        Korean Relativization

Salleh, Ramli Md. 서울대학교 어학연구소 1983 語學硏究 Vol.19 No.1

There are almost as many definitions of relative clauses as there are writers on the subject. For this paper, I am taking the definition by de Rijk (1972), which combines both syntactic and semantic features. He defines a relative clause to be a "sentence modifying a noun phrase, such that the deep structure of the sentence contains a noun phrase identical to the noun phrase it modifies" (p. 115). This definition tells us that, to be considered as a relative clause, a sentence must modify a noun phrase(NP), (this head noun can either precede or follow its modifying sentence depending on the language) and it must contain an NP coreferential to the head NP in the deep structure.

Forestry in Malaysia : An Institutional Overview

        Salleh Mohd . Nor 한국산림과학회 1987 한국산림과학회지 Vol.76 No.3

Forestry as with all land matters, under the Constitution, is a State matter. Thus the States, numbering 14, have considerable. autonomy in decisions on forestry and related matters. However, the Federal Government, having jurisdiction over such issues as defence, education and research, endeavours to coordinate, standardise and advise the States on matters where the States have jurisdiction. However, forestry being a major revenue earner, is jealously guarded by the States. Under such circumstances and recognising the interdependencies of impacts of decisions at the State level, the institutional organisations play an important role in coordinating state activities to ensure that the benefits to the country as a whole are not sacrificed :n favour of interests of individual state. Various legislative mechanisms have been established to ensure this coordinated effort. A rational ForestryCouncil forms the apes of national political coordination. The Federal Forestry Department is responsible for coordination of developmental activities at the State level, which are implemented be the State Forestry Departments within Peninsular Malaysia. Research is carried out centrally by the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia FRI1ti, a statutory body formed in 1985 from a research division of the Forestry Department. The Staves of Sabah and Sarawak have their own Forestry Departments, independent of the Federal Department, and each with its own research unit independent of FRIM. Tertiary education in forestry is the sole responsibility of the Agricultural University at Serdang with a campus for Diploma level training in Sarawak. 1n the developmental area in the State of Sabah, institutions have been formed to focus on specific areas of activities. The Sabah Foundation is responsible for the long term development of the State forests with a concession of about one million ha. Sahah Forest Development Authority (SAFODA) was formed to carry out reforestation of denuded areas. Sabah Forest Industries Ltd. (SFI) is responsible for the country`s only integrated pulp and paper industry with its own afforestation program to support its resource supply. In Peninsular Malaysia various states have established State Corporations to manage large $quot;sustained yield$quot; concessions. While wildlife and state parks are managed by the respective forestry departments in Sabah and Sarawak, it is The responsibility of a separate department in Peninsula Malaysia called the Department of Wildlife and National Parks(under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment) . Timber trade legislation and promotion in the Peninsular is the responsibility of the Malaysian Timber Industries Board(MTIB) for Peninsular Malaysia and the Sarawak Timber Industries Development Corporation (STIDC) in Sarawak. In the area of 1\GOs : the Institute of Foresters Malaysia, is the professional body of forestry in the country. A Malaysian Forestry Society caters fc-,r the public participation and interest. l)ther environmentally related NGOs such as the Malayan Nature Society, the Environmental Protection Society, World Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth and the Consumers Associations also involve themselves in specific forestry activities. A number of timber trade associations are also formed by the private sector to assist the industries.

High Plasma Sphingosine 1-phosphate Levels Predict Osteoporotic Fractures in Postmenopausal Women: The Center of Excellence for Osteoporosis Research Study

        Mohammed-Salleh M. Ardawi,Abdulrahim A. Rouzi,Nawal S. Al-Senani,Mohammed H. Qari,Ayman Z. Elsamanoudy,Shaker A. Mousa 대한골대사학회 2018 대한골대사학회지 Vol.25 No.2

