A flow injection catechol biosensor based on tyrosinase entrapped in carbon nanotube modified polypyrrole biocomposite film on a glassy carbon surface has been developed. Amperometric response was measured as a function of concentration of catechol, at a fixed bias voltage of -50 mV at a flow rate of 1 mL/min. The proposed biosensor exhibited impressive analytical performance such as a linear range between 3 and 50 ㎛, a short response time (10 s), a detection limit of 0.671 ㎛ and an excellent operational (with a relative standard deviation of 0.54%) and long-term stability (85% remained after 10th week). A comparison of the analytical parameters of the developed biosensor with polypyrrole/tyrosinase film electrode was performed in the study. CNT was shown to enhance the electron transfer between the electrode and enzyme and capable to carry higher bioactivity owing to its intensified surface area.

The design of novel proton exchange membranes with high conductivity and better dimensional stability has become increasingly important due to the need for applications in different devices. The present work shows the acid-doped and crosslinked polyacrylamide (PAM) networks including flexible spaces. To this end PAM was modified with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BG) to form PAM35BG and PAM50BG networks, which would afford more space for protonated solvents. The reaction of PAM with BG was monitored by FTIR and 13C CP-MAS NMR. The polymer electrolytes were produced by acid doping at several stoichiometric ratios with respect to the monomer repeat unit of a host polymer. The resulting materials exhibited better thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stabilities and had distinct T g values. Additionally, the pores of the PAM-BG materials were filled with H3PO4 to get PAM35BG0.5H3PO4 and PAM50BG1.0H3PO4. The doping enhanced the proton conductivities of the membranes as high as 0.003 S/cm at 120 oC under an anhydrous atmosphere. The proton diffusion mechanism and the dielectric relaxation were further examined using the complex modulus formalism, M*.

A novel amperometric biosensor, based on poly(glycine methacrylate-co-3-thienylmethyl methacrylate)-polypyrrole-carbon nanotube {Poly(GMA-co-MTM)/PPy/CNT} composite matrix, was used for the determination of eighteen phenol derivatives. The enzyme, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was covalently immobilized to this novel composite polymer matrix. The measurement of the phenolic compounds was carried out by the electrode reduction of the generated phenoxy radical, product of the enzymatic reaction, at a fixed voltage of ―50 mV. Optimization of the experimental parameters was performed with regard to pH, operational potential and hydrogen peroxide concentration. The differences in sensitivity, linear range, detection limit and response time observed for series of phenolic compounds were discussed. The biosensor gave no response to m-cresol, o-cresol and p-cresol. Poly(GMA-co-MTM)/PPy/CNT/HRP composite film electrode retained 80% of its initial activity after the usage of 700 measurements in one month.

The current research aimed to produce anhydrous gel organic electrolytes with superior performance for high-temperature supercapacitor applications. Within this scope, anhydrous electrolytes were designed by the termination of 1,4- butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDE) with 5-aminotetrazole (AT). The BDE(AT)2 was further doped with phosphoric acid (PA) and 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMT, as an ionic liquid) at varied ratios. The structure of fabricated electrolytes was elucidated with various spectroscopic techniques, and thermal studies confirmed high thermal stabilities and low glass transition temperatures, suggesting that they could be used in a wide temperature range. Different supercapacitor systems, in combination with carbon-based electrodes and BDE(AT)2, BDE(AT)2-0.1EMT, and BDE(AT)2-PA-0.1EMT electrolytes, were constructed. The supercapacitor device in combination with BDE(AT)2-PA-0.1EMT electrolyte, showed the highest ionic conductivity value of 1.2×10-4 S cm-1. The electrode/electrolyte combination demonstrated a maximum specific capacitance (80.4 F g-1), the highest specific energy (2.91 Wh kg-1), and highly effective electrochemical reversibility (up to 2.250 cycles). The supercapacitor device illustrated a better performance at higher temperatures in terms of its specific capacitance value.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are dangerous chemical compounds that can be formed by cooking foods at high temperatures. The aim of this study is to determine the level of contamination of PAH compounds with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on heat treated meat samples and the consumption of PAH compounds in meat samples, as well as the dietary exposure status and possible health risk estimation. In five different heat treated meat samples (meat doner, chicken doner, meatballs, grilled chicken, and fish), the total PAH (Σ16PAH) contamination level was 6.08, 4.42, 4.45, 4.91, and 7.26 μg/kg, respectively. Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in meatballs and grilled fish samples had a level 0.70 and 0.73 μg/kg. All of the samples analyzed were found to be below the EU permitted limit (5 μg/kg) in terms of BaP. Estimates of daily intake (EDI) for a total of 16PAH in heat treated meat doner, chicken doner, meatballs, grilled chicken and fish samples were 3.41, 3.71, 2.49, 4.12, and 1.77 ng/kg bw/day, respectively. In this study, the average margin of exposure (MOE) value calculated was found in the range of 179.487 and 425.000 for BaP and PAH4. This study is the first study to provide important information in terms of evaluating the possible health risk that PAH compounds can create in people s diets due to heat treatment of meat and meat products in Sivas, Turkey.

Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma is an uncommon tumor of the testes that usually presents as a hydrocele. Here, we present the case of one patient who did not have a history of asbestos exposure. The tumor was localized in the tunica vaginalis and was composed of three pedunculated masses macroscopically. Microscopically, branching papillary structures with focal coagulative necrosis were present. In addition to immunohistochemistry, simian virus 40 DNA was also tested by polymerase chain reaction. This report presents one case of this rare entity, its clinical and macroscopic features, and follow-up results.

Background: The prognostic significance of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio for progression free survival in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma is unclear. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 45 patients diagnosed with metastatic RCC previously treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors from two centers, Akdeniz University Hospital and Afyon Kocatepe University. The prognostic value of the pretreatment neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio, and other clinical and laboratory parameters were assessed by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: Median progression free survival (PFS) was 13.9 months [95% CI for HR (6.88-20.91)] and overall survival figure of 16.6 months [95% CI for HR (7.23-26.03)] Univariate analysis revealed that PFS was significantly affected by hemoglobin level [p=0.013 (95% CI for HR (0.71-0.96))], eosinophil count [p=0.031 (95% CI for HR (0.20-0.92))], ratio of neutrophil lymphocytes (NLR) [p=0.007 (95% CI for HR (1.47-11.74))] and calcium level [p=0.006 (95% CI for HR (0.15-0.73))]. However, only NLR [p=0.031 (95% CI for HR (1.15-18.1))] and calcium levels [p=0.018 (95% CI for HR (0.20-18.1))] retained significance with multivariate analysis. Median PFS was 23.9 vs 8.6 months in patients with NLR ${\leq}2$ vs NLR >2 (Log rank; p= 0.040). Conclusions: This study showed that increased pretreatment NLR is an independent prognostic factor for patients with metastatic RCC using tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
