The Effect of Royal Jelly on Telomere Length and Some Biochemical Parameters in Wistar Albino Rats with Liver Damage Caused by Carbon Tetrachloride

Selcen Cxakır 한국식품영양과학회 2023 Journal of medicinal food Vol.26 No.8

Royal jelly (RJ) is a natural bee product that has been used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times. Thetherapeutic properties of this product, which has rich biological content, are still being investigated with new approaches. Inthis study, the effect of RJ on telomere length, some antioxidant parameters, and lipid profile was examined. This study willcontribute to the literature as it is the first to evaluate the effect of RJ on the length of telomeres in damaged liver tissues. In thestudy, the levels of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoproteincholesterol (LDL-C), aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), telomerase, 80-hydroxy-20-deoxyguanosine(8-OHdG), and paraoxonase-1 (PON1) were investigated with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method and telomerelengths were investigated by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The increased TC, LDL-C levels, and AST andALT activities in the serum after carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) administration approached the control level after RJ administration. PON1 activity decreased in groups with CCl4. PON1 activity increased after RJ administration. The level of 8-OHdG,which increased groups with CCl4, decreased after RJ administration. According to the results of telomere length analysis inliver tissues, telomere lengths in damaged tissues were significantly shortened with CCl4 application and increased with RJapplication. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that RJ may have therapeutic effects on telomere lengths andsome biochemistry parameters.

A novel method for high-frequency transgenic shoot regeneration via Agrobacterium tumefaciens in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.)

        Ramazan Beyaz,E. Selcen Darçın,Murat Aycan,Mustafa Kayan,Mustafa Yıldız 한국식물생명공학회 2016 JOURNAL OF PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY Vol.43 No.2

In this study, routinely used transformation method, which includes transferring explants onto co-cultivation medium after inoculating them with bacterial solution for a while, was compared with 3 different inoculation methods. In every 3 methods, hypocotyl explants excised from 7-day-old sterile flax seedlings having cotyledon leaves and no root system dried under air flow in sterile cabin for 35 min were inoculated with different volumes of bacterial solution at different inoculation periods. GV2260 line of Agrobacterium tumefaciens having ‘pBIN 19’ plasmid containing npt II (neomycin phosphotransferase II) gene and GUS reporter gene was used in transformation studies. After inoculation, hypocotyl segments of seedlings (0.5 cm in length) - were excised and left to co-cultivation for 2 days. Then, explants were transferred to regeneration medium supplemented with different antibiotics. The presence of npt-II and GUS genes in transformants was confirmed by PCR and GUS analysis. The highest results in all characters examined in all cultivars were obtained from the 2 inoculation method in which hypocotyls excised from seedlings inoculated with 500 μl of bacterial solution after drying in sterile cabin for 35 min were used.

      • Poster Session : PS 0762 ; Rheumatology ; Causes of Hospitalisation Among BehCet`s Syndrome Patients in a Rheumatology Center in Turkey

( Yesim Ozguler ),( Vedat Hamuryudan ),( Gulen Hatemi ),( Ayse Selcen Pala ),( Sebahattin Yurdakul ),( Hasan Yazici ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: We surveyed the causes and outcome of hospitalisations among Behcet Syndrome (BS) patients in a dedicated center. Methods: The records of all inpatients in our clinic between 2002-2011 were retrospectively reviewed to identify patients hospitalised with a diagnosis of BS. We reviewed both the inpatient and outpatient charts to identify the demographic and clinical features, causes of hospitalisation and outcome. We also contacted the patients to determine their current condition. Results: 178 BS patients (74% men, mean age 42. 9±11. 3) had been hospitalised for a total of 211 times during the last ten years. We were able to contact 104(58%) of them. The reasons for hospitalisation were directly related to BS organ involvement in 118(56%) and to complications in 93(44%). The most common BS related reasons were vascular involvement in 74/118(63%) (including 21 patients with pulmonary artery aneurysms, 10 with peripheral artery aneurysms and 11 with serious venous thrombosis such as vena cava superior and Budd-Chiari syndrome), neurologic involvement in 14/118(12%), gastrointestinal involvement in 6/118(5%) and eye involvement in 6/118(5%). Hospitalisations caused by complications of BS were infections in 39/93(42%), and other drug related adverse events in 15/93(16%). Neoplasias were diagnosed in 5 patients. Among the 178 patients, 16(9%) had died. Most common causes of death were vascular involvement (n=5), infections (n=4) and malignancies (n=4). Conclusions: Vascular involvement is the leading cause of hospitalisation among BS patients, followed by infections related to therapy. Adverse events related to immunosuppressives are problematic. The predominance of men among hospitalized patients underlines the more severe course of BS in this sex. The relatively low frequency of gastrointestinal involvement among hospitalisations is in line with our previous observation that this type of involvement is rare in our BS patients.

