This study analyzes early sculpture works done in Colombia by Doris Salcedo, currently based in Bogotá, Colombia, and her large-scale installations in various countries around the world. It appraises the representation strategies and political implications presented by Salcedo to show the trauma of victims political violence, oppression and discrimination and to reveal the core of the violence. Even now, countless people in many countries around the world are still constantly suffering from various kinds of political violence, oppression and its traumatic aftermath. However, discourse and media have limitations of making victims invisible by narrating the existence of victims and the history of suffering in a linear structure and representing victims with images of dead bodies. In this context, Salcedo's representation strategy is significant in that she considers the theme of political violence and oppression based on victims’ sentiment and psychology. She reveals the trauma of their pain, fear and loss, which was not seen by discourse and the media, without any specific visual images related to the violence and its victims. The brutal civil war and political violence event in Colombia, sparked by the conflict between the two parties in the mid-nineteenth century, are still ongoing. This is the tragic socio-political background of Colombia that Salcedo had to go through since her birth, and it has made her constantly interested in victims’ collapsed everyday life littered by anxiety and fear, and ultimately laid the foundation for her research of how their trauma could be represented as art. Salcedo resisted images of violence represented by Colombian artists at that time and the images of dead bodies shown by the media in the 1990s. She then established her own visual language and direction of political art for artistic images that can reveal the profound and complex dimensions of violence itself based on the influence of Beatriz González, Joseph Beuys, and Marcel Duchamp on socio-political art concepts and forms. Based on victims’ empirical testimony about traumatic events, Salcedo transforms their private everyday objects into unfamiliar figures as a basic form of early sculptures, and extends them into large-scale installations. This strategy evokes familiar but unfamiliar sense and draws a careful attention and consideration towards violent events. This reveals the core of a traumatic event, which is fundamentally impossible to represent, through the process of making the audiences find out the truth behind the event and its trace on their own. At this point, the concept of ‘fiction’ by a political philosopher Jacques Ranciére, who reconsidered the concept of ‘image’ and ‘representation’ and presented a new strategy of representation and its political possibility for ‘unrepresentability’ like trauma, is significant. Through her two works, <Atrabiliarios> and <Noviembre 6 y 7>, Salcedo demonstrates ‘fiction’ that brings actual reality to our daily lives by constructing objects with traces of victims to trigger their traumatic memories. The structure of common sense about reality formed through media is reconstituted ‘here and now’. ‘Fiction’, an act of reconstructing reality, is a representation strategy of trauma devised by Salcedo and the core of the unique political intention of her art, which is “metapolitics”. Salcedo does not call for any sense or action to change reality through art. The core of her art’s political intention does not lies in the political material or content of a work, but in the form of artwork that can refabricate our senses and perceptual structures in relation to a certain event or object. The ‘fiction’ as a new strategy of representation in Salcedo’s artwork and her consideration of its political implication opens up the possibility that Doris Salcedo as a ‘political artist’ could be reexamined.

