Effects of Combining Feed Grade Urea and a Slow-release Urea Product on Characteristics of Digestion, Microbial Protein Synthesis and Digestible Energy in Steers Fed Diets with Different Starch:ADF Ratios

        Lopez-Soto, M.A.,Rivera-Mendez, C.R.,Aguilar-Hernandez, J.A.,Barreras, A.,Calderon-Cortes, J.F.,Plascencia, A.,Davila-Ramos, H.,Estrada-Angulo, A.,Valdes-Garcia, Y.S. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2014 Animal Bioscience Vol.27 No.2

As a result of the cost of grains, the replacement of grains by co-products (i.e. DDGS) in feedlot diets is a common practice. This change produces diets that contain a lower amount of starch and greater amount of fibre. Hypothetically, combining feed grade urea (U) with slow release urea (Optigen) in this type of diet should elicit a better synchrony between starch (high-rate of digestion) and fibre (low-rate of digestion) promoting a better microbial protein synthesis and ruminal digestion with increasing the digestible energy of the diet. Four cannulated Holstein steers ($213{\pm}4$ kg) were used in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to examine the combination of Optigen and U in a finishing diet containing different starch:acid detergent fibre ratios (S:F) on the characteristics of digestive function. Three S:F ratios (3.0, 4.5, and 6.0) were tested using a combination of U (0.80%) and Optigen (1.0%). Additionally, a treatment of 4.5 S:F ratio with urea (0.80% in ration) as the sole source of non-protein nitrogen was used to compare the effect of urea combination at same S:F ratio. The S:F ratio of the diet was manipulated by replacing the corn grain by dried distillers grain with solubles and roughage. Urea combination did not affect ruminal pH. The S:F ratio did not affect ruminal pH at 0 and 2 h post-feeding but, at 4 and 6 h, the ruminal pH decreased as the S:F ratio increased (linear, p<0.05). Ruminal digestion of OM, starch and feed N were not affected by urea combination or S:F ratio. The urea combination did not affect ADF ruminal digestion. ADF ruminal digestion decreased linearly (p = 0.02) as the S:F ratio increased. Compared to the urea treatment (p<0.05) and within the urea combination treatment (quadratic, p<0.01), the flow of microbial nitrogen (MN) to the small intestine and ruminal microbial efficiency were greater for the urea combination at a S:F ratio of 4.5. Irrespective of the S:F ratio, the urea combination improved (2.8%, p = 0.02) postruminal N digestion. As S:F ratio increased, OM digestion increased, but ADF total tract digestion decreased. The combination of urea at 4.5 S:F improved (2%, p = 0.04) the digestible energy (DE) more than expected. Combining urea and Optigen resulted in positive effects on the MN flow and DE of the diet, but apparently these advantages are observed only when there is a certain proportion of starch:ADF in the diet.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Inclusive ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) production have been measured in Pb–Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair s NN = 5.02 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The ϒ mesons are reconstructed in the centre-of-mass rapidity interval 2.5 < y < 4 and in the transverse-momentum range p T < 15 GeV/<I>c</I>, via their decays to muon pairs. In this Letter, we present results on the inclusive ϒ(1S) nuclear modification factor R AA as a function of collision centrality, transverse momentum and rapidity. The ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) R AA , integrated over the centrality range 0–90%, are 0.37 ± 0.02 ( stat ) ± 0.03 ( syst ) and 0.10 ± 0.04 ( stat ) ± 0.02 ( syst ) , respectively, leading to a ratio R AA ϒ ( 2S ) / R AA ϒ ( 1S ) of 0.28 ± 0.12 (stat) ± 0.06 (syst) . The observed ϒ(1S) suppression increases with the centrality of the collision and no significant variation is observed as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity.</P>

Interaction of silver(I) and copper(I) with an O2S2-macrocycle - A comparative structural study

        Kim, S.,Lee, E.,Lee, S.Y.,Lee, S.S.,Lindoy, L.F. Elsevier Sequoia [etc.] 2014 Inorganica chimica acta Vol.417 No.-

