Sorbent Extraction of Some Metal Ions on a Gas Chromatographic Stationary Phase Prior to Their Flame Atomic Absorption Determinations

Soylak, M.,Saracoglu, S.,Elci, L. Korean Chemical Society 2003 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.24 No.5

An enrichment/separation system for atomic absorption spectrometric determinations of Cu(Ⅱ), Fe(Ⅲ), Ni(Ⅱ) and Co(Ⅱ) has been established. The procedure is based on the adsorption of the analytes as calmagite chelates on Chromosorb-102. The effects of some parameters including pH, amount of ligand, salt matrix, flow rates of sample and eluent solutions were investigated. Under optimized conditions, the relative standard deviation of the combined method of sample treatment, preconcentration and determination with FAAS (N=5) is generally lower than 5%. The limit of detection (3σ) was between 6.0-112.9 ㎍/L. The results were used for preconcentration of analytes from some sodium and ammonium salt.

Experimental and ab initio Computational Studies on Dimethyl-(4-{4-{3-methyl-3-phenyl-cyclobutyl)-thiazol-2-yl]-hydrazonomethyl}-phenyl)-amine

Yuksektepe, Cigdem,Saracoglu, Hanife,Caliskan, Nezihe,Yilmaz, Ibrahim,Cukurovali, Alaaddin Korean Chemical Society 2010 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.31 No.12

A new hydrazone derivative compound has been synthesized and characterized by IR, $^1H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR and UV-vis. spectroscopy techniques, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). The new compound crystallizes in monoclinic space group C2/c. In addition to the crystal structure from X-ray experiment, the molecular geometry, vibrational frequencies and frontier molecular orbitals analysis of the title compound in the ground state have been calculated by using the HF/6-31G(d, p), B3LYP/6-311G(d, p) and B3LYP/6-31G(d, p) methods. The computed vibrational frequencies are used to determine the types of molecular motions associated with each of the observed experimental bands. To determine conformational flexibility, molecular energy profile of (1) was obtained by semi-empirical (AM1) calculation with respect to a selected degree of torsional freedom, which was varied from $-180^{\circ}$ to $+180^{\circ}$ in steps of $10^{\circ}$. Molecular electrostatic potential of the compound was also performed by the theoretical method.

Neuro-Fuzzy modeling of torsional strength of RC beams

        A. Cevik,R. Saracoglu,M.H. Arslan 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2012 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.9 No.6

This paper presents Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) based empirical modelling of torsional strength of RC beams for the first time in literature. The proposed model is based on fuzzy rules. The experimental database used for NF modelling is collected from the literature consisting of 76 RC beam tests. The input variables in the developed rule based on NF model are cross-sectional area of beams, dimensions of closed stirrups, spacing of stirrups, cross-sectional area of one-leg of closed stirrup, yield strength of stirrup and longitudinal reinforcement, steel ratio of stirrups, steel ratio of longitudinal reinforcement and concrete compressive strength. According to the selected variables, the formulated NFs were trained by using 60 of the 76 sample beams. Then, the method was tested with the other 16 sample beams. The accuracy rates were found to be about 96% for total set. The performance of accuracy of proposed NF model is furthermore compared with existing design codes by using the same database and found to be by far more accurate. The use of NF provided an alternative way for estimating the torsional strength of RC beams. The outcomes of this study are quite satisfactory which may serve NF approach to be widely used in further applications in the field of reinforced concrete structures.

      • The Effects of Educational Level on Breast Cancer Awareness: A Cross-Sectional Study in Turkey

Gurdal, Sibel Ozkan,Saracoglu, Gamze Varol,Oran, Ebru Sen,Yankol, Yucel,Soybir, Gursel Remzi Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.1

