        Angiogenesis-Targeted 68Ga-DOTA-RGD2 PET/CT Imaging: a Potential Theranostic Application in the Case of Chondrosarcoma

        Chondrosarcoma is a cartilaginous tumor of mesenchymal origin. The histology and grade of the tumor determine the chances of relapse and survival. These tumors usually respond poorly to chemo-radiotherapy in cases of non-resectable and recurrent disease. 18F-FDG PET/CT has been used in evaluation of recurrence. However, these tumors show only mild to moderate FDG avidity due to their lower mitotic activity and large acellular matrix. These tumors are known to have a high degree of angiogenesis, especially in those of higher grade. We present a case of a 53-year-old man with grade II chondrosarcoma of the left femur showing only mild avidity on 18F-FDG PET/CT but showing moderate to intense tracer avidity on 68Ga-DOTA-RGD2 PET/CT. This may enable the use of angiogenesis-targeted positron and beta-emitting radiopharmaceuticals as a potentially new theranostic alternative treatment in cases of refractory metastatic chondrosarcoma.

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Layer-by-layer approach for NiS, CoS and PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate) is being fabricated. Metal sulfides have always been chosen for their remarkable electrochemical characteristics and wide beneficial domains, such as electrochemical energy conversion and storage. This work presents the preparation of cost-effective metal sulfides (NiS, NiS/CoS, NiS/CoS/PEDOT:PSS) developed on nickel foam sheets for supercapacitor (SC) applications. The assembled NiS/CoS/PEDOT:PSS array SC device exhibits an utmost energy density of 30.3 W h kg<SUP>−1</SUP> and specific capacitance of 353 F g<SUP>−1</SUP>. All wet processing methods of fabrication accompanied with superior performance characteristics make these SCs very attractive for the next generation flexible energy storage systems.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> NiS/CoS/PEDOT:PSS on nickel foam is coated by Chemical Bath Deposition method. </LI> <LI> Metal sulfides extend active area due to low electronegativity of sulfur over oxygen. </LI> <LI> PEDOT:PSS on NiS/CoS is coated to increase surface area and conductivity. </LI> <LI> NiS/CoS/PEDOT:PSS showed maximal specific capacitance of 353 F g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 15 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Korean Traditional Fermented Foods - A Potential Resource of Beneficial Microorganisms and Their Applications

        본 논문은 프로바이오틱 세균의 잠재적 기원으로서의 중요성으로 한국 발효식품의 다양성을 살펴보았다. 한국에서 소비되고 있는 발표식품들은 여러 물질들을 기반으로 나눌 수 있다. 김치, 메주, 된장, 간장, 젓갈, 막걸리와 같은 발표식품은 중요한 약리적인 성질들을 가진 것으로 보고되고 있다. 이러한 발효 식품들은 지역 주민들에게 규칙적으로 소비되고 있으며, 이들 발효식품들은 Weissella spp., Lactobacillus spp., Leuconostoc spp., Mucor, Penicillium, Scopulariopsis, Aspergillus, Rhodotorula, Candida, Saccharomyces, Bacillus와 유산균을 포함한 다양한 유익미생물을 기반으로 만들어 진다. 발효식품들은 음식으로서의 이용가치의 경계를 넘어서 약리적인 식품으로써 뿐만 아니라 기능적인 면에서까지 높아지고 있다. 이러한 발효식품은 잠재적 항산화, 항암, 항콜레스테롤, 항당뇨, 항노화의 물질이 풍부한 기원으로 여기고 있다. 전반적으로 전통발효 식품은 식품공급원뿐만 아니라 인간 건강을 높여주는 특성을 가지고 있다. 여러 다양한 발효식품이 식이에 대한 효과가 과학적 보고들이 많이 출판되었고 전통발효식품이 건강에 유익하다는 것에 대한 인식이 증가되고 있다. 이러한 영역에서 현재 많은 보고서가 있다. 식품미생물학자가 이용할 수 있는 충분한 기회를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 발효식품의 탐험과 신종균주의 분리, 미생물연구에 잠재적 응용가치를 높일 수 있다. This review describes the diversity of Korean fermented foods and their significance as potential sources of probiotic bacteria. Fermented foods consumed in Korea are categorized according to their base material. Fermented foods such as kimchi, meju, doenjang, kangjang, jeotgal, and makgeolli are reported to have significant medicinal properties. These fermented products, which are consumed regularly by local people, are rich sources of beneficial microbes represented by several genera, including Weissella spp., Lactobacillus spp., Leuconostoc spp., Mucor, Penicillium, Scopulariopsis, Aspergillus, Rhodotorula, Candida, Saccharomyces, and Bacillus, as well as lactic acid bacteria. Fermented foods are now taken beyond the boundaries of their use as mere side dishes and are used significantly as a functional as well as medicinal foods. Fermented foods are a rich source of potential natural substances with antioxidant, anticancer, anticholesteric, antiobesitic, and antiaging properties, so that traditional fermented foods used as food supplements can impart health benefits. Publication of scientific studies on the dietary benefits of various fermented foods and growing consciousness about the potential health benefits of traditional fermented food are reflected in the scores of reports currently available in this field. Food microbiologists now have abundant opportunities to explore Korean traditional fermented foods for the isolation of new bacterial strains and to evaluate the potential applications of these strains through microbiological research.