The 14-membered O2S2-macrocycle L reacts with AgPF6 in acetonitrile/dichloromethane (1:1) to yield the cyclic, double S-Ag-S bridged complex, [Ag2L2(CH3CN)4](PF6)2 (2), in which each Ag(I) is bound to two exo-oriented S donors arising from different macrocycles to form a 12-membered, di-Ag metallacycle. Two PF6- ions form weak intramolecular contacts [Ag...F, 2.925(2)A] between the Ag centres in a bridging bidentate fashion. The coordination sphere of each Ag is completed by two weakly bound acetonitrile molecules. The respective macrocyclic ligands are arranged trans to the mean plane through the metallacycle. When the above synthetic procedure was repeated employing methanol/dichloromethane (1:1) as solvent, a complex of type [Ag2L2](PF6)2 (3) was obtained whose structure incorporates a similar 12-membered metallacycle but with the respective macrocyclic rings now oriented towards the same side of the metallacyclic plane. The reaction of L with AgCF3SO3 yields [Ag2L2(CF3SO3)2].2CH3CN (4) whose structure resembles that of [Ag2L2(CH3CN)4](PF6)2 (2); each complex unit incorporates a di-Ag(I) 12-membered metallacycle, with symmetrical bridging bidentate CF3SO3- ions weakly linking Ag centres. Long Ag1...Ag1C contacts are present between pairs of complex units. Reaction of Cu(CH3CN)4PF6 (one equiv.) with L in methanol/dichloromethane (1:1) resulted in isolation of [CuL2]PF6 (5) incorporating a distorted tetrahedral S4-coordination sphere, with each macrocycle binding as a bidentate ligand via its two (exo-orientated) S atoms. In contrast, reaction of [Cu(CH3CN)4]PF6 (two equiv.) with L in either acetonitrile/dichloromethane (1:1) or methanol/dichloromethane (1:1) yielded [Cu2L3]PF6 (6) in which the Cu(I) centres are bound exo to the macrocyclic cavity by individual S-donors from one L, with the coordination sphere of each Cu(I) completed by out-of-plane binding of the S2O donors from a second L. Unsymmetrical F...Cu contacts from a PF6- anion weakly link the pair of Cu centres in a bridging bidentate fashion.

Selection for Duration of Fertility and Mule Duck White Plumage Colour in a Synthetic Strain of Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos)

        H.C. Liu,J.F. Huang,S.R. Lee,H.L. Liu,C.H. Hsieh,C.W. Huang,M.C. Huang,C. Tai,J.P. Poivey,R. Rouvier,Y.S. Cheng 아세아·태평양축산학회 2015 Animal Bioscience Vol.28 No.5

A synthetic strain of ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) was developed by introducing genes for long duration of fertility to be used as mother of mule ducklings and a seven-generation selection experiment was conducted to increase the number of fertile eggs after a single artificial insemination (AI) with pooled Muscovy semen. Reciprocal crossbreeding between Brown Tsaiya LRI-2 (with long duration of fertility) and Pekin L-201 (with white plumage mule ducklings) ducks produced the G0. Then G1 were intercrossed to produce G2 and so on for the following generations. Each female duck was inseminated 3 times, at 26, 29, and 32 weeks of age. The eggs were collected for 14 days from day 2 after AI. Individual data regarding the number of incubated eggs (Ie), the number of fertile eggs at candling at day 7 of incubation (F), the total number of dead embryos (M), the maximum duration of fertility (Dm) and the number of hatched mule ducklings (H) with plumage colour were recorded. The selection criterion was the breeding values of the best linear unbiased prediction animal model for F. The results show high percentage of exhibited heterosis in G2 for traits to improve (19.1% for F and 12.9% for H); F with a value of 5.92 (vs 3.74 in the Pekin L-201) was improved in the G2. Heritabilities were found to be low for Ie (h2 = 0.07±0.03) and M (h2 = 0.07±0.01), moderately low for Dm (h2 = 0.13±0.02), of medium values for H (h2 = 0.20±0.03) and F (h2 = 0.23±0.03). High and favourable genetic correlations existed between F and Dm (rg = 0.93), between F and H (rg = 0.97) and between Dm and H (rg = 0.90). The selection experiment showed a positive trend for phenotypic values of F (6.38 fertile eggs in G10 of synthetic strain vs 5.59 eggs in G4, and 3.74 eggs in Pekin L-201), with correlated response for increasing H (5.73 ducklings in G10 vs 4.86 in G4, and 3.09 ducklings in Pekin L-201) and maximum duration of the fertile period without increasing the embryo mortality rate. The average predicted genetic response for F was 40% of genetic standard deviation per generation of selection. The mule ducklings’ feather colour also was improved. It was concluded that this study provided results for a better understanding of the genetics of the duration of fertility traits in the common female duck bred for mule and that the selection of a synthetic strain was effective method of improvement.

RETRIEVAL OF LOCAL INTERPLANETARY DUST EMISSIVITY BY ASTRO-F

        HONG S. S.,KWON S. M.,PYO J.,UENO M.,ISHIGURO M.,USUI F.,WEINBERG J. L. The Korean Astronomical Society 2004 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.37 No.4