Background: Higher sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) plasma levels are associated with decreased bone mineral density (BMD), and increased risk of prevalent vertebral fracture. So, we hypothesized that postmenopausal women with increased baseline plasma S1P levels have a greater risk for future incident fracture (osteoporosis-related fractures [ORFs]). Methods: This study was conducted in a prospective longitudinal cohort of 707 women recruited in 2004 and followed up annually for a mean period of 5.2±1.3 years. They were postmenopausal (aged ≥50 years). The primary outcome measure was the time to the first confirmed ORF event using radiographs and/or a surgical report. Results: The plasma S1P levels (μmol/L) were significantly higher in the women with incident fracture (7.23±0.79) than in those without ORFs (5.02±0.51; P<0.001). High S1P levels were strongly associated with increased fracture risk. After adjustment for age and other confounders, the hazard ratio (HR) was 6.12 (95% confidence interval [CI], 4.92-7.66) for each 1-standard deviation increase in plasma S1P levels. The women in the highest quartile of S1P levels had a significant increase in fracture risk (HR, 9.89; 95% CI, 2.83-34.44). Results were similar when we compared plasma S1P levels at the 1-year visit. Conclusions: The associations between plasma S1P levels and fracture risk were independent of BMD and other confounders. These findings demonstrate that high plasma S1P level at baseline and at years 1 to 5 is a strong and independent risk factor for future [ORFs] among postmenopausal women and could be a useful biomarker for fracture risk assessment in this population.

An Importance-Performance Analysis of Sustainable Service Quality in Water and Sewerage Companies

        Abrari Salleh,Sha’ri Mohd Yusof,Norazli Othman 대한산업공학회 2019 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.18 No.1

Sustainable service quality (SUSSERV) is crucial to identify how far the company able to meet customers’ expectations will determine its sustainability. SUSSERV model with six independent variables namely tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and sustainability has been developed by modifying the SERVQUAL instrument. This research employed a survey with quota sampling technique through 500 questionnaires comprised of 250 each to the customers of water (WC) and sewerage (SC) companies in the state of Selangor, Federal Territory (F.T.) Putrajaya and F.T. Kuala Lumpur. WC’s on the perceived service quality for all SUSSERV dimensions were much lower than SC. It was also found that there were no significant differences between the means of perceptions with the exception of eight out of 31 variables and three out of 31 variables in the category of Services (Water and Sewerage) and in Living Status (Type of Houses) respectively. The importance-performance analysis (IPA) indicates that the Assurance and Responsiveness dimensions were at high levels but Sustainability dimension was low for both performance (perceptions) and importance (expectations). The advantage of using the IPA is to assist companies to improve their services. The IPA indicates that both WC and SC services are rated as very reliable by the customers despite the dissatisfaction of majority of the customers with the services rendered by both companies investigated in the study. The main contribution of this study is the successful utilization of a modified SERVQUAL instrument that can measure sustainable service quality. Future research should focus on extending the use of this instrument in other states to further validate and test this instrument.

A structured career intervention program for academically challenged students

Amla Salleh 서울대학교 교육연구소 2013 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.14 No.2

A study was carried out to test the effects of a 2-week structured intervention program on academically challenged students’ career development. A quasi-experimental study was designed using pre-tests, post-tests, and a control group approach to examine the effects of the intervention program. Data were collected from both the experimental and control groups. The test was carried out on eight schools in the state of Kedah in Malaysia. Eight school counselors were trained to facilitate the assignment to the experimental groups and to collect data. A total number of 335 students with low academic achievement participated in this study. This number included male (43.6 %) and female (56.4 %) students who were aged 15–16 and a half. Modes of measurement used consisted of a career planning inventory (measuring career planning skills), an academic learning motivation scale (measuring attitude toward academic learning), and an academic study skills test (measuring academic study competencies). Analysis was performed using t-tests and the multivariate analysis of variance to examine the differences in the mean scores. The results show that the sample’s career academic score improved significantly from the pre-test to the post-test. A simple regression analysis was also performed to see the effect of the intervention program on the three dependent variables, which revealed that the career intervention program has positive and significant effects on the three variables. However, further studies on the career program for academically challenged students are highly recommended to support the present study.

Online counseling using email: a qualitative study

        Amla Salleh,Ramlan Hamzah,Norazah Nordin,Simin Ghavifekr,Toktam Namyandeh Joorabchi 서울대학교 교육연구소 2015 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.16 No.4

Despite numerous studies in increasingly popular online mental health service, the nature of the relationship between online counselors and their clients, particularly in the email modality, deserves more attention. To enhance the knowledge in this area, this study was conducted to explore whether the online counseling relationship could be developed using email communication. Six qualified counselors and 59 clients volunteered to participate in the study. Using a qualitative approach, we collected data from two focus groups, individual interviews with participating counselors, 206 email interactions, and counselors’ journals. To identify themes, we employed a grounded theory method. The emergent themes suggest that counselors describe the e-counseling relationship as having the following five features: initial establishment of a virtual relationship, structuring, text reinforcement, the development of a text relationship, and termination of the process. Each feature reflects a different level of relationship and different characteristics. Implications for future studies are also discussed.
