The Artemisia gmelinii (AG) is globally distributed and have been used for medicinal purpose in Korea. Prior studies have reported that polyphenol constituents from the Artemisia genus have multiple functions including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and anti-oxidative effects. Natural Killer (NK) cells are predominant innate lymphocyte subsets that possess promising clinical utilization such as anti-tumor and anti-viral responses. In this study, our results revealed that AG significantly enhances NK cell-associated cytokine IFN-g expression and cytotoxic activity against YAC-1 cells in mouse splenic and mesenteric NK cells. Accordingly, utilizing the human NK92 cells with K562 cells, as target cells, we double-checked that AG enhances NK cell cytotoxic activity. Our qRT-PCR analyses revealed that AG enhanced IFN-g expression in both mouse and human NK cell lines. In addition, our flow cytometry analyses showed AG enhances the proportion of NKp46+CD49b+ NK cells in the mouse spleen ex vivo. Taking together, these observations demonstrated that AG activates NK cells and may contribute to enhance the innate immune responses.

The root of Fallopia japonica has been used as an alternative herbal medicine for a variety of therapeutic purpose in Chinese and Japanese. F.japonica has received increasing global attention due to its high stilbene contents as well as multiple catechins and carotenoids. Particulate matter (PM) is the major well-known threat of urban air pollution. Recent studies have been identified the expousre to PM in urban areas possesses adverse effects on the respiratory system via inducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the lung. We investigated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative mechanisms of F.japonica extract (FJE) on PM-induced inflammatory response in MH-S lung macrophages. Our studies have shown, PM up-regulated the levels of cytokines and reactive oxygen species in MH-S. FJE treatment significantly reduces the PM-induced cytoine production in MH-S. Moreover, FJE markedly down-regulated NFκB translocation and degradation of IκB. FJE significantly elevated heme oxygenase-1 production and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor2 translocation to nuclear. These results suggested that FJE suppresses PM-induced inflammatory responses in MH-S.
A Study on the climbing strategy over vertical steps for the QuadTrack-III

This paper introduces a mobile robot named QuadTrack-III developed for urban search and rescue. This robot has four modular tracks which can be driven and lifted independently. Thus the configuration of the robot can be varied for adapting to uneven terrain. Each modular track consists of two sprockets with an attachment chain and two BLDC motors are embedded in the track module. It also includes BLDC motor drivers for each joint. Because the modular track mechanism embodies all of the things required for driving, the weight of the main body is smaller than the tracks. From this feature, the mass center of the robot can be lowered and the distribution of reaction forces can be varied. This paper describes the mechanical structure, the control architecture and a climbing strategy over vertical step for the QuadTrack-III. It also shows some experimental results of the vertical step climbing strategy.

A methodology for determining the design allowables of composite laminates by using lamina level test data and finite element analysis (FEA) is proposed and verified in this paper. An existing method that yields the laminate design allowables by using the complete test results for laminates was improved to reduce the expensive and time-consuming tests. Input property samples for FEA were generated after considering the statistical distribution characteristics of lamina level test data. , and design allowables were derived from several FEA analyses of laminates. To apply and verify the proposed method, Hexcel 8552 IM7 test data were used. For both un-notched and open-hole laminate configurations, it was found that the design allowables obtained from the analysis correctly predicted the laminate test data within the confidence interval. The potential of the present simulation to substitute the laminate tests was demonstrated well.

Background: Vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are raising concerns about vaccine safety, particularly in the context of large-scale immunization. To address public concerns, we measured the baseline incidence rates of major conditions potentially related to vaccine-related adverse events (VAEs). We aimed to provide a basis for evaluating VAEs and verifying causality. Methods: Conditions of interest were selected from the US Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System Table of Reportable Events and a recent report from a European consortium on vaccine surveillance. We used the National Health Insurance Service database in Korea to identify the monthly numbers of cases with these conditions. Data from January 2006 to June 2020 were included. Prediction models were constructed from the observed incidences using an autoregressive integrated moving average. We predicted the incidences of the conditions and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for January through December 2021. In addition, subgroup analysis for the expected vaccination population was conducted. Results: Mean values (95% CIs) of the predicted monthly incidence of vasovagal syncope, anaphylaxis, brachial neuritis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, Bell's palsy, Guillain-Barré syndrome, encephalopathy, optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, immune thrombocytopenic purpura, and systemic lupus erythematosus in 2021 were 23.89 (19.81–27.98), 4.72 (3.83–5.61), 57.62 (51.37–63.88), 0.03 (0.01–0.04), 8.58 (7.90–9.26), 0.26 (0.18–0.34), 2.13 (1.42–2.83), 1.65 (1.17–2.13), 0.19 (0.14–0.25), 0.75 (0.61–0.90), and 3.40 (2.79–4.01) cases per 100,000 respectively. The majority of the conditions showed an increasing trend with seasonal variations in their incidences. Conclusion: We measured the incidence of a total of 11 conditions that could potentially be associated with VAEs to predict the monthly incidence in 2021. In Korea, conditions that could potentially be related to VAEs occur on a regular basis, and an increasing trend is observed with seasonality.