This is a proposal to probe local part of the interplanetary dust (IPD) cloud complex and retrieve mean volume emissivity of the local IPDs at mid-infrared wavelengths. This will be done by monitoring, with Infrared Camera (IRC) aboard the ASTRO-F, the annual modulation of the zodiacal emission. In pointing mode of the ASTRO-F mission the spacecraft can make attitude maneuvering over approximately ${\pm}1^{\circ}$ range centered at solar elongation $90^{\circ}$ in the ecliptic plane. The attitude maneuvering combined with high sensitivity of the IRC will provide us with a unique opportunity observationally to take derivatives of the zodiacal emission brightness with respect to the solar elongation. From the resulting differential of the brightness over the ${\pm}1^{\circ}$ range, one can directly determine the mean volume emissivity of the local IPDs with a sufficient accuracy to de-modulate the annual emissivity variations due to the Earth's elliptical motion and the dis-alignment of the maximum IPD density plane with respect to the ecliptic. The non-zero eccentricity ($e_{\oplus}$= 0.0167) of the Earth's orbit combined with the sensitive temperature dependence of the Planck function would bring modulations of amplitude at least $3.34\%$ to the zodiacal emission brightness at mid-infrared wavelengths, with which one may determine the IPD temperature T(r) and mean number density n(r) as functions of heliocentric distance r. This will in turn fix the power-law exponent $\delta$ in the relation $T(r) = T_o(r/r_o)^{-\delta}$ for the dust temperature and v in $n(r) = n_o(r/r_o)^-v$ for the density. We discuss how one may de-couple the notorious degeneracy of cross-section, density, reference temperature $T_o$ and exponent $\delta$.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Transverse momentum ( p T ) spectra of charged particles at mid-pseudorapidity in Xe–Xe collisions at s NN = 5.44 TeV measured with the ALICE apparatus at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The kinematic range 0.15 < p T < 50 GeV / c and | η | < 0.8 is covered. Results are presented in nine classes of collision centrality in the 0–80% range. For comparison, a pp reference at the collision energy of s = 5.44 TeV is obtained by interpolating between existing pp measurements at s = 5.02 and 7 TeV. The nuclear modification factors in central Xe–Xe collisions and Pb–Pb collisions at a similar center-of-mass energy of s NN = 5.02 TeV, and in addition at 2.76 TeV, at analogous ranges of charged particle multiplicity density ⟨ d N ch / d η ⟩ show a remarkable similarity at p T > 10 GeV / c . The centrality dependence of the ratio of the average transverse momentum ⟨ p T ⟩ in Xe–Xe collisions over Pb–Pb collision at s = 5.02 TeV is compared to hydrodynamical model calculations.</P>

Fang, F.F.,Cho, M.S.,Choi, H.J.,Yoon, S.S.,Ahn, W.S. Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemi 2008 Journal of industrial and engineering chemistry Vol.14 No.1

Nanocomposite of mesoporous swollen MCM-41 (S-MCM-41) with conducting polypyrrole (PPY) (PPY/S-MCM-41) confined inside uniformly aligned one-dimensional channels of the S-MCM-41 was prepared, and its physical and electrorheological (ER) characteristics when dispersed in silicone oil were examined under an applied electric field. N2-adsorption isotherm and XRD analysis were employed to confirm successful insertion of the PPY chain into host channels of the S-MCM-41. ER responses of the nanocomposite based ER fluid were investigated using a rotational rheometer, showing typical ER characteristics of the increment of shear stress as a function of an applied electric field strength.

      • Differential regulation of Akt/protein kinase B isoforms during cell cycle progression

        Yun, S.J.,Tucker, D.F.,Kim, E.K.,Kim, M.S.,Do, K.H.,Ha, J.M.,Lee, S.Y.,Yun, J.,Kim, C.D.,Birnbaum, M.J.,Bae, S.S. North-Holland Pub ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2009 FEBS letters Vol.583 No.4

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathways play key regulatory roles in cell cycle progression into S phase. In this study, we demonstrated that Akt1/PKBα isoform plays an essential role in G1/S transition and proliferation. Cells lacking Akt1/PKBα showed an attenuated proliferation as well as G1/S transition, whereas cells lacking Akt2/PKBβ showed normal proliferation and G1/S transition. The effect of Akt1/PKBα on cell proliferation and G1/S transition was completely abolished by swapping pleckstrin homology (PH) domain with that of Akt2/PKBβ. Finally, full activation of Akt/PKB and cyclin D expression was achieved by the Akt1/PKBα or chimeric proteins containing the PH domain of Akt1/PKBα indicating that the PH domain of Akt1/PKBα provides full kinase activity and is necessary for the G1/S transition.

Hyaluronidase-inhibitory activities of glycosaminoglycans from Liparis tessellatus eggs

        Ticar, B.F.,Rohmah, Z.,Mussatto, S.I.,Lim, J.M.,Park, S.,Choi, B.D. Applied Science Publishers 2017 Carbohydrate polymers Vol.161 No.-

Polysaccharide fractions isolated from L. tessellatus eggs were purified and eluted using the DEAE-sepharose fast flow column. These were collected, tested and pooled based on their sugars content: F1, F2, and F3 which contain 26.8, 23.3, and 20.2% sulfated glycans; 34.5, 38.2, and 45.0% uronic acids; and 23.5, 19.0, and 7.5% acetylhexosamines and hexosamines, respectively. Hyaluronidase inhibitory effects of the fractions are in the order F3>F2>F1>Ascorbic acid, with F3 having the highest inhibition among the fractions and that of the standard, ascorbic acid. The electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) confirmed the presence of uronic acids on F3, which could be a 0,2A2 fragment plus loss of methyl group which is very common among non-methylated, sulfated disaccharides.
