This review provides a comprehensive summary of the PCR primers and profiles currently in use in our laboratory for red algal DNA barcoding and phylogenetic research. While work focuses on florideophyte taxa, many of the markers have been applied successfully to the Bangiales, as well as other lineages previously assigned to the Bangiophyceae sensu lato. All of the primers currently in use with their respective amplification profiles and strategies are provided, which can include full fragment, overlapping fragments and what might best be called "informed overlapping fragments", i.e., a fragment for a marker is amplified and sequenced for a taxon and those sequence data are then used to identify the best primers to amplify the remaining fragment(s) for that marker. We extend this strategy for the more variable markers with sequence from the external PCR primers used to "inform" the selection of internal sequencing primers. This summary will hopefully serve as a useful resource to systematists in the red algal community.
The effect of vehicle velocity and drift angle on through-body AUV tunnel thruster performance
Saunders, Aaron,Nahon, Meyer Techno-Press 2011 Ocean systems engineering Vol.1 No.4
New applications of streamlined Autonomous Underwater Vehicles require an AUV capable of completing missions with both high-speed straight-line runs and slow maneuvers or station keeping tasks. At low, or zero, forward speeds, the AUV's control surfaces become ineffective. To improve an AUV's low speed maneuverability, while maintaining a low drag profile, through-body tunnel thrusters have become a popular addition to modern AUV systems. The effect of forward vehicle motion and sideslip on these types of thrusters is not well understood. In order to characterize these effects and to adapt existing tunnel thruster models to include them, an experimental system was constructed. This system includes a transverse tunnel thruster mounted in a streamlined AUV. A 6-axis load cell mounted internally was used to measure the thrust directly. The AUV was mounted in Memorial University of Newfoundland's tow tank, and several tests were run to characterize the effect of vehicle motion on the transient and steady state thruster performance. Finally, a thruster model was modified to include these effects.

The transformation of the world economy has put social policy in a constant state of flux. Despite continued economic growth through the 1990s in many industrial countries, unemployment has remained high In many parts of Asia, the events of 1997 highighted the fragile nature of economic growth and the tragic consequences of unexpected and sudden recession.

Understanding international consumer preferences and attitudes towards food is important for countries like New Zealand that depend heavily on food exports. New Zealand’s export focus has changed over the last few decades from almost all exports going to Europe, to more into Asian markets, in particular to China. It is therefore important that different cultures and preferences in these markets are considered and understood. This paper will present results from a pilot survey in six countries (UK, Korea, Japan, India, China and Indonesia) focusing on how consumers in different markets respond to different attributes and on how New Zealand producers can communicate those using smart technology and digital media in overseas markets. The results highlight the importance of food safety and health foods in these markets. In general, developing countries valued attributes more than developed countries. This included environmental quality in food which was also seen as key for underpinning food safety. In addition, the study examined the potential impact of varying levels of premiums for food attributes on there turns to the agricultural sectors of the EU (European Union-28) and New Zealand using the partial equilibrium Lincoln Trade and Environment Model (LTEM). Trade model projections showed that the potential impact on the revenue for agriculture was important.
Joint Strength in High Speed Friction Stir Spot Welded DP 980 Steel
Nathan Saunders,Michael Miles,Trent Hartman,Yuri Hovanski,Sung-Tae Hong,Russell Steel 한국정밀공학회 2014 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol. No.
High speed friction stir spot welding was applied to 1.2 mm thick DP 980 steel sheets under different welding conditions, using PCBNtools. The range of vertical feed rates used during welding was 2.5~102 mm per minute, while the range of spindle speeds was 2500~6000 rpm. Extended testing was carried out for five different sets of welding conditions, until tool failure. These welding conditionsresulted in vertical welding loads of 3.6~8.2 kN and lap shear tension failure loads of 8.9~11.1 kN. PCBN tools were shown, in thebest case, to provide lap shear tension failure loads at or above 9 kN for 900 spot welds, after which tool failure caused a rapid dropin joint strength. Joint strength was shown to be strongly correlated to bond area, which was measured from weld cross sections. Failure modes of the tested joints were a function of bond area and softening that occurred in the heat-affected zone.
