        COLLISION AVOIDANCE OF LOW SPEED AUTONOMOUS SHUTTLES WITH PEDESTRIANS

        This paper is on a pedestrian collision avoidance system for low speed autonomous shuttles based on Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communication. When pedestrians cannot be detected using line-of-sight sensors like camera, radar and LIDAR, V2P communication with the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) enabled pedestrian smartphone is used to detect and localize them through the in-vehicle DSRC radio used for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. The vehicle, then, either stops or, if possible, goes around the pedestrian in a socially acceptable manner using the elastic band method for locally modifying the vehicle trajectory in real time. The elastic band method of collision avoidance is modified for fast real time execution in this paper. Along with model-in-the-loop simulations, a hardware-in-the-loop simulator using an automated driving vehicle model in the high fidelity vehicle dynamics simulation program Carsim Real Time with Sensors and Traffic with two DSRC modems emulating the vehicle and pedestrian communications is introduced and used in this paper as a prerequisite to real world experiments. Both stationary and moving pedestrians are considered in the model and hardware-in-the-loop simulations. Two real world experiments are also presented to demonstrate the V2P based avoidance of crashes between low speed autonomous shuttles and pedestrians.

        HYPO-CONVERGENCE OF SEQUENCES OF FUZZY SETS AND MAXIMIZATION

        In optimization theory, hypo-convergence is considered as an effective tool by providing the convergence of supremum values undersome conditions. This feature makes it different from other types of convergence. Therefore, we have defined the hypo-convergence of a sequence of fuzzy sets due to the increasing interest in fuzzy set theory in recent years. After giving a theoretical framework, we deal with the optimization process by using a sequential characterization of hypo-convergence of sequence of fuzzy sets. Since the maximization process in optimization theory is beyond the presence of hypo-convergence, we give some conditions to satisfy the convergence of supremum values. Furthermore, we show how sequence of fuzzy sets and fuzzy numbers differ in the convergence of the supremum values.

        The Effects of Grape Seed Flour on the Quality of Turkish Dry Fermented Sausage (Sucuk) during Ripening and Refrigerated Storage

        In this study, the effects of grape seed flour on the physical-chemical properties, microbiological and sensory properties of Turkish dry fermented sausage, sucuk, was investigated. After the sausages produced with beef, beef fat, sheep tail fat and spices, they were ripened for 14 d. Then they were vacuum-packaged and stored for 80 d at 4ºC. The effects of grape seed flour (GSF; 0%, 0.75%, 1.5%, 3%) on the physical-chemical properties (pH, moisture, fat, protein, free fatty acids, thiobarbituric acids, diameter reduction, ripening yield, instrumental colour), microbiological properties (total aerobic mesophilic and lactic acid bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae, mould and yeast) and sensory properties of the sausages were investigated. Grape seed flour decreased moisture, TBA, diameter reduction, instrumental colour (a, b) values and sensory analysis scores during the ripening period; it also decreased TBA, instrumental colour (L, a, b) values, total aerobic mesophilic and lactic acid bacteria counts during the storage period. It was concluded that grape seed flour has a potential application as an additive in dry fermented sausages.

        Effect of Ripening Period, Nitrite Level and Heat Treatment on the Chemical Characteristics of Turkish Dry Fermented Sausage (Sucuk)

        In order to determine the potential for reduction of nitrite levels and ripening period with heat treatment, the effects of ripening period (1-13 days), nitrite level (45-195 ppm), and heat treatment (30-$90^{\circ}C$) on lipolysis, peroxide, TBA, proteolysis, and residual nitrite values of sucuk were investigated using response surface methodology. The ripening period significantly (p<0.01) increased lipolysis, peroxide, TBA, and proteolysis values and decreased residual nitrite values. The effects of additional nitrite levels were found to significantly affect peroxide and residual nitrite values. Significant amounts of the additional nitrite levels were reduced during processing and on the first day of ripening periods.

