        Intracavitary Radiation Therapy for Recurrent Cystic Brain Tumors with Holmium-166-Chico : A Pilot Study

        Objective : Intracavitary injection of beta-emitting radiation source for control of cystic tumors has been tried with a benefit of localized internal radiation. The authors treated cystic brain tumor patients with Holmium-166-chitosan complex (Ho-166-chico), composed of a beta-emitting radionuclide Holmium-166 and biodegradable chit polymer, and evaluated the safety and effective measurement for response. Methods : Twenty-two patients with recurrent cystic brain tumor and/or located in a deep or eloquent area were enrolled in this pilot study. The cyst volume and wall thickness were determined on CT or MRI to assess radiological response. The activity of Ho-166-chico injected via Ommaya reservoir was prescribed to be 10-25 Gy to the cyst wall in a depth of 4 mm. Results : There was neither complications related to systemic absorption nor leakage of Ho-166-chico in all 22 patients. But, two cases of oculomotor paresis were observed in patients with recurrent craniopharyngioma. Radiological response was seen in 14 of 20 available follow-up images (70%). Seven patients of 'evident' radiological response experienced more than 25% decrease of both cyst volume and wall thickness. Another 7 patients with 'suggestive' response showed decrease of cyst volume without definitive change of the wall thickness or vice versa. All patients with benign tumors or low grade gliomas experienced symptomatic improvement. Conclusion : Ho-166-chico intracavitary radiation therapy for cystic tumor is a safe method of palliation without serious complications. The determination of both minimal effective dosage and time interval of repeated injection through phase 1 trial could improve the results in the future.

        The plenty of availability and high precision of GPS CORS is the reason why it become important more and more in the fields of surveying widely. In this study. I extracted the arbitrary point's coordinate which is using GPS CORS data. now served in RINEX FORMAT via Inter-Net, with observation network of the existing triangulation and GPS CORS data. Then. with this arbitrary point as reference station. RTK GPS was performed. And I will study VRS-GPS concept which reduces the time and cost in the fields of surveying.

      • 바이오필터 효율에 미치는 담체의 영향

        We studied on the removal of toluene vapors in a lab-scale biofilter. Biofiltration was performed in a column with upflow toluene-contaminated air under ambient conditions. The column was packed with mixture of Peat and Calstone(5:3 vol. Ratio), synthetic media, and bark and wood chip, which were inoculated with Pseudomonas putida. The biofilter was operated under the conditions of various inlet toluene concentrations for 180days. The effect of operating conditions such as flow rate, inlet toluene concentration and moisture contents on the performance of the biofilter was sequentially investigated in this study. The biofilter treated the toluene containing air up to a maximum elimination capacity of 40g/m^(3)hr at the inlet load of 30g/m^(3)hr with percentage removals of 20~90% when gas retention times were between 1 and 2min. The pressure drop through the biofilter column was negligible such as 0.054cmH_(2)O/m.

        항생제 다제내성균 Staphylococcus aureus SA2로부터 분리한 테트라사이클린 내성 플라스미드 pKH6의 염기서열

        한국에서 임산균주로부터 분리한 테트라사이클린(Tc) 내성 플라스미드 pKH6의 전체 염기서열을 결정하여 가장 대표적인 Tc 내성 플라스미드인 pT181과 비교하였다. pKH6의 전체 길이는 4439bp로 pT181과 동일하게 나타났으며 염기서열은 7개의 염기에서 차이를 보였다. 전부 다 염기쌍이 치환된 형태로 나타났으며 그 중 3개는 coding 부위에서 일어났다. coding 부위에서 일어난 경우에도 1개는 동일한 아미노산을 coding 하였기 때문에 pT181과 차이가 없었으며 RepC와 Pre 단백질에 있어 각각 1개의 아미노산에서 차이를 나타내었다. The complete nucleotide sequence of pKH6, a tetracycline-resistance (Tc^r) plasmid isolated from multi-drug resistant Staphlococcus aureus SA2, has been determined and compared with that of the staphylococcal Tc^r plasmid pT181. The nucleotide sequences of the two plasmids are in agreement except for 7 nucleotides. All differences are caused by base pair substitutions. Among 6 substitutions, 3 occurred in coding regions. However, only tow base substitutions in coding regions resulted in changes of amino acid sequences in two different ORFs of repC and Pre proteins.

        AB 슬라이드, 크런치 및 윗몸일으키기 운동이 복직근 근활성도에 미치는 효과 : Comparison of It `s Myoelectrical Activities with Crunch and Sit-Up

        The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of AB slide™ on abdominal muscles with Crunch and Sit-up. Myoelectrical activities of Rectus abdominis muscles produced by AB slide™, Crunch and Sit-up were recorded. Healthy male aged from 17 to 36 years(23.0±5.9 yrs) were included fo the test. Surface electrodes were attached to upper and lower part of Rectus abdominis of the study subjects. Averaged integrated electromyography(AIEMG) and Normalized integrated electromyography(NIEMG) were recorded. The results are summarized as follows; First, the AIEMG of Sit-up were highest among them with insignificant difference statistically. Second, the NIEMG of upper part of Rectus abdominis were higher than the one of lower part with significant difference statistically(p<0.05). This phenomenon was same irrespective of the type of exercises. AB slide™ was not more effective than Sit-up and Crunch for strengthening of Rectus abdominis muscle. The upper part of Rectus abdominis was more activated than the lower part by all three exercises.