This study aimed to investigate and understand the behavior of leachate and the fate of its antibiotic resistance. A synthetic leachate was formulated and monitored for more than 2 years. This is done to simulate the fate of antibiotic resistance in leachate from anaerobic carcass landfill site. Three anaerobic reactors were set-up. Initially, Escherichia coli DH5α with tetracycline resistance pB10 plasmid was inoculated in nutrient rich anaerobic reactors. The fate of tetracycline-resistant bacteria (TRB) was tracked by analysis using culture-based method, EC50 (half maximal effective concentration), and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Though the EC50 profile looks maintained, values during the second year shows lower standard deviation. Interestingly, pB10 plasmid has the same pattern. While the two parameters agreed with each other, the TRB time profile decreased after 300 days or almost one year. At the end of experiment, the tetracycline resistance microbial communities were investigated by 16s RNA gene-based pyro sequencing. The results of this study indicated that leachate with high organic strength in anaerobic conditions could be an antibiotic resistant point source in several year periods. To simulate the treatment of leachate, the effects of the solids retention time (SRT), using sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), was investigated. This is done to see the fate of antibiotic resistance in the leachate sample. SRTs were varied to see its influence on antibiotic resistance. Escherichia coli DH5a was used as the representative tetracycline-resistant bacteria with multiple antibiotic-resistant genes encoded in plasmid pB10. SRT contributed to an increase in antibiotic resistance in SBR C (SRT 25 days) with TRB values up to 1.25 x 107 CFU mL-1 which is one log higher than the influent. Microbial community analysis of the DNA samples from effluent of SBR C showed four major phyla: Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria under which are ecologically-important microbial species. It was shown that antibiotic resistance genes cannot be eliminated during treatment of synthetic carcass leachate in a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor. Lastly, the fate of antibiotic resistance in an effluent after ozone disinfection was investigated by comparing the ARB and ARG removal efficiencies of ozonation using pure culture in buffer and using E. coli pB10 in wastewater samples. Based on the results, ozonation on E. coli K-12, as a representative of non-ARB, showed higher removal efficiencies than the samples inoculated with antibiotic-resistant E. coli. Another aspect of this study is monitoring the fate of antibiotic resistance in the wastewater effluent. It was found out that ARB and ARGs still perpetuated in the last stage of effluent disinfection showing that treatment in WWTPs is not effective in eliminating the antibiotic resistance.

Foreign exchange crisis in Latin American markets : comparison before and after with OECD countries
Kimberly Stephany, Salcedo Contreras
This paper describes a macroeconomic analysis for some countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela, between 1980 to 2015, when various financial and banking crisis had happened. After a comparison with OECD members that not suffered these problems, it is important to identify the causes and consequences of the exchange and banking crisis, before and after that it happened. Also, a review and contrast are performing to study the authorities' reactions at each of those moments. A simple method was followed based on three stages: First, was the search and review of chosen articles; then the study a numeric data gathering and reports to later lead at the final step: the execution of an analytical approach, supported on indicators of the economic behavior. In the end, a series of conclusions are listed that can help to rethink the strength and weaknesses sights that governments in North and South America - Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela - might wish to have, each time that designing economic politics. Keywords: Exchange Crisis, Foreign exchange reserves, Trade shocks, Banking shocks, Macroeconomic policies, Latin America, OECD.
Off-line Insulation Testing for DFIG Rotor Winding for Wind Energy Applications
SALCEDO BOLANOS ADRIAN JOSE
In recent times, there has been a significant rise in the use of inverter-operated electrical machines, especially doubly-fed inverter generators for wind energy applications However, studies have shown that rotor insulation deterioration is one of the major caus of failure and downtime in wind power generation. Hence, this paper introduces a nove approach for monitoring the condition of rotor-ground insulation for doubly-fed inverte machines. Moreover, due to the limited accessibility of these kind of power plants, i highly desirable to implement a remote and automated insulation testing. The propose method utilizes commonly used sensors usually employed for differential protectio and is simple in its application. It can be implemented before/after the motor is started/stopped and can screen out severe insulation deterioration preventing machine failure The method has been verified experimentally on a 440 V, 5.5 kW induction machine

