        산업단지 및 일반생활 지역의 공기 중 톨루엔에 대한 개인노출 및 생체시료의 상관성 분석

        Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation relationship between personal exposure and urinary hippuric acid in biological monitoring for airborne toluene in an industrial complex and in general environments. Methods: Personal exposure to toluene and its metabolite, hippuric acid, in urine were simultaneously measured in occupational environments area near an industrial complex and in general environments. The study subjects were divided into three types: 137 workers who use organic solvents in the workplace, 210 residents living near a dyeing industrial complex, and 379 residents living in general environments. The toluene exposures of workers and residents were measured by a passive sampler for four days. The urine of participants was sampled when the passive samplers of personal exposure were collected. Results: The toluene and hippuric acid concentrations of workers were the highest, followed by the concentrations of residents living near a dyeing industrial complex and residents living in general environments. The coefficient of correlation between the concentrations of toluene and hippuric acid among workers was 0.749 (p<0.01) in the workplace. On the contrary, correlations between the concentrations of toluene and hippuric acid among residents living near a dyeing industrial complex and residents living in general environments were all not significant. The relationship between the concentrations of hippuric acid and toluene in three types could be described by the exponential growth model. Conclusions: This study analyzed the relationships between toluene exposure and the concentrations of hippuric acid in urine in high, middle, and low exposure environments, and could be described by the exponential growth model.

        맥문동 물 추출물의 식이가 Streptozotocin으로 유도한 당뇨 흰쥐의 혈당과 혈청 콜레스테롤 함량에 미치는 영향

        The dietary effect of water extracts of Liriopis tuber(WELT) in the diabetic SD-rats on the level of blood sugar and serum cholesterol was investigated. The experimental plots divided into normal group(N), diabetic control(DC), 5% WELT-group(WELT-Ⅰ) and 10% WELT-group (WELT-Ⅱ). Each group was fed for 6 weeks, then continuously fed for 1 more week after streptozotocin injection. The loss of the body weight fed for one week after induction of the diabetes was 2.2~6.3% in the WELT-Ⅰ and -Ⅱ groups, but it was 18.6% in the DC-group. There was no significant difference in the feed intakes after diabetes induction between N-group and WELT-group, while it was significantly increased in DC-group. The feed efficiency ratios before diabetes induction were 1.70 in WELT-Ⅰgroup, 1.53~1.59 in the N, DC and WELT-Ⅱ group, while the ratios after diabetes induction were 0.92 in DC-group, 1.51~1.83 in the N, WELT-Ⅰ and -Ⅱ group. While the amounts of water intakes for one week after diabetes induction was 625.4 mL in the DC-group, and it were 364.3~371.1 mL in the WELT-groups showing no significant difference with N-group. The excretion amounts of urine were 431.96 mL in DC-group for one week after diabetes induction, and it was 182~192.84 mL in WELT-groups. The ratios of liver weight against body weight were 2.74% in N-group, 2.93~2.96% in WELT-groups, but it was 4.01% in DC-group. The level of blood glucose in WELT-groups fed for one week after diabetes induction were 136.8~138.6 ㎎/dL showing no significant difference with N-group, but it was 357.8 ㎎/dL in DC-group. The level of serum triacylglycerol and serum total cholesterol were 93.8 and 68.7 ㎎/dL in N-group, 120.1 and 101.6 ㎎/dL in DC-group, 97.4~100.6 and 60.8~67.7 ㎎/dL in WELT-groups, respectively, showing no significant difference between N-group and WELT-groups. HDL-cholesterolltotal cholesterol ratio were 0.63 in N-group, 0.57~0.67 in WELT-groups, which was significantly higher than that of DC-group(p<0.05). Atherogenic index were 0.58 in N-group, 0.49~0.74 in WELT-groups, but it was 1.32 in DC-group. The above results suggest that the WELT diets may have both preventive and curing effects against the diabetes.