        Use of UVP to Investigate the Evolution of Bed Configuration

        Ultrasonic Velocity Profiler (UVP) is a widely used instrument which allows the determination of the complete velocity profile. UVP can also measure the echo amplitude in the mean time. In this study, it is intended to use the UVP transducers in an indirect way to detect the bottom surface by orienting them vertically downward. Preliminary experiments were conducted with immobile bed by using uniform, non-uniform sediment as well as wooden and plastic surface. It was appeared that the first remarkable peak corresponds to the bottom surface. The time variations of local bed elevations were registered by applying this technique in order to determine the erosion and deposition around a bridge pier and local scour around a horizontal submerged pipe. It was revealed that the so registered scour depths were in good agreement with those observed during the experiments. Consequently, it is demonstrated that time varied bed elevations can be measured via the first peak value of echo amplitudes by placing UVP transducers vertically.

        Frictionless contact problem for a layer on an elastic half plane loaded by means of two dissimilar rigid punches

        The contact problem for an elastic layer resting on an elastic half plane is considered according to the theory of elasticity with integral transformation technique. External loads P and Q are transmitted to the layer by means of two dissimilar rigid flat punches. Widths of punches are different and the thickness of the layer is h. All surfaces are frictionless and it is assumed that the layer is subjected to uniform vertical body force due to effect of gravity. The contact along the interface between elastic layer and half plane will be continuous, if the value of load factor, λ, is less than a critical value, λcr. However, if tensile tractions are not allowed on the interface, for λ > λcr the layer separates from the interface along a certain finite region. First the continuous contact problem is reduced to singular integral equations and solved numerically using appropriate Gauss-Chebyshev integration formulas. Initial separation loads, λcr , initial separation points, xcr, are determined. Also the required distance between the punches to avoid any separation between the punches and the layer is studied and the limit distance between punches that ends interaction of punches, is investigated. Then discontinuous contact problem is formulated in terms of singular integral equations. The numerical results for initial and end points of the separation region, displacements of the region and the contact stress distribution along the interface between elastic layer and half plane is determined for various dimensionless quantities.

        The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Adolescents with Asthma

        Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting people at any age and there is limited information about the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on quality of life (QoL) in adolescents with asthma. In the present study, it was aimed to assess the attitudes of adolescents with asthma toward the COVID-19 pandemic and determine the effects of the pandemic on their QoL. Methods: In total, 125 adolescents with asthma and 98 healthy adolescents participated in the present study. The questionnaire form consisted of three parts. In the first part, all the participants were asked whether they complied with the protective measures against COVID-19. The second part included questions for measuring the participants’ level of concern about COVID-19, while the third part consisted of EUROHIS-QOL 8. Results: The patient and control groups were similar in terms of the female/male ratio (55/70 and 48/50, respectively) and mean participant age (14.6 ± 2 and 15.1 ± 1.65 years, respectively) (P = 0.459 and P = 0.062, respectively). The prevalence of COVID-19 in the patients (n = 2, 1.6%) was lower than that in the controls (n = 6, 6.1%); however, the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.142). The total EUROHIS-QOL score was significantly lower in the patients (31.2 ± 6.7) than in the controls (33.7 ± 4.4) (P < 0.001). The total QoL scores of asthmatic adolescents without other allergic disease (31.4 ± 6.7) was also lower than those of the controls (33.7 ± 4.4) (P = 0.009). Treatment disruption was significantly more common in patients who received subcutaneous immunotherapy (n = 20, 48.8%) than in those who did not (n = 8, 9.5%) (P < 0.001). Moreover, the patients had lower EUROHIS-QOL scores in the overall QoL, general health, finance, and home domains. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the mean QoL score of asthmatic adolescents during COVID-19 pandemic is lower than in the healthy population. Disruption in their treatment was most common in patients with asthma who were receiving subcutaneous immunotherapy.
