Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of electroacupuncture on heat sensation of the feet of a 61-year-old female patient with restless leg syndrome. Methods: Electroacupuncture was performed at four acupoints (KI3 (太谿), KI6 (照海), LR3 (太衝), LR2 (行間)) selected to reduce heat sensation in both feet. The patient's symptoms were assessed using the VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), the SF-MPQ (short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire), and the IRLS (International Restless Legs Scale). The treatment was performed from April 20, 2010 to April 24, 2010. Results: During five sessions of electroacupuncture treatments, the VAS, SF-MPQ, and IRLS scores improved throughout the treatment period and afterwards. Conclusions: The results suggest that electroacupuncture at KI3(太谿), KI6(照海), LR3(太衝), LR2(行間) can be effective for reducing hot flush in both feet.
A New Black Seed Cost Soybean Cultivar, "Heugmi" with Lodging Tolerance and Green Cotyledon

A new black seed coat soybean cultivar, “Heugmi” was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2006. The goal to breed the black seed coat soybean is to develop the cultivar with high yield, lodging tolerance, resistant to disease such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV), and bacterial pustule and seed size. Heugmi was selected from the cross between Milyang 78, which was late maturing, susceptible to lodging and SMV and with large seed size and green cotyledon, and Milyang 68, which was middle maturing, resistant to lodging and SMV and with middle seed size and yellow cotyledon. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection of this cultivar were carried out from 2001 to 2006. It has determinate growth habit, purple flower, brown pubescence, black pod color, black seed coat, green cotyledon, spherical seed shape, oval leaf shape and middle seed size (24.8 grams per 100 seeds), and it was 2 days earlier in maturity than the check cultivar Cheongjakong. Heugmi was better in the seed quality of crude protein contents, sucrose and total sugar contents than the check cultivar. It also has been identified to have resistance to SMV which was the troublesome soybean diseases. The average yield of Heugmi was 2.53 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials carried out in seven locations of Korea from 2004 to 2006, which was 8 percent higher than the check cultivar Cheongjakong.
Strategic Application and Adoption of Information Systems: Case Studies of Korean Companies

Korea has shown a tremendous leap in economic development in a short span of time, and the world is watching Korea's economy with keen interest. Development of industries that are implementing information systems (IS) has played a role in leading economic growth in Korea. Because of the success of Korean firms, the creation of case studies for implementing IS in Korean firms was attempted. Despite the many case studies, analysis of the motivations and results, for implementing IS as a firm's strategic purpose, was rarely conducted. Therefore, this paper investigates some Korean firms' cases studies in order to show the best practice example of implementing and adopting IS strategically. Nine cases of Korean firms' strategic use of IS were analyzed in various industry fields. Each case consists of the following four categories: company overview, background implementing IS, adoption of IS for strategic purpose, and the results of implementing IS. In order to help various companies to take an action with their IS implementation and its strategic use, implications from the cases are summarized to show how Korean firms strategically introduced IS for solving particular problems that they had faced.

We examined the effect of the subcutaneous (s.c.) pretreatment of formalin into both hind paws of mice on the antinociception induced by the intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) or intrathecally (i.t.) administration of β-endorphin using the tail-flick test. Pretreatment with formalin (5%) for 5 h had no affect on the i.c.v. administered β-endorphin-induced tail-flick response. However, pretreatment with formalin for 40 h attenuated the tail-flick inhibition induced by i.c.v. administered β-endorphin. This antinociceptive tolerance to i.c.v. β-endorphin continued up to 1 week, but to a lesser extent. Pretreatment with formalin for 5 and 40 h significantly reduced the i.t. β-endorphin-induced inhibition of the tail-flick response, which continued up to 1 week. The s.c. formalin treatment increased the hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) mRNA level at 2 h, but this returned to the basal level after 40 h. Our results suggest that the increase in the POMC mRNA level in the hypothalamus appears to be involved in the supraspinal or spinal β-endorphin-induced antinociceptive tolerance in formalin-induced inflammatory pain.

<P>The utilization of p-p isotype heterojunctions is an effective strategy to enhance the gas sensing properties of metal-oxide semiconductors, but most previous studies focused on p-n heterojunctions owing to their simple mechanism of formation of depletion layers. However, a proper choice of isotype semiconductors with appropriate energy bands can also contribute to the enhancement of the gas sensing performance. Herein, we report nickel oxide (NiO)-decorated cobalt oxide (Co<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>) nanorods (NRs) fabricated using the multiple-step glancing angle deposition method. The effective decoration of NiO on the entire surface of Co<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> NRs enabled the formation of numerous p-p heterojunctions, and they exhibited a 16.78 times higher gas response to 50 ppm of C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>6</SUB> at 350 °C compared to that of bare Co<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> NRs with the calculated detection limit of approximately 13.91 ppb. Apart from the p-p heterojunctions, increased active sites owing to the changes in the orientation of the exposed lattice surface and the catalytic effects of NiO also contributed to the enhanced gas sensing properties. The advantages of p-p heterojunctions for gas sensing applications demonstrated in this work will provide a new perspective of heterostructured metal-oxide nanostructures for sensitive and selective gas sensing.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

This study was designed 1) to develop a hypertensive animal model in which the blood pressures (BPs) of symmetric regions (right and left upper extremities) are significantly different and 2) to test the effect of BP per se on the contractility and endothelium-dependent relaxation of vascular smooth muscle. Rabbits were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital and ventilated with room air via animal respirator. The transverse aorta was exposed through the left second intercostal space and the lumen of the aorta was narrowed partially by ligation using 3-0 silk and a probe at a point between the origins of the brachiocephalic trunk and the left subclavian artery. Four to eight weeks postoperatively, BPs were measured in the carotid artery as the high BP area (proximal to coactation site) and in the femoral artery as the low BP area (distal to coarctation site). In the animal model, pressure-overload hypertension was developed and the BP of the right subclavian artery was higher than that of the left subclavian artery. The concentrations of circulating epinephrine, norepinephrine, angiotensin I, and angiotensin II were measured. The right and left subclavian arteries and their branches were used for isometric tension recording in organ baths and their responsiveness to phenylephrine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and sodium nitroprusside were examined. The BPs of carotid and femoral artery in control animals were 116± 12/75±9 mmHg (mean ±SEM) and 130±16/68±9 mmHg respectively, while those of carotid and femoral artery in the hypetensive animals were 172±6/111±10 mmHg and 136± 4/100 ±9 mmHg respectively. There were no significant differences in the concentrations of circulating epinephrine, norepinephrine, angiotensin I, and angiotensin II between controls and the animal models. No significant differences were found in the vascular sensitivities to phenylephrine and serotonin between the high pressure-exposed vessels and the low pressure-exposed vessels. However, the endothelium-dependent relaxation to acetylcholine and nitroprusside-induced relaxation showed significant differences between the high pressure-exposed and the low pressure-exposed subclavian arteries. From the above results, we suggest that the contractility of vascular smooth muscle is unchanged by the elevated pressure per se. However, the endothelium-dependent relaxation to acetylcholine and the nitroprusside-induced relaxation are attenuated by pressure.
