        The Visual, Under the Challenges of Contemporary Science

      • Pay Communication and Job Satisfaction

        기업은 변화하는 환경 속에서 경쟁력을 지속적으로 유지하고자 노력을 가속하고 있다. 기업의 경쟁력은 다양한 요소에 의해 형성되며, 이 가운데 구성원의 만족은 이를 결정짓는 주요 요소가 된다. 이러한 이유에서 기업의 경영자들은 구성원의 만족과 성과에 대한 동기부여 수준을 제고하기 위한 시도를 지속하고 있다. 보상은 구성원의 동기부여를 높이기 위한 외적 유인요인으로 그 크기뿐만 아니라 결정되는 과정 역시 중요한 의미를 가진다. 특히 보상을 결정하는 과정에서 구성원의 참여와 조직과의 의사소통은 제공되는 보상으로부터 동기유발을 극대화시키기 위한 의미 있는 관리전략으로 활용될 수 있다. 본 연구는 보상을 통한 동기유발 전략으로서 보상관련 의사소통에 초점을 두었다. 선행연구에 바탕을 둔 이론적 분석에 따르면, 보상 의사소통은 기업구성원의 직무만족뿐만 아니라 더 나아가 기업의 가치증대에 긍정적인 효과가 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 선행연구를 바탕으로 구성원들의 지각된 보상 의사소통이 직무만족, 공정성 지각에 긍정적인 영향을 미치리라는 이론적 명제를 제시하였다. 본 연구에서 제시된 각각의 명제는 실증자료를 통해 구체적으로 검증되고 이를 통해 일반화시킬 수 있는 연구결과의 토대로 활용될 것이다. The increasing interest that companies have been showing over recent years in employees and in practices related to their management, especially pay communication. It is important to understand the emotional and behavioral impact of misunderstanding pay systems. The study investigates how employees’ perception about pay communication affects critical attitudes like job satisfaction. The study extends existing research on pay communication, attempting to explain the relationship between perceived pay communication and job satisfaction. A series of propositions has been formulated in this study from the theoretical and empirical literature. It is suggested that an empirical investigation of the effect of pay communication on the firm’s performance is required.

      • Prevalence of Antibiotics in Nectar and Honey in South Tamilnadu, India

        Reverse-Phase High-performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) based technique is one of the most sensitive techniques to detect the antibiotics present in honey. In the southern part of Tamilnadu, India, majority of the farmlands are occupied by plantations such as coconut, banana and rubber. A variety of antimicrobial compounds and antibiotics, which have been reported in pollen, nectar and other floral parts of the plant, gets accumulated in honey through honeybees (Apis mellifera). We have collected the nectar samples from banana (Musa paridasiaca) and rubber (Ficus elastica) flowers and the honey from honey hives of banana and rubber cultivated areas. The extracted nectar and honey samples are subjected to RP-HPLC analysis with authentic antibiotic standards. Nectar and honey samples showed 4-17, 11-29 ${\mu}g/kg$ of streptomycin, 2-29, 3-44 ${\mu}g/kg$ of ampicillin and 17-34, 26-48 ${\mu}g/kg$ of kanamycin respectively.

        Duration Estimate at Completion: Improving Earned Value Management Forecasting Accuracy

        Earned Value Management (EVM) has been established as a project management technique for project monitoring and control. The traditional EVM performs well in forecasting Cost Performance index and other cost metrics. However, in terms of schedule performance, the accuracy of the forecasted schedule metrics through the traditional EVM approach are always questionable. The schedule performance is not measured in time unit but rather in monetary units or uses cost information, which may cause misleading in the interpretation of the EVM schedule metrics. The schedule performance is not accurately forecasted, resulting in underestimating the estimate at completion (t). Even the renowned Earned Schedule also uses cost as a proxy to determine the earned schedule. This paper presents a new EVM tool, Duration estimate at completion (DEAC-model) developed to accurately forecast the time estimate at completion. DEAC-model uses the actual time spent on each activity, either in progress or upon completion, where the Performance is measured in time units. The benefits of DEAC-model to project management team and researchers are that it can be used: 1) to forecast schedule metrics accurately so that resources can be effectively allocated to complete the remaining activities, 2) as a gauge to assess if the project can be completed within the plan schedule, and 3) to apply time series and simple linear regression model concepts using excel worksheet syntax to forecast duration estimate at completion that is easily applicable.