        A dress style of ceratin country has a close relationship with a culture. It develops and changes continuously according to the social environment such as politics, economy, religion and social system. Thus, we can say that a dress style intensively shows the culture of the country. Covering outfit, which was used for female had developed under the circumstance of Confucianism. In Chosun Dynasty, there was a concept of distinction between sexes, whose ideology was Confucianism. Woman must wear Covering outfit when she goes out. Since Covering outfit had been disappeared after the civilization, it would be one of the dress style which was extremely influenced by the change of the social system. Chosun Dynasty was established based on the social system and ideology of Korea Dynasty. Zu-Ja Hak induced at the last period Korea Dynasty influenced the Chosun's Confucianism which penetrated people's life and thinking. By the compulsory request of the social system, women had to wear Covering outfit to hide face. According to the social position and the class, the usage extent of Covering outfit was different. It could be meaningful to arrange types and the basic structure of Covering outfit in Chosun Dynasty and to rediscover peculiar beauty of Korean culture. This research has performed based on the existing remains and records. We hope it can be helpful to make people understand what is Covering outfit and precise theory will be established by discovering historical records regarding 'Chun-ui' and 'Covering Skirt'.

      • 대학생의 전공에 따른 유행 동조성, 혁신성, 의복가치 차이에 관한 연구

        A change in economic and social environment has brought lots of changes in lifestyles and values of onsumers. This paper presents fashion conformity, innovativeness and clothing values of college students according to their academic majors. Respondents were 181 undergraduate students with diverse majors. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire designed to measure fashion conformity, innvativeness and utilitarian/hedonic clothing values. Seventeen items measuring fashion conformity and innovativeness and thirty six items measuring clothing values were adopted from existing studies. Chi-square, ANOVA, and multiple comparisons of means were conducted. Students were clustered into three groups of majors: Engineering/NaturalScience/Information majors (ENI), Business/Social/Humanity (BSH) majors and HumanEcology/Art/PhysicalEducation (HAP) majors. HAP majors were more innovative than ENI majors. Significant differences were found in hedonic and utilitarian aspects of clothing values. HAP majors had higher level of novelty/fun/attraction, fashion consciousness and social appraisal sensitivity dimensions. ENI majors showed higher level of comfort seeking among clothing values. No significance was found in clothing confidence, mix and match, economy, utility and handling dimensions of clothing values across different groups of majors. Results of this study imply that the consumer group according to a major has relation to fashion conformity, innovativeness and clothing values.

        Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

        Identification of intracerebral hematoma using ultrasonography in a dog

        A 3-month-old male Maltese dog was presented with generalized trembling, ataxia, and seizure.The patient had traumatic injury on history takings. Physical examination revealed dome shaped craniumwith open fontanelle, nasal hemorrhage, and blepharoedema with hemorhage on the left side. On serumbiochemical profiles, creatine phosphokinase was severely elevated. There was no remarkable findingon radiography. Ultrasound images of brain were obtained via a persistence bregmatic fontanelle, andbilateraly dilated lateral ventricles with a hyperechoic mass on the left temporal lobe were detected.Based on clinical signs, history, physical examination, laboratory findings, and ultrasonographic findings,we suspected this intracranial mass to intracerebral hematoma induced by head trauma. Methylprednisoloneh after initial diagnosis. We performed necropsy and confirmed intracerebral hematoma. This case reportdescribes the identification of intracerebral hematoma using ultrasonography.

        A report of 35 unrecorded bacterial species belonging to the classes Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria in Korea

        During a comprehensive investigation of indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, 25 and 10 bacterial strains assigned to the classes Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria, respectively, were isolated from diverse environmental habitats, including soil, mud, tidal field, sea water, sand, rusted iron, and leaf. Based on their high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (>98.7%) and the formation of robust phylogenetic clades with type species, each strain was assigned to an independent and predefined bacterial species. Since there were no published or official reports regarding these 35 isolates in Korea, they - 25 species of 14 families in the 5 orders of Alphaproteobacteria and 10 species of 3 families in the two orders of Betaproteobacteria - have been reported as unrecorded species in Korea. In addition, Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristic, isolation source, and strain ID of each species are also described in the species description sections.