        Identification of N-arylsulfonylpyrimidones as anticancer agents

        For confirming the role of five membered ring of imidazolidinone moiety of N-arylsulfonylimidazolidinones (7) previously reported with highly potent anticancer agent, a series of N-arylsulfonylpyrimidones (10a-g) and N-arylsulfonyltetrahydropyrimidones (11a-e) were prepared and their anti-proliferating activity was measured against human cancer cell lines (renal ACHN, colon HCT-15, breast MDA-MB-231, lung NCI-H23, stomach NUGC-3, and prostate PC-3) using XTT assay. Among them, 1-(1-acetylindolin-5-ylsulfonyl)-4-phenyltetrahydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one (11d, mean <TEX>$GI_{50}=3.50{\mu}M$</TEX>) and ethyl 5-(2-oxo-4-phenyltetrahydropyrimidin-1(2H)-ylsulfonyl)-indoline-1-carboxylate (11e, mean <TEX>$GI_{50}=0.26{\mu}M$</TEX>) showed best growth inhibitory activity against human cancer cell lines. Considering the activity results, N-arylsulfonyltetrahydropyrimidones (11) exhibited more potent activity compared to N-arylsulfonylpyrimidones (10) and comparable activity to N-arylsulfonylimidazolidinones (7). Especially, tetrahydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one analogs containing acylindolin-5-ylsulfonyl moiety at position 1 demonstrated their strong growth inhibitory activity against human cancer cell lines.

        Nanospheres and nanorods structured Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> and Fe<sub>2-x</sub>Ga<sub>x</sub>O<sub>3</sub> photocatalysts for visible-light mediated (λ>=420nm) H<sub>2</sub>S decomposition and H<sub>2</sub> generation

        This article reports our investigation on H<SUB>2</SUB> generation from visible light (λ>=420nm) photodecomposition of H<SUB>2</SUB>S by nanomaterial catalysts, α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> and its chemically modified Fe<SUB>2-x</SUB>Ga<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> (Ga substitution at x=0.6, FeGaO<SUB>3</SUB>-I and x=1.0, FeGaO<SUB>3</SUB>-II). Simple template-free hydrothermal technique was employed to synthesize the three photocatalysts. XRD study reveals rhombohedral nanocrystalline structure and FESEM shows nanospheres morphology for Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> and nanosticks/nanorods for both FeGaO<SUB>3</SUB>-I, and FeGaO<SUB>3</SUB>-II. In H<SUB>2</SUB> generation, Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> and FeGaO<SUB>3</SUB>-II perform moderate and almost same activities in the fresh and used conditions (quantum yield, QY=6.0-6.8% at 550nm). Contrarily, fresh FeGaO<SUB>3</SUB>-I exhibits a greater activity (11.2% QY) and the activity is further enhanced (QY=15.3%) on regeneration and reuse. The intricacy, as resolved by XRD and FESEM, appears to take place through morphology transformation. The present work, thus, successfully demonstrates H<SUB>2</SUB> generation from H<SUB>2</SUB>S by nanostructured photocatalysts involving morphology dependent activity enhancement.

      • Isolation, Characterization, Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Effect of Marine Actinomycete, Streptomyces Carpaticus MK-01, against Fish Pathogens

        <P>Present study aim to evaluate the antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic potential of crude extract of Marine Streptomyces carpaticus MK-01 isolated from seawater collected from Daejeong-cost of Jeju Island. About 24 actinomycetes strains were isolated and subjected to morphological and molecular analysis that confirmed the isolate as S. carpaticus MK-01. Crude ethyl acetate extract of MK-01 strain showed extensive antibacterial activity against Gram-positive fish pathogenic bacteria namely Streptococcus iniae and S. parauberis with a maximum zone of inhibition (0.92 +/- 0.03mm) was recorded against S. parauberis at the minimum extract concentration (3.12 mu g/ml). The MK-01 ethyl acetate extract shows dose dependant significant increase in antioxidant activity. The 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) of MK-01 ethyl acetate extract was attained at 53.71 mu g/ml and the effective concentration 50 (EC50) against virus-infected Epithelioma papulosum cyprini cell lines was 8.72 mu g/ml of S. carpaticus MK-01 crude ethyl acetate extract.</P>

        THE ORIGIN OF LARGE SCALE GALACTIC MAGNETIC FIELDS

        Magnetic fields correlated on several kiloparsec scales are seen in spiral galaxies. Their origin could be due to the winding up of a primordial cosmological field or due to amplification of a small seed field by a turbulent galactic dynamo. Both options have difficulties: There is no known battery mechanism for producing the required primordial field. Equally the turbulent dynamo may self destruct before being able to produce the large scale field, due to excess generation of small scale power. The current status of these difficulties is discussed. The resolution could depend on the nature of the saturated field produced by the small scale dynamo. We argue that the small scale fields do not fill most of the volume of the fluid and instead concentrate into intermittent ropes, with their peak value of order equipartition fields, and radii much smaller than their lengths. In this case these fields neither drain significant energy from the turbulence nor convert eddy motion of the turbulence on the outer scale to wave like motion. This preserves the diffusive effects needed for the large scale dynamo operation.

        State of the Art in Liquid Crystals Nanophysiochemical Properties at Surfaces and Interfaces, and Frontier for Posterity

        Liquid crystals (LC) have been drastically protracted in recent years, due to the ferret out of novel nanophysiochemical properties at surfaces. Physiochemical characteristics, such as weak intermolecular forces manifested like odd-even effect, hydrogen bonding, and electric double layers make them ideal for variety of applications. Furthermore, the orientation of LC exploits the conventional and novel detectionmethod for protein binding event on nanostructured surfaces and protein crystallization on lipid monolayers. These explorations include the detection of parts per billion (ppb) chemical warfare agents on surfaces as well as new mechanisms for driving the orientation of liquid crystals. The scope of the present review attempts the recent progress on using LC to amplify a wide range of engineered surface chemistry progressed from liquid-solid and liquid-aqueous interfaces. The distinct features of LC role in imaging and biosensing have been discussed. From these studies, it is clear that the LC has the enormous potential as a promising material for the biomedical applications.