The Effect of Discharging Patients with Low Hemoglobin Levels on Hospital Readmission and Quality of Life after Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery

        Nabi Vugar,Ayhan Selim,Yuksel Selcen,Adhikari Prashant,Vila-Casademunt Alba,Pellise Ferran,Perez-Grueso Francisco Sanchez,Alanay Ahmet,Obeid Ibrahim,Kleinstueck Frank,Acaroglu Emre 대한척추외과학회 2022 Asian Spine Journal Vol.16 No.2

Study Design: Retrospective cohort. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the impact of anemia on functional outcomes, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and early hospital readmission (EHR) rates after adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery at the time of discharge from the hospital. Overview of Literature: Concerns with risks of transfusion, insufficient evidence for its benefits, and the possibility of associated adverse outcomes have led to restrictive transfusion practices. Therefore, patients are discharged according to patient blood management programs that are implemented in hospitals nationwide to reduce unnecessary blood transfusions. However, not many comprehensive kinds of studies exist on the effect of postoperative anemia on functional life and complications. Methods: Anemia severity was defined following the 2011 World Health Organization guidelines. All patients had HRQoL tests as well as complete blood counts pre- and postoperatively. EHR is the admission within 30 days of discharge and was used as the dependent parameter. Results: This study comprised 225 surgically treated ASD patients with a median age of 62.0 years, predominantly women (80%). Of the 225 patients, 82, 137, and six had mild, moderate, and severe anemia at the time of discharge, respectively. Seventeen of the patients (mild [11, 64.7%]; moderate [5, 29.4%]; severe [1, 5.9%]) were readmitted within 30 days. The mean hemoglobin values were higher in readmitted patients (p=0.071). Infection was the leading cause of readmission (n=12), but a low hemoglobin level was not observed in any of these patients at the time of discharge. Except for Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaire, HRQoL improvements did not reach statistical significance in early readmitted patients in the first year after surgery. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrated that the occurrence and the severity of postoperative anemia are not associated with EHR in surgically treated patients with ASD. The findings of the current research suggested that clinical awareness of the parameters other than postoperative anemia may be crucial. Thus, improvements in HRQoL scores were poor in early readmitted patients 1 year after surgery.

Assessment of endodontically treated teeth by using different radiographic methods: an ex vivo comparison between CBCT and other radiographic techniques

        Kemal Özgür Demiralp,Kivanç Kamburŏglu,Kahraman Güngör,Selcen Yüksel,Gokcen Demiralp,Özlem Üçok 대한구강악안면방사선학회 2012 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.42 No.3

Purpose: To compare different radiographic methods for assessing endodontically treated teeth. Materials and Methods: Root canal treatments were applied in 120 extracted mandibular teeth, which were divided into four groups: (1) ideal root canal treatment (60 teeth), (2) insufficient lateral condensation (20 teeth), (3) root canals filled short of the apex (20 teeth), (4) overfilled root canal treatment (20 teeth). The teeth were imaged using intraoral film, panoramic film, digital intraoral systems (CCD and PSP), CCD obtained with portable X-ray source, digital panoramic, and CBCT images obtained at 0.3 mm3 and 0.2 mm3 voxel size. Images were evaluated separately by three observers, twice. Kappa coefficients were calculated. The percentage of correct readings obtained from each modality was calculated and compared using a t-test (p⁄0.05). Results: The intra-observer kappa for each observer ranged between 0.327 and 0.849. The inter-observer kappa for each observer for both readings ranged between 0.312 and 0.749. For the ideal root canal treatment group, CBCT with 0.2 mm3 voxel images revealed the best results. For insufficient lateral condensation, the best readings were found with periapical film followed by CCD and PSP. The assessment of teeth with root canals filled short of the apex showed the highest percentage of correct readings by CBCT and CCD. For the overfilled canal treatment group, PSP images and conventional periapical film radiographs had the best scores. Conclusion: CBCT was found to be successful in the assessment of teeth with ideal root canal treatment and teeth with canals filled short of the apex.

Comparison of micro-computerized tomography and cone-beam computerized tomography in the detection of accessory canals in primary molars

Acar, Buket,Kamburoglu, Kivanc,Tatar, Ilkan,Arikan, Volkan,Celik, Hakan Hamdi,Yuksel, Selcen,Ozen, Tuncer Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2015 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.45 No.4

Purpose: This study was performed to compare the accuracy of micro-computed tomography (CT) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in detecting accessory canals in primary molars. Materials and Methods: Forty-one extracted human primary first and second molars were embedded in wax blocks and scanned using micro-CT and CBCT. After the images were taken, the samples were processed using a clearing technique and examined under a stereomicroscope in order to establish the gold standard for this study. The specimens were classified into three groups: maxillary molars, mandibular molars with three canals, and mandibular molars with four canals. Differences between the gold standard and the observations made using the imaging methods were calculated using Spearman's rho correlation coefficient test. Results: The presence of accessory canals in micro-CT images of maxillary and mandibular root canals showed a statistically significant correlation with the stereomicroscopic images used as a gold standard. No statistically significant correlation was found between the CBCT findings and the stereomicroscopic images. Conclusion: Although micro-CT is not suitable for clinical use, it provides more detailed information about minor anatomical structures. However, CBCT is convenient for clinical use but may not be capable of adequately analyzing the internal anatomy of primary teeth.
