Aims: Late recurrence (> 2 years) after liver resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is usually considered as multi-centric tumors or de novo cancer formation. We aimed to investigate risk factors, patterns and outcomes of late recurrence after HCC resection. Methods: From a multicenter database from 2001 to 2015, 734 patients who were alive and recurrence-free at 2 years after curative resection of initial HCC were enrolled into this retrospective study. Univariate and multivariate Cox-regression analysis were used to identify independent risk factors of late recurrence. Patterns, treatments and outcomes of late recurrence were investigated and analyzed. Results: During a median follow-up of 78.0 months after surgery, 303 patients (41.3%) developed late recurrence. Multivariate analysis revealed that cirrhosis, macroscopic vascular invasion, satellites, and tumor size > 5cm were independent risk factors of late recurrence. Among them, 273 (90.1%) were sole intrahepatic recurrence, 30 (9.9%) were concurrent intrahepatic and extrahepatic recurrence, and none of them was sole extrahepatic recurrence; 165 (54.4%) patients received curative treatments for recurrent HCC, including re-resection, transplantation and local ablation. Multivariate analysis showed regular postoperative surveillance and receiving curative treatments were two independent protective factors of prolonging survival for those patients with late recurrence. Conclusions: Late recurrence is correlated with cirrhosis and certain tumor-related characteristics of initial HCC. The patterns of late recurrence suggest that postoperative surveillance after 2 years of surgery could be adjusted and more targeted. Regular postoperative surveillance improves the probability to receive curative treatments again, yielding to better outcomes for patients with late recurrence.

Hao-bin Hu*,Xu-dong Zheng,Huai-sheng Hu,Yu-feng Jian 대한화학회 2007 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.28 No.9
A new oleanane-type triterpenoid estersaponin, bodinierin C (1), along with two known saponins, mazusaponin I (2) and ciwujianoside C (3), were isolated from the water-soluble part of the root barks of Elsholtzia bodinieri. The structure of bodinierin C was characterized by spectroscopic means and chemical hydrolysis as 3b -O-caffeoyl-23-hydroxylechinocystic acid 28-O-a -L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 4)-b -D-glucopyranosyl-(1?6)-b -D-glucopyranosyl ester. The known compounds were identified by comparing their spectral data with those of authentic samples or data reported in the literature. All compounds were firstly isolated from Elsholtzia bodinieri family.

Blends of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and a functional ionic liquid (IL), 3-methyl-1-(ethoxycarbonylethyl) imidazoliumtetrafluoroborate ([AOEMIm][BF4]) with various weight ratios were prepared by melt compounding andtheir interactions, compatibilities, processing characteristics, crystallization behaviors, mechanical properties and thermaldegradation were investigated in this study. The interaction between PLLA and [AOEMIm][BF4] was first studiedby infrared spectroscopy (IR) investigation, and then the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter between PLLA and[AOEMIm][BF4] was calculated. The compatibility was also supported by both sample appearance and scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) results. Crystallization and melting conditions were obtained from differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), and the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PLLA showed a gradual decrease with the increasing addition of[AOEMIm][BF4]. The balancing torque data were obtained by Haaker torque rheometry, and the molecular weight data ofprocessed PLLA obtained by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) tests reflected a positive effect of [AOEMIm][BF4]on the melt-processing of PLLA. A strong increase of the mechanical parameters of PLLA, such as the elongation atbreak and the impact strength, was observed with the incorporation of [AOEMIm][BF4] up to the content of 7 phr (phris the abbreviation for parts per hundreds of resin, n phr denoted n g IL/100 g PLLA), while the tensile strength decreasedslightly. The thermal stability of PLLA took a sustained downward trend, with the increasing contents of [AOEMIm][BF4] inits matrices, as presented from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). PLLA blended with 5 phr [AOEMIm][BF4] achievedexcellent overall performance; as well, the mechanical properties improved considerably, and damage to the thermal stabilitywas acceptable.
Involvement of FoxM1 in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Recurrence
Xu, Nuo,Wu, Sheng-Di,Wang, Hao,Wang, Qun,Bai, Chun-Xue Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.9
Background: Predictive biomarkers for lung cancer recurrence after curative tumor resection remain unclear. This study set out to assess the role of FoxM1 in the recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer. Methods: Immunohistochemistry for FoxM1 expression was performed on paraffin-embedded tumor tissues from 165 NSCLC patients. Association of FoxM1 expression with clinicopathological parameters and disease free survival were evaluated. Results: Our results indicated FoxM1 expression to be significantly associated with poorer tissue differentiation (P =0.03), higher TNM stage (P <0.01), lymph node metastasis (P <0.01), advanced tumor stage (P <0.01), and poorer disease free survival (P <0.01). Multivariable analysis showed that FoxM1 expression increased the hazard of recurrence (hazard ratio= 1.96, 95% CI, 1.04-3.17, P <0.05), indicating that FoxM1 is an independent and significant predictor of lung cancer recurrence. Conclusion: Therefore, FoxM1 is an independent risk factor for recurrence of NSCLC. Elevated FoxM1 expression could be used as an indicator of poor disease free survival.