Breast self-examination (BSE) is important for early diagnosis of breast cancer (BC). However, the majority of Turkish women do not perform regular BSE. We aimed to evaluate the effects of education level on the attitudes and behaviors of women towards BSE. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 413 women (20-59 years), divided into university graduates (Group I, n = 224) and high school or lower graduates (Group II, n = 189). They completed a 22-item scale assessing the knowledge level, attitudes and behaviors regarding BSE, and the Turkish version of the Champion's Revised Health Belief Model. A significantly higher number of women in Group II did not believe in early diagnosis of BC. A significantly higher number of Group I had conducted BSE at least once, and their BSE frequency was also significantly high. Moreover, a significantly lower number of Group I women considered themselves to not be at risk for BC and the scores for "perceived susceptibility" and "perceived barriers" were significantly higher. Logistic regression analysis identified the university graduate group to have a higher likelihood of performing BSE, by 1.8 times. Higher educational levels were positively associated with BSE performance. Overall, the results suggest that Turkish women, regardless of their education level, need better education on BSE. Consideration of the education level in women will help clinicians develop more effective educational programs, resulting in more regular practice and better use of BSE.

Procedural and Early Outcomes of Two Re-entry Devices for Subintimal Recanalization of Aortoiliac and Femoropopliteal Chronic Total Occlusions

Ertan Vuruskan,Erhan Saracoglu 대한심장학회 2017 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.47 No.1

Background and Objectives: Subintimal angioplasty is a common treatment choice for chronic total occlusions (CTO) in the iliac and femoropopliteal arteries. This article describes the technical aspects and early outcomes of two different re-entry devices and comparison with manual re-entry technique. Subjects and Methods: A retrospective review of 61 patients (re-entry group) treated with Outback or Pioneer Plus catheters was carried out. A matched cohort of patients (n=62) who underwent lower extremity interventions without the use of re-entry devices (manual reentry group) were also analyzed (overall 123 patients were analyzed). Procedural success, procedural durations, patency estimates, anklebrachial indices, and complications were analyzed. Results: Sixty-one patients underwent Outback or Pioneer Plus guided subintimal recanalization. After the procedure, ankle-brachial indices significantly increased in all patients during follow-up. Primary patency for the entire cohort was 83% in the first month. When the re-entry device group was compared with manual re-entry group, no difference was found with respect to success, complication, and patencies between the two groups during follow-up. However, procedure duration and the amount of contrast agent used was significantly decreased in re-entry groups (p<0.001). Also, re-entry time was significantly decreased in Pioneer plus group according to Outback group (p<0.001) Conclusion: Recanalization of CTO using re-entry devices for aortoiliac or femoropopliteal arteries is safe and effective. These devices shorten the procedure time, the re-entry time, reduce radiation risk, and reduce the amount of contrast agent employed.

Antioxidant Capacity and Chemical Properties of Selected Barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.) Fruits

Mustafa Ozgen,Onur Saracoglu,Esma Nur Gecer 한국원예학회 2012 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.53 No.6

Six purple-black barberry accessions (Berberis vulgaris L.) were obtained from various sites in Sivas province of Turkey. Fruits were analyzed for their total phenolic (TP), total monomeric anthocyanin (TMA) contents and for their antioxidant capacity by the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and TEAC assays. Sugar and organic acid composition were also determined by HPLC. TP and TMA contents were measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and pH differential methods, respectively. Variability between the accessions was not high. Variability among accessions was greatest for FRAP content (C.V. 17.9%); individuals ranged from 41.0 to 65.6 µmol TE・g-1on a fresh weight basis. Variation among the accessions was also evident for TP, TMA, and TEAC values (C.V. 16.21%, 14.85%, and 7.13%, respectively). The major sugars of barberry fruits were glucose (8.84 g・100 mL-1) and fructose (6.12 g・100 mL-1) and dominant organic acids were malic (7.59 g・100 mL-1) and citric (1.34 g・100 mL-1). Within this limited study of six different accessions, chemical profile and antioxidant capacity of barberry fruits have rich source of natural antioxidant substances.