        Biological roles of NAC transcription factors in the regulation of biotic and abiotic stress responses in solanaceous crops

        Evolutionary studies conducted on NAC (NAM, ATAF1&2, and CUC2) genes for all major groups of land plants, indicate the presence of the NAC subfamilies, even in the early land plants. The varied roles played by NAC proteins in plant growth and development range from the formation of shoot apical meristem, floral organ development, reproduction, lateral shoot development, and defense responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Considering the value and importance of solanaceous crops, the study of NAC proteins in these plants needs to be intensified. This will help to identify and functionally characterize their promoters, which will subsequently aid in engineering plants with improved performance under stressful conditions. In this review, the functionally characterized NAC transcription factors specific to tomato, potato, tobacco, chili pepper and eggplant (aubergine) are summarized, clearly indicating their biological functions in the defense mechanism of the plants, against biotic and abiotic stresses.

        Assessment of soil contamination at the central sewage treatment plant, University of Nigeria, Nsukka

        This paper integrated geophysical and geochemical methods to study the pollution of soil at the sewage plant at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The plant has two large stabilization ponds. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) was carried out to determine the depth of plume, and thus evaluate the safety of the underlying water table aquifer. Tracking of plume direction was by the application of horizontal profiling (HP) and induced polarization (IP). Geochemical analysis of 12 soil samples collected at 1 m and 5 m depths from 6 augured holes around the plant were carried out to evaluate the levels of concentration of the pollutants via their pollution indices (geoaccumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI)). Results of the 22 VES shots showed the depth of plume to be about 40 m. Together with VES and aquifer vulnerability mapping techniques a plume migration rate of 0.76 m/yr was evaluated and thus, it would take 144 years to reach the aquifer at average water table depth of 110 m. The HP and IP showed concentrations of plume face towards the northeast of the plant. The total dissolved solids (TDS) and pollution indices were observed to be higher along the direction of migration of the contaminant plume than the other areas. The Igeo and CF show decreasing soil pollution down the profile. The EF showed no variation in enrichment pattern with depth. The pollution load index (PLI) was found to be 1.44 and 1.22 at the depths of 1m and 5m respectively, which indicates that the soil is polluted at both depths, yet less polluted down the profile. However, it may be safe to conclude that the aquifer is safe, considering the travel time and also that the pollution of soil at the site decreases with depth.

        Schedule Risk Analysis using a Proposed Modified Variance and Mean of the Original Program Evaluation and Review Technique Model

        The Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) model uses parameters such as the specified project completion time, mean, and variance to estimate the probability of project completion time. However, this model uses a weighted average and unweighted value in the variance, which is based on six sigma of the mean. Despite many proposed modifications to improve the traditional PERT model, the hidden error in the calculation of the variance and mean of the PERT approach has not been adequately addressed. This error leads to underestimation of the schedule risk. Considering the impact of variance and mean on the probability of project completion times, this study contributes to the improvement of the accuracy of schedule risk estimation by proposing a modified variance and mean of the original PERT model. The original PERT model was first used to estimate the project completion time. However, using the proposed modified model to estimate the completion time, a 95% confidence interval assumption and the corresponding distribution within ±2 standard deviation of the mean and standard or Z values were employed to model the new mean and variance equations. To prove the validity of the proposed modified variance and mean assumptions, we performed a schedule risk analysis through simulation using Oracle Crystal Ball for comparison. The results showed that the proposed PERT model had a better mean error rate of 2.46% as compared to 3.31% of the original PERT model.