This dissertation is composed of three chapters. The first two study topics related to higher education. Chapter one analyzes the relative advantages of different entry systems to university, and chapter two investigates the effects on academic outcomes of attending a higher quality campus at the college level. The third chapter examines household size choice. In the first chapter, "Entry Systems to University: Evidence on the Trade-offs of Early Selection versus Open Admission", I analyze the relative advantages between the two main entry systems to university in the world. In one, only those students who attended specific high schools are eligible to apply to college (early selection). In the second, all high school graduates can apply (open admission). I use the case of UNAM, a large public university in Mexico, where the two systems exist simultaneously to study the advantages of each of the two channels. UNAM runs a system of high schools (early selection), but it also admits students from other schools (open admission). I estimate whether attending a UNAM high school increases the probability of being a successful student in university. I identify this causal effect using a student strike that displaced students from one channel into the other. Results indicate that attending a UNAM high school reduces the probability of dropping out between the first and second year of college from 9 to 7 percent. Additionally, I show that some students from non-UNAM high schools have higher expected graduation probabilities than some students from UNAM high schools. Thus, the University benefits from admitting students who were not tracked into their schools. Finally, I use an analytical framework to test whether UNAM is selecting students from the two channels in a way that maximizes expected graduation rates. Results suggest that selection is optimal, given the particular constraints of the admissions process. The second chapter, "The Effect of College Quality on Academic Performance. Evidence from Mexico", is a joint project with Rodrigo Barros. We estimate the effects of attending a higher quality campus at the college level on academic outcomes using the case of UNAM. Incoming students from high schools run by the University are allocated to majors and campuses in UNAM using a mechanism that is based on a score. The score depends on the student's academic performance in high school, and the mechanism gives priority to students with higher scores. The allocation process generates a series of discontinuities where students with similar transition scores are assigned to different campuses due to capacity constraints. This allows us to use a regression discontinuity methodology. We find that attending the main campus rather than a secondary one significantly improves peer characteristics. That is, classmates of students in the main campus come from a better socioeconomic environment and have a better academic background. However, attending a higher quality campus does not significantly affect graduation probabilities or GPA, it increases the number of failed and dropped courses, and deteriorates the ranking by GPA of a student in her class. A possible interpretation is that other variables, like the student's ranking in the class, counteract the positive peer characteristics. Finally, the third chapter, "Families as Roommates: Changes in U.S. Household Size", is a joint project with Todd Schoellman and Michele Tertilt. This study is motivated by the empirical fact that the average American today lives in a household of three people, compared to six in 1850. We propose a mechanism based on the demand for privacy as an explanation for part of this reduction in household size. We hypothesize that as people get richer, they consume a lower proportion of public goods, which can be shared among all household members, relative to private goods, which cannot be shared. This reduces the economies of scale of living with other people, and endogenously decreases the optimal household size. We present a model that formalizes this idea and calibrate it to fit facts about the relationship between household size, consumption patterns, and income in a cross-section at the end of the 20th Century. We project the model back to 1850 by modifying income to its actual level at that point it time. The results indicate that our proposed mechanism can account for 37% of the difference in the number of adults in the household between 1850 and 2000, and for 16% of the decline in children.

This dissertation encompasses three chapters that are centered around the relationship between different transformative public policies and their - often unintended - impact on healthcare and socioeconomic conditions, both in the U.S. and internationally. All three articles use detailed administrative and restricted-use data and employ rigorous identification strategies to answer the questions of interest. The major interventions analyzed cover in-kind transfers in the form of land restitution, school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, and access to healthcare when insurance companies are terminated.Chapter 1 explores the direct and indirect effects of the land restitution policy in Colombia on mental health conditions and wellbeing. The indirect effects (spillovers) on depression, anxiety and substance abuse are estimated at the municipality level exploiting the comprehensive intervention from the government that protects the land of victims who have been displaced and dispossessed by illegal armed groups in a difference-in-differences strategy. I show that the restoration of property rights is associated with a reduction in overall mental health conditions. A decrease in conflict, more productive investment, and coverage of the health system suggest that the interventions to secure property rights boost the trust and expectations of citizens during times of war. The direct effects take advantage of the legal sentences that restitution judges issue and restore property rights at the individual/household level. Using administrative data, I examine how relying on welfare, poverty and healthcare change for beneficiaries who have enjoyed their returned property the longest.Chapter 2, joint with Sumedha Gupta and Kosali Simon, looks at