Evaluation of two interforaminal implants and implant-assisted removable dentures on stress distribution: an in vitro study

        Selda Arat Bilhan,Onur Geckili,Altug Cilingir,Ergun Bozdag,Hakan Bilhan 대한구강악안면외과학회 2019 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.45 No.4

Objectives: In mandibular edentulism, the treatment option with a two-interforaminal implant-retained bridge and a removable partial denture is rarely evaluated in literature. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the stress distribution of this treatment option by comparing it with traditional treatment options with interforaminal implants in the edentulous mandible. Materials and Methods: Two interforaminal implants were placed in a formalin-fixed cadaver mandible, and overdentures with three different types of attachments were fabricated: (1) two ball attachments and an overdenture, (2) a Dolder bar and an overdenture, and (3) screw-retained two-implant inter-canine porcelain fused to a metal bridge and an implant-assisted removable denture (IARD) with precision attachments. Three biting conditions were generated for each denture type, and the strains were documented under vertical loading of 100 N. Results: The calculated strain values from measured strains in all measurement sites and loading conditions for the screw-retained two-implant inter-canine porcelain fused to a metal bridge and a cast framework partial denture with precision attachments situation were lower than in the other scenarios (P<0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of the present study, it can be concluded that an IARD may be a reasonable and valuable alternative to ball attachments or a bar in two interforaminal implants, especially when the patients prefer to be able to show their teeth even when they take out their removable dentures.

Evaluation of Asymmetric Dimethylarginine, Malondialdehyde, and Vitamin Levels of Borderline Personality Disorder Patients With and Without Self-Mutilation

        Selda Telo,Sema Baykara 대한신경정신의학회 2023 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.20 No.12

Objective Believing that oxidative stress may be increased in borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients with self-mutilating behaviors (SMB), we aimed to measure serum asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in these patients. Methods The study included 60 patients diagnosed with BPD and 30 healthy controls. BPD patients were divided into two groups: 30 female patients with SMB and 30 female patients with no-self-mutilating behavior (NSMB). ADMA, MDA, vitamin A, and vitamin E levels were analyzed. Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were conducted with the participants. Results Serum ADMA and MDA levels were higher in SMB and NSMB group compared to control group. Serum vitamin E levels were also lower in the SMB group compared to the control group. Positive correlations were determined between both ADMA and MDA, and between BDI and BAI scores. Also, BAI scores were statistically higher in SMB group compared to NSMB group. Conclusion It was discovered that levels of ADMA and MDA, which reflected oxidative stress, were elevated in patients with BPD who exhibited SMB. Accordingly, future studies should investigate the role of oxidative stress in a more comprehensive way in terms of the different mechanisms underlying and treatments involved in borderline personality disorder.

Psychometric Evaluation of a Turkish Version of the Diabetes Fear of Self-injecting and Self-testing Questionnaire (D-FISQ)

Selda Celik,Rukiye Pinar 한국간호과학회 2016 Asian Nursing Research Vol.10 No.3

Purpose: To examine the psychometric properties of a Turkish version of the Diabetes Fear of Injecting and Self-testing Questionnaire (D-FISQ). Methods: Forward-backward translation of the D-FISQ from English into Turkish was conducted. Original English and translated forms were examined by a panel group. Validity was investigated using content, confirmatory factor analysis, and divergent validity. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach a values, item-total correlations, and intraclass correlations. The sample comprised 350 patients with diabetes. Data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 for Windows and LISREL 8. Results: The content validity index for the panel members was .90, which indicated perfect content validity; items in D-FISQ were clear, concise, readable, and distinct. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the original construct of the D-FISQ. All items had factor loadings higher than the recommended level of .40. The D-FISQ scores were discriminated by the level of anxiety. Reliability results were also satisfactory. Cronbach a values were within ideal limits. Item-total correlation coefficient ranged from .72 to .86. In terms of test-retest reliability, intraclass correlation coefficient was found to be over .90. Conclusions: D-FISQ is a valid and reliable questionnaire in assessing needle-prick fear among Turkish patients with diabetes. We recommend performing the Turkish D-FISQ in determining and screening patients with diabetes who have fear related to self-insulin injection and finger-prick test. Thus, health care professionals should be aware of the potential consequences of injection fear such as insulin misuse and poor self-monitoring of blood glucose, which may have unfavorable effects on optimal diabetes management.

