Linguistic and Cultural Limits of Manchu Poetry in Comparison with Chinese

In recent times, the study of Manchu autochthonous poetry brought to light its highly developed verse-technique based on the particularities of the Manchu language and the Manchus’ own culture. In the case of Manchu-Chinese parallel compositions or Manchu translations of Chinese poems, however, the possibilities to express in inadequate way the refinements of Chinese compositions appear sometimes rather limited. Especially in the case of Chinese technical terms or allusions to Chinese culture, the Manchus had two possibilities: to transcribe the Chinese terms or to render them in a more simple way, in order to make them comprehensible to the “common” Manchu reader. In this paper, some examples are discussed to show this way of rendering typical Chinese expressions in Manchu poetical compositions.

It is well-known that one of the keys which accounts for the Jesuits' success at the Manchu court was their good knowledge of the Manchu language. The Kangxi Emperor gave preference to his native tongue when discussing Western science and techniques, and wanted some works directly translated into Manchu, avoiding the mediation of the Chinese language. The most famous examples are offered by the translation of Euclid's "Elements" and of a French book on European anatomy commissioned to the French Jesuit Dominique Parrenin (1665-1741, in China from 1698). As Parrenin himselfs tells us, from time to time he had to bring his Manchu translation to the Emperor, who discussed and corrected it also from a linguistic point of view. Some of these corrections seem to be mentioned in the copy Parrenin sent to Paris, and which is now kept at the Musee d'histoire naturelle. From these examples, we may appreciate the level of Parrenin's knowledge of Manchu and also detect his most common mistakes, which were typical for a European of the 18th century living at the Manchu court.

An analysis of Lysiphlebus Foerster species reared from various field-collected aphid species determined the presence of probably trans-palearctic L. fabarum (Marsh.), L. testaceipes (Cress.) which is an accidentally introduced and established immigrant from North America, and L. koraiensis Stary sp. n., a native species of presumably broader distribution. Both parthenogenetic and biparental populations of L. fabarum were identified in Korea.

This article describes the potential application of missileguidance systems used in surface-to-air (S/A) missiles for landingunmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the mini rotary wing category. For these modification purposes the line of sight laser beam riding(LOSLBR) system is currently being considered. To allow forUAV tracking from a ground-based tracking and guidance station(GBTGS), an optoelectronic automated tracking system that operatesin the visible spectrum of light has been designed. Likewise,the parameters and capacity limits of the individual parts of theseaspects are defined and verified, depending on the type of the flyingobject being observed and guided. In terms of monitoring, the opticalpath transmission parameters such as the type of optical sensor,lens parameters, throughput and speed of the interface, type ofcompression, and attributes of the machine vision algorithms are investigated.

Lysiphlebia japonica (Ashm.) was determined as a dominant and a keystone aphid parasitoid in the ecosystems and agro-ecosystems of Korea. Host range of the parasitoid is reviewed on grounds of original and published records and it is discussed in relation to integrated pest management.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) distraction is a nonpharmacological method to prevent acute pain that has not yet been thoroughly explored for anesthesiology. We present our experience using VR distraction to decrease routine intravenous sedation for patients undergoing preoperative perineural catheter insertion. Methods: This 1-month quality improvement project involved all elective unilateral primary total knee arthroplasty patients who received a preoperative adductor canal catheter. Clinical data were analyzed retrospectively. For the first half of the month, all patients received usual care; intravenous sedation was administered at the discretion of the regional anesthesiologist. For the second half of the month, patients were offered VR distraction with intravenous sedation upon request. The primary outcome was fentanyl dosage; other outcomes included midazolam dosage, procedure-related pain, procedural time, and blood pressure changes. Results: Seven patients received usual care and seven used VR. In the VR group, 1/7 received intravenous sedation versus 6/7 who received usual care (P = 0.029). The fentanyl dose was lower (median [10th–90th percentiles]) in the VR group (0 [0–20] μg) versus the non-VR group (50 [30–100] μg; P = 0.008). Midazolam use was lower in the VR group (0 [0–0] mg) than in the non-VR group (1 [0–1] mg; P = 0.024). Procedure-related pain was lower in the VR group (1 [1–4] NRS) versus the non-VR group (3 [2–6] NRS; P = 0.032). There was no difference in other outcomes. Conclusions: VR distraction may provide an effective nonpharmacological alternative to intravenous sedation for the ultrasound-guided placement of certain perineural catheters.