how parental mental health in the US was disrupted once schools closed during the early and later phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a large medical claims dataset that covers around 20% of the commercially insured population nationwide, leveraging variation from cohorts of parents more and less exposed to the pandemic and computing the relative change in mobility to schools (elementary, middle and high) at the zip code level, we find an increase in maternal and paternal antidepressant use in zip codes with above median school closures. The positive effect on the demand for anti-depressant prescriptions is persistent over time after Fall 2020, even as in-person schooling resumed in 2021. We do not see changes in the demand for therapy, worsened conditions for mothers with previous antidepressant use or effects on mothers of middle/high school-aged children, but we do find positive effects from elementary school closures, which is a sign of how women during this economic downturn bore a disproportionate burden with increased housework and care hours, especially when it came to young children. Overall, the results suggest that the school system plays an important role in maintaining population mental well-being and in helping families cope with stress.Chapter 3 investigates the association between the termination of the largest health insurance company in Colombia, SaludCoop, and access to mental health services. After years of investigations and poor management, the government decided to terminate SaludCoop due to the mishandling of health resources by its board of directors. The government decided then to transfer the nearly 5 million SaludCoop beneficiaries (10% of the national covered population) to a smaller insurer called Cafesalud, which by that time had less than 5% of the market. I use several administrative data sources that record every contact that citizens have with the healthcare system, in addition to vital statistics, and leverage variation from the temporal and geographical presence of the insurer in a difference-in-differences empirical strategy. I find a decrease in the overall utilization of mental health services and consultations once SaludCoop exits the insurer market, at the same time that mortality linked to alcohol increases. I find these effects are persistent over time and are likely explained by an increase in the congestion of the health system, as the remaining insurers experienced greater demand from beneficiaries.

Groundwater currently provides 30 percent of freshwater in the world, and it is estimated that it potentially constitutes approximately 89 percent of the world's fresh water. Nevertheless, extensive extraction of groundwater in some areas is leading to aquifer depletion. Groundwater is considered, in some situations, a common-pool resource (CPR) with extremely high use value. Economists and political scientists have devoted a great amount of effort to understand how common pool resources are managed, as well as the characteristics of institutions that emerge in order to deal with the use and distribution of CPR. The characteristics of a CPR and how agents interact in their use are important for the success and sustainability of CPR-dependent communities. This dissertation will analyze the behavior and decision rules of CPR users in an experimental context. We discuss the results from laboratory and field experiments framed as a dynamic groundwater game in which users pump water from a shared resource, and the actions of users in one period affect resource availability and extraction costs of everyone in the next period. This is an innovative design, since most of previous studies do not consider the groundwater problem in experimental settings, and do not conduct a groundwater experiment with actual groundwater users. The objectives of this research are twofold. In the first part of the dissertation, I assess the presence of strategic behavior when participants have access to an efficient technology that yields both private and public benefits to CPR users. This situation might discourage users from adopting the new technology, which results in free-riding. In this part of the dissertation, I am also concerned about the effectiveness of group arrangements to improve water usage and to guarantee appropriation levels that yield a socially-desirable economic outcome. Given the experimental design, I can partially address both learning effects during the game and unobserved heterogeneity of participants, in order to obtain a precise estimation of the impact of the treatments. Finally, I also analyze the factors that affect technology adoption and deviation from agreed water usage. In the second part of the dissertation, I address the degree of heterogeneity in actions of participants, and aim to identify different types of behavior among participants in the use of the shared resource . Using a methodology proposed by Geweke and Keane (2000) and Houser et al. (2004), I can relax the rational expectations assumption in the dynamic choice problem, and identify different behaviors in the population. Based on the decisions that participants make during the experiment, I can identify and cluster parameters that define the future function of the dynamic choice problem in different "types" or groups of participants, with these groups endogenously created. I propose a flexible mixed multinomial discrete choice model that allows parameters to be drawn from a discrete mixture of distributions. In order to estimate the parameters and group membership probabilities, Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques are used. These methods allow the estimation of highly dimensional discrete choice problems and adds flexibility to estimation and the clustering process.