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a filamentous fungal pathogen that can infect many economically important crops and vegetables. Alternative oxidase is the terminal oxidase of the alternative respiratory pathway in fungal mitochondria. The function of alternative oxidase was investigated in the regulation of sensitivity of S. sclerotiorum to two commercial fungicides, azoxystrobin and procymidone which have different fungitoxic mechanisms. Two isolates of S. sclerotiorum were sensitive to both fungicides. Application of salicylhydroxamic acid, a specific inhibitor of alternative oxidase, significantly increased the values of effective concentration causing 50% mycelial growth inhibition (EC50) of azoxystrobin to both S. sclerotiorum isolates, whereas notably decreased the EC50 values of procymidone. In mycelial respiration assay azoxystrobin displayed immediate inhibitory effect on cytochrome pathway capacity, but had no immediate effect on alternative pathway capacity. In contrast, procymidone showed no immediate impact on capacities of both cytochrome and alternative pathways in the mycelia. However, alternative oxidase encoding gene (aox) transcript and protein levels, alternative respiration pathway capacity of the mycelia were obviously increased by pre-treatment for 24 h with both azoxystrobin and procymidone. These results indicate that alternative oxidase was involved in the regulation of sensitivity of S. sclerotiorum to the fungicides azoxystrobin and procymidone, and that both fungicides could affect aox gene expression and the alternative respiration pathway capacity development in mycelia of this fungal pathogen.

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a cosmopolitan, filamentous, fungal pathogen that can cause serious disease in many kinds of crops. Alternative oxidase is the terminal oxidase of the alternative mitochondrial respiratory pathway in fungi and higher plants. We report the presence of this alternative pathway respiration and demonstrate its expression in two isolates of S. sclerotiorum under unstressed, normal culture conditions. Application of salicylhydroxamic acid, a specific inhibitor of alternative oxidase, severely inhibited the mycelial growth of S. sclerotiorum both on potato dextrose agar plates and in liquid culture media. Inhibition of alternative oxidase could influence the growth pattern of S. sclerotiorum,as salicylhydroxamic acid treatment induced obvious aerial mycelia growing on potato dextrose agar plates. Under the treatment with salicylhydroxamic acid, S. sclerotiorum formed sclerotia much more slowly than the control. Treatment with hydrogen peroxide in millimolar concentrations greatly decreased the growth rate of mycelia and delayed the formation of sclerotia in both tested S. sclerotiorum isolates. As well, this treatment obviously increased their alternative pathway respiration and the levels of both mRNA and protein of the alternative oxidase. These results indicate that alternative oxidase is involved in the regulation of growth, development, and resistance to oxidative stress of S. sclerotiorum.

Objective: To evaluate the value of early identification and endovascular treatment of iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS), with or without deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Materials and Methods: Three groups of patients, IVCS without DVT (group 1, n = 39), IVCS with fresh thrombosis (group 2, n = 52) and IVCS with non-fresh thrombosis (group 3, n = 34) were detected by Doppler ultrasonography, magnetic resonance venography, computed tomography or venography. The fresh venous thrombosis were treated by aspiration and thrombectomy, whereas the iliac vein compression per se were treated with a self-expandable stent. In cases with fresh thrombus, the inferior vena cava filter was inserted before the thrombosis suction, mechanical thrombus ablation, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, stenting or transcatheter thrombolysis. Results: Stenting was performed in 111 patients (38 of 39 group 1 patients and 73 of 86 group 2 or 3 patients). The stenting was tried in one of group 1 and in three of group 2 or 3 patients only to fail. The initial patency rates were 95% (group 1), 89% (group 2) and 65% (group 3), respectively and were significantly different (p = 0.001). Further, the six month patency rates were 93% (group 1), 83% (group 2) and 50% (group 3), respectively, and were similarly significantly different (p = 0.001). Both the initial and six month patency rates in the IVCS patients (without thrombosis or with fresh thrombosis), were significantly greater than the patency rates of IVCS patients with non-fresh thrombosis. Conclusion: From the cases examined, the study suggests that endovascular treatment of IVCS, with or without thrombosis, is effective. Dielectric and Conductivity Properties of Poly(L-lactide) and Poly(L-lactide)/Ionic Liquid Blends
Pei Xu,Hao Guan Gui,Shan Zhong Yang,Yun Sheng Ding,Qian Hao 한국고분자학회 2014 Macromolecular Research Vol.22 No.3
Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) was employed to study the dielectric and conductivity propertiesof poly(L-lactide) and poly(L-lactide)/ionic liquid (IL) blends. The experimental dielectric data were analyzedwithin the formalism of complex permittivity. The results were discussed in terms of AC conductivity, αN relaxationcorresponding to the longest normal mode motion, α relaxation originating from the segmental mode motion, andDC conductivity. The results revealed that the motion of the polymer chains governs the charge carrier transport. The temperature dependence of the relaxation times follows the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) equation. Theincorporation of IL into the matrix accelerates the segmental (α) and normal mode (αN) motions and the conductivity, and increases the charge carrier movement of IL following the longest αN motion of chains, which led to an increasein the relaxation strength of the αN relaxation.
