The purpose of this study was to propose a standard for differentiation between normal dogs and patients with hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) by measuring skin thickness via ultrasonography in small breed dogs. Significant changes in skin thickness of patients treated with prednisolone (PDS) or patients with HAC treated with trilostane were evaluated. Skin thickness was retrospectively measured on three abdominal digital images obtained from small breed dogs weighing < 15 kg that underwent abdominal ultrasonography. Mean skin thickness of normal dogs was 1.03 ± 0.25 mm (mean ± SD). Both the HAC and PDS groups showed significantly thinner skin than that in the normal group. Seven of the 10 HAC patients treated with trilostane had increased skin thickness. The area under the curve value of 0.807 was based on the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve for differentiating normal dogs from HAC patients. Sensitivity was 76% and specificity was 73% when skin thickness was less than the 0.83 mm cutoff value. In conclusion, measurement of skin thickness in small breed dogs by using ultrasonography is likely to provide clinical information useful in differentiating HAC patients from normal dogs. However, exposure to PDS, trilostane, and other conditions may have a significant effect on skin thickness.
Even though the Korean War was a historical momentum stamped by the American patriotism against the menacing power of communism in American society, it has been a “Forgotten War” over the second half of the 20th century. Unlike most of the wars occurred in the 20th century, the Korean War has barely been mentioned in the American literature. Thus, through the Useless Servants written by Ronaldo Hinojosa and A long way from Home written by Gordon Kahn, this research aims to find out the covert meaning of the Latin Americans' participation in the Korean War and historical significance of the Korean War in the formation and development of the Chicano Movement in 1960. In general, the approach to the Korean War has been either approving the US patriotism by actively taking part in the Korean War or critically reviewing the Chicanos' involvement in the US military action. It is noteworthy, then, that both works go beyond the traditional understanding of the Korean War in which it serves as a transition point of conscience of Latinos on the American nation. In other words, they show the formation of critical consciousness of Latinos that refers to the resistance to the dominant ideology in American society.
It is perhaps over the actor issue — arguably the societist approach to non-states as actors of public diplomacy — that scholars have long and most diverged in their redefinitions of the practice. Yet, there has rarely been a critical look at the approach, and still less, a formulation of it as a coherent perspective. To fill these gaps, this study pursues two goals at once: first, to construct the whole edifice of the approach by mapping out a genealogy of its evolutionary development; second, to appraise it against the hallmark of definitional holism — the quality of a definition in representing all existing particulars of public diplomacy practice. This study finds societist redefinitions lacking holism, over-representing post-modern practices while under-representing modern ones. Then, it presents further thoughts on the challenges to the societist approach: the vicissitudes in the world of contemporary public diplomacy, and the prospect for the most abstract and the least analytical redefinition.

A submucosal gastric adenocarcinoma, especially the signet ring cell type, is rare. The histologic evaluation techniques for this lesion has not been established; however, histologic confirmation is very important for decision of treatment method. Here, we report a 57-year-old man with a 12-cm gastric submucosal signet ring cell type adenocarcinoma, diagnosed by an endoscopic ultrasound-guided Trucut biopsy and immunochemical studies. This case suggests that the endoscopic ultrasound-guided Trucut biopsy might be a useful diagnostic method in cases of gastric adenocarcinoma with features of gastrointestinal stromal tumor.