        Effect of microgrooves and fibronectin conjugation on the osteoblast marker gene expression and differentiation

        PURPOSE. To determine the effect of fibronectin (FN)-conjugated, microgrooved titanium (Ti) on osteoblast differentiation and gene expression in human bone marrow−derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Photolithography was used to fabricate the microgrooved Ti, and amine functionalization (silanization) was used to immobilize fibronectin on the titanium surfaces. Osteoblast differentiation and osteoblast marker gene expression were analyzed by means of alkaline phosphatase activity assay, extracellular calcium deposition assay, and quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS. The conjugation of fibronectin on Ti significantly increased osteoblast differentiation in MSCs compared with non-conjugated Ti substrates. On the extracellular calcium deposition assays of MSCs at 21 days, an approximately two-fold increase in calcium concentration was observed on the etched 60-μm-wide/10-μm-deep microgrooved surface with fibronectin (E60/10FN) compared with the same surface without fibronectin (E60/10), and a more than fourfoldincrease in calcium concentration was observed on E60/10FN compared with the non-etched control (NE0) and etched control (E0) surfaces. Through a series of analyses to determine the expression of osteoblast marker genes, a significant increase in all the marker genes except type I collagen α1 mRNA was seen with E60/10FN more than with any of the other groups, as compared with NE0. CONCLUSION. The FN-conjugated, microgrooved Ti substrate can provide an effective surface to promote osteoblast differentiation and osteoblast marker gene expression in MSCs.

        Characterization of Hagfish (<i>Eptatretus burgeri</i>) Variable Lymphocyte Receptor–Based Antibody and Its Potential Role in the Neutralization of Nervous Necrosis Virus

        <P><B>Key Points</B></P><P><OL><LI>NNV-specific VLRBs were developed using a library screening system.</LI><LI>The binding ability of this Ab was enhanced through modular engineering.</LI><LI>VLRB could be an alternative neutralizing Ab against Betanodavirus infection.</LI></OL></P><P>The variable lymphocyte receptor (VLR) mediates the humoral immune response in jawless vertebrates, including lamprey (<I>Petromyzon marinus</I>) and hagfish (<I>Eptatretus burgeri</I>). Hagfish VLRBs are composed of leucine-rich repeat (LRR) modules, conjugated with a superhydrophobic C-terminal tail, which contributes to low levels of expression in recombinant protein technology. In this study, we screened Ag-specific VLRBs from hagfish immunized with nervous necrosis virus (NNV). The artificially multimerized form of VLRB was constructed using a mammalian expression system. To enhance the level of expression of the Ag-specific VLRB, mutagenesis of the VLRB was achieved in vitro through domain swapping of the LRR C-terminal cap and variable LRR module. The mutant VLRB obtained, with high expression and secretion levels, was able to specifically recognize purified and progeny NNV, and the Ag binding ability of this mutant was increased by at least 250-fold to that of the nonmutant VLRB. Furthermore, preincubation of the Ag-specific VLRB with NNV reduced the infectivity of NNV in E11 cells in vitro, and in vivo experiment. Our results suggest that the newly developed Ag-specific VLRB has the potential to be used as diagnostic and therapeutic reagents for NNV infections in fish.</P>

        During a comprehensive investigation of indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, a total of 46 bacterial strains assigned to the classes Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, and Epsilonproteobacteria were isolated from a diversity of habitats including freshwater, seawater, brackish water, ginseng soil, plant roots, natural caves, and tidal flats. Based on their high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (>98.7%) and formation of strongly-supported phylogenetic clades with the closest type species, each strain was assigned to an independent, predefined bacterial species. Since there were no published or official reports regarding the isolation of these 46 species in Korea, here we report them as new species to Korea: 34 species in 14 families in the five orders of Alphaproteobacteria, 10 species in five families in the three orders of Betaproteobacteria, one species of Deltaproteobacteria and one species of Epsilonproteobacteria. Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and strain IDs are described in the species description section.