Methodology to Detect Bus Stop Influence Zones Utilizing Facebook Prophet Changepoint Detection Method

Abdullah Maltas,Halit Ozen,Abdulsamet Saracoglu 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.10

Travel time of buses, a major part of the urban public transit system, is affected by various factors and foremost are the bus stops. In addition to the dwell time at the stop, the deceleration and acceleration zones reduce average speed, particularly in mixed traffic, and increase travel time. Several approaches are used in estimating the link-based travel time of public transit systems in transportation planning, but Bus Stop Influence Zones (BSIZs) are ignored. Moreover, fuel consumption and pollutant emissions increase in BSIZs, and this demonstrates the importance of BSIZs in measuring the performance of public transit systems as well as planning. Data obtained from the Automatic Vehicle Location system was used and visualized on Geographic Information System and data preprocessing steps were performed. Finally, changepoint detection method of Facebook Prophet (FBP-CDM) was exploited to identify changepoints in location-speed data on the selected route. Results were validated with real-life data and expert opinion, and then compared with the findings acquired by the K-means clustering. Based on the conclusions, FBP-CDM was found quite effective in detecting and predicting BSIZs accurately and the proposed methodology is useful for studies in transportation planning and operations.

( Hilal Kaya Erdogan ),( Isil Bulur ),( Zeynep Nurhan Saracoglu ),( Muzaffer Bilgin ) 대한피부과학회 2018 Annals of Dermatology Vol.30 No.3

Background: Rosacea is a common dermatosis characterized by erythema, telangiectasia, papules and pustules. Objective: We aimed to evaluate contact sensitivity in the rosacea patients. Methods: We included 65 rosacea patients and 60 healthy volunteers in the study. The patient and control groups were patch tested with European baseline series and cosmetic series. Results: A positive reaction to at least 1 allergen in the European standard series was found in 32.3% of rosacea patients and 20.0% of subjects in the control group while the relevant numbers were 30.8% of rosacea patients and 10% of controls with the cosmetic series (p=0.08). In total, we found a positive reaction to at least 1 allergen in 38.5% of patients and 25.0% of controls (p=0.15). We did not find a statistically significant relationship between a positive reaction to 1 allergen in total and the gender, skin type, rosacea type, ocular involvement, age and disease duration. There were more symptoms in patients with a positive reaction to allergens (p<0.001). Conclusion: Contact sensitivity was detected more common in rosacea patients. Patch testing may be useful in the treatment and follow up of rosacea patients especially if symptoms such as itching, burning and stinging are present. (Ann Dermatol 30(3) 290∼295, 2018)

Antinociceptive, Free Radical–Scavenging, and Cytotoxic Activities of Acanthus hirsutus Boiss

        Ummuhan Sebnem Harput,Okan Arihan,Alper B. Iskit,Akito Nagatsu,Iclal Saracoglu 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.7

In vivo antinociceptive and in vitro radical scavenging and cytotoxic activities of Acanthus hirsutus Boiss. aqueous extract were investigated to give a new insight into plant usage in traditional medicine. The extract showed significant antinociceptive activity in acetic acid–induced writhing test in mice after oral application and did not change the hind-leg retraction period in the hot-plate test for any dose applied. In addition, the extract showed radical-scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl, nitric oxide, and superoxide radicals similar to those of standard compounds 3-t-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and quercetin. The gallic acid equivalent total phenolic content of the plant was found to be 65.4 mg/g dry extract. Cytotoxic activity of the aqueous extract was tested against 3 different cancer cell lines—Hep-2 (human larynx epidermoid carcinoma), RD (human rhabdomyosarcoma), and L20B (transgenic murine L cells)—and 1 noncancerous cell line (VERO) using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide method. Through the phytochemical studies, the following compounds were isolated: 3 lignan glucosides [(–)-syringaresinol-di-O-β-glucopyranoside, (–)-medioresinol-di-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, (–)-pinoresinol-4′-O-β-glucopyranoside], 2 benzoxazinoids [2-hydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one, (2R)-2-O-β-glucopyranosyl-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one], 4 phenylethanoid glycosides (acteoside, leucosceptoside A, martynoside, hattushoside), and 2 phenylpropanoid glucosides (sinapyl aldehyde-4-O-β-glucopyranoside, sinapyl alcohol-4-O-β-glucopyranoside). Cytotoxic and radical-scavenging activities of the isolated compounds were also determined. 2-hydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one and acteoside were the most active compounds in both experiments.
