This study was aimed to find out whether there was some difference comparing front-observing rate, lane separation distance, brake reaction speed and heart rate between a smart phone and a button type of general phone while driving in a driving environment using a driving simulator. The subjects were composed of 10 males in their twenties, the road situation of three-lane road was copied as a driving environment, and the subjects were instructed to keep 50m lane distance from the car ahead, driving with a constant speed of 70km/h. In this driving condition, the subjects were instructed to send the contents of given text message with a smart phone and a general phone respectively. As a result of test, in front-observing rate, it decreased with a significant difference (p<0.001) when sending a text message with a smart phone, compared with both when not sending it and when sending it with a button type of general phone. Also, in lane separation distance and heart rate, they increased with significant difference (p<0.05) when sending a text message, compared with when not sending it, however, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) according to the method of sending a text message. In brake reaction rate, it increased with a significant difference (p>0.05) when sending a text message with a smart phone compared with when not sending a text message.

Seo, Hun-Chul,Jang, Won-Hyeok,Kim, Chul-Hwan,Chung, Young-Hwan,Lee, Dong-Su,Rhee, Sang-Bong The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2013 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.8 No.1
Very Fast Transients (VFT) originate mainly from disconnector switching operations in Gas Insulated Substations (GIS). In order to determine the rate-of-rise of Very Fast Transient Overvoltage (VFTO) in a 550 kV GIS, simulations are carried out using EMTP-RV. Each component of the GIS is modeled by distributed line model and lumped model based on equivalent circuits. The various switching conditions according to closing point-on-wave and trapped charge are simulated, and the results are analyzed. Also, the analysis of travelling wave using a lattice diagram is conducted to verify the simulation results.

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors represent a promising group of anticancer agents. Treatment of cancer cells with HDAC blockers, such as suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA), leads to the activation of apoptosis-promoting genes. To enhance proapoptotic efficiency, SAHA has been used in conjunction with radiation, kinase inhibitors, and cytotoxic drugs. In the present study, we show that at the suboptimal dose of 250 muM, sulindac [2-[6-fluoro-2-methyl-3-[(4-methylsulfinylphenyl)methylidene]inden-1-yl]-acetic acid] significantly enhances SAHA-induced growth suppression and apoptosis of A549 human non-small cell lung cancer cells, primarily via enhanced collapse of the mitochondrial membrane potential, release of cytochrome c, and caspase activation. Furthermore, sulindac/SAHA cotreatment induced marked down-regulation of survivin at both the mRNA and protein levels and stimulated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which were blocked by the antioxidant N-acetyl-l-cysteine. Overexpression of survivin was associated with reduced sulindac/SAHA-induced apoptosis of A549 cells, whereas suppression of survivin levels with antisense oligonucleotides or small interfering RNA further sensitized cells to sulindac/SAHA-induced cell death. Our results collectively demonstrate that sulindac/SAHA-induced apoptosis is mediated by ROS-dependent down-regulation of survivin in lung cancer cells.

Isoprene has the potential to replace some petroleum-based chemicals and can be produced through biological systems using renewable carbon sources. Ralstonia eutropha can produce value-added compounds, including intracellular polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) through fatty acid and lipid metabolism. In the present study, we engineered strains of R. eutropha H16 and examined the strains for isoprene production. We optimized codons of all the genes involved in isoprene synthesis by the mevalonate pathway and manipulated the promoter regions using pLac and pJ5 elements. Our results showed that isoprene productivity was higher using the J5 promoter (1.9 ± 0.24 μg/l) than when using the lac promoter (1.5 ± 0.2 μg/l). Additionally, the use of three J5 promoters was more efficient (3.8 ± 0.18 μg/l) for isoprene production than a one-promoter system, and could be scaled up to a 5-L batch-cultivation from a T-flask culture. Although the isoprene yield obtained in our study was insufficient to meet industrial demands, our study, for the first time, shows that R. eutropha can be modified for efficient isoprene production and lays the foundation for further optimization of the fermentation process.

Increased fat intake is known to be a major cause of prostate cancer. In this study, we investigated the effect of dietary high fat on prostate intraepithelial neoplasia using transgenic adenocarcinoma mouse prostate (TRAMP) mice. Six-week-old male TRAMP mice were fed AIN93G (control group, 4.0 kcal/kg, n=6) and AIN93G-HFD (experimental group, 4.8 kcal/kg, n=7) for 10 weeks. Prostate histopathology, urogenital tract (UGT) weight, epididymal white adipose tissue weight, argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) counts, and serum leptin levels were examined. AIN93G-HFD fed group showed progressed neoplastic lesions in the prostate (P<0.05) compared to AIN93G fed group. AIN93G-HFD intake resulted in a increase in the weight of UGT (P<0.05) and epididymal white adipose tissue. The number of Ag-NOR positive dots significantly increased in each prostate lobe and final serum leptin levels in AIN93G-HFD fed group were about twice those of AIN93G fed group (P<0.05). Dietary high fat was related to the prostate cancer progression in the early stage of TRAMP mice and increased serum leptin levels, suggesting that the regulation of dietary components could delay the progression of prostate cancer.

With the improvement of industrial society, high quality electrical energy, simplification of operation and maintenance, and ensuring reliability are being required. Also we request an urgent change from SF? gas to an environment-friendly gas insulation material. In this paper, the experiments of breakdown characteristics by pressure and gap change of N₂/O₂ mixture gas through a GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) model were described. This paper reviews basic data of the surface discharge characteristics for Teflon resin in not only pure N2, N₂:O₂ mixture gas as being focused on environmentally-friendly insulating gas, but also SF?. Also, insulation characteristics by breakdown voltage and surface discharge voltage of N₂:O₂ mixture gas in the experimental chamber were studied.

Background/Aims: No standard chemotherapy has been established for advanced gallbladder cancer. The authors studied the activity and tolerability of a gemcitabine and ox-aliplatin (GEMOX) combination in unresectable gallbladder cancer (GBC). Methods: Adult patients with pathologically confirmed unresectable GBC were prospectively recruited at three centers. No patient had received prior chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Patients received cycles of gemcitabine at 1,000 mg/m2 on day 1, followed by oxaliplatin at 100 mg/m2 on day 2, every 2 weeks. The primary study endpoint was time to progression. Results: Forty patients with unresect-able GBC were enrolled. The median age was 60 years (range, 38 to 79 years). All patients showed good performance status. Of the 33 analyzable patients, 12 achieved partial re-sponse (36%), 17 stable disease (52%), and four progressive disease (12%). No patient achieved a complete response. The tumor control rate was 88%. At a median follow-up of 6.8 months, the median time to progression was 5.3 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.7 to 6.9), and median overall survival was 6.8 months (95% CI, 6.1 to 7.5). Nine of the 40 patients (23%) experienced at least a grade-3 adverse event, but no patient experienced a grade-4 adverse event. Conclu-sions: GEMOX combination therapy is a feasible option and is well tolerated in unresectable GBC. (Gut Liver 2013;7:594-598)
