. A decline in production of female trees was witnessed at all but one location immediately year after reaching the maximum (good seed year). The phenomenon of seed production has been observed to be cyclic and site specific. A change in the sexual behavior of the trees from male to female or vice-versa, male or female turning monoecious or vegetative and vegetative coming to reproductive was unpredictable.

        Influence of Milk Co-precipitates on the Quality of Restructured Buffalo Meat Blocks

        Restructuring had made it possible to utilize lower value cuts and meat trimmings from spent animals by providing convenience in product preparation besides enhancing tenderness, palatability and value. Milk co-precipitates (MCP) have been reported to improve the nutritional and functional properties of certain meat products. This study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of incorporation of milk co-precipitates at four different levels viz. 0, 10, 15 and 20% on the quality of restructured buffalo meat blocks. Low-calcium milk co-precipitates were prepared from skim milk by heat and salt coagulation of milk proteins. Meat chunks were mixed with the curing ingredients and chilled water in a Hobart mixer for 5 minutes, followed by addition of milk co-precipitates along with condiments and spice mix and again mixed for 5 minutes. Treated chunks were stuffed in aluminium moulds and cooked in steam without pressure for 1.5 h. After cooking, treated meat blocks were compared for different physico-chemical and sensory attributes. Meat blocks incorporated with 10% MCP were significantly better (p<0.05) than those incorporated with 0, 15 and 20% MCP in cooking yield, percent shrinkage and moisture retention. Sensory scores were also marginally higher for meat blocks incorporated with 10% MCP than product incorporated with 15 and 20% MCP, besides being significantly higher than control. On the basis of above results 10% MCP was considered optimum for the preparation of restructured buffalo meat blocks. Instrumental texture profile analysis revealed that meat blocks incorporated with 10% MCP were significantly better (p<0.05) in hardness/ firmness than control although, no significant (p>0.05) differences were observed in cohesiveness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness of both type of samples.
