NPI licensing in the INP contexts - Reviving the NOA

The current study aims at providing an account for the licensing of negative polarity items in the so-called INP (inherently negative predicate) contexts. Sohn (1995) claims, following Progovac (1988) and Laka (1990), that there is a negative complementizer or operator in Korean just as in English, Spanish, and Basque and this negative complementizer, selected by an INP, can license an NPI within the embedded clause. Chung (2006) reports that not just an NPI within the embedded clause, but an NPI appearing as a matrix subject can be licensed in the INP context. After showing that this is not explained by Sohn (1995), Chung proposes an alternative analysis - the complex predicate analysis. However, there are also some nontrivial problems in Chung’s analysis as well, and a new analysis is proposed, which can account for the new sets of data as well as old ones. It will be shown that a slightly revised version of Sohn’s negative operator analysis (a new NOA) can advance our understanding of the NPI licensing in the INP contexts. (Hannam University)

CHARACTERISTIC POLYNOMIALS OF SOME WEIGHTED GRAPH BUNDLES AND ITS APPLICATION TO LINKS

In this paper, we introduce weighted graph bundles and study their characteristic polynomial. In particular, we show that the characteristic polynomial of a weighted K_(2) (??_(2)) bundles over a weighted graph Γ_(ω) can be expressed as a product of characteristic polynomials two weighted graphs whose underlying graphs are Γ As an application, we compute the signature of a link whose corresponding weighted graph is a double covering of that of a given link.

Polymorphism of Cefotaxime sodium

Three crystal forms of cefotaxime sodium have been isolated by recrystallization and characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The dissolution patterns of three crystal forms of cefotaxime sodium were studied in water at 37±0.5℃, 90rpm for 180 minutes. Three crystal forms of cefotaxime sodium showed difference in dissolution rate and solubility. After storage of two months at 52% RH (saturated solution of Na_(2)Cr_(2)O_(2).2H_(2)O / 20℃), all crystal forms showed no transformation.

Apophasis as an Approach to Diasporic Identification in V. S. Naipaul’s A House for Mr. Biswas

This paper explores apophatic aspects of the diasporic identity quest in A House for Mr. Biswas. A House is one of V. S. Naipaul’s novels that delineate Indian immigrants’ diasporic experience in postcolonial times. Seeking identity is what the postcolonial immigrants inevitably confronted, and, in this regard, it is not strange that the subject of identity and its identification recur in Naipaul’s writings. In this paper, this issue is explored through apophasis, a form of rhetoric and reasoning, in that Mr. Biswas gains his individuality through apophatic speculation. Apophasis is a way for finding or describing a certain ambivalent object by using negative propositions, or by using words to highlight its ineffability. In terms of seeking his diasporic identity, Mr. Biswas pursues his individuality by going through the long course of denying and doubting his family relationships, Hindu traditions, Indian groupism, and postcolonial institutions. Similarly, his emotions in relation to his family and his desire to write about his life are described, in part, as unsayable. That is another facet of apophasis: a communing experience beyond words with the paradox of “expressing” by “not expressing.”

The aim of this research is to clarify the concept of "God's praxis" and "educational ministry" and also to find out some possibilities of praxis-oriented educational ministry though the case study about Shinbanpo Methodist Church, Korea. First of all, this article is more interested in aspect of praxis-oriented educational ministry rather than transmission or indoctrination of educational ministry in the Korean churches. In addition, researcher classifies three different praxis-oriented educational ministry theories in terms of James Fowler's "God's praxis theory," Wonyoung Sohn's "Theopraxis theory," and Richard Osmer's "Theodrarna theory." On the basis of the common grounds of God's praxis above three, this article tries to investigate the educational ministry of Shinbanpo Church as an alternative case for a God's praxis-oriented educational ministry. In details, by the reference of especially Osmer's theory for the congregation that he connected between Christ's fivefold office (prophetic, priestly, transfigured, royal, and open fellowship) and congregational Christopraxis (Marturia, Diakonia, Doxology, Didache, and Koinonia), this article also suggests some ideas for God's praxis-oriented educational ministry through the Shinbanpo Methodist Church. In conclusion, through God's praxis-oriented educational ministry, Korean churches who have been stumbling recently could find some new ways for the reign of God.

The Output-to-Output Weight-Identity Constraint in the Forms Related by Optional Rules

This paper shows that compensatory lengthening occurs in Korean only in the forms related by optional phonological or morphological rules. This peculiarity is explained within the framework of Correspondence Theory by the Output-to-Output (00) Weight-Identity Constraint, which regulates weight identity between the two possible output forms. This paper argues that the notion of faithfulness is extensible to the forms related not only by morphological rules but also by phonological rules. (Kyungpook National University)

일부 한국인에서 환자-대조군 연구에 의한 위암 관련 요인

A hospital case-control study was initiated to investigate stomach cancer-related variables in some Koreans November 1996 to December 1998. The cases were selected from inpatients admitted to department of general surgery of Dongsan Hospital, Keimyung University to have gastrectomy for the first time and to whom controls were individually matched from the same hospital. The face-to-face interview was administered by one trained interviewer before patients underwent surgery. One hundred sixty seven cases and 324 controls were analyzed in the final analysis. After univariatc conditional logistic regression, multiple conditional logistic regression with backward elimination started with variables having P less than 0.20. The variables increasing the risk were number of siblings, onion, excessive salt or soybean sauce use, and past history of gastritis or peptic ulcer. However, consumption of fresh fruits, green onion and garlic, and all kinds of stew, and years since last gastric endoscopy appeared to decrease the risk. Drinking, all kinds of vegetables, tofu, duration of refrigerator use and frequency of UGI were marginally statistically significant. These results suggested that stomach cancer-related variables in Korea are consistent with other studies, however onion, all kinds of stew, and variables related with screening behaviors merit further studies.

여가라이프스타일 척도의 구성타당도 검증

The purpose of the present study was to test the reliability and the construct validity of the leisure life style(LLS) scale developed by Woo & Sohn(2009). A convenience sample of 272 employed adults(male: 149, female: 123) was obtained in Korea. Statistical procedures included descriptive statistic, exploratory factor analysis(EFA), internal consistency, and confirmatory factor analysis(CFA). The EFA results were shown that the LLS scale was consisted with the study of Woo & Sohn(2009). Results indicated that 7 LLS factors composed in 43 items were extracted: 'reasonable planning', 'sensation seeking', leisure helplessness', 'accessability', 'relation-centered', 'family-centered', and 'work-centered'. However, the EFA results of this study was more effective than the study of Woo & Sohn(2009). For example, the cumulative % of variance was improved from 43.71 to 50.08 and factor items were reduced from 62 to 43, and reliability was improved. Next, EFA was conducted to test the factor validity of this inventory with AMOS 7.0. Several goodness of fit indices was used to assess model fit: X²/df, GFI, TLI, CFI, RMSEA. The LLS scale yielded a X²/df=1.964, GFI=.896, TLI=.913, CFI=.918, RMSEA=.062 that indicated an acceptable level of fit with no additional modification suggested.