        Streptococcus salivarius의 요소분해효소 활성에 관한 연구

        Dental caries is induced by organic acids produced by oral bacteria. In order to prevent dental caries, therefore, it is essential to maintain neutral pH in the oral cavity. Urea plays a major role in oral pH homeostasis. Urea is hydrolyzed by bacterial ureases to ammonia, causing a pH elevation, Streptococcus salivarius has been shown to be a major contribution to oral ureolysis. Synthesis of urease by S. salivarius appears to be constituitive, but can be greatly enhanced by low pH. It is, therefore, conceivable that ureolytic activity of S. salivarius from a carious lesion is greater than that of the bacterium from a healthy tooth. In the present study, urease activity of S. salivarius isolates from dental plaque of carious lesions was compared with that of the isolates from plaques of the teeth and the dorsum of the tongue; 45 S. salivarius strains were isolated from carious lesions(>C2) of 21 individuals with dental caries and 30 strains from 10 individuals without dental caries. The results were as follows: 1. All the 21 individuals with dental caries harbored ureolytic S. salivarius whereas 3 of 13 individuals without dental caries harbored non-ureolytic strains of S. salivarius. 2. All the 45 S. salivarius isolates from carious lesions showed urease activity. In contrast, of 30 isolates from individuals without dental caries, 17 isolates(56.7%) did not demonstrate urease activity, or if any, very little(<5μmol/min/mg). 3. Urease activity of the isolates from carious lesions was greater than that of the isolates from individuals without dental caries:the urease activity ranged from 42 to 381μmol/min/mg and from 0 to 208μmol/min/mg, respectively. 4. At acid pH(5.5), the isolates which showed intermediate urease activity at pH 7.0 demonstrated even higher activity whereas the isolate with no or lower urease activity did not show any significant difference in their activity. However, the isolates with the greatest urease activity from both individuals with and without dental caries, exhibited a rather much lower urease activity at pH 5.5. The overall results suggest that isolates may have their own urease activity but the isolates exposed to chronic acidic environment of the carious lesion might elevate urease activity of S. salivarius, which in turn, might influence on survival of S. salivarius itself and other bacteria establishing a new oral bacterial ecosystem.

        Polyphosphate가 Porphyromonas endodontalis의 성장에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

        Polyphosphate has been used to prevent decomposition of foods and has been shown to have inhibitory effect on the growth of gram positive bacteria. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of polyphosphate on the growth of Porphyromonas endodontalis, a gram negative endodontopathic bacterium. Porphyromonas endodontalis ATCC 35406 was grown in the presence of polyphosphates with different chain lengths. Inhibitory effect of each polyphosphate which was added at the beginnig or during the culture, was determined by measuring the optical density of the bacterial cell at 540nm and by viable cell count. The results from this study were as follows : 1. Polyphosphates were shown the growth inhibition of the Porphyromonas endodontalis. 2. The minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of polyphosphate was observed to be 0.04%. 3. Polyphosphates with chain lengths of 25 and 75 demonstrated the greatest inhibitory effect on the growth of Porphyromonas endodontalis. 4. Polyphosphates are bactericidal to Porphyromonas endodontalis, demonstrating the growth inhibition of the bacterium. The overall results suggest that use of polyphosphate may affect the growth of Porphyromonas endodontalis. Further studies will be needed to confirm the effect of Polyphosphate.

      • 이중필름 수막시스템의 에너지 절감 효과

        This study was carried out to investigate energy saving effect and thermal insulation characteristics of double film water curtain system during the coldest season in greenhouse. A double film water curtain system is a ground water spraying system between double layered plastic film, and it is able to make uniform water curtain. The experimental greenhouses were plastic greenhouses of two types. A type-Ⅰ was a two-thirds arched shape and its area was 350㎡ . A type-Ⅱ was a triangle shape and its area was 190㎡. Both greenhouses were cultivated with cactus. The minimum outside air temperature ranged was -2.6 to -16.7℃ and nocturnal ambient mean temperature was -6.5℃. The experimental greenhouses have maintained the air temperature above 2℃ of type-Ⅰ and 8℃ of type-Ⅱ. The ground water spraying flow rates of these greenhouses were 7.0ℓ/㎡hr of type-Ⅰ and 4.3ℓ/㎡hr of type-Ⅱ. The overall heat transfer coefficient of type-Ⅰ greenhouse was calculated at 1.97 kcal//㎡hr℃ and type-Ⅱ was 1.44 kcal/㎡hr℃. The energy saving rate of type-Ⅰ greenhouse was estimated and 78.1% and type-Ⅱ was 98.9%.