Microencapsulation of Three-Component Thermochromic System for Reversible Color Change and Thermal Energy Storage

        M. Selda Tözüm,Sennur Alay Aksoy,Cemil Alkan 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.3

In this study, poly(methyl methacrylate)/thermochromic system (PMMA/TS) and poly(methyl methacrylate-comethacrylic acid)/thermochromic system (P(MMA-co-MA)/TS) microcapsules were prepared by using emulsion polymerization method. The thermochromic system was consisting of crystal violet lactone (CVL) as a leuco dye, bisphenol- A (BPA) as a color developer, and 1-tetradecanol (TD) as a solvent. Microcapsules with different ratio of core/shell were synthesized to examine the effect of core/shell ratio on the properties of microcapsules. Phase transition temperatures and enthalpies, morphology, and particle size distributions of the microcapsules were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle size analyzer instruments, respectively. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to prove the presence of the thermochromic system in the microcapsules. UV-Vis absorption bands of the thermochromic system (TS) and microencapsulated thermochromic system (MTS) at both below and above the melting temperature of the solvent were obtained by using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The visible color change depending on temperature was monitored for each microcapsule individually by using a digital camera. Spherical morphology and unimodal particle size distribution of the microcapsules were determined by means of SEM photographs and particle size distribution curve analysis. The mean particle sizes of the produced microcapsules varied in a range of 16.0-35.2 μm. The digital camera photographs and the UV-Vis absorbance curves proved that color changed between dark blue and light blue depending upon the temperature change. Meanwhile, the produced microcapsules were proven for an excellent heat storage capacity for thermal energy storage owing to phase changing of the tetradecanol solvent used in the thermochromic system. The melting enthalpy of the microcapsules ranged from 145.5 J/g to 193.4 J/g.

Rizalar, Selda,Ozbas, Ayfer,Akyolcu, Neriman,Gungor, Bulent Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.8

Aims: To identify the psychosocial adjustment of Turkish patients with breast cancer and the effects of perceived social support on their adjustment. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 100 volunteering patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the last six months reporting to the Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit at the Medical Faculty Hospital in northern Turkey. The data for the study were collected through the Descriptive Information Form, the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self-reflection (PAIS-SR) and the Cancer-Specific Social Support Scale and analyzed via SPSS 16.0 for Windows. Descriptive statistics, Chi square test, ANOVA and correlation were used to evaluate data. Results: There was a negative significant correlation between mean scores in the sub-scales of the social support scale and the ones in the sub-scales of the psychosocial adjustment to illness scale (p<0.05). Similarly, there was a negative significant correlation between confidence support and health care orientation as well as adjustment to social environment. Likewise, emotional support was in a negative significant correlation with health care orientation, adjustment to domestic environment, extended family relationships and adjustment to social environment. Conclusions: It was concluded that social support for patients with breast cancer had an influence on their psychosocial adjustment to illness. Holistic care should be given to breast cancer patients by oncology nurses especially in the first six months of treatment. It could be concluded that patients should be accompanied by their family/relatives in treatment and care following their diagnosis with breast cancer, that their family should be made more aware of the fact that the patient should be physically and psychologically supported, that patients with breast cancer should be provided with domiciliary care, and that they should be encouraged to participate in social support groups.

V2O5-TiO2 heterostructural semiconductors: Synthesis and photocatalytic elimination of organic contaminant

Meltem Isleyen,Eda Sinirtas Ilkme,Gulin Selda Pozan Soylu 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.6

V2O5-TiO2 binary oxide catalysts were successfully prepared with different wt% V2O5 loading by solid state mechanical mixing (SSDMMix), and these nanocomposites were modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as surfactant. The resulting catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Braun-Emmet-Teller (BET) analysis of surface area techniques. The photocatalytic activities of all samples were evaluated by degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4CP) in aqueous solution under UV irradiation. 50 wt% V2O5-TiO2 photocatalyst exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity than pure V2O5, TiO2 and P-25. The interaction between V2O5 and TiO2 affected the photocatalytic efficiency of binary oxide catalysts. In addition, CTAB and HTABassisted samples significantly enhanced the efficiency of 50V2O5-TiO2 binary oxide catalyst. The highest percentage of 4-chlorophenol degradation (100%) and highest reaction rate (1.69mg L−1 min−1) were obtained in 30 minutes with (50V2O5-TiO2)-CTAB catalyst. It is concluded that the addition of surfactant to binary oxide remarkably enhanced the photocatalytic activity by modifying the optical and electronic properties of V2O5 and TiO2.
